The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the light, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that best reflects that experience. My favorite thing about the North Peoria area is the unique ways each neighborhood celebrates and decorates. Whether you live in West Wing, Stetson Hills, Arrowhead Lakes, The Meadows, Blackstone, or anywhere else we distribute this magazine, your neighborhood has a unique holiday vibe and characteristic. In my neighborhood, many of us string lights from a point on the rooftop, cascading them down in a bright tree formation. It’s a simple yet bold statement that a yard doesn’t have to be big to express the holiday spirit. What are some of the traditions forming in your community? This month, we wanted to highlight the season's magic and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We wanted to share what our area offers this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

It's always fun to track decorating trends. Each year, the holiday season from November through New Year's brings fun new trends as homeowners look for creative and inspirational ways to decorate. We tracked down a few top decorating trends for 2022 and searched for the hot spots in the West Valley where you can pick up some great items for decorating your home this holiday season.

WE SEE SEVERAL MAJOR TRENDS THIS SEASON: • Neutrals and naturals • Items collected in nature • Nostalgic Christmas items • Metallics featuring gold or rose gold • Bright, traditional Christmas colors • Non-traditional colorful accents We’ll break these down for you and help you achieve these trending looks for your holiday while ensuring your home feels comfortable and embraces your own unique traditions.

NEUTRALS & NATURALS ABOUND One of the biggest trends for this holiday season is the use of natural colors. Imagine walking in the woods on a snowy Christmas morning. To decorate with this theme, you can add these elements: • Flocked trees that appear snow-laden • Pinecones and natural foliage • Greenery • Rustic ornaments • White and pale gold elements • White candles and lanterns This is also a great way to incorporate items collected in nature. Pick up a few pinecones under the trees if you’re in Flagstaff before the holidays. Add these to a white dish and tuck in some greenery. Alternatively, craft stores sell pinecones and greenery. A NOSTALGIC CHRISTMAS The holidays are a time for recreating special memories. One way to get that feeling is to incorporate those nostalgic touches. Signatures Invitations & Gifts in Arrowhead has several Christmas trees filled with nostalgic ornaments. You might find an old Ford pickup or a Santa ornament reminiscent of the early 1900s. Items with black and white checks are also popular and nostalgic. You can find plenty of fun, nostalgic items. LOTS OF COLOR! A big trend this holiday season is to embrace color. While this is the opposite of the neutrals and naturals, it is definitely popular. Metallics bring some fun sparkle to the 2022 holiday season. Especially gold. You can bring in colorful ornaments, decorative accents in the room, shiny ribbons and pillows. An unusual trend is the use of non-traditional colors such as pink, purple, turquoise or bright green. Fun colors signify the joviality of the season, so don’t hesitate to embrace this fun new trend.

Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Using salt dough is an old tradition, but one that has made a comeback recently. And for a good reason—it requires only three ingredients, but the festive end product will last for years. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current-day trends. That is precisely what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season and start a new tradition with your family and friends.

SALT DOUGH RECIPE *Makes about 12 ornaments

SUPPLIES NEEDED • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet • Parchment Paper • Lettered Stamps • Acrylic Sealer • Bakers Twine

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup All Purpose White Flour • ½ cup Table Salt • ½ cup Water (give or take) • 4 oz White Acrylic Paint

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix flour and salt. 2. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. 3. Remove the dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, and add more water if too dry. 4. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½- to ¼-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. 5. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. 6. Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 7. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. 8. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. 9. Once dried thoroughly, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang them from your tree or add them to your gift boxes as gift tags. Park City, a former silver mining boom town, is 32 miles southeast of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Nestled in Utah’s Wasatch Range, Park City is home to two world-class ski resorts—Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain.

