At this intersection of school and summer, our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We had so many superstar students to choose from! The four kids we chose represent just some of the amazing young people who are a vital part of our community. One of the things that stood out to me was Bentlee Shafer's story. She says that her father—Brad Shafer, who is our local Council Member for the Mesquite District in the City of Peoria—tells her every day to "go change the world." What a great message for not only our youngest citizens, but for all of us. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. And don’t forget to reflect on the impact you, and your kids, are making.

Meet four local young people making an impact in the world through tenacity, intelligence and passion for what they do. These four North Peoria students are balancing school and activities and they are rocking it! They represent just some of the amazing young people that are a vital part of our community.

Gracie Bartos is a senior at Glendale Prep. She is the Vice-Chair for the City of Peoria Youth Advisory Board (YAB), a group of appointed 8th through 12th-grade students who represent the 40,000 youth in our city. She is the middle child of Donna and Peter Bartos. Donna is the founder and CEO of BLOOM365, a non-profit violence prevention organization. Peter is the owner of State 48 Home Services, a local HVAC company providing installation and repair services. Gracie also has an 18-year-old brother and an 11-year-old sister. “My mom inspires me with her heart for charity as a public servant and my dad with his dedication to serving his customers,” she says. “I am constantly inspired by my friends for their kindness, my teachers for their selflessness and my community for its strength. ”Gracie hopes to help cultivate a lasting culture of service on her school’s campus. “With the generous help of faculty and unwavering support of fellow students, I’ve been able to launch a Community Service Committee,” explains Gracie. “Our school bears the name ‘Great Hearts,’ and I find having a heart of service necessary to being ‘great-hearted’.”Gracie is undecided as to where she will attend college but plans on majoring in theology, with the hope of pursuing a Master of Divinity in her graduate studies.

Brightmont Academy

A sophomore at Brightmont Academy, Jameson Proudfit finds inspiration in the literary character Pollyanna. “Reading Pollyanna in 4th grade changed my life,” recalls Jameson. “I loved how she was able to look on the bright side of any situation. I’m also really inspired by Walt Disney, because he created a whole world just out of his imagination and his willingness to believe in himself.” Jameson has high-functioning autism but that doesn’t stop him one bit. He currently holds a part-time job at Titan Alarm and enjoys bike riding, listening to stand-up comedy and video games. “There are a lot of great things about autism, like having a great imagination and a brain that can learn lots of facts easily,” he says. “But there are also challenges as well, like being able to focus in a room full of people, and it can be harder for me to make friends and connect with people, but I don’t give up.” Last month Jameson went on a humanitarian trip to build houses and help people in the Blue Ridge Mountains. His short-term goals include graduating high school, learning to drive and learning to be more confident around people. “In the long term, I want to become the first really successful autistic comedian, buy my own house and live life to the fullest.” Becoming a veterinarian or working with computers are high on his list of future job options. Jameson has an older brother, Weston who is 17 (and Jameson’s best friend), and two younger sisters Lucy, 13, and Caroline, 9. Jameson’s father is the CEO of Titan Alarm, and his mother is a writer, speaker and podcaster. “I think autism is actually a superpower,” says Jameson. “I hope someone reads this and wants to get to know someone better who they might not understand. I think if we could all recognize the value each person we meet has, the world would be a better place.”

Bentlee Shafer, 11

Candeo Peoria

Bentlee is an adventurous sixth-grader at Candeo Peoria. She’s the middle child of Amanda, a work-from-home mom, and Peoria City Councilman Brad Shafer. Bentlee has two brothers, Bobby, 14, and Beau, 9. “I’ve always been very active and adventurous,” says Bentlee. “My mom always says life is an adventure and my dad says that I am an adventure.” Bentlee plays forward on her soccer team and enjoys watersports. In fact, she is ranked 13th in the US for Juniors Wakesurfing. “I wanted to get better at surfing, so I had a lesson with a wakesurf coach at Lake Pleasant,” explains Bentlee. “She encouraged me to enter a surf competition last spring because I was already so comfortable on the board, and I really enjoyed it.” Bentlee started wakesurfing about two years ago, but she’s been waterskiing and wakeboarding for five years. “I like it because it’s fun, active and I like to be outside.” As of right now, Bentlee aspires to be an actress or professional surfer. “That’s a long way from now so that could change,” says Bentlee. She attributes her successes to her parents. “My mom and dad always cheer me on. In soccer, I always worry that the other players are all bigger than me, but my mom reminds me that I am faster! And every day when I leave the house for school, my dad reminds me to go change the world. They call me ‘Tiny but Mighty,’ which helps remind me that I can do anything.”

