SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ESCAPE TERRANEA RESORT OFFERS A BREATHTAKING PACIFIC OCEAN ESCAPE ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TERRANEA RESORT
Located only 30 minutes from LAX or Long Beach, the luxurious Terranea Resort sits on the coastal bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It offers sweeping ocean views, outdoor adventures, fine dining, great golf and relaxing spa visits.

TERRANEA RESORT CALIFORNIA The Palos Verdes Peninsula is one of Southern California’s most scenic coastlines. It offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The coastline became famous thanks to a 1950’s television series called Sea Hunt, in which Lloyd Bridges played Mike Nelson. Protecting that unspoiled coast was part of the philosophy that guided the property owners when they set out to open a new resort. Terranea Resort (pronounced terra-NAY-a) opened in June 2009. The Mediterranean-inspired resort is the ultimate tranquil resort, but with plenty of activities and options to keep the entire family happy. It is only 30 minutes from either LAX or Long Beach, yet seems to be a world away. The 102-acre resort includes 75 untouched acres, which offers the opportunity for hiking, biking, and appreciating the local flora and fauna. The Palos Verdes Peninsula trail system runs along the coast and a 14-acre coastal wildlife habitat surrounds the property. It’s easy from the trails or the resort’s patios to see the California Blue and Pacific gray whales that migrate through the area. Sea lions play near the cove and dolphin pods come within view of the shore. The resort itself offers a luxurious stay, with 326 guestrooms and 34 suites in the main building. There are also 50 three-bedroom ocean view casitas and 32 villas. For the ultimate escape, book one of the Bungalows at Terranea. There are 20 of these two-bedroom bungalows adjacent to the spa, each with wellness amenities.
The resort offers something for the entire family. A team of Experience Concierge members can help answer every question and make arrangements to dine, play and experience the area. The natural beauty of the area—combined with Terranea’s philosophy of ecological sustainability—offers an ideal respite or a base for great outdoor adventures. And with 228 fire pits and fireplaces, you’ll be sure to find a corner to relax. Book at Terranea.com.
ACTIVITIES The natural environment of the Palos Verdes Peninsula lends itself to an array of activities. Note that activities might vary depending on the time of year.
Water Adventures: Go ocean kayaking through the kelp beds of the Catalina Channel underwater reserve with an instructor. Hop on a stand-up paddleboard. Go tide pooling through the coastal preserve with the resort naturalist. Book a whale watching and harbor tour. Kids’ Activities: Kids can join the Junior Golf Camps at The Links at Terranea for lessons from a PGA professional. Children from 4 to 12 can join the Tide Pool Kids Club to explore the beach and bluffs. Land Adventures: Walk along the coastal trails to nearby Point Vicente Lighthouse. Join the Terranea falconer to experience the falcons, Harris’s hawks and Eurasian eagle-owls. Let an instructor teach you archery by the cove. Set up your easel by the coast for en plein air painting with the help of a local artist. Culinary Delights: Experience the art of mixology using local ingredients and make two handcrafted cocktails. Young and old will enjoy cake decorating with the pastry team— and take the 6” cake back to your room!

SPA The Spa at Terranea is easily a destination itself. The tranquil, ocean-front spa welcomes you with natural stone, native woods, bamboo and water elements. You can relax in the quiet with the doors open and a sea breeze wafting in, gently soothing you before your treatment. There are 25 treatment rooms for massage, hydrotherapy and facials. Couples can book one of the Signature Treatment Suites, each with a copper soaking tub, fireplace, infrared sauna, Swiss showers and couples’ massage tables. Outside, you can enjoy the oceanfront pool and relax in a private cabana. The Fitness & Wellness Center invites you to workout, take part in a yoga class or use the fitness equipment.
GOLF The Links at Terranea is a nine-hole, par-3 Todd Eckenrode-designed oceanfront course. Players have dramatic ocean vistas as they play. There is a multi-tiered, short-game practice area. The Links’ Golf Academy offers on-site instruction from PGA professionals.