PARK CITY Park City, incorporated in 1884, has a population of about 8,400. It has a laid-back mountain town atmosphere but with gourmet dining and shopping at your fingertips. And while it has many outdoor activities year-round, winter brings unparalleled snow conditions for fun, on and off the slopes. It was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. In addition to skiing, there’s snowshoeing, snowmobiling, horse-drawn sleigh rides and many other activities to enjoy the winter wonderland. And if you’re a thrill seeker, you can ride a bobsled down the 2002 Olympic track at the Utah Olympic Park. But the town’s beating heart is Historic Main Street, a lively gathering place. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Main Street is especially enchanting in winter when snow blankets the Victorian buildings, which house restaurants, bars, boutiques, art galleries and other establishments. You can take a gin-making class at Alpine Distilling and bring home your bottled gin. Main Street is also the hub for year-round festivals and events. Most notable is the annual Sundance Film Festival in January. If you’re in town over the holidays, check out the annual Snow Globe Stroll featuring nine life-sized snow globes along Historic Main Street, on display through Jan. 4, 2023. Not surprisingly, Main Street is also popular for après-ski gatherings.

APRÈS-SKI The Spur Bar and Grill: Enjoy wings, burgers and brick oven pizza along with wine, beer and cocktails. Nightly live music makes this a fun hangout. No Name Saloon: Choose from a wide selection of buffalo burgers, hoof-less burgers (turkey or veggie), sandwiches and beer. Old Town Cellars: Relax at the private-label winery with a glass or two of wine. Alpine Distilling: Savor creative gin and whiskey cocktails. High West Distillery: Head straight from the slopes to this ski-in/ski-out distillery.

NON-SKI ACTIVITIES Experience Park City’s natural winter playground with exhilarating activities available through adventure companies. Summit Meadows Adventures: Enjoy scenic views of the Wasatch Mountains via guided snowmobile tours on groomed trails. All Seasons Adventures: Explore the backcountry on snowshoes or cross-country skis or go on a dogsledding adventure.

DEER VALLEY RESORT With over 2,000 acres of skiable terrain across six mountain peaks, the upscale Deer Valley Resort (DeerValley.com) is a skier’s paradise. It’s a ski-only resort that pampers guests with first-class service from top to bottom. Ski valets at the base loading zone help unload gear and navigate you to where you want to go. Ski lodges provide free overnight ski storage and complimentary shuttles between accommodations and the town, about a mile away. That leaves more time to explore the mountain with 21 chairlifts, 103 ski runs and six bowls. If you’re new to the resort, and an intermediate or expert skier, consider joining one of the four free guided mountain tours. Love tree skiing? Deer Valley has over 900 acres of glade skiing through aspen groves—and what a way to experience Utah’s signature powder. Locals favor Ontario Bowl, Sunset Glade and Triangle Trees. Designated kids’ adventure zones have fun names like Quincy’s Cabin (an actual cabin with a stuffed animal inside), Bucky’s Backyard and Ruby’s Roost. No doubt by now, you’re ready for a break—for food and a drink, that is. Situated atop Flagstaff Mountain, Cushing’s Cabin is a popular stop for hot chocolate and Deer Valley’s signature turkey chili. Or kick back in one of the day lodges—Snow Park, Silver Lake or Empire Canyon.

APRÈS SKI AND DINING IN DEER VALLEY Stein Eriksen Lodge’s Champions Club: This family-friendly spot has a bar and a large entertainment center. Montage Deer Valley Veuve Yurt: Sip French bubbles that pair perfectly with caviar, charcuterie, smoked fish and other gourmet bites. Fireside Dining: Relax over a cozy, four-course dinner. For extra fun, ride in a horse-drawn sleigh to the restaurant. Troll Hallen: Satisfy hunger with the signature Stein’s Burger and garlic cheese fries.

DEER VALLEY LODGING Deer Valley Resort has a variety of accommodations in Snow Park, Silver Lake and Empire Pass. Ski-in/skiout properties include the 5-star Stein Eriksen Lodge (SteinLodge.com), part of the Luxury Stein Collection. The elegant mid-mountain lodge features luxury suites, a full-service spa and onsite restaurants.

