LIFESTYLE LETTER

February — Love Local

February 2023 PUBLISHER

Julie LaCroix | julie.lacroix@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

I don’t know about you, but this time of year, I look for special ways to celebrate not just with a sweetheart but with all the special people in my life. Whether that’s a greeting card, a small gift, or dinner out on the town, I love to indulge in any sweet excuse to celebrate my loved ones. So what will you do on Valentine’s Day? Will it be a date out somewhere special, or will you enjoy a cozy night at home? Each of us has our own traditions and expectations, and we arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities. But what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope this month’s magazine pages will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our local community. February brings cold snaps to many regions of the country, but always warmth to our hearts. I remember my first February of living in New York City early in my career. It snowed so much that they closed the stock market and the entire transportation system for a day. That was unheard of! I remember the excitement of living in my first major East Coast snowstorm—the first of many which filled the following days with crisp sunshine, snowball fights and snowmen in Central Park. Peoria is a far cry from New York, but it brings us sunshine and awe for its beauty. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home, in your neighborhood and across your community. “Love local” means your local businesses— those in your community—but it also means loving what is near. So grab a coffee at NW Coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Snag a bottle of wine from Turquoise Wine Bar and a tray of sushi from Kawaii, and indulge in a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. We hope we inspire you to love it more than you did before.

ONE QUESTION

What is your favorite West Valley date night? ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

We asked members of our community to answer this question. Here’s what they had to say.

FLORINDA WILSON

CEO & Founder, Sparkle Momm Media & Marketing @sparklemomm.blog

My husband, Michael, and I have the most fun in the West Valley, always trying new things. Three of our fun date night spots in the West Valley are Cantina Gueros (CantinaGueros.com), with two West Valley locations; Carousel Arcade Bar (CarouselArcadeBar.com), where adulthood meets childhood in Westgate Entertainment District; and Lake Pleasant Cruises (LakePleasantCruises.com) with sunset, music and dinner.

REBECCA TAIG

Owner, RebeccaTaig.com, Gluten-Free Recipes & Entertaining @rebecca.taig

My favorite date night with my husband Kenny is dining at Bottega Ristorante (BottegaRistorante.com), a local Italian restaurant in Glendale. Simple yet elegant, their delicious food, ambiance, and hospitality create the perfect dining experience. Their gluten-free pizza crust is the best crust I’ve ever had! Although they are not a gluten-free restaurant, I always feel accommodated with many options on their menu. Every time we’ve dined with the Bottega, I’ve noticed the owner walking around, checking in on his guests and ensuring everyone has a good experience.

My favorite date night with my husband, Bill, starts with pre-dinner drinks (bubbly for me) at Turquoise Wine Bar (TurquoiseWineBar.com). After a drink, we walk over to Arrowhead Grill (ArrowheadGrill.com) for a steak dinner. We both love the Delmonico Steak with Lyonnaise Potatoes. An evening of great food and wine is sometimes just what we need to relax and regroup and we’re lucky that both are right here in our part of the Valley.

WEST VALLEY FARMERS MARKETS ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRYAN PAHIA

Local businesses and artisans put their love, sweat and tears into their work. You can catch them showcasing their goods and services at area farmer’s markets. Not sure which markets to check out or even where to find them? We’ve got you covered. Here are options for sourcing the best local ingredients and craft items in the West Valley.

ARROWHEAD FARMERS MARKET While many markets close during the summer, the Arrowhead Farmers Market (GetLocalArizonaEvents.com/ saturdaymarket) is held year-round every Saturday at the Arrowhead Mall parking lot, upper level near the Dillards entrance. Each Saturday features a wide variety of food vendors, including fresh produce providers TJ Farms and Moreno Farms along with Salsa Patron, Aravaipa Canyon Ranch, Baked and Boujee Cookies and Proof Bread. Non-food vendors—selling anything from clothing to crafts to home goods—include Bubbles by MJ, The Standard Beard Company, and Crazee Mama’s Coasters. Arrowhead Farmers Market is open every Saturday. From October to April, the market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From May to September, the market hours are 8 to 11 a.m.

PARK WEST FARMERS MARKET Located at Park West Shopping Center near Northern and 97th Avenue, the Park West Farmers Market (TheParkWestMarket.com) supports local businesses with an average of more than 100 vendors on-site weekly. You can also visit local food trucks and hear live music. Regular vendors at the market include Bully Brew Coffee, Stash Bakery, AZ Hawaiian Shrimp, Noble Bread, Rustic Wine Barrel, and more. The market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. October through April. The market will be closed in the summer months.

