February — Local Love

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Julie LaCroix | julie.lacroix@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fills us up. One of my favorite hands-on hobbies is restoring furniture. I was fortunate to have a formal apprenticeship in college where I learned the restoration process for fine 19th-century French furniture. Restoring furniture wasn't just about wiping it clean. It was really about learning how people had used these pieces, how they were built, what tools were used to make them, what we could do to repair them, and then all about the beautiful woods, gilt, brass, and marble. It was a holistic approach to form and function and these design principles have followed all of my creative pursuits ever since. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Pick up something new or resurrect a hobby from the past to find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

LOCAL ART HELPS CREATE A WELCOMING COMMUNITY

LocalArt ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Public art helps to convey a sense of community. It serves as a point of pride. As you drive throughout our community, stop to check out local art. And have you seen those colorful utility boxes? We love looking for the little touches in unexpected places— walls, trailheads, bus stops, bridges. Our public art is just one more reason we can all be proud to call this home. 1. SUNRISE MOUNTAIN LIBRARY, designed by Richard Kennedy Architects, juxtaposes straight concrete walls with a whimsical wave on the roof. Visit the library at 21109 N. 98th Ave. 2. TOTEM: THE PLANT PRINCESS by Joan Waters welcomes visitors to Sunrise Mountain Library. The welded steel sculpture casts shadows as the day progresses. CONTINUED >

MIRAGE MURAL at New River Trailhead at Westbrook Village (83rd Ave at Village Pkwy) was a 2017 collaboration by local high school students. It shows the agricultural roots of the community. 5. Not only does this steel and alloy metal sculpture look pretty—it is a kinetic and sound sculpture, moving and chiming with the wind. 9. SUNSET FLIGHT by Cecilia Lueza. The giant hummingbird in Camino á Lago Park (behind Sunrise Mountain Library) is actually a sundial. The base is made of 148,000 glass mosaic tiles depicting a desert landscape at sunset. It is based on the blooms and leaves of several indigenous desert plants. 11. Look for the UTILITY BOX ART WRAPS around town. In October 2021, Peoria received WESTMARC’s West Valley Quality of Life Enhancement in Community award for this and the Happy Valley Bridge mosaics project. This wrap is on Deer Valley Road at 95th Avenue. 12. PUPPY LOVE is a life-sized sculpture by Texas artist Marianne Caroselli. Jacinthe Soloman LOCAL DESIGNER STRIVES TO MAKE HOMEOWNERS LOVE THEIR HOMES

ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE ANDERT—PICTURE LADY PHOTOGRAPHY LLC

Jacinthe Soloman grew up in New Jersey, but Arizona is home. And helping others create that sense of home in Arizona is more than a passion. In fact, Soloman and her business partner Sylvia Mansour developed their passion for design into a business—Brass & Ivy Interiors (BrassAndIvyInteriors.com). We recently chatted with Soloman at her own home in North Peoria to get some of her tips for making your space one you can love and call home.

ABOUT THE SOLOMANS Soloman first discovered Arizona when she attended college at ASU. After graduating as a dietician, she returned to New York for an internship. While there, Soloman met her future husband, Dr. Nehad Soloman, who was

18

completing his medical degree at SUNY StonyBrook. After they married and he finished his residency in New York, Soloman wanted to return to Arizona. “I finally sat him down and told him I had to move back to Arizona,” Soloman recounts. That was in 2000, and the couple never looked back. They have three children, ranging in age from 10 to 19. They lived in the same home for 15 years, but Soloman wanted to design a new home. They started looking at places to build and fell in love with a spot in West Wing. Construction began in October 2019. Creating a space they all loved was important, especially since they were leaving the only home the kids had ever known. Soloman said all of them were apprehensive about the move. “I told them that I didn’t want them to be afraid of change.

Change can be very good. Since we’ve moved, all three of them have told me they’re so glad we did.”

CREATING OPEN & INVITING SPACES Soloman works with clients to find out how they use their homes. She asks them how they move in the spaces. She discusses their lifestyles. She also considers the outdoor space and if that should play a role in the interior design. All of that was equally important for the Soloman family. “We wanted an open concept. We came up with this great room leading into the kitchen. I designed the breakfast nook first,” Soloman explains. “We built the room around that. I wanted to bring that out and capture the views. I knew I wanted an arched window.” CONTINUED >

CREATING UNIQUE SPACES “I love to incorporate a window seat anywhere I can,” Soloman explains. “It brings the family together. It’s cozy. And it also offers storage with either cabinets or drawers underneath.” Soloman loves adding pillows. She suggests choosing a variety of shapes and textures to add comfort as well as interest. Lighting is another aspect where little touches can make all the difference. “I look at lighting as jewelry,” Soloman says as she points to the crystal drop lights over her kitchen island. “In my kitchen, I wanted something elegant and fancy. You choose lights by looking at the homeowner’s personality along with the size and the backdrop of the room.”

CREATING CUSTOM TOUCHES Soloman points out some of the unique features she incorporated in her home, including the dining room ceilings. “We were in Venice, and I looked up and saw those growing vaulted ceilings. I was taking pictures of ceilings everywhere I went. I knew we had to incorporate those in our home.” She explains that finding those little touches and adding them to a client’s home is what takes a residence from house to home. Soloman moves to her nearby laundry room that also serves as an office, craft room and a space for the pets to hang out. She created a custom split barn door to corral the dog if necessary, but not lock him away. She has little niches for the water and food that keep it accessible for the pets but out of people’s way. She also added a pass-through door into the master closet so there is no need to traipse through the house with laundry.