PARK CITY MOUNTAIN With more than 7,300 acres of terrain for skiing and snowboarding, 330 trails, 42 lifts and six terrain parks, Park City Mountain (ParkCityMountain.com) is the largest ski resort in the US. There are two main base lodges— Park City Mountain Village and Canyons Village. Both base areas have dedicated learning areas. You can also access Park City Mountain via the iconic Town Lift on Historic Main Street. The Quicksilver Gondola connects Park City Mountain to Canyons, making it possible to ski or ride the entire mountain in one day. But allow yourself at least two days to enjoy the vast terrain. In the pedestrian-friendly Canyons Village, hop on the Orange Bubble Express chairlift, which has heated seats and a plastic windshield.

PARK CITY MOUNTAIN DINING Mid Mountain Lodge & Public House: When it’s time to refuel, stop for a bite and local history at Mid Mountain Lodge, a renovated 19th-century ski-in/ski-out miner’s boarding house. Cafeteria-Style Dining On-Mountain: Refuel at one of the quick-service cafeteria-style restaurants, including Summit House, Miners Camp, Cloud Dine, Red Pine Lodge and Sun Lodge. Lookout Cabin: Fine dining restaurant with incredible mountain views. Serves lunch daily with a full-service bar and wine list.

APRÈS-SKI PARK CITY MOUNTAIN Head to Red Tail Grill in Canyons Village to unwind after a day on the slopes. You’ll find family-friendly dining and a hopping après-ski scene.

We recently sat down with Daniela Gheorghita, owner of dA Bookkeeping (dABookkeeping.com) in Peoria, to talk about critical bookkeeping tasks that small business owners need to handle during December.

NPL: BEFORE WE JUMP INTO BOOKKEEPING, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? Gheorghita: I am 27 years old. Originally from Romania, I moved to Peoria three years ago. After completing my bachelor's degree in economic studies and with more than seven years of experience in the financial industry, I decided to open dA Bookkeeping in 2021. It has been a blessing and an amazing adventure. I get to know incredible people. I particularly love working with small business owners.

NPL: NOW, LET'S TURN TO BOOKKEEPING. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TO TAKE STOCK OF THEIR BOOKS DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER? Gheorghita: Whether you work with a qualified bookkeeper or you are organizing the books by yourself, you need to make sure that you complete some essential tasks at the end of the year to ensure the accuracy of your final reports.

NPL: CAN YOU OUTLINE THOSE CRITICAL TASKS FOR US? Gheorghita: Here are the critical tasks that every small business owner needs to complete at the end of the year.

1. Update Inventory. If you are the type of business that sells products and carries inventory, make sure you are making a final end-of-year count to ensure the inventory registered in your accounting software perfectly matches the inventory you have on hand. 2. Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. It is extremely important to run an Aging AR and Aging AP report at least once a month to see exactly what your business needs to pay and receive. Since it is the end of the year, this task becomes one of the top three you must complete. Check all the unpaid invoices. Start sending reminders or reaching out to your customers directly to collect the payments for those past the due date. Check if you have any unpaid bills from your vendors and always try to make the payments on time to avoid penalties or late fees. 3. Record Expenses Made With Personal Accounts or Cash. Every dollar you spend for your business must be part of your books. If, by mistake, you paid for a business expense with your personal card or with cash, make sure you manually record these expenses. To have accurate reports, you must record everything you purchase for your business. It doesn’t matter if it was not an expensive item— add it to your books. At the end of the year, you will realize these inexpensive items can add up to significant amounts. 4. Categorize All Transactions Properly. Many types of bookkeeping software on the market today connect to your bank and import all the transactions. Once you import the transactions, ensure you categorize each transaction correctly. It is extremely important to organize expenses properly because this will impact your financial reports and the tax deductions that you might be able to benefit from when you do your taxes. 5. Reconcile Your Bank Accounts. In my opinion, categorizing and reconciling your transactions is a task that should

Gheorghita: Most business owners do their bookkeeping themselves initially, and they can handle it because the volume of work isn't that high. When the business starts to take off, they start postponing the books and fall behind. They find they need help to organize themselves. I encourage business owners to hire a bookkeeper before that happens, but we can help even when it gets to that point.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.)
