LIFESTYLE LETTER

January — Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of North Peoria Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to inspire lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your life. We wanted to think beyond the typical health and wellness issue. Yes, we have some great food ideas, some exercise tips and healthy body tips. But we also wanted to help you think about the overall health of your aging parents along with the health of your home, your yard and your business. When it comes to anything in life—business, finance, food, home and personal health—it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle. It’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve wanted to try at Haymaker. It’s not what you do some days—it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

NEW YEAR TIPS FOR MAINTAINING ONE OF LIFE’S BIGGEST INVESTMENTS—YOUR HOME ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE ANDERT— PICTURE LADY PHOTOGRAPHY LLC

Deep Clean Your Flooring David Rivera, the owner of Avocado Cleaning, LLC (AvocadoCleaning.com), says that routinely deep-cleaning flooring has numerous health benefits. In addition to maintaining cleanliness and softness in your carpets, regular professional floor cleaning can help improve your quality of life by eliminating allergens. Rivera recommends a deep cleaning at least once a year. Avocado Cleaning offers a multi-step process to remove allergens and kill bacteria in carpet, tile and upholstery. “The Valley has many airborne allergens and dander that get caught in flooring, which, when stirred up, causes deterioration of health in your home,” says Rivera. “Carpet is the largest filter in your house, and regular maintenance results in better air quality in your home.” Rivera says his company’s goal is to earn clients for a lifetime by being upfront and transparent from start to finish. “We take the time to answer questions and educate our clients to ensure 100 percent satisfaction upon completion of every job.”

Maintain Your HVAC

Peter Bartos

Owner, State 48 Home Services

“If the air you breathe inside your home is too hot, too cold, too dusty or too smelly, call us.”

State 48 Home Services (GreatState48.com) offers the latest in whole-house indoor air quality technology in addition to HVAC, insulation and ductwork restoration, renovation and replacement services. “Most people know that the outside air we breathe in Arizona can be dirty, if not unhealthy,” says State 48 owner Peter Bartos. “Few people realize that sometimes the air inside their homes can be just as bad. Incorporating better indoor air solutions can provide results that can be felt.” Regular annual service of an older system could help extend the useful life of something you’re not ready or able to replace. State 48 Home Services is also happy to provide routine professional maintenance of a new AC system. Bartos reminds us that most manufacturers require routine maintenance for warranty coverage. “There are high-quality hard-wired devices on the market that, when correctly installed to HVAC equipment, can ‘scrub’ the air in our homes,” explains Bartos. When you call the experts at State 48, they can install that whole-house technology for you, to help ensure a healthy home for your family. One of the differences you’ll discover with State 48 Home Services is that it is 100% local. Bartos and his family are North Peoria residents and he operates the business right here in the community. “Many of the notable AC companies in our Metro Phoenix market are now owned, and consequently directed, by gargantuan corporate entities from places including California, Connecticut and the Middle East. Our customers enjoy knowing that the dollars they spend with us remain at home.” Bartos explains that his entire team wants to know the homeowners they work with and live with here in the area. “Every technician on our team knows that we are in the people business.” Bartos encourages homeowners to schedule a no-copay “checkup” for their home’s HVAC system because there’s never a bad time of year to ensure healthy air.

Install Artificial Turf Arizona’s Greenest Grass Turf Co. (AZGreenestGrass.com) offers artificial turf made in the USA and certified free of lead and toxins. “Not all turf is created equally and, depending on what it is constructed of, may contain harmful materials,” explains owner Eric Noyes. In addition to being a low-maintenance alternative to natural grass, with no need for maintenance, artificial turf helps with water conservation. Due to the dry Arizona climate, growing natural grass can be difficult and uses a lot of water. Natural grass also needs fertilizer, often washed into waterways where the nutrients can cause rapid algae growth. “Too much algae depletes the oxygen in the water, creating dead zones where fish and other aquatic life cannot survive,” says Noyes. Having a more water-friendly landscape doesn’t have to be barren. Arizona’s Greenest Grass Turf Co. specializes in landscape design and installation of artificial turf, pavers, travertine, outdoor lighting, steps, planters, irrigation, trees, plants and more. The company creates private outdoor living spaces with healthy play areas for children and pets. “One does not need to have a desert or rock landscape to avoid water usage,” Noyes emphasizes when talking about their design services. Quality turf is a long-lasting investment. According to Noyes, Arizona’s Greenest Grass offers quality turf lasting 10 to 15 years and beyond.