Mason Forsberg, 14 Liberty High School

Like Bentlee, Mason Forsberg is a competitive wakesurfer. A freshman at Liberty High School, Mason started competitive wakesurfing about a year ago but has been active in water sports his whole life. “I like to wakesurf because it is a very unique sport, and I enjoy learning new skills,” explains Mason. “It’s also given me lots of time to spend with my parents. We go to the lake two or three times a week, just the three of us, and we are there for a couple of hours each time.” Last year Mason placed second at Nationals for amateur men and was invited to the World’s Competition where he placed in the top 10. He also enjoys lifting weights and playing basketball with his friends. He plans to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after he graduates from high school. Mason has two older sisters, Reeslyn and Mallory. His mom, Katie, teaches gymnastics, and his dad, Russ, is a physician’s associate. The Forsbergs also own Twisted Sugar in North Peoria, where Mason enjoys helping customers. “I’m always striving to be the best that I can possibly be, so I can look back and say I left nothing on the table. That inspires me to be the best version of myself.”

Financial Advisor Offers Tips on Starting a Savings Account for Your Children When They’re Young ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

Becoming a parent is one of the most exciting and scary times in one’s life. Paying for the hospital bill, diapers, car seats and all the needs of an infant can seem daunting. So much so that new parents rarely start to consider saving for college right after a child is born. Kevin Naef, Financial Advisor for Edward Jones in the West Valley (EdwardJones.com or at 623.974.0040), understands first-hand what new parents are experiencing. “We were so excited and, like a lot of people, we wanted to give our new baby daughter everything, including an education. College is expensive, so planning for education when we brought our bundle of joy home was key.” Naef offers some insightful and timely tips for planning for college:

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST WAYS TO START PUTTING MONEY ASIDE FOR COLLEGE? If you have young children (or grandchildren), you may be thinking of ways to save for their future educational needs. You might consider a 529 plan, which offers tax advantages and other benefits. But a 529 plan also brings with it a key question: Who should be the owner? You could choose to own the 529 plan yourself and name a child as the beneficiary. Or as the owner, you’re free to name another family member as a beneficiary if the original one chooses not to use the 529 plan assets for qualified educational purposes. You can also designate a successor owner so that the assets won’t have to go through probate if you pass away. Alternatively, you could establish a custodial account. In that account, the 529 plan is owned by the minor child, who is also the beneficiary, and the child gains full control of the account once they are of legal age. Until the child reaches this age, you as custodian, control the account and can designate a successor custodian to step in should you become unable to care for the financial account.

There are also traditional, parent-owned plans. The ownership model won’t affect the amount accumulated in the plan, and the custodial and traditional arrangements will have the same impact on the beneficiary’s eligibility for need-based financial aid.

SO WHICH IS BETTER, A TRADITIONAL OR A CUSTODIAL 529 PLAN? There’s no one right answer, but there are a few things to keep in mind. • Taxes – If you move assets into a custodial 529 plan, you could incur taxes and should consult with a tax advisor. • Beneficiary’s Control of Assets – Upon reaching 18 or 21, a child gains control of a custodial 529 account and can use the assets for any purpose. If the money isn’t used for qualified educational expenses, the child will incur taxes and penalties. • Grandparent ownership – Grandparents can choose to own a traditional or open a custodial 529 plan account for a grandchild. A grandparent-owned 529 plan’s distributions could hurt a student’s eligibility for need-based federal financial aid, but distributions from a custodial 529 plan account are not reported on the FAFSA. However, if you’re a grandparent, and you’re considering opening a 529 account, you might want to check with a school’s financial aid office well before the money is needed. Naef stresses it is important to think carefully before deciding on the ownership of a 529 plan and get the help you need from your tax professional and financial advisor. A 529 plan can be a valuable tool, so you’ll want to maximize its benefits.

