LIFESTYLE LETTER

March — Home & Design Home. A place of retreat, rest and love….a place where you can let your guard down and just be in the surroundings YOU create for yourself and your family. Taking time to get away from the daily grind is so much more enjoyable when you love where you live. Our March “Home and Design” issue focuses on Outdoor Spaces and is meant to inspire you to create a special home, yard, or corner that you love. Whether you are learning the art of Xeriscaping to create a sustainable landscape or overhauling your yard altogether, you will find beautiful ideas this month. Are you looking to adventure out into the natural surroundings at Scorpion Bay? Or spend time visiting our area's incredible attractions like the Wildlife World Zoo Aquarium or Safari Park? Or, perhaps last month’s “Local Love” issue cinched that Valentine you’ve had your eye on. If so, maybe it’s time for a hot air balloon ride with Rainbow Ryders or a Segway Tour at Phoenix Raceway! While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this issue, we take a peek around the outdoor spaces of some of North Peoria’s most beautiful residences that I hope will leave you inspired. We also offer some new advertisers to help you with all sorts of improvements and upgrades to your spaces. From our home to yours, I wish you love, peace and happiness.

Designing the Great Outdoors Tips and Trends for Creating Your Ideal Outdoor Living Space ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE ANDERT—PICTURE LADY PHOTOGRAPHY LLC Here in Arizona, where sunshine abounds and temperatures are moderate the bulk of the year, creating an outdoor living space is paramount. Backyard renovations top the list when it comes to home improvement projects. In fact, according to a recent Houzz & Home report, outdoor renovations increased 57 percent, up even from 2020, and the trend continues. We reached out to area experts to find out what the hottest trends are for designing an outdoor living space that will please the entire family and offer great space for entertaining. Eric Noyes, owner of Arizona's Greenest Grass Turf Co. (AZGreenestGrass.com) suggested the first step is determining how you want to use your outdoor space. There are several things to consider when you think about designing a great outdoor space here in Arizona.

16

O UTD OOR LIV IN G | HOM E + DE S I GN

LOW-MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPING Even though many homeowners prefer to have someone else do their landscaping maintenance, trend forecasters at the Freedonia Group see more homeowners investing in low-maintenance options. (See more about xeriscaping using drought-tolerant plants on page 30.) One way of creating a low-maintenance yard with maximum impact is installing turf. Artificial grass comes in varying degrees of quality and requires very little maintenance. “Caring for turf is pretty easy,” said Noyes. “You just need to use a blower or rake to remove any debris and wash it down once per month with a hose to get rid of any dust."

WATER FEATURES

CREATING PLAY SPACES

Adding water features to an outdoor area can transform a yard into an oasis. Waterfalls, stream beds, bubbler rocks and other water features usually require professional installation. They can boost the aesthetic and add to the atmospheric qualities of outdoor space with tranquil sound. For those who want to include a water feature in a low-maintenance yard, a recirculating water feature is an attractive option. Another great advantage here in Arizona is that colorful birds, hummingbirds and even honey bees love water features.

Every family plays in different ways, and your outdoor spaces can capture what matters most for you. Pools are a major part of Arizona life, so choose one that best fits your family's needs. Consider a zero-entry pool if you have young children. If diving is your thing, there are now options that let you put your diving board flush with the pool deck. But play is about more than pools. Add a playhouse for the kids. Install a putting green for the adults. In-ground trampolines let the kids have fun without the added worry of a tumble off the side. Ball courts, games areas...let your imagination create fun outdoor spaces.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS AND DINING SPACES

Jacinthe Soloman of Brass & Ivy Interiors, uses her outdoor space to extend the living area.

18

O UTD OOR LIV IN G | HOM E + DE S I GN

Outdoor kitchen equipment has also seen an increase in sales during the past year. Built-in grills, stoves, ovens, sinks, refrigeration units and outdoor storage that resemble kitchen cabinets have become increasingly popular. Look for furniture designed for the outdoors to withstand our intense Arizona sun. Downeast Home (DowneastHome.com) in North Peoria offers some great options with durable fabrics and materials such as long-lasting teak. An outdoor kitchen can transform how you use your space and how much time you spend there. To extend the usefulness of your outdoor kitchen and dining room, consider adding ceiling fans, misters and heaters. Jacinthe Soloman, the co-owner of Brass & Ivy Interiors (BrassandIvyInteriors. com), recently designed her dream outdoor space working with Dave Hollof, owner of Elements of Nature, LLC. One of the major factors for the Solomans was bringing the outdoors inside. An intimate inner courtyard is one example of how they accomplish that. The dining room opens to the inner courtyard, which uses pavers and turf in the center, with chairs grouped around an outdoor fireplace. Tucked under the awning, and open to the dining room, is a massive dining table. "When family comes over, we can open the doors and have meals that extend inside and out," says Soloman.

COMFORTABLE SEATING AREAS Sitting outdoors around a fire pit on a starry night or lounging poolside in a chaise is what brings resort living home. Think about how to embrace your surroundings. Set up a small table and chairs where you can enjoy a quiet cup of coffee each morning. While the outdoor dining might be close to the kitchen, you can add a small seating area for intimate gatherings in a more out-of-the-way area. Think about adding shading that can shelter you from the sun but still let you enjoy beautiful views. Umbrellas and shades offer temporary shelter that you can raise or lower, while covered patios and pergolas are more permanent fixtures. A fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. Refinishing a pool or adding travertine tile to an existing area can transform a space entirely. Consider adding colorful outdoor pillows, long curtains around patios, pops of color from accent chairs and outdoor rugs. A few flameless candles on a remote timer with some overhead lights can instantly create a warm, inviting space. “If the homeowner has existing landscaping, we can usually work with that," explains Noyes. "We can redistribute rock, transplant plants, reuse and move pavers or elevate a planter to add depth.” According to Noyes, other common trends are paver areas for gazebos and pergolas, as well as for walkways, patios and even driveways. "We start by asking homeowners how they want to utilize their outdoor space rather than start with design elements. We fit the design around their lifestyle."