22

EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E + DE S I GN

ADDING UNIQUE PERSONALITY Soloman says it’s easy to incorporate personal touches in any home, even those that might not fit the overall design scheme. She points to a Spanish staircase tucked away off a back hallway. It is complete with decorative tiles and wroughtiron handrails. “I wanted a Spanish staircase,” she laughs, “but my husband wasn’t a fan.” She was able to add her own touch without it being a major part of the home design. It leads to a single upstairs game room and outdoor balcony. Another place where it was easy to incorporate all of the home’s residents was in what she calls

the “teen room.” Situated off the main living space, it is a more casual gathering area. “It’s nice and cozy and fun,” she explains. “We have a theater room off the side because the kids end up there with their friends.” Each child has a room and full bath leading off the teen room, which they decorated themselves. When people have an idea of what they want, but can’t crystallize what to do with a space, Brass & Ivy Interiors helps them refine the vision. Often the key to bringing that vision to life is incorporating elements the homeowner never even considered. Soloman waves her arms in almost-completed custom home. “I love a challenge.”

Create a Sweet Treat Table Treat Your Little Valentines on February 14 ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES @UNCOMMONJANE

Surprise your children this Valentine’s Day with a sweet treat table. Keep it simple with some cupcakes, plain cookies, or candies for them to decorate. You can bake your own treats or pick up cupcakes and cookies—without frosting—at the local store. Also think about adding little chocolates, Oreos, or even giant marshmallows to decorate. Be sure to set everything at kid-level, where kids can gather, easily reach everything, and be creative without worrying about making a mess. A great tip is to place all the decorations on a tray and separate items

in small bowls. Things you might want to include for decorations include: • Pink and red sprinkles • Pink or red sugar • Pink and red icing • Chocolate hearts • Candy hearts Be creative and encourage your kids and their friends to take part in a fun Valentine’s Day activity. Be sure to photograph your little Valentines’ sweet treats and share them with us on Instagram at @northpeorialifestyle.

SUSIE ANN & JA S O N L E E LEE-BONES FINE MEATS Jason and Susie Ann were high school sweethearts, together for 32 years. After school, Jason joined the USAF (both of their fathers are retired military) and ended up getting stationed at Luke Air Force Base. That was 22 years ago. Today, the couple owns and operates Lee-Bones Fine Meats (LeeBonesFineMeats.com). “Our customers come to our butcher shop because they want quality, natural meat,” explains Susie Ann. “You can taste the difference.” What is the secret to their success? “Honestly, Jason and I have been together long enough to know that we should NOT work together in the same space for too long,” laughs Susie Ann. “We have balanced our time in such a way that I keep up with our business end and Jason runs the operations.” CONTINUED >

Joey and Tanya Lucidi have been married for almost 16 years and have called Peoria home since 2008. The couple has four girls—Isabella, Gianna, Olivia and Amelia—ranging in ages from 4 to 14. Joey owns Westside Concepts (WestsideConcepts.US), which operates three Haymaker restaurants (North Peoria, Goodyear, and Thunderbird), Social on 83rd, NW Coffee, Cantina Gueros in North Peoria and Goodyear, and Fire House Event Center. “Opening our first restaurant was tough,” Joey recounts. “We bootstrapped it with no bank loans or backup plans. We were down to $107 in our bank account the night we opened the restaurant. With three kids at home, going through that was tough. We had no option to fail. We had to succeed.” Today, Westside Concepts employs more than 350. “Our goal is to bring quality restaurant concepts to the West Valley. Giving locals quality options helps our communities grow and become stronger. We are so blessed to be where we are and share our success with our team.”

AU D R A & ERIC GILBERT FOH PRODUCTIONS, ROADCASE.COM AND DELEX REALTY Audra and Eric, married for 14 years now, have been West Valley residents since before they met (their parents also call Peoria home) and lived and worked in North Peoria for 13 years. They make it a priority to give back to the community. Eric owns FOH Productions (FOHProductions. net), an event planning company and Roadcase.com, where he designs, builds and manufactures custom road cases to transport equipment for tours, events, movie productions and more. Audra is a top-producing realtor for Delex Realty (AudraGilbert.com). “I love bringing people together and helping them explore the West Valley.” “The most important thing for us is to support each other in the hard times just as much as the happy times,” says Audra. “Because both of us are business owners, there’s no guaranteed paycheck and we both have to work hard to achieve our goals.”

A R T I S T, C O OL G I R L E A R R I NG S During the COVID19 lockdown, Hailea became obsessed with watching people create jewelry on YouTube. She received an earring-making kit for her birthday and the creativity flowed. Hailea posted her creations on social media and quickly gained a following. Fast forward two years and the 21-year-old now has a successful business selling her one-of-a-kind pieces on Instagram. Hailea uses polymer clay and resin to create earrings and no two pieces are alike. She’d like to expand her line to include sterling silver rings and necklaces.

One of the most romantic spots anywhere is the Talavera patio at dusk—while watching the sunset over the Valley and enjoying a Spanish-inspired meal from Executive Chef Kazmer. You’ll be able to pair the exceptional flavors with craft cocktails or fine wines. Sedona’s Red Rocks beckon. A stay at Amara Resort and Spa puts you on the banks of Oak Creek Canyon. While you’re only steps from Uptown Sedona, you will forget that as you sit creek-side. Cozy up to the fire pit in the evenings, sip a cocktail from SaltRock and watch the world glow as the sun goes down. Don’t forget a couples’ massage at Amara Spa.

Arizona’s Rim Country is about two hours north of Peoria, but feels as if it’s a world away. Sneak away to one of the Tiny Cottages at The Strawberry Inn. These pet-friendly cottages are an ideal base for a romantic escape. Hiking is close by, grab dinner and explore the little shops in nearby Pine, and cozy up with a bottle of wine to watch the stars.
