July—Summer and Adventure Welcome to summer in Arizona and one year of North Peoria Lifestyle! This issue marks our one-year anniversary, and we thank each and every one of you for coming along on an exhilarating ride. We have so many more exciting issues ahead. As the North Peoria Lifestyle editor, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to reach out and say hello. I've been the editor for 11 of the first 12 issues, and it has been such an honor meeting so many of you throughout our wonderful community. Always feel free to reach out with questions or suggestions. While everyone else in the country gathers around firepits for cool summer nights, we in North Peoria are seeking out ways to cool down, finding a bit of reprieve from the heat and slowing down during the triple-digits of summer. That's the focus of this issue—finding ways to embrace our Arizona summers and seeking out a bit of adventure near and far. I'm spending this month taking advantage of local staycations, sipping some cool cocktails by the pool, maybe an afternoon or two at the lake and watching for those glorious sunsets that usually come our way each summer. From the entire team at North Peoria Lifestyle, we wish you a Happy Fourth of July and a summer filled with fun and amazing moments. Thanks for supporting us as we support local businesses. VAI Resort Opens Spring 2023 in Glendale VAI Resort is set to open in late Spring of 2023 in Glendale. American author Margaret J. Wheatley once said, “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” Meet Jesus Pineda, Shelby Duplessis and Amanda Shafer. These three Peoria residents, community leaders and business owners—all from various walks of life—have made it their mission to improve the city they call home.

THE MOTIVATED MAVERICK Jesus Pineda, 37, is the owner of Legacy Avenue, LLC (LegacyAve.com), an investment strategies and insurance solutions firm. He has called Peoria home since age five. Growing up here instilled in him the importance of making a difference where you live. He is raising his children with those values. Pineda is a member of the West Valley Mavericks Foundation, a non-profit that develops and supports programs that improve the community. It has raised over $518k to benefit 88 charities throughout the West Valley. “It's an honor to be a part of this group of men who use their talents and connections to bless others.”

As a mother, business owner and president of development for Empire Group of Companies (BuiltByEmpire.com), it doesn't seem like Shelby Duplessis, 50, would have much time for anything else. However, she is involved with at least eight organizations, including past president and board member of Leadership West, board member for Stand Up Speak Up Save a Life and co-founder of West Valley for Change. She also serves on the City of Peoria Board of Historic Preservation Commission. “It excites me to live in a city with a great foundation and to be a part of such smart growth,” says Duplessis. Initially attracted to Peoria for its affordability, Duplessis grew to love it for the family-oriented feel. She's proud to be a part of the city's remarkable growth. Amanda Shafer THE WARRIOR MOTHER Amanda Shafer, 42, is a mom and owner of Summer Lovin' Spray Tan (summerlovinspraytan.square.site). Originally from Salt Lake City, Shafer moved to Peoria in 2001 when her husband, Brad, was stationed at nearby Luke Air Force Base. Shafer comes from a long line of community servants. “My mom and dad were very involved in the community,” she said. “They taught me the importance of being active and involved.” In keeping with her family legacy, Shafer is involved with Mother's Without Borders (MothersWithoutBorders.org), an organization committed to strengthening communities in developing countries, and Operation Underground Railroad (OurRescue.org), a non-profit working to eliminate trafficking and exploitation. Closer to home, Shafer worked with other moms to get new playground equipment for their local community park. She also headed fundraising efforts to have much-needed grass laid in the quad area of her children's school. Shafer also works with JustServe.org, a landing site where people can find volunteer opportunities. “It’s easy to sit home and complain, but it’s another level to put your shoulder to the wheel and make changes,” Shafer said. “If you want to make the world a better place, go out and do it.”

Summer pool days demand a great patio, but creating an inviting outdoor space can sometimes be challenging here in the Valley of the Sun. How do you take your backyard from frumpy to fabulous? Batter up! An exclamation Peoria resident Greg Goodman has heard probably thousands of times. He's been stepping up to the plate for decades and has no plans of giving up his favorite sport any time soon. His love of the game is a driving force and it seems he just can't get enough. He brings that love of baseball to his new home in Peoria.