Use Solar Energy August Heiss, owner of ADH Solar (ADHSolar.com), advocates for residential solar energy. “My focus is on energy efficiency and providing education regarding solar energy,” he says. According to Heiss, the more efficient your home or business is, the smaller footprint you leave behind. ADH Solar provides solar panel estimates, installation and maintenance, financing, and rebates for solar panels. “Solar energy is clean energy and can benefit the home’s health and save you money by becoming more energy independent.”

Troy Dinbokowitz Sunsolar Solutions

Decrease Energy Costs Troy Dinbokowitz of Sunsolar Solutions (SunsolarSolutions.com) agrees with the importance of solar, citing rising energy costs that double every 15 years. “With the outdated infrastructure and crazy inflation, the trend is exponentially accelerating,” he explains. “Everybody should be in control of their own energy costs for as long as they live in the home without suffering increases while they live there.” Sunsolar uses only the best products and installation practices. It is the only company in the industry that uses a three-course roof installation process. “I feel like I’m helping people live more comfortably by decreasing their energy costs,” says Dinbokowitz. “Solar is the future, and every year people wait to make the change, the cost goes up by an average of 10%.”

Photo by Christine Andert— Picture Lady Photography LLC

LOCAL EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON ACCOMPLISHING HEALTH GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Kelly Sullens Owner & Coach, AZ Fit Body AZFitBody.com HOW CAN YOU STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR NUTRITION GOALS? An excellent first step is to find a reliable meal-tracking app, such as My Fitness Pal, Lose It or Fitbit. Set up your profile with current statistics such as height, weight and activity level. This will help the app to provide you with your “Total Daily Energy Expenditure,” or TDEE, and your daily calorie goal. Also, plan your week’s meals. You’ll reach for something unhealthy if you don’t have anything healthy on hand. Failure to plan is planning to fail!

WHAT ARE COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE, AND HOW CAN THEY FIX THEM? First, not drinking enough water. Adding fruit is a great way to make water more appealing. Also, make sure you eat enough protein. People often forget to add enough lean protein to support weight loss or muscle maintenance/growth plans. Shoot for around 40-50% of your meals and snacks from protein. Finally, have a good support system. That is always helpful when making lifestyle changes. Our Lake Pleasant or Arrowhead Fit Body Boot Camp teams can help you craft and execute fitness, wellness and nutrition goals!

WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN THE HEALTH/ WELLNESS SPACE FOR 2023? I see more people understanding the value of investing in their health and prioritizing fitness. Utilizing experienced health and wellness professionals is the perfect place to start. It’s worth your time to check in with a fitness professional and get a grasp on where you are and what you need to accomplish to get to where you want to go.

WHAT TIPS DO YOU SUGGEST FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO GET HEALTHY? Define your goals and then aim low. Sounds off, but too often, people come in with lofty goals that aren’t feasible for their current lifestyle. Losing an extra 20-30 lbs. this year is possible with strategic lifestyle changes. However, doing everything all at once compounds stress and can lead to failure. Instead, aim low and start with one daily habit, such as eating protein with every meal, drinking more water, or committing to one non-negotiable day to go to the gym. Gain the momentum of little wins and build your confidence.

WHAT ARE SOME TIME-EFFICIENT WAYS TO GET HEALTHY? Try to increase your frequency of strength and resistance training. I tell my clients it’s better to do five or six 30-minute workouts throughout the week than to try and force themselves to do three to four 1-hour workouts. The exercise volume is the same, but the body responds better to frequency and consistency.

HOW CAN WE HOLD OURSELVES ACCOUNTABLE WITHOUT SPENDING A LOT? I recommend utilizing some of our facility’s SGT (small group training) classes and engaging with that community. Eventually, motivation runs out. Having the accountability of friends and coaches waiting for you to walk through the door each day keeps you on that path to success.

Carrie Weinberg Owner, LMT, CPT, CNC, Desert Sage Bodywork DesertSageBodywork.com WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP TRENDS YOU SEE FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN 2023? Meditation and sleep are high on the list. Also, people are seeking immune health and personalized nutrition.

YOU OFFER MASSAGE SERVICES; HOW CAN THOSE BE BENEFICIAL TO OVERALL SELF-CARE? Massage is a great way to maintain self-care as it helps reduce stress. Desert Sage Bodywork offers membership programs to help you save money while focusing on selfcare. Good massage therapy can help you utilize other fitness activities such as walking, running, hiking, etc.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR THOSE WANTING TO BE HEALTHIER IN 2023? Be consistent with diet, exercise, massage, sleep and meditation that lead to reduced stress. Skipping any of them can negatively impact your overall health. I also believe in scheduling health-related activities as if they were doctor appointments. This creates the time for us to focus on our health.

