THE ROADS AHEAD One of the Valley’s next new freeway traffic interchanges is taking shape along Loop 303 in North Peoria. Crews have installed bridge girders at the future Jomax Parkway interchange as part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s project to widen Loop 303 north of Happy Valley Parkway. A total of 28 steel-reinforced concrete girders, each weighing approximately 180,000 pounds, were recently lifted into place to provide support for a bridge deck that will carry Loop 303 over Jomax Parkway when the entire $20.3 million project is completed in early 2022. The city of Peoria is managing a separate project to construct an all-new stretch of Jomax Parkway between Vistancia Boulevard and the Loop 303 interchange. ADOT’s Loop 303 widening project, which started in December, will improve capacity for current and future traffic needs by adding a third lane in each direction along the freeway between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways. Crews also are adding a new freeway bridge over the Beardsley Canal, north of the existing Happy Valley Parkway interchange.

ROBYN HALPERIN ROBYN’S NEST Robyn Halperin always had an obsession about home décor and decorating. She knew that for every woman, personal home style should reflect the woman’s personality, taste, and lifestyle. Although she had never run a business, she jumped in, opening first a florist and then launching Robyn’s Nest in 2017. She felt it was time to bring unique home décor, art, gifts, and furnishings to Phoenix’s Upper West Side. Halperin wanted women to have stylish and functional unique home décor, and to help them design a home they love that is functional and can be lived in, and something they can be proud of. She showcases affordable quality furniture and décor at Robyn’s Nest that you can’t find anywhere else in the area. “A home should reflect our individuality and provide unique pieces,” she explains. She says that is what brings her and her team the greatest joy. “We encourage our customers to show us photos or videos of a space they’re designing so we can offer additional support and help them find the finishing touches.” Halperin is also passionate about everything animals, especially elephants and abused dogs. MEET FOUR LOCAL WOMEN MAKING AN IMPACT—AND HELPING OTHER WOMEN
Inspiring Women
A M Y VA N D E R L I N D E N MOMENT OF TRUTH PT After more than 20 years as a physical therapist, Amy Vander Linden knows that women do a terrible job asking for what they need and prioritizing themselves. She also knows that “postpartum” is forever and that myofascial release can help women through pregnancy and postpartum. Myofascial release is about working with the body’s fascia—the web covering that weaves its way throughout the entire body. It is believed that issues with the fascia are in large part responsible for chronic pain. “I love working with women to show them their own power to heal, to feel their worth and sense of self,” explains Vander Linden. “When they value themselves enough to come in, we are able to help them feel truly worth it and to heal and feel confident and capable again.” At Moment of Truth PT and in the new Healing Space Yoga Studio, Vander Linden encourages women to get to know their own bodies so they can be healthy, active, and feel like themselves. While she says most women never really understand myofascial release, they do feel the results. “What they do understand is feeling safe, feeling heard and feeling known, and I love getting to provide that space for them.” MomentOfTruthPT.com—S.L.-G. L I N D S AY TAY L O R SINFUL HAIR & BLOW DRY BAR
Lindsay Taylor worked her way through beauty school as a single mom, bartending nights to help provide for her kids. Now married, Taylor believes the struggle was worth it. After working for another salon, she decided to go out on her own. She started Sinful Hair & Blow Dry Bar in 2012, working from the ground up, and building her brand. She began by making house calls and posting advertisements on social media. Today, Taylor runs Sinful Hair & Blow Dry Bar out of a retail location in Arrowhead Ranch. She specializes in blondes—although all hair colors are welcome. At Sinful Hair, guests can book just about any hair service, including a blow dry and style, balayage, Brazilian blowouts, cuts, highlighting, color, and other treatments. Taylor believes that she helps other women feel more empowered. “I truly love making women feel beautiful and empowered,” explains Taylor. She also believes that as a hairdresser, she can listen to someone, be a confidante, and perhaps turn their day around. The Sinful Blow Dry Bar motto is “Prepare to be BLOWN away.” That’s exactly what Taylor offers to her customers. She believes she has the dream job. “My job is so much more than just doing hair,” she explains. “I build relationships and friendships.” SinfulBlowDryBar.com—S.L.-G. 18