Summer vacation has been great for hanging out with the family. But with the kids back in school, how about a quick getaway just for the adults? Here are a few of our favorite adult escapes close to home.

TIP: Plan your stay Monday through Saturday when you can dine at elements, but take time before dinner to grab drinks at jade bar.

Plan your meal for sunset, when you can watch the colors burn across the sky and the shadows grow long across Camelback Mountain. WIGWAM ARIZONA You can feel the history when you stay at Wigwam Arizona (wigwamarizona.com). The 440-acre resort opened as a small lodge in 1929. It now offers 331 rooms and suites, three golf courses, nine tennis courts, three swimming pools, a fitness center, a spa and three restaurants. The only West Valley resort option on our list, Wigwam Arizona is about a halfhour southeast of North Peoria. You can book a room, casita or suite in traditional territorial Adobe style, or book an upscale room in the Oasis Collection, situated around a quiet gated pool. If you prefer a golf-focused getaway, book one of the Fairway Collection rooms or suites overlooking the Robert Trent Jones, Sr.-designed Blue Course. Dining at Wigwam offers a culinary treat. Litchfield’s serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. The historic restaurant is an ideal setting for a romantic dinner. It holds a 2022 Wine Spectator Award and hosts The Wigwam Wine Dinner Series (the next event is August 27th). Red Allen’s Bar & Grill has great patio seating looking out over the golf course, serving lunch and dinner

daily. Try the burgers or the seared salmon bowl with roasted yams. Wigwam Bar serves food all day. The best spot is in the open-air courtyard under the canopy of the trees, giving it a European café vibe under brightly colored umbrellas. Recreation is non-stop at Wigwam. Along with the golf courses and tennis courts, there are three outdoor pools where you can book a poolside cabana and order bites and drinks. The Tower Pool includes a 25-foot water slide. In addition to the tennis courts and lawn games, you can also escape to LeMonds Aveda Salon + Spa. This is a healing sanctuary offering up some of the best treatments across the Valley. Choose a custom massage, body treatment or facial and escape for the day. Book a treatment and spend the day relaxing at the spa or poolside in the courtyard. If you want a quiet oasis, try the Garden Guestroom with a private 130-square-foot patio looking out over the desert landscaping. An Immerse Guestroom includes a freestanding, luxurious bathtub with views of Camelback Mountain from the resort’s third floor. Dining: Executive Chef Charles Wiley and Chef de Cuisine Alfred Muro serve modern American cuisine at Hearth ‘61. Enjoy the patio or the massive floor-toceiling windows while you dine. The hamachi crudo is an exceptional starter. Recommended entrées include the Niman Ranch tenderloin or the Duroc Farm’s pork chop. You love treating your fur babies, but who knows what is really inside those store-bought bites. With these simply DIY pet treats, you can ensure your pets only get the freshest ingredients. The bonus is that you can adjust the size to fit your pet and your pet’s needs.

NO-BAKE PEANUT BUTTER BALLS INGREDIENTS • 1 cup pumpkin puree • 1/4 to 1/3 cup peanut butter • 1/4 cup milk or half-and-half • 3 cups rolled oats

DIRECTIONS 1. In a bowl, mix pumpkin puree, peanut butter and milk on medium for 1 minute. 2. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups rolled oats and stir. 3. Use a small scoop or spoon to create 1/4inch balls. 4. Roll balls into remaining 1/2 cup oats to lightly top. 5. Place into a sealed container and refrigerate.

Since 2016 Dr. Kelly Patriquin, DVM has been providing affordable pet care all over the Valley and in Tucson. Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit (DrKellysVet. com) has six fully equipped vehicles. DrivingMBA (DrivingMBA.com) aims to reduce that stress by offering a comprehensive driving program that gets both parents and teens involved in the process. They are teaching new drivers the skills needed to be safe and competent behind the wheel.