VISTANCIA FARMERS MARKET The Vistancia Farmers Market (Facebook.com/ Vist anciafarmers market) is open to the public at the Mountain Vista Club at 29701 N. Sunrise Point in North Peoria. Check out the wide variety of vendors on site on the 3rd Sunday of each month. With more than 80 vendors on site, you will likely find everything you could possibly want. Each month, three farmers bring in local produce and goods. Along with produce, you’ll find pastries and artisan breads, jams and award-winning salsa and sauces, Alaskan fish and meats, local raw honey, arts and crafts and more. Also on hand are food trucks, live music, and activities for the kids. The market runs from September to June and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CAMPBELL’S RESTAURANT FARMERS MARKET Campbell’s Restaurant Farmers Market (Facebook.com/Campbellspeoria) is open year-round just across the street from Campbell’s Restaurant, located at 91st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road in Peoria. The market started about six years ago with a handful of vendors. It has grown to nearly 100 local vendors showcasing their love of artisan products and services. Vendors sell woodworking, jams, jellies, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, jerky, eggs, arts and crafts, and more. Some of the vendors you may find on-site during your visit are Gia’s Raw Juice, Top This Cupcakes, A Hen and Her Chicks and GC Creative Works. Campbell’s Restaurant Farmers Market is open the first and third Saturday of each month. From September through May, it is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market shifts hours to the cooler evening hours of 7 to 10 p.m. in the summer.

SPORTSMAN’S PARK MARKET Sportsman’s Park Market (Sportsmans ParkMarket.com) is one of the newer West Valley markets, popping up in November 2022 just outside the State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The Sportsman’s Park Market is held on the Great Lawn of Sportsman’s Park next to the stadium. It is comprised of more than 100 local vendors who are there to showcase their love for all things local. And if the vendors weren’t enough to bring you out to the market for fun and shopping, there is also a mimosa and Bloody Mary bar open to the public at each market, along with live local entertainment and plenty of activities for the kids. On-site vendors include Rochelle Made It, jewelry by Simply Kai, handcrafted Spicy Chamoy candy by Spicy Sassy Dulces, handmade designs by 1st Page Crafting, and more. CONTINUED >

CONDITION OF THE MONTH

HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE • Traditional Medical Approach: Statin drugs block your body’s ability to produce cholesterol naturally. High blood pressure drugs can: cause your body to get rid of water, block nerve activity on blood vessels, and make your heart beat with less force.

• Prescription Drug Side Effects: Statin drugs increase urination, erectile dysfunction, depression, and memory loss. High blood pressure drugs cause headaches, drowsiness, mental confusion, and type 2 diabetes.

• Chiropractic Approach: Address health issues within your daily/ weekly routine (wellness care). Focus on early intervention instead of crisis care management. *Once statins and high blood pressure medications are required, they are usually taken for life and memory loss becomes dramatic.

Mitchell Chiropractic specializes in holistic all-natural wellness care for you and your family.

Local Love for Valley Artisans MEET 3 LOCAL MAKERS

ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

Looking for ways to show gratitude for some local businesses during this season of love? One of the best ways to support local entrepreneurs and keep those hard-earned dollars here in our community is to seek out local artisans who live and work right here in the West Valley. Wondering where to find great artisans? Several spots around town showcase local makers, including West Valley farmers markets (see the article on page 12 for some of our favorites). We also recommend you check out specialty stores, including 85 Local (85LocalAZ.com), which we highlighted on page 32 in the October 2022 issue. 85 Local showcases more than 25 local artisans. You can find pastries, fresh bread to order, freeze-dried candy and local honey along with home décor items, jewelry and clothing. There are also classes if you yearn to join the ranks of local artisans. Another great place to find artisan items is The Grand Project Shoppe (TheGrandProjectShoppe. com) at Park West. Dozens of vendors offer home décor, clothing, jewelry, one-of-kind furniture pieces, inspirational art on canvas, crocheted items, books, herbal products, vintage items, paper crafts, clothing and more. We wandered through the farmer’s markets and scoured the artisan markets to share a few of our favorite items from three local artisans. Do you have favorites? We’d love to hear about them so we can feature them in a future issue of North Peoria Lifestyle. Drop us an email or tag us @NorthPeoriaLifestyle on Instagram. Enjoy the beautiful items you discover and feel great about supporting local businesses.