Eric James Stretching Expert, LMT, Desert Sage Bodywork DesertSageBodywork.com WHY IS STRETCHING IMPORTANT TO OVERALL WELLNESS? We constantly put our bodies in positions that tighten our muscles all day. So, you can’t go from sitting all day to going for a run right after work. Those are exact opposites. Without stretching to loosen everything up, eventually, it will be like a rubber band...you pull too tight, and it will break.

WHAT ARE SOME SIMPLE TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED? Start small, and don’t start on January 1st. That can equate to instant failure. It sets an all-or-nothing mentality and pre-sets up an excuse to quit. Whatever you are trying to do, or undo, will take time. Start one new thing at a time— whether it is a new stretching regimen, fitness plan, or nutrition plan— take it one step at a time so your body can get used to it.

NEW YEAR: NEW PLAN

Why estate planning should be your top New Year’s resolution

Mazza + Niro, PLC - January 2023 Nothing beats an Arizona winter and starting the New Year with bright desert skies, warm sunny days, and cool cozy nights. It’s the perfect weather for fresh starts and resolutions, and beginning 2023 with a bang! We all know the typical New Year’s resolutions: going back to the gym, organizing the garage, learning a new hobby, or saving up for that big vacation. While those may sound cliché, they’re still important goals for everyone’s new year.

However, the resolution you don’t often hear might be the most important for everyone: Estate Planning. It’s understandable — nobody wants to dwell on uncomfortable scenarios, like end-of-life planning or what could happen to loved ones after an unexpected tragedy. Plus, getting shredded or learning to shred on the guitar sound way more fun and exciting than preparing a will or creating a trust. Like going to the gym, estate planning can be intimidating at first, but the results are worth the investment. Creating an estate plan is for everyone — especially if you have children or own a home. An old saying says, “planning today makes for a better tomorrow.” Having an estate plan is one of the most important things you can do to protect your family and preserve your legacy. This is why estate planning is one of the greatest acts of love you can do for the people who matter most in your life.

Whether you’ve never had an estate plan, or your current estate plan is in need of an update, the attorneys at Mazza + Niro are ready to help you start out the new year right! We specialize in creating comprehensive estate plans precisely tailored to the unique needs of each client. The estate plans we create for our clients are thorough, accurate, and up to date, but more importantly, they are built on the reliable, experienced, and transparent legal advice of our local reputable attorneys.

We take pride in creatively solving estate planning problems. We treat our clients like family and work closely with them to craft an estate plan that reflects their wishes and provides real peace of mind. With Mazza + Niro, you can expect quality legal representation from experienced attorneys at competitive rates, with no hidden costs, and total transparency. Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types. Still, there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.

You can keep meat, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant-eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian, which means you occasionally eat meat, but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you decide to be a vegetarian, you do not eat meat. However, you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake— it is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY:

“PLANT-BASED EATING IS SIMPLY EATING MORE FOODS CLOSER TO THEIR HARVESTED STATE WITH MINIMAL PROCESSING.” 20

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat-free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables. Add green leafy veggies to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you must take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good quality fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life. Claudia Martin-Ayoade, is a Registered Dietitian, Writer and Public Speaker passionate about educating people on nutrition and addressing food insecurity.

HEALTHY SKIN IN THE NEW YEAR In your 60s and beyond: 1. Keep your makeup light and bright. 2. Wash your face twice daily, using soft wash rags, followed by applying ample SPF. 3. Drink plenty of water. 4. Use quality skincare products.

THE DESERT AIR CAN BE BRUTAL. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST WAYS TO KEEP SKIN LOOKING FRESH AND HEALTHY?

KEEPING YOUR SKIN HEALTHY & HAPPY IN 2023

ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIANNA STEWART

As we kick off 2023, trying to find the best ways to put focus on health & well-being, including good skincare, is vital. We asked two area skincare professionals to weigh in on how to keep healthy skin all year.

CAITLYN MORTON, RN, BSN All Buttered Up Beauty Bar & Med Spa AllButteredUpMedSpa.com

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU CAN OFFER TO HELP MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN? Always wash off your makeup—never go to bed with it on. Be sure you are deep cleansing each morning and night and use SPF daily. Do not ever pick at blemishes or blackheads.

DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS NEED TO FOCUS ON DIFFERENT SKINCARE REGIMENS. WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS? In your 20s & 30s: 1. Regular facials and quality skincare products keep you looking fresh and young. 2. My biggest tip is to use SPF every day, all day. In your 40s & 50s: 1. Increase sleep and lower stress. 2. One of the most noticeable changes will be a decrease in collagen and elastin, so add those to your daily regimen.