FOUNDING OF LONG ISLAND MUTINY Goodman, a securities arbitration attorney and native of Long Island, NY, started playing baseball as a young boy. He played throughout school and at C.W. Post in Long Island where he went to college. “I played in little league as a kid and kept going,” says Goodman. “I played and I also managed baseball teams.” In his 30s, Goodman joined a team in the Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL), an amateur baseball league for adults 18 years of age and older. The league was founded in 1988 and is the fastest growing adult baseball organization in the country with 45,000 members and 3,200 teams. In the late 90s, Goodman found himself on a team called the Hicksville Pirates. He played for several years as a Pirate, but when things within the team started to go awry, Goodman and another teammate decided to leave and start their own team. Many of their teammates followed, and thus, Long Island Mutiny was born. “Since it was a mutiny from the Pirates we decided to use that as our name,” he explains. Goodman takes the tongue-in-cheek name of the team even further by sending out communications to the team written in pirate style and even flying pirate flags at games. “We like to have fun!” There have been several incarnations of the team over the years, but one thing has remained a constant. “We tend to win!”

LONG ISLAND MUTINY COMES TO ARIZONA Goodman moved to Peoria from New York in January 2020. He joined a local MSBL team and his teammates found him to be a great leader. He was asked to manage the team and soon the

itch began to reform his beloved Mutiny. “In the summer of 2021, the Mutiny was reborn in the desert.” The Mutiny now has a roster of 20 players and plays in the 45+ division of the MSBL, meaning all the players must be 45 years old or older. “It's old man baseball,” laughs Goodman. In addition to managing and coaching The Mutiny, Goodman also plays catcher and was a middle in-fielder. After playing for so long one might wonder why Goodman keeps going. His reason is simple—he simply loves the game. “I love the camaraderie,” he says. “My dad instilled the love of the game in me and I've had great coaches all my life, and that makes me want to give that back to others.”

LONG ISLAND MUTINY IS AN ARIZONA HIT Goodman also says he loves traveling to away games and tournaments. And of course, he loves the thrill of winning. He says the team takes competitiveness seriously and has boasting rights beyond winning games. “We've been told we have the best looking uniforms in the league, we have home and away uniforms and all the accessories.” This is the first summer the team has played in Arizona, but Goodman is confident he has built a strong team that will carry on the Mutiny legacy of success. “The Mutiny has always seemed to attract really good players,” he says. “When we win tournaments we get trophies and rings, it's great.”

The current team has players from all walks of life with one thing in common—they love the game. During the winter and spring, the team plays on local high school fields and in the summer they will play at the various Major League Baseball training facilities around town. The summer season runs April through August, and the team will play 20 games plus have playoffs during that time.

There is something a bit magical about the South of France. It conjures images of rolling hills set along the Mediterranean, vast vineyards and olive trees swaying in the breezes. The images come to life when you book a luxury barge cruise with European Waterways (EuropeanWaterways.com). It offers the perfect opportunity to experience the region’s slow pace. Canal du Midi is a 330-year-old canal that runs from the Mediterranean coast inland through the famous Languedoc wine region. This is an opportunity for a true escape from everyday life.

WHAT IS A BARGE CRUISE? Barges, originally used to shuttle goods along the inner waterways throughout Europe, are now floating hotels. European Waterways operates barges from April to October. One of three boats to traverse Canal du Midi, Enchanté is an “ultra-deluxe” converted barge with four cabins for up to eight passengers. Each suite on Enchanté features an ensuite bathroom. All suites are on the lower level, while the salon, dining room, open kitchen and sun deck are above. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the staff accommodating and the pace of the barge allows you to slow down and unwind. In fact, the barge moves slowly along the canal, giving passengers a chance to stroll along or ride one of the onboard bicycles.