CHOCOLATE and WINE February brings celebrations of love which frequently include the timeless treasure of wine and chocolate. Whether it’s over romantic dinners for two or between female friends at “Galentine’s” parties, wine and chocolate will be making lots of appearances this month. Use this as your guide to creating an exquisite experience for your loved ones this month. These aphrodisiacs have a lot of similarities to each other. For one, they both contain flavanols (antioxidants) and polyphenols (compounds found in plant-based food) that are good for you and have anti-inflammatory properties. But because these characteristics affect flavor, it’s somewhat challenging to pair wine and chocolate together. The more polyphenols, the more pronounced the bitter taste. For example, if you sip a delicious dry red wine alongside a hunk of dark chocolate, the wine will start to taste bitter and sour. The taste imbalance is coming from the heightened levels of flavanols (different types of tannin) found in both chocolate and wine that end up clashing against each other on your tongue. While it might sound counterintuitive, a good rule of thumb is to pair a wine that is “sweeter” than the chocolate itself. “Sweet” doesn’t refer to dessert wines alone. In the wine world, the term “sweet” is often used to denote ripe, fruit-forward flavors in a wine. These characteristics provide a nice balance to the bitter flavors of cocoa. Both wine and chocolate can have intense, dry flavors. In order to find the right balance, it’s best to choose wines that are a little bit softer and juicier than the chocolate you’re pairing it with. Fortunately, we’ve done the footwork to find several wines that partner well with chocolate. Here are our guidelines for matching chocolate with wine and a few of our favorite wine and chocolate pairings. We hope you’ll try them and then get inspired to experiment and create your own.

T I P 1 : M AT C H S U G A R WITH SUGAR What’s true of relationships is not true of wine and chocolate: opposites do not attract. When it comes to pairing chocolate and wine, you don’t want to strike a balance, you want to match sugar to sugar. Sweeter chocolate like white chocolate does better when consumed with sweeter wines and bitter chocolate like dark chocolate enjoys being paired with dryer wines. Think of it as matching sugar with sugar. Sweet white chocolate pairs well with sweet wines high in residual sugars and bitter darks with dry wines with just a hint of residual sugar. A good rule of thumb is to always pair wines that are equally or slightly more sweet than the chocolate being eaten with it.

T I P 2 : M AT C H I N T E N S I T Y WITH INTENSITY If you pair an incredibly delicately flavored dark chocolate with a full-bodied, heavy red, the intensity of the wine will destroy any of the subtlety that might have been present in the chocolate. The opposite is also true: strong-tasting chocolate will blow a delicate wine out of the water. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: light-flavored chocolates enjoy being paired with light-bodied wines and intensely flavored chocolates prefer being paired with full-bodied wines.

TI P 3: PAI R FL AVORS WITH FL AVORS Wine and chocolate both carry their own intense flavors. If your chocolate contains other ingredients such as nuts, fruit, or caramel, consider how these flavors will play with the wine. This is especially helpful to remember when enjoying truffles with wine. To avoid creating a palate power play between the two, do your best to match fruity or floral chocolates with fruity wines like Moscato or White Zinfandel. Enjoy chocolate-covered nuts alongside a nutty wine like a Madeira or Marsala. Chocolate studded with dried cranberries might pair well with a fruit-forward red with berry undertones.

24

a note

ON SERVING WINE AND C H O C O L AT E F L I G H T S : Just as you would with any other tasting, it’s best to start with light chocolates and wines, increasing the intensity as you go along. Start with white chocolates and light wines and save the richest, dark chocolates and wines for last. By doing this, you will keep your palate from starting out too strong and missing out on the subtle sensations found in more delicate chocolate and wine selections.

SHOP LOCAL

THE BEST LOCAL SOURCES FOR ALL YOUR WINE AND CHOCOLATE NEEDS Whether you’re celebrating with a Valentine or hanging out with your gal pals, you will want to pick up some chocolates and great wine. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and think outside the box. Here are a few of our suggestions.

Tu r q u o i s e W i n e C e l l a r & Ta s t i n g R o o m

This is a boutique bottle shop where you can find some unique varietals from Arizona and afar. You can stop by and do a tasting with one of several available flights to sample the wine before you take it home. 8160 W Union Hills Dr, Ste B200, Glendale | 480.859.2788 TurquoiseWineBar.com

Edible Arrangements

Edible creates exactly what its name implies—edible arrangements. Most people who know about the shop think of fruit arrangements but stop by the Peoria shop to check out the great chocolate offerings. From chocolate-dipped strawberries to cheesecakes topped with chocolate-dipped fruits, you’ll find something to please that special someone. 8877 N 107th Ave #307, Peoria | 623.972.0100 EdibleArrangements.com