24

S KIN CA R E | BEAU TY

Look for products that have ingredients that are rich and deeply moisturizing. Apply a good body lotion while your skin is damp. Also, consider sleeping with a humidifier. You’ll notice a difference immediately.

DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS NEED TO FOCUS ON DIFFERENT SKINCARE REGIMENS. WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR EACH AGE? In your 20s & 30s: 1. Stick to the basics, including sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30. 2. Introduce your skin to retinol, especially if you are acne prone. 3. Consider adding an exfoliant such as glycolic acid. 4. Use a thick eye cream at night, as that area is often the first to show signs of poor skin health. In your 40s & 50s: 1. Hormonal changes may affect your skin, including losing some elasticity. The most important thing you can do is apply sunscreen diligently. Sun exposure is the leading cause of damage and aging, so protecting your skin from UV rays is crucial. 2. It’s essential to have a great vitamin C serum in your morning routine. Vitamin C has anti-aging and photoprotective effects. In your 60s & beyond: Your skincare routines from now on should always include nourishment, collagen production, moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen. Choose products with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. It’s not about looking younger but about achieving healthy skin.

Creating a Healthy Web Presence for Your Business DARREN SANBORN EXPLAINS WHY A WEBSITE IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR BUSINESS Darren Sanborn has been building websites for more than 25 years—before the Internet was anything like what we have today. He worked for software companies on the East Coast before relocating to North Peoria in 2009 and launching his own web development company, DSanborn Design (DSanbornDesign.com). Today, Sanborn helps small businesses create websites to make a great first impression. We recently asked him about the role of a website in operating a healthy business.

NPL: WHY IS A WEBSITE CRUCIAL TO BUSINESS SUCCESS TODAY? DS: Your website is the first impression of your business. The first thing someone does is Google a company and look at its website. People look for a company that presents an exceptional first impression. Business owners need to think about how their website looks because—consciously or subconsciously— people form an opinion of your business based on your site’s appearance.

NPL: THERE ARE A LOT OF BUILD-YOUROWN-WEBSITE TOOLS AVAILABLE. WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT OR NEED TO HIRE DSANBORN DESIGN? DS: Most people will spend a lot more time building a website and learning how to do it than they will on making money in their business. I can create something basic without a huge investment to make that great first impression.

NPL: DO YOU HELP COMPANIES WITH A WEBSITE THAT NEEDS UPDATING? DS: Absolutely! We work to create a new design, optimize the site for Google and add new features.

keeping aging parents healthy Knowing When It’s Time for Assisted Living

ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS

Making care decisions for elderly loved ones can be difficult. There are many questions and concerns families may have when making these choices. Knowing what to look for when assessing the health of an aging parent is essential, as is having someone who can answer your questions. When you visit with your parents, try to step back and see things from the perspective of an observer, not as an adult child. Check for these signs: • Poor Hygiene. Is your parent bathing regularly? Do they change their clothes? Are the bed sheets clean? Is their hair washed? • Dirty Home. Are there dirty dishes in the sink that seem to have been there a while? Is the mail piling up unopened? Is the bathroom clean?

• Unpaid Bills. Check for stacks of mail. Unfortunately, financial disasters can happen because elderly parents neglect bills or send large sums of money to solicitors and scammers. • Extreme Isolation. Do your once-social parents spend most of their time alone? Isolation is a serious health risk for the elderly. If you spot any warning signs, it might be time for an assessment. But where can you turn? Lori Sears, franchise owner of Assisted Living Locators in Peoria (AssistedLivingLocators. com), helps families navigate the process. Her service is free to families. After an initial assessment, she can offer recommendations for getting started. “It’s not too early to start talking about options,” explains Sears.

“Transitioning aging loved ones to assisted living takes a burden of f the family caregivers. It eases them both medically and emotionally so they can return to being the spouse, child, or grandchild.”

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . CONDITION OF THE MONTH

CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN • Traditional Medical Approach: For pain reduction, over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen are used. Ear drops may also be used to decrease pain. If the ear infection is bacterial, antibiotics like amoxicillin are prescribed. Placing tubes in ears (tympanostomy) and surgical removal of adenoids may be suggested.

• Prescription Drug Side Effects: Antibiotic side effects include stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and even dehydration. Tympanostomy (ear tubes) can cause loss of balance, dizziness, increased risk of more middle ear infections, hearing loss, and even atrophy of the ear drum.

• Chiropractic Approach: Check for subluxations at C1, C2, and C3. Inquire about the frequency of the child’s recurrent ear infections. Specifically, adjust upper cervical subluxation. * Research shows, adenoid removal can result in 2-3x increased risk of upper respiratory infections.