EAT Mar’sel: Terranea’s signature restaurant puts a California twist on classics with a seasonal menu. mar’sel (derived from Spanish mar for sea and French sel for salt) uses local ingredients along with herbs and produce grown on the property. The outdoor terrace offers perfect al fresco dining. Nelson’s: A casual cliff-top venue featuring coastal cuisine and breathtaking sunset vistas around the firepit or in the comfortable dining room. Catalina Kitchen: The resort’s all-day dining venue offers indoor dining or on the patio with gorgeous ocean views. Bashi: Exquisitely blends Asian cuisines with California products. Specialties include Sizzling Shaking Beef and Garlic Noodles. The inside is comfortable, but the patio offers spectacular views. Sea Beans: The resort’s boutique café serves gourmet coffee, specialty espresso drinks and organic teas. Housemade pastries, muffins or croissants are offered each morning with sandwiches, wraps and smoothies mid-day. The homemade gelato is perfect for a warm afternoon. The Grill at the Resort Pool: The poolside bar and grill serves up light fares and great cocktails. There are also big screens, making this the perfect spot to catch the big game. Solviva: solviva in the Spa uses nutrient-rich ingredients along with locally and seasonally available produce.
DRINK Lobby Bar & Lounge: An evening at a quiet table by the fireplace is near perfection. The only way it gets any better is to sit by one of the firepits on the terrace and watch the sunset. Cielo Point: This seasonal adults-only retreat is the ideal spot for a cool iced beverage. Bar at Mar’sel: The panoramic ocean backdrop is perfect for drinks at the upscale bar at mar’sel. Order from the extensive wine list or try a handcrafted, specialty cocktail. Bashi: Head to bashi for a large selection of sake and wine, along with Asian-influenced cocktails. Solviva: solviva continues its wellness theme with a selection of organic, biodynamic and sustainable libations from wineries and breweries.

PALOS VERDES PENINSULA SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST
EXPLORE The Palos Verdes Peninsula was once part of the Channel Islands archipelago. You can see its sister island, Catalina Island, just west of the resort. The resort includes 75 acres of natural landscape and there is plenty to explore there. However, if you want to go off the resort property, you can find ample places to explore nearby.
Point Vicente Lighthouse is walking distance from the resort along the Discovery Trail. The lighthouse began shining its beacon on the point in 1926. The lighthouse is 67 feet tall and was once part of the U.S. Coast Guard. It was manned until 1971, when the operations became automated. The lighthouse was added to the National Registry of Historic Sites in 1979. The tower and museum are open the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC.org) operates numerous trails on the peninsula. These are frequented by hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. There are organized monthly outdoor walks the second Saturday of each month. Wayfarers Chapel is a beautiful chapel with a breathtaking setting. The natural sanctuary sits on the Pacific Coast, and the chapel is a stone and glass structure designed by Lloyd Wright, son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. You can visit the chapel, which was built between 1949 and 1951, Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

LO O K I N G F O R AN ARIZONA VAC AT I O N H O M E ? SEDONA, PRESCOTT AND FLAGSTAFF BECKON VALLEY RESIDENTS WHO WANT THEIR OWN VACATION RETREAT
ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM
F L AG S TA F F & M U N D S PA R K Living in North Peoria puts you within a two-hour drive of various climates, from desert to mountains. One of the most popular weekend escapes is to Flagstaff and Munds Park, located 20 miles south of Flagstaff. In both destinations, it is often 25 degrees cooler in the summer, and there’s usually snow in the winter. Jessica Shrake, Associate Broker with ValleyLUX at Libertas Real Estate (ValleyLUX.com) explains that both destinations are wildly popular weekend escapes. “The allure of a second home that you can get to in less than two hours—and be in a totally different climate—has fueled that demand. Munds Park draws a big weekend crowd heading to a cabin or taking the RV up.” Both destinations are ideal for hiking, off-road vehicles, golfing and dining. A second home in either destination lets you experience small-town living whenever you want.

SEDONA
Sedona, surrounded by exquisite red rocks, is a bit of a magical location. There are mild, yearround temperatures with summers generally 10 to 20 degrees cooler than in the Valley. It is a favorite destination for hikers and bicyclists, who can meander slowly through the red sandstone formations. Summer days playing in Oak Creek Canyon and nights stargazing (Sedona is an International Dark Sky Community) lend to that magical quality. Combining the outdoor areas with great shopping and dining, it’s easy to see why Sedona is an ideal vacation home choice.