Cerreta Candy Company

You’re missing out if you’ve never sampled the candies from this hometown candy factory in downtown Glendale. Cerreta, a family-owned and operated business, started more than 50 years ago. Today, the fourth generation is making and selling candy. There are many chocolate options but do pick up some of Cerreta’s signature French Mint Truffles. They also offer tours of the factory. 5345 W Glendale Ave, Glendale | 623.930.9000 Cerreta.com

AJ’s Fine Foods

Arizona’s favorite grocer, Eddie Basha, developed the fine foods gourmet grocery store in 1985. While you can pick up various grocery items, this is a favorite spot to shop for wine and chocolate. Stop by the Boulangerie for every imaginable chocolate treat then head to the wine cellar for a great selection of domestic and imported wines. The selection of champagnes and sparkling wines is impressive. And don’t forget the cheese at the Fromagerie. We recommend the French Triple Cream Brie. 20050 N 67th Ave, Glendale | 623.537.2300 AJsFineFoods.com CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/N O RT HP E O R I A

Bitter to semi-sweet dark chocolates, that are 50 to 100% cacao, have intense, bitter flavors, and earthy to fruity undertones. Match the intensity without adding more dryness by pairing these chocolates with full-bodied, yet fruit-forward wines.

Milk chocolate is typically creamier and sweeter with flavors of brown sugar, vanilla, and cream. It requires a wine that is light to medium in body, with a ripe fruit character.

White chocolate, which is made with sugar, milk and cocoa butter has a sweet, buttery flavor with notes of cream and honey. Sweet white and rosè wines help cleanse the palate of the rich flavors from white chocolate, as does sparkling spumante like Moscato d’Asti.

Pairs well with: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Port, Merlot, Shiraz, Barolo

Pairs well with: Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sweet Riesling, Ice-Style Wine

Pairs well with: Sweet Riesling, Moscato, Semi-Dry Sparkling Whites, Gewurztraminer

THE PERFECT FIT WHY BUY LOCAL

ARTICLE BY REBECCA PISANI

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE ANDERT

FOR 10 YEARS, TORTOISE & HARE SPORTS HAS BEEN FOSTERING COMMUNITY THROUGH RUNNING Small, independent running stores have always played an important role in the sport. But more than just part of the athletic community, they’re the heart and soul of their surrounding neighborhoods. Not only do they champion runners, but they also assist local medical professionals, support schools and coordinate races and training events. These were all important to Rebecca and Nathan Hohenstein when they opened Tortoise & Hare Sports (TortoiseandHareSports.com) more than 10 years ago in the Village Shops at Arrowhead. As the first locally owned running store in the West Valley, the bright, open space is dedicated to helping folks of all ages and abilities find the best shoe for their needs and bringing area residents together to share their passion for running.

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY “Our motto is to encourage, educate and celebrate a healthy lifestyle while embracing your pace,” Rebecca says. The Hohensteins and their team put their motto into action by following three core values: • service • teamwork • community

Shopping for sneakers at a dedicated running store can be scary for most people. “I can empathize with customers who come here to get fitted for shoes for the first time. It can be intimidating,” agrees Rebecca. That factor is why many people purchase shoes online or at large chain stores. “Sure, they can anonymously pick out any shoes they want,” she continues, “and they can get good footwear, but it probably won’t be the right footwear for them.”

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT At Tortoise & Hare, friendly, knowledgeable team members help customers of all ages and mobility levels find the perfect shoe. On any given day, the floor buzzes with college-age athletes looking for running shoes that will give them an edge on the track, families in search of sneakers that will take them from the sidewalk to the hiking trails, and elderly medical patients who are simply looking for something comfortable to ease their foot pain. “We work with so many different types of clients,” Rebecca says. Local podiatrists, physical therapists and chiropractors frequently refer patients to the store for personalized care, including a five-point fit process determining the correct shoe for each customer. “We want to make sure that every time someone comes in, they feel as though they’re getting the best service they’ve experienced anywhere,” Rebecca notes.

COMMUNITY RUNNING EVENTS In addition to supplying folks with the proper shoes and gear, Tortoise & Hare Sports sponsors various activities designed to get customers up and moving—and to bring community members together.

The store’s calendar of events is chock-full of activities. There are weekly Sunday Rundays, free yoga classes and Thursday morning walks/ runs around the Arrowhead Loop. You’ll also notice larger monthly events, including the Pizza & Pint Run on the last Thursday of each month, which ends with pizza and refreshments, and the Donut Run on second Saturdays, which finishes with donuts and coffee from a local bakery. “It’s powerful when customers tell us how we changed their lives by encouraging them to come to an event,” Rebecca says. “They flourish in a really positive way just through physical movement.”