When people hear the words xeriscape, they often think of rock, cacti, and flat, perhaps even boring landscaping. Xeriscaping, however, can be just the opposite of boring. When you plan and execute a xeriscape landscape using drought-tolerant plants and decorative touches, you can create a beautiful desert oasis that embraces this beautiful Southwest region we all call home.

PRINCIPLES OF XERISCAPING If you work with an expert or examine a few basic principles, xeriscaping can not only save you money but also enhance your outdoor spaces.

1. GOOD PLANNING & DESIGN You have to know what suits your needs and budget. This will include the cost of materials, examining your preferences for everything from style to color. Try to find ways to add color to your design. This can include not only choosing plants that flower at different times of the year but also adding garden artwork, colorful fabrics and pillows, or paint and decorative trellises.

2. CHOOSE LOW WATER-USE PLANTS The key component of xeriscaping is the use of drought-resistant plants that take less water than traditional plants. There are literally hundreds of desert-adapted plants and many have beautiful flowers, depending on the season. Mulch is important to reduce water evaporation and to cool the soil in our hot summers. Organic mulch, such as wood chips, is the best, but rocks can also be useful and decorative in certain areas. Eric Noyes, the owner of Arizona’s Greenest Grass Turf Company, specializes in low-water outdoor living spaces. Noyes emphasizes that xeriscaping is so much more than rock, although that is a part of it. He loves to use a variety

of low-water plants and trees and suggests succulents, yucca, agave, creosote, Sugar Bush, Bird of Paradise and Mexican Honeysuckle. Homeowners who want trees can consider Chinese Pistache, Palo Verde, Desert Willow and Mesquite.

3. ADD APPROPRIATE TURF AREAS Noyes recommends artificial turf instead of grass, especially for homeowners with pets and/or children. “Artificial turf is a major component if you want green grass without the water or maintenance. Real grass uses extensive water to keep it green. And remember, that’s only for eight months out of the year in Arizona, because it will die off and require reseeding.” Noyes reminds homeowners that Arizona has committed to cutting water usage because of the extended drought. In our desert environment, on a hot summer day, the average lawn needs 125 gallons of water per 1,000 square feet. The EPA estimates that nearly one-third of residential water use is for landscape irrigation. Noyes does recommend that homeowners shop around. “The turf we use is American-made, certified lead-free and toxin-free.”

4. EFFICIENT IRRIGATION Even when you plant drought-resistant plants, everything needs some water. All new plants need a bit more water until established. It also helps to group those with similar water needs and to use separate watering zones in the irrigation system. According to Noyes, “The key thing for xeriscaping is to design it for the most efficient water usage. That includes using the right size drippers and timers that are set up right so the plants get enough water but are not overwatered.”

5. MAINTENANCE Xeriscape landscapes require less maintenance than traditional landscapes. Noyes points out there are many savings for those who choose this route. “Xeriscaping is eco-friendly (little to no water usage), saves money on water, and is very low maintenance, so you save time and money cutting and edging grass.”

Spring Break

Bucket List

1.

Check Out Four Uniquely Arizona Outings in March Locals live for spring in Arizona. The days bring warm sunshine and moderate temps and the nights are cool with endless starry skies. Hiking trails fill up, folks ditch the office for spring training games and good luck getting a tee time! People from across the Midwest and East Coast envy the beautiful weather and flock to the sunshine and outdoor activities. So while the kids are on break and you’re entertaining refugees from colder climates, keep these activities top of mind.

Scorpion Bay at Lake Pleasant Soak up the sun at Lake Pleasant. Take a walk along the dock or rent a kayak, pontoon, sport boat or water toys. No matter the experience level, Scorpion Bay has something for everyone. After a day on the water, relax and enjoy a meal at Scorpion Bay Grill and take in the magnificent views. For something a little longer term, rent a floating cabin and live the lake life.

Segway at Phoenix

Wildlife World Zoo Aquarium & Safari Park is popular for its up-close and personal animal experiences. You can feed giraffes and penguins, pet stingrays and see baby animals. The zoo also boasts an assortment of rides, including a family roller coaster, Log Flume, Australian Boat Ride, Safari Train, Skyride and Zip Line. The rides and feedings do have a nominal charge but they enhance the overall experience and are what sets this zoo apart from others.

A hot air balloon ride is the ultimate bucket list experience! Rainbow Ryders offers breathtaking community or private sunrise and sunset flights. Enjoy a 45- to 60-minute voyage through the clouds and experience breathtaking panoramic views of the sunrise or sunset over Deer Valley, Lake Pleasant and the Sonoran Desert. Toast to the beauty of the desert with a prickly pear mimosa to complete the experience. Sunrise flights are year-round, but sunset flights are only available through the end of March.

The excitement ramps up during the month of March at Phoenix Raceway. NASCAR Weekend runs March 11-13 and attracts the masses for three days of high octane fun. And did you know you can book a Segway tour hosted by iLean Ride Co.? Take a lap around the one-mile racing oval on a Segway and see the track from the perspective of NASCAR’s race officials during a behind-the-scenes tour. Limousine golf carts are available for participants who prefer to stay on four wheels.
