These men, and all other men, are inspirational and have the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the people in their lives. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those around them. This month we are honoring men and their contributions to our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impacts you make and the ripple effect that often ensues are all worth it. New to Off-Roading? Lifted Trucks Offers Expert Tips for Getting Off-Road

Looking to get off-road and want to make sure you're prepared? We went straight to the experts. James Pillor and Dustin Desmarteau were friends at Arizona State University and worked through the ranks at what is now Lifted Trucks (LiftedTrucks.com). The two, now co-owners of the business, have established locations through the Valley, including one in North Glendale, specializing in custom trucks. Kyle Schlegel, avid outdoor enthusiast and off-road suspension and accessory expert at The Lift Shop at Lifted Trucks, offers the best tips for those new to off-roading. • Always go with a friend, especially at night. Ideally, it’s best to go with another vehicle if one breaks down or gets stuck. • Know where you are and where you are going. Pay close attention to GPS, maps, trail markers and other points of reference as you drive. • Have basic tools and survival supplies with you. Always carry food, water, tire repair kits, an air pump, tow straps and a first aid kit. • Know your limits and those of your vehicle; do not drive past your ability on unfamiliar trails. • Keep your vehicle properly maintained and ready for off-roading. Most issues on the trail can be avoided with proper vehicle maintenance of your tires, shocks, steering and 4x4 system. • Always assume there is an oncoming vehicle around that blind corner. Arizona is full of "Mountain-Pass" style trails with extreme drop-offs and blind corners that are twoway trails. The 26-mile Backway to Crown King from Lake Pleasant is a prime example. • Respect the land and its residents. This is common sense, but Schlegel sees people ignore this more than anything else. It’s unfortunate to see trash alongside a trail or staging area or people trespassing onto privately owned land and vandalizing it. • Pay for the off-highway vehicle (OHV) permit for your vehicle! Those fees go towards marking more trails and keeping them maintained for us to all enjoy.

3 Favorite Off-Road Adventures GET OFF THE PAVEMENT AND ENJOY THE RUGGED BEAUTY SURROUNDING NORTH PEORIA

Arizona is an off-roader's paradise. People come from all over to take advantage of the plentiful public lands and remote historical sites. Some of the best off-roading options in North Peoria are simply down the road. Before you head out, even if it is only for a quick outing on a moderate trail, remember to follow the tips outlined in Tips for Off-Roading, on page 14 in this issue. These are three favorite off-road adventures. You can find more adventures online at AZOffRoad.net.

BACKWAY TO CROWN KING Crown King is a funky little town about 70 miles north of Peoria via I-17 north and then across maintained forest roads. You'll find the historic Crown King Saloon & Cafe (the oldest continuously operating saloon in the state), a variety of cabins and a general store. But, for off-road enthusiasts, there is another way— the Backway to Crown King. This is a 26-mile trail north out of Lake Pleasant, following Cow Creek Road and the signs to Crown King. This challenging route can take 4 to 5 hours. It requires a 4-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicle. This is one of the most popular trails, so be aware of other vehicles.

CASTLE HOT SPRINGS ROAD Driving north from Lake Pleasant, the oasis in the desert at Castle Hot Springs is a surprise. You can see the palm trees and oasis in the distance, although the resort is private property. Continue past the resort and eventually connect with Highway 74 to make your way home. Castle Hot Springs Road is a 17-mile loop that takes about 3 hours. There are some winding mountain areas, but this is a relatively easy trail, maintained throughout the year. Unlike the Backway to Crown King, you can complete the Castle Hot Springs loop in a stock SUV, even if it is not 4WD.

HARQUAHALA MOUNTAIN BACKCOUNTRY BYWAY The 10.5-mile byway climbs from Eagle Eye Road near Aguila (about 25 miles west of Wickenburg) to the summit of Harquahala Mountain at 5,691 feet. In the 1920s, The Smithsonian Institute operated a solar observatory at the peak (the highest point in Southwest Arizona). Its remains are now on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also spot remains of many mining operations along the road, including foundations, equipment and mine shafts. While the lower mountain is easily accessible in a high-clearance vehicle, the upper part is more challenging with steep climbs and sharp drops off the side. This is part of the Bureau of Land Management, and hikers can explore the Harquahala Wilderness Area from the summit.

McGuire comes from a long line of cattle ranchers. His father and grandfathers on both sides were ranchers and he’s carried on the family legacy. He started Bonine Ranch 42 years ago. Today, it spans 176,000 acres across Peoria, Surprise and Buckeye. McGuire enjoys working with his two sons and daughter on the ranch. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? My life is fun. I’m doing the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do my entire life. I’m lucky. I like what I do.