K E L LY Y U KAWAII SUSHI & ASIAN CUISINE Kelly Yu’s Aunt Lisa always dreamed of having a restaurant. So, when Yu came to the United States in 2004, she knew that she wanted to help her aunt—who had helped her so much—make that dream come true. Today, Yu and Aunt Lisa, as well as other family members, run three restaurants—two locations of the popular Kawaii Sushi & Asian Cuisine, which serves Cantonese-style dishes and sushi, and Poke Maki, which offers fresh poke, sushi, and ramen. The GM/co-owner Yu runs the front of the house, which she loves. She also loves that the restaurants have become part of the fabric of the community. “People come in to relax and create memories with their friends and families,” she says. “We have people who come in to celebrate milestones—every year they come in to celebrate with us. We get to know them. “We’re a family-owned business and we’re passionate about what we do. We not only want to feed people, but to help everyone create good times and memories in the restaurant.” Yu is just as passionate about the quality of the food served and her customers as she is about giving back to the community. She volunteers, is active in local Chambers of Commerce; donates food to first responders, schools, and hospitals; and mentors others. KawaiiCuisine.com—M.G.

SHELLIE SMALL PINSPIRATION
When Shellie Small received a message that she was going to leave her corporate job and start a business, she began looking to make a career move that was family friendly. And, since her own children were very crafty, she felt Pinspiration—A DIY craft studio—would be a perfect fit! “I was a customer four years ago, and as soon as I saw the opportunity, it just made sense,” she explains. “I love that I’m the business owner, but also that I get to help others create memories, spend time with their families, and make amazing and creative pieces that they can use since our projects are functional, and that they can make their craft vision come to life.” Pinspiration offers a variety of projects and experiences, including candle-making, string art, wood pallets, canvas design, wine glass design, a Jackson Pollock-inspired splatter art room, and so much more. In addition to creating a place where people can make memories, Small wanted to create a community space to help others. She mentors others business owners and collaborates with them, often having them use her space. “I love helping people bring their craft vision to life, helping others—and other business owners—succeed. “This is a very fun place, and we have something for everyone ages 2-and-up. Even if you don’t feel like you’re crafty or can’t paint, we have something for you here.” Pinspiration.com—M.G. 20

114 MILES OF SHORELINE WITH BOATING, SWIMMING, AND WATER SPORTS LESS THAN 20 MINUTES NORTH OF THE LOOP 101
LAKE PLEASANT REGIONAL PARK IS PART OF MARICOPA COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION. The 23,362-acre park features 114 miles of shoreline around the reservoir, which gets its water from the Agua Fria River. There are many year-round activities available at Lake Pleasant—located about 20 minutes north of the Loop 101— including camping, boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, picnicking, water sports, and even dining. Water levels fluctuate throughout the year, so check online before you visit to find out which areas offer the best outdoor activities. As Brian Straight, general manager at Scorpion Bay Marina says, “It’s amazing how many people don’t realize we have lakes so close by. And, the size of the lake surprises people.”

A YEAR-ROUND WATER PLAYGROUND (CONTINUED)
LAKE PLEASANT HISTORY Today’s Lake Pleasant sits along the Agua Fria River, which supplied water to the Hohokam people from 700 to 1450 AD. As miners and settlers moved to the area in the late 1800s, they built a small dam to hold water. Flooding soon destroyed that first dam, but the Carl Pleasant Dam was completed in 1928. At the time, it was the world’s largest multiple arch concrete dam. Steel ties replaced the concrete in 1935, and it became Waddell Dam in 1964. In 1968 it became part of the Central Arizona Project, a 336-mile series of canals, pipelines, tunnels, and storage reservoirs. As a major reservoir for the Phoenix area, Lake Pleasant needed to grow. The New Waddell Dam, completed in the late summer of 1992, created the Lake Pleasant we know today, which stores 1.1 million acrefeet of water and serves as a year-round playground for visitors. CAMPING AT LAKE PLEASANT REGIONAL PARK Lake Pleasant Regional Park features two campgrounds, each of which requires advanced reservations. There are developed sites with water, electricity, a picnic table, a ramada, a barbecue grill, a fire ring, and a dump station. There are also semi-developed sites and tent sites with a ramada, picnic table, a barbecue grill, and a fire ring. Desert Tortoise Campground features 25 developed sites and 39 semi-developed sites. Roadrunner Campground features 71 developed sites. There is a group area at Desert Tortoise with an area for RVs, designed for groups of at least 10 RVs or tents. You will find restrooms and/ or showers at all campgrounds. Lake Pleasant also has boat-in camping, available at the 10 Lane Parking Lot.