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Giving back to the community that has supported them for the past decade is a priority for the Hohensteins. They frequently donate shoes to local nonprofits, including The Hope Effect, a Peoria-based charity that provides family-based solutions for orphan care; Social Spin Laundromat, which offers free laundry services, meals and supplies to families in need; St. Vincent de Paul; and area shelters. The store also puts on several annual fundraising runs, including the Ice Cream Run in May, Monster Mash & Dash in October, and Holiday Lights Run in December. popular events are used to buy shoes for students in Title 1 schools throughout Glendale and the West Valley. And in 2022, the store started Great Kicks Kids. Through this program, teachers and coaches receive gift cards they can give to students in need. The kids bring the cards to the store, are fitted for free shoes, and are given socks and insoles if necessary. With an emphasis on providing great shoes and working together to celebrate everyone in the West Valley, it’s no wonder the store was honored as one of the Top 50 Running Stores in America for 2022 by the organization that produces The Running Event trade show. “There are a lot of different ways that you can serve people,” Rebecca explains. “We get to do so not just by helping them get into good shoes but also by giving back. It’s good for the community, and it’s good for your heart. We love the area we live in, and we feel really honored and blessed that we have the ability to do all the things we do.”

SUPPORT LOCAL You can stop by Tortoise & Hare Sports, located on the outer loop at Arrowhead Towne Center at 17570 N 75th Ave #605 in Glendale, to check out the shoes and gear they have in stock.

Breakthrough!

S O M E F U N — AT T H I S UNIQUE SMASH ROOM EXPERIENCE

ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE ANDERT

I am a rule follower. I’ve spent my life trying to color in the lines, do what I’m told, and never break things. So, when Vincent Serpico invited me to Breakthrough Smash Room (BreakthroughSmashRoom.com), I wasn’t sure I could break anything. It turns out I could—and it was cathartic.

WHY A SMASH ROOM? Vincent and his wife Melissa were devastated a few years ago when their teenage daughter nearly died following a suicide attempt. Her doctor suggested they find an outlet for her frustrations. The family went to a smash room in the East Valley. “It helped. She laughed, and we had fun,” says Vincent, with the enthusiasm constantly emanating from him. “But the place wasn’t very friendly, and it felt dirty. We knew we could do it better.” Three years later, the Serpicos have a smashing success. Much of it is because they embrace hospitality and work hard to give everyone a great experience.

THE SMASH EXPERIENCE When you arrive at your allotted time, you stash your belongings in a locker and don coveralls, gloves and a face shield. Every guest gets to pick their basket of items to smash. For an additional fee, you can choose computers or electronics. Then for the next 30 to 45 minutes, you use various tools—bats, sledgehammers and pry bars—to break items. I enjoyed throwing items at the wall. You will also get a bottle filled with confetti. Breaking it and watching the glitter fly was satisfying.

34

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

SMASHING YOUR WAY Customize your Breakthrough experience to suit your needs. In addition to individual sessions, you can book group smashing for up to 40 people. Celebrating a birthday or anniversary? Get two hours of smashing plus cake, pizza, drinks and an attendant. Smashing is also popular for team-building exercises. The private events include an hour’s party and two hours of smashing, with the use of the entire location for the duration of the event. Breakthrough also has a splatter room, which I’m interested in returning to try. You receive a canvas, three paint colors, and a variety of paintbrushes. You have about 30 minutes to splatter.

BREAKING IS HEALING While smashing is great fun, it is also healing. The Serpicos work with various mental health agencies around the Valley. Therapists use smashing as a way to build confidence and empower people. And, there seems to be medical evidence that it really is cathartic. Vincent commented that people usually realize the truth behind the saying, “You don’t feel the weight of something you’ve been carrying until you feel the weight of its release.” He explained that some people come in with weighty issues they want to resolve. The staff will give them a black marker and have them write what they want to release on the item. I also found it therapeutic to say something I wanted to release out loud, then hit a bottle or throw something against the wall to represent the release. Breakthrough Smash Room has partnered with The Healing Effect, a licensed mental health therapy company operated by Clinical Supervisor and Director Stefanny Balestracci. They work with patients to give them a way to release. “We’ve seen people come in while working through difficult life events,” explains Vincent. “Whether it’s death, job loss, illness or relationship issues.”

“Smashing relieves stress and makes you feel empowered. You’re smashing preconceived notions of what you cannot do!” GIVING BACK Breakthrough Smash Room loves to make smashing available to those who can’t afford it. To help offset the costs, they are launching an NFT charity campaign. They will work with local Phoenix area artists; every dollar of revenue goes to help someone experience the therapeutic effects of smashing. You can find details on their website to purchase the NFT and help those who need it most.