Maria Wojtczak and her husband, Rich, opened the first DrivingMBA facility in Scottsdale in 2003. They opened their second location in Arrowhead in North Glendale in March 2021. The DrivingMBA program is designed to help novice drivers obtain a better understanding of the skills required to be competent, responsible drivers and to develop safe driving habits and decision-making skills.

DRIVINGMBA SIMULATION LABS The DrivingMBA program utilizes fundamental simulation labs that immerse students in real-world scenarios. It teaches mastering turns, how vehicle weight and speed impact stopping distance, shuffle steering and more. The simulation has more than 35 scenarios of what could go wrong—such as harsh weather conditions, redlight runners and even blown-out tires—and how to respond to problems. Once the student has successfully completed the SIM portion of the program, they advance to on-road lessons with an instructor. The core program includes five 2-hour lessons, including the road test for licensing. Each drive is scored to track the student’s progress.

In Arizona, it is believed that more than 55% of the households own a pet, and of those, more than 40% own a dog. However, finding the right dog for your family can be a challenge if you don’t know where to look and how to pick the right breed. Julie Semple, North Peoria resident and dog breeder at Baileys Ranch (BaileysRanchAZ.com), says there are many things to look at before choosing a fur-ever friend. "Do your research on specific characteristics of different breeds and see what fits best with your family’s lifestyle. An older couple might need a smaller, calmer breed, whereas a young family might do better with a medium-size dog that has more energy to match their busy lifestyle."

FINDING A PET THROUGH A BREEDER There are several ways to find a dog to add to your family. Shelters and private breeders are the most common options. One of the best ways to find a perfect dog for your family is through a breeder. However, Semple urges you to do your homework to select the right breeder. "There are just as many unethical breeders for every ethical breeder. Make sure you have really researched who you are about to do business with," Semple says. "Don’t send deposits or pay for a puppy until you are sure that you are dealing with a reputable company or breeder." She adds that the internet and social media can be full of fakes and scams as well, so buyers beware.

TAKING HOME A SHELTER DOG Semple explains that breeders aren’t the only option when it comes to picking the right pet for your household. “Shelter dogs need loving homes as well. They take a different kind of commitment due to their possible past and current circumstances. When you finally decide to add a fur baby to your life, please remember it is a permanent commitment. Dogs are heart healers and live to make us happy. It is the most rewarding decision you will ever make.” While shelters do offer a great option for finding a dog to love and care for, it is best to do your homework with shelters as well. Make sure it is a reputable shelter. Research ahead of time what sort of breed you would like to bring home to your family. While there are a lot of dogs in need, it may take more than one visit to a shelter before you find the right one for your home. Here in the Valley, the Arizona Humane Society (AZHumane. org) is the most recognized family of shelters. LOOKING FOR A SERVICE DOG? Another issue many families are facing is the need to find a service or companion dog. Whether for yourself or for a child, making sure you find the right animal is a must. According to Megan Braganza with Assistance Canines, there are some very important things you need to consider when selecting a service animal, especially for a child. “In matching a service dog with a child, it is important to consider the family's lifestyle and pick a dog that will be able to seamlessly integrate into the household. Temperament testing is an integral part of the process. In most cases a puppy or dog whose temperament is middle of the road, not too shy or outgoing, with a drive to please is ideal.” There are several conditions in which a child or individual would need a service or companion animal, including

diabetes, seizures, migraines and PTSD. Service dogs can also be trained for some psychiatric disorders, as well as other physical limitations such as mobility issues, hearing issues and vision impairment. Braganza says there is a protocol to follow. “The first step in getting a service dog is always to speak with your doctor to see if a dog would be a good addition to the treatment plan for the individual and their family. The next step is to reach out to either a breeder who has experience with service dogs or a service dog trainer, who will be able to match you with the right dog for your needs and provide the resources for a training program right for you.” Whichever option you choose, take time to carefully consider the best four-legged addition to your family—and have fun at the local dog parks around town.