One of the most exciting additions is already underway? Creating a boutique floating resort. Scorpion Bay already has one floating cabin, and four more should be available by 2022, with a total of 14 in the future. According to Straight, “Each cabin has a private slip for your own personal boat or one you rent. Then, you can enjoy the lake and pull your boat up to your front door.” Scorpion Bay is also home to Scorpion Bay Grill. It opens at 11 a.m. daily, serving lunch and cocktails Sunday through Thursday, and adding a seasonal dinner menu on Friday and Saturday evenings. Straight says it’s not uncommon for locals to make the 20-minute drive out for a waterfront lunch even if they’re not staying for the day to go hiking or boating. There is a free electric tram to transport you from the parking lot to the dock. PLEASANT HARBOR MARINA Pleasant Harbor (PleasantHarbor.com) is the lake’s second full-service marina. It features an RV Resort with 253 full hook-up sites, 60 partial hook-up sites, and many dry camping/ tent sites. All sites include water and electricity. Full-service sites add sewer and phone. The RV Resort includes a clubhouse, heated pool, bocce ball, pickleball, basketball, showers, and laundry facilities. Reservations are required. Popular activities include fishing, hiking, riding horses and bikes and enjoying the spectacular views. Wintertime brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. Watching wildlife, such as bighorn sheep, elk, moose and mule deer, is a popular activity as well.
2.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite National Park boasts giant sequoia trees, breathtaking water-

3. YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres include colorful hot springs, awe-inspiring waterfalls, fascinating mudpots, explosive geysers, diverse wildlife and more. It is home to more hot springs and geysers than anywhere else on Earth. The oldest and largest herd of bison in the country lives at Yellowstone, as well as elk, wolves and grizzly bears.
4.
BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is home to the world’s largest concentration of hoodoos on Earth. With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers, photographers, stargazers and cross-country skiers.
5.
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Visitors will find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Going-to-the-Sun Road, known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country, is a paved, two-lane highway that divides the park into east and west regions.

ZION NATIONAL PARK Zion National Park’s colorful sandstone cliffs, lush plateaus covered in pine and junipers, narrow canyons, the Virgin River, plus seeps, springs and waterfalls are just some of the scenic wonders here. One of Zion’s most popular hikes is known as the Narrows, the slimmest section of Zion Canyon. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail.
7. GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above the Jackson Hole Valley. The Teton Mountains, the youngest in the Rockies, are reflected majestically on the surfaces of six pristine lakes and the Snake River. Experienced climbers can summit the 13,770-foot Grand Teton, and long-distance hikers can take the Paintbrush CanyonCascade Canyon Loop for impressive views of the mountain.
8.
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK This UNESCO World Heritage Site is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep. The South Rim is home to Grand Canyon Village and Bright Angel Trail. The West Rim is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the edge of a cliff. The North Rim is the most remote access point, allowing visitors to experience the park firsthand through intense hiking and backpacking and thrilling river rafting.

9.
ARCHES NATIONAL PARK Arches National Park is defined by its natural sandstone arches, stunning red rocks and beautiful colors. The park has the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. Hikers can take advantage of Arches National Park’s numerous trails ranging from short hikes to Balanced Rock and the Double Arch to more strenuous routes through the Fiery Furnace and up to the Delicate Arch. Visitors may spot a variety of desert animals, including lizards, birds and snakes, depending on the time of day.
10. HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK To visit one of the country’s best national parks, journey to Maui’s Haleakala National Park. The name of this national park translates to “House of the Sun.” Legend goes that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood at the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the days last longer. The Haleakala Crater is a dormant volcano that sits at 10,000 feet above sea level, and visitors flock to this location to view one of the most spectacular sunrises on Earth. Perhaps just as impressive are the park’s sunsets, which give way to star-studded skies. Haleakala National Park spans more than 30,000 acres and includes red deserts and rock gardens near the summit and waterfalls and streams in coastal Kipahulu. The park has beautiful hiking trails that can be traveled by foot or by horseback, and it is also home to more endangered species than any other park in the National Park Service.
Hopefully, this list of the 10 best national parks has inspired you to start planning your next adventure. Whether the mountains are calling, your inner daredevil needs to be satiated or a scenic road trip is in order, America’s national parks are begging to be explored! CityLifestyle.com/NorthPeoria