P R E S C OT T There has been tremendous growth in Prescott. The historic town—once Arizona’s capital—is west of I-17, about 90 minutes north of Peoria. While some locals lament the less-populated Prescott of past decades, it beckons those looking for a slower-paced life. Realtor Stacy Dragos of Century 21 Toma Partners (StacyDragos.com) loves Prescott and sees it as her home away from home. “The climate, landscape, wildlife, endless hiking/ mountain biking/equestrian trails, golf, lakes and small-town charm make Prescott easy to fall in love with,” says Dragos. She loves the historic beauty of the Mt. Vernon and Park Avenue districts in Prescott but also recommends Talking Rock Ranch and High Valley Ranch. Talking Rock Ranch is a luxury golf community with year-round outdoor activities. High Valley Ranch is a smaller luxury community of custom rustic estates bordering the Prescott National Forest. “You find yourself in a wilderness preserve where wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and javelina roam,” explains Dragos. “And yet, you are only a 3-mile drive to historic Courthouse Square.”

Olive Mill AN EAST VALLEY FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS IS WORTH THE DRIVE
The Phoenix Southeast Valley has a rich history of family farms. Many of those farms now offer agritourism attractions and culinary bounty for locals and visitors alike. A local favorite that is worth the drive from the West Valley is Queen Creek Olive Mill. Queen Creek Olive Mill (QueenCreekOliveMill.com) is Arizona’s only family-owned and operated working olive mill and farm. Be sure to book a tour in advance. This offers great insight into the Rea family that owns QCOM and the process for making olive oil. The Olive Oil 101 class is $7 per person. After a tour and complimentary oil tasting, you can shop in the market for olive oils and balsamic vinegars. There are so many incredible flavors, from lemon and vanilla bean olive oil to fig and chocolate balsamic.
OLIVESPA AT QCOM Owner Brenda Rea is a mom of five kids and finding quality skin products was an issue. So, she created the Olivespa skincare products. These are all-natural skincare products made from the family olives.
DINING AT QCOM The Rae family wanted to honor their Tuscan roots, so they opened de Piero as a Tuscan-inspired eatery. You can find tasty gourmet sandwiches, charcuterie trays, soups and flatbreads. Pick up a fresh-roasted espresso from Superstition Coffee and take your gourmet treats outdoors to enjoy them on picnic tables in the olive grove. CONTINUED >

MORE ARIZONA FINDS AT QCOM The market at QCOM likes to help out other Arizona farmers and makers, so you can find a variety of local Arizona food items. You can find fresh pasta and sauces to take home for dinner. Fill up on Glendalebased Cerreta Candy. Pick up local Arizona honey, hot sauces and salsa. You can also find a wide selection of Arizona wines.
RAE FAMILY OLIVE OIL CUPCAKES (PICTURED) If you find yourself wondering how you might use lemon olive oil or chocolate balsamic vinegar, QCOM offers several pages of recipes online. There is a great pesto recipe, but this one for olive oil cupcakes is a customer favorite created by the owner.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
3 eggs 1 cup Olive Oil (Vanilla Bean, Lemon, Orange or Lime) 1 TBLS lemon juice 1 1/4 cups milk 2 cups sugar 1 tsp salt 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda
FROSTING • • • • •
1/2 cup butter (room temperature) 4 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup heavy cream Optional: a few drops of food coloring
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 325F. Whisk together the eggs, olive oil, lemon juice and milk. 2. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, salt, flour, baking powder and baking soda with a whisk. 3. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. 4. Pour into cupcake cups and bake 25 to 30 minutes, when a toothpick comes out clean. 5. Beat the frosting ingredients together in a mixer until smooth and creamy and spread on cooled cupcakes.
FRESH FOODIE TRAIL It’s definitely worth the drive east to check out Queen Creek Olive Mill at 25062 S. Meridian Road in Queen Creek. It is part of the Fresh Foodie Trail (VisitMesa.com/fresh-foodie) that runs through Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek.

resort retreat NORTH PEORIA RESIDENT STEFFANIE BARNOLI BRINGS A RESORT FEEL TO HER OWN HOME
Ross and Steffanie Barnoli enjoy being at home, so having a relaxing outdoor space was essential. Steffanie, designer at Designer Direct Interiors, worked with contractor Mike Oliver to ensure that every room has a door to the outside. With the assistance of Innovative Outdoor Concepts (Facebook.com/ IOCLandscape) and Mitschele’s Landscape Design (MitschelesLandscape. com), they created a resort feel. (See the landscapes feature in our March 2022 issue for more photos of the Barnoli home.) An example of that resort feel is how the fireplace off the dining room elevates every dining experience. The fountain garden space is one of Steffanie’s favorites. “My office opens to this area. The sound of the water is relaxing, while the flowers and pea gravel surrounding the space transports you to another country.”
