November—Thankful In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. True contentment comes from within and fulfilling who we were made to be. Personally, I am truly thankful for my North Peoria community. The precious group of friends and colleagues I have met along this North Peoria Lifestyle journey have touched my heart in a way that is beyond measure. I never realized all the work I have done to become “who I am” would pay off in this level of friendship and connectedness. My parents, old friends, new friends, city colleagues, committee members, work friends and local mentors – you all know who you are. These are the special people who make up my every single day and bring sunshine to my life. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. Be thankful for the residents and businesses who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community it is. ALTERNATIVES TO COOKING ON THANKSGIVING ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM It is okay to go out for Thanksgiving! We all have those images of a perfect Thanksgiving meal served around the table with the glistening turkey and everyone passing the gravy and the stuffing. However, with lives so busy and time so precious, going out on Thanksgiving might be the best way to give thanks and celebrate family and friends. Local restaurants now offer great Thanksgiving options designed to make you feel like part of the family. Another alternative is to pre-order a Thanksgiving meal, pick it up and serve it at home. You can still get family time without spending hours in the kitchen.

Some people even prefer to get away entirely for Thanksgiving, opting for a meal over a campfire or something unique to our community—maybe a dinner cruise on the lake. The most critical component of any Thanksgiving meal is friends and family. We encourage you to make this year more about giving and sharing and less about trying to create perfection. While there are a lot of alternatives out there, here are a few of our favorite ways to celebrate the season without spending hours in the kitchen. Or, you might want to call your favorite restaurant in advance and ask if they are serving something special this Thanksgiving.

THANKSGIVING AT LITCHFIELD’S Litchfield’s, the fine-dining restaurant at The Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, serves a 3-course prix fixe menu from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Christmas is in the air early at Tolmachoff Farms in Glendale. There’s something magical about the smell of fresh-cut pine trees. Enjoy plenty of that, plus some holiday cheer and a cup of hot chocolate with a visit to the 6-acre, family-owned farm. It opens mid-November through Christmas Eve. Donna Bartos and her husband Peter moved to North Peoria from Pennsylvania in 2007. Donna is the founder and CEO of BLOOM365 (BLOOM365.org), a 501 c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing the root causes of abuse and violence by promoting safe and healthy relationships among Gen Z youth.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My husband Peter owns State 48 Home Services based in Peoria, providing heating and cooling services. We have three children. Our son, P.J., is 18 and a freshman at ASU. We have two daughters. Gracie, 17, attends Glendale Prep and Hannah, 12, is a student at Arizona School for the Arts.

HOW DOES BLOOM365 ACHIEVE ITS MISSION OF PREVENTING THE CAUSES OF ABUSE? BLOOM365 (Bring Love On Others More, 365 Days a Year) has five cores to achieving our mission and vision: •

EDUCATE. We deliver and train others to facilitate our comprehensive BringLove365 healthy relationship education curriculum to students ages 11 to 24. The curriculum educates young people on the overt and subtle signs of controlling and abusive friendships and relationships while strengthening their communication, conflict resolution, self-esteem and peer-to-peer advocacy skills. This provides them the knowledge and tools to cultivate safe and healthy relationships free of abuse.

WHAT MADE YOU START BLOOM365? In 2006, I had a lightbulb moment: the abuse I experienced and witnessed as a child and the unhealthy and controlling relationship I experienced as a teen had a name and a root cause. It was time to find a better solution than just hotlines and shelters and accepting these problems as inevitable. So, I leveraged my know-how as a non-profit executive and set out on a mission to bridge the gaps between primary prevention (preventing abuse before it starts), secondary prevention (interrupting abuse to prevent continued harm) and tertiary

Most of us received "Stop Drop and Roll" education to prevent fire deaths as a child. According to the US Fire Administration, in 2021, fires resulted in 19 civilian deaths in Arizona. That same year, there were 94 domestic violence-related deaths in Arizona (ACESDV). SINTRA HOFFMAN OCCUPATION: PRESIDENT AND CEO, WESTMARC Hoffman, 57, is a New York native who put down roots in Peoria in 1999. She is the President and Chief Executive Officer of WESTMARC (WESTMARC.org), which promotes economic development, job growth and quality of life in the West Valley. Hoffman serves on community and education boards that focus on improving the quality of life and economic vitality in the West Valley. These include the ASU New College Dean’s Advisory Board, the Grand Canyon University Honors College Advisory Board, Phoenix Children’s Hospital West Valley Foundation Board and the White Tank Mountains Conservancy Board. Hoffman is passionate about the community she serves. “I’ve never experienced a more welcoming environment,” she says. “We are a great community that works together and supports one another.”

A JAY TA N I K E L L A OCCUPATION: GLOBAL DIRECTOR OF CUSTOMER SUCCESS, MICROSOFT Ajay Tanikella, 50, works for Microsoft but has a side hustle teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) to West Valley youth. Tanikella teaches robotics in the third through sixth grades at Copper Hills Center for the Arts in Peoria. He also mentors high school students in medical engineering and technology. Two years ago, Tanikella founded the NeoTech Foundation, a company with a vision that all children should have the opportunity to be a part of the “new technology revolution.” Tanikella is passionate about the importance of STEM programs. “I learned that Arizona is 48th in the nation in education, and I wanted to do something about it,” he explains. “While the state education board is working to improve the state standards, I can make an impact outside the classroom and influence students through STEM education.” In addition to his efforts in teaching STEM to children, Tanikella is also passionate about helping Arizona’s wildlife through advocacy and rescue.

S C OT T DUKE OCCUPATION: PRESIDENT, TRILOGY AT VISTANCIA VETERAN’S CLUB Scott Duke, 66, is a self-proclaimed “army brat” from a military family. “My dad was in the Army, older brother in the Navy and younger brother in the Coast Guard,” says Duke. “We have 102 years of military service between us.” Duke serves as President of the Trilogy at Vistancia Veteran’s Club, a 255-strong group of men and women who have honorably served in the military and reside in Trilogy at Vistancia (tvaveteransclub.weebly.com). The group is a service-oriented social club doing good in the community through such initiatives as Toys for Tots, food drives and “just rolling up our sleeves and helping where we’re needed.” Duke is inspired every day by the men and women in his club. “It warms your heart when you think about these 255 members, all who have honorably served their country, and now, even in retirement, still serve to help and volunteer to support military veterans less fortunate than themselves.”

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