THE BARGING EXPERIENCE The barging experience is not anything like other cruises. With only eight passengers (although some boats have the capacity for 10 to 20 passengers), it provides a quiet escape. Each day, you cruise slowly along the canal, going a total distance of about 50 miles over one week. The day's leisurely routine begins with a sit-down breakfast and specially prepared dishes from the chef. You either cruise in the morning and take a short excursion in the afternoon, or vice versa. Lunch is a gourmet 3-course meal paired with local wines. Dinner is a beautiful production with appetizers, main course, cheese course and dessert. Again, everything is paired with both a white and red wine.

EXCURSIONS ALONG THE WAY Throughout the cruise, there are small stops along the way. This area of France is filled with gourmet delights and history, and you have a chance to explore both during your cruise. You’ll visit l’Oulibo, a high-end olive oil producer growing Lucques olives. Enjoy a tasting of the oils and the olives, and pick up a few to take home. Another day, you’ll taste local balsamic vinegar. This is a real treat and a unique experience sampling a variety of flavors. During the barge cruise, you’ll have a chance to visit three of what may be the most beautiful towns in France: Minerve, Lagrasse and Carcassonne. Lagrasse is an artisan town surrounding an 8th-century Benedictine Abbey. Minerve is home to a 12th-century Cathar fort with spectacular views. Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city with 52 watchtowers and portcullis. There is also an excursion to Narbonne, once a Roman capital. Dickel Bourbon has flavors of vanilla, cherry and orange, making it perfect for a cool summer cocktail. Shake 1.5 oz Dickel Bourbon, .75 oz orange juice, .5 oz Orange Blossom honey syrup (2 parts honey; 1 part water) and .5 oz lemon juice over ice. Fine strain into a pilsner glass and top with 4.5 oz Pilsner beer. Garnish with fresh orange wedge.

Prosecco makes a great cocktail and there’s nothing more traditional than a peach bellini. This is an ideal drink for a hot summer afternoon. To start, peel and remove the pits from two peaches. Place in a blender until smooth. Pour the peach purée (1.5 oz) into a chilled champagne flute. Top with 3 oz Gancia Prosecco DOC, and stir gently. Garnish with a peach slice.

Check out these great places to make a splash and beat the heat in the West Valley Summers in Arizona are hot! We love to take to the water to cool down. Here in Peoria, we have an assortment of splash pads to cool the kids down—Pioneer Community Park, Camino á Lago Park, Rio Vista Community Park and Pioneer Park all have splash pads open in July daily from 10 a.m to 8 p.m. But what about something with even more of a splash? Whether it’s water skiing, renting a boat, sailing, heading out on a jet ski, paddle boarding or hydroflying, you can find it all nearby. Waterpark adventures await as well, with everything from a lazy river to adrenaline-pumping thrills and spills. Here are our favorite water adventures for this summer.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park Take advantage of the 23,362-acre water park in your own backyard. Lake Pleasant has 114 miles of shoreline and it’s only about 15 minutes from North Peoria. If you want some serious water fun, head to Hurricane Harbor Phoenix. You can find rides for those who want to get the adrenaline pumping. In fact, The Anaconda was voted a Top 5 Water Slide by the Travel Channel’s Extreme Water Parks show. If you prefer, head to the family-friendly play area or hop on a raft and float the lazy river. Afterward, chow down at Beachside Grill or Cowabunga Street Tacos.

New at Scorpion Bay Marina at Lake Pleasant is Paqua Park, offering more than 7,000 square feet of inflatable water fun. Open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday during the summer, you book 45-minute sessions. This is for anyone age seven and older and you will jump, flip and slide your way in and out of the water. You must book online in advance.

Slide your way to some cool fun in the floating waterslide at Pleasant Harbor. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. now through August. Slide down one of the three long slides or do the 22-foot jump into the lake. You can get 1-hour ($35), half-day ($55) or full-day passes ($70). Check out Night Flights every Thursday through Sunday from 8 to 10 p.m. ($30) when lights and music change the slide experience.