Thomas Reichenberger, Jeff Cook and Shannon Horn trained together in jiujitsu. All three are passionate about the sport and knew they could bring something unique to the community. Allied Jiu Jitsu (AlliedJiuJitsu.com) opened its doors in November 2019. Opening a business right before a global pandemic hit was unfortunate timing, but things are now in full swing. A solid member base consists of people of all ages, skill levels and walks of life. The men believe in giving back to the community that has been so welcoming to them. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 a.m. the gym offers free classes to veterans and first responders. Reichenberger credits Cook with the idea. “He was a Special Forces Army Green Beret, and he teaches the class. It’s important to him.” Jiu-jitsu has a way of bringing people together. “At the gym I see so many people forming relationships and connecting with people they might not have otherwise,” says Reichenberger. Horn believes in the power of jiu-jitsu. “It will literally change your life. You won’t understand unless you jump in and try it, but you are surrounded by so many great people who sincerely want to see you improve.” CONTINUED >

Understanding Jiu-Jitsu What is Jiu-Jitsu? Jiu-Jitsu comes from the Japanese “Jū” meaning gentle and “Jutsu” meaning art. Jiu-Jitsu is the “gentle art”. It is a form of martial art that uses no weapons. Instead, it focuses on holds, throws and blows to overcome an opponent. It developed over the centuries, originating in 17th-century Japan.

How Does Jiu-Jitsu TEENS

Jiu-Jitsu is great for teens. Reichenberger mentions that many high-school wrestlers use jiu-jitsu to train during the off-season. It is a great workout and a way to stay in shape for all teens. It is also a great way to build confidence.

Work the Body? Jiu-Jitsu is often called “human chess” because it requires physical and mental awareness. Physically, it uses pressure-based isometric movements that increase strength and cardio, making it a great way to lose weight and improve muscle tone. Mentally, you must think ahead and plan your next movement, so it helps develop reasoning skills.

Who Can Benefit from Jiu-Jitsu? Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent workout for anyone. Reichenberger emphasizes that it helps the mind as well as the body. “It’s a great way to build confidence and get all of your energy A D U LT S

Adults find benefits from the sport as well. It offers something for everyone, from weight loss to confidence building. It helps with strength training, flexibility and mental acuity.

June brings Father's Day and graduations—and trying to find the right gift for either can sometimes turn from fun to chore. We want to help bring the joy back!

HISTORY OF FATHER'S DAY: The third Sunday in June is Father's Day throughout the U.S. and even in many European countries. It’s an old holiday. As early as the Middle Ages, Catholics across Europe celebrated St. Joseph's Day, in honor of the Earthly father of Jesus, on June 19th. That evolved into a day honoring all fathers. The holiday didn't become a celebration in the U.S. until 1972 when Richard Nixon signed a law recognizing the third Sunday in June as an official holiday. TYPES OF GIFTS FOR DADS: Father’s Day celebrates the relationship between fathers and their children (and grandchildren). Perhaps the best gifts somehow relate to your relationship with your father, grandfather or even significant other as the father of your children. Gifts that mean something to the giver and the recipient best convey that celebration. However, that meaning is extremely personal. What works for one person might not work for another. Gifts, especially those from young children to their fathers, might be homemade. They can be something that honors a favorite pastime, or perhaps you might want to give the gift of time. In a recent YouGov poll, dads across America ranked what they want for Father’s Day: • A card • A special day with the family • Clothing • Something homemade • Tools • Electronics • Hobby items Other items included a certificate for a unique experience, a keepsake gift and jewelry.

GRADUATIONS GALORE: June also brings graduations. From kindergarten to middle school, high school and

college to graduate school, there seem to be a lot of graduation invitations flying around in June. Do you need to buy a graduation present for everyone? The answer is complicated. If you received an announcement, a gift is not necessary. However, if you receive an invitation to a party or ceremony, giving some gift is proper etiquette. But you should consider your relationship with the graduate and the graduate’s age.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES: While you probably won’t be obligated to gift a child graduating kindergarten or elementary school (unless you’re the parent or a proud grandparent), most high school seniors appreciate a gift. For high school graduates, money is always appreciated, but if you prefer to give gifts, you might consider: • Gift cards to national or online stores • Gift cards to national restaurant chains • Travel items, from suitcases to backpacks • Technology gifts from computers to headphones or Bluetooth speakers • Subscriptions to streaming services • Items for a new dorm, such as mini-fridges, toaster ovens or tableware

COLLEGE GRADUATES: As with high school graduates, focus on the graduate’s needs. For many college graduates, they will be setting up a first apartment or moving cross-country to take a job. While money is always welcome, you can also find gifts that help them transition from student to working adult. Think about: • A beautiful pen or portfolio to make a great first impression • A journal to document the adventures • Gift certificates for nights out, a celebratory dinner or even season tickets to something in their new locale • Items for their new homes or gift cards to national stores Whatever gift you choose, ensure that you think about what the recipient wants and values more than what you want to give.
