Regarding traditions, we have until Jan. 8 to take in Shady Brook Farm's Holiday Light Show, which features more than three million lights illuminating acres of farmland. Guests can view displays and characters via a drive-through experience or in an open-air wagon ride. The displays are handmade at the farm and welded together by employees. I can't wait to see this year's three or four new displays. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you, along with trying to do our best as well.

COMPASSIONATE MEDICAL PRACTICE REVOLUTIONIZES WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE WITH INDIVIDUALIZED, INTEGRATIVE CARE

A new, local medical practice is among those changing how the health care industry approaches women’s health. Bucks County Women’s Wellness offers gynecological services in an intimate, state-of-the-art setting with a serene, spa-like feel. Trained at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine and board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as holistic and integrative medicine, Victoria Petty, M.D., practiced obstetrics and gynecology at area hospitals before opening Bucks County Women’s Wellness during September 2021. Her vision for the practice was a place that focuses on the whole self and provides individualized patient care. “What we do is in our name, ‘Bucks County Women’s Wellness,’” Vicki says. "We focus on women’s general well-being and perform preventative services while also diagnosing and treating a broad range of gynecological health issues." Services include well-woman exams and routine Pap smears, while gynecological health conditions they diagnose and treat include infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids and ovarian cysts.

The practice also performs vaginal, pelvic and laparoscopic procedures, including hysterectomies and laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis diagnosis and treatment, using leading technologies. These include a colposcope, used to treat patients with abnormal Pap smears, and a hysteroscope, used to look inside the uterus. What makes Bucks County Women’s Wellness unique is their philosophy that prevention is key to modern health care and that holistic therapies play valuable roles in treating patients’ symptoms. “Functional medicine has grown and become more mainstream and commonplace. More people realize it’s valid and is more accessible to them,” Vicki says. "Our emphasis is on quality of life, not just treating symptoms of disease. We want to help patients get through their symptoms more easily and feel better.” Bucks County Women’s Health doesn't practice obstetrics, which enables them to focus exclusively on gynecological conditions and addressing patients' individual concerns. “We take the time to listen to each patient, something they appreciate,” the doctor says, explaining that they specifically set up schedules to allow adequate, comprehensive discussions with patients, including their associated home lives and careers. Without offering obstetrics, the practice refers pregnant patients to other obstetrical practices, though these patients often return, especially for the peaceful atmosphere. “We routinely hear that patients love the office space," she says. The practice treats women of all ages. Since opening, the doctor has found many patients seeking help in relieving symptoms pertaining to menopause and perimenopause, the process leading to menopause marked by intermittent menstrual periods. One therapy they offer is hormone replacement therapy, a “safe option for most women,” says Vicki.

They also offer holistic products for symptom relief. “Menopause is a very transitional time for patients, so we’ll help find a therapy that works for them, whether supplements or hormones, local or systemic,” she says. Joining the doctor is physician assistant Monika Mansmann, PAC. Vicki says Monika's broad experience within a variety of medical specialties proves beneficial, especially for a practice rooted in integrative therapies. “Her breadth of experience is helpful when handling a variety of gynecologic problems, as some can be neurological or another type of condition,” Vicki says. “To best treat complex cases, you need to understand the whole self, including all the other systems and symptoms.” A small part of the practice is devoted to performing aesthetic procedures, including Botox and fillers. While some might consider this an unusual service for a gynecological practice to offer, it aligns well with their holistic philosophy of helping women feel good, Vicki says, as looking good contributes to a positive sense of self. Additionally, Vicki enjoys making her patients feel seen and heard. “Patients tell us they appreciate the time we devote to their individual needs. Shawn Stout grew up helping with his family’s transportation business and his family's farm, where he learned to ride horses and maintain the stables. Eventually, he became part-owner of the family business alongside his two brothers. Shortly following a trip to Wyoming with his father and brothers, which renewed Shawn’s love of horses, he recalls passing by the Duncraven Equestrian Center in Titusville, noticing a 'For Sale' sign. "I could clearly picture in my mind its beauty once restored," he adds, conveying to his family members his idea for a new family business to share their passion with riders of all ages, teaching them the horsemanship and camaraderie central to the sport. By December of 2021, the property became the Stouts' to enjoy and nurture.

Pam Long Niederer, manager of the Club at Duncraven, the center’s all-new clubhouse, describes Duncraven's history. “Duncraven in the 1990s through 2000s was a premier, state-of-the-art facility," she says. "The Stout family’s vision was to bring it back to its former glory, improve upon it and put it back on the map.” The 60-acre property has access to trails, as well as Washington Crossing Park. Shawn and his family worked diligently to re-open the property in early 2022 after undergoing extensive renovations, which are ongoing. “With a farm this size, we’re always going to be upgrading and improving,” says Pam, excited to speak of the property’s restored barn with 35 brand-new stalls, along with new roof and siding.

In addition to the center's two, outdoor warm-up rings and three renovated outdoor show rings, a large indoor arena features state-of-the-art F.I.C.S. fusion footing, LED lighting and innovative technologies, she says. These include a misting system and an upper-level, temperature-controlled lounge to view the festivities. The new Duncraven Equestrian Center is, for one, a horse-boarding facility. In September, the center began accepting boarders as individuals who own horses and pay the center a monthly fee for feeding and caretaking. Riding lessons with the center’s trainers are available to boarders and those without their own horses, as Duncraven has its own horses available for lessons. In addition to boarding and providing custom lessons for riders and horses, the center offers horses available for sale or lease. CONTINUED >

Kim Wickenden, with 40 years of professional experience working and training with Olympic gold medalists and other professionals, is Duncraven’s resident trainer. Before turning professional, Kim was a former WEF Circuit Champion two consecutive years. She qualified for the Amateur World Cup and competed in championships at Devon, Washington and Hampton Classic. At Duncraven, she provides lessons to individuals of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders, some of whom compete at shows. Kim shares her longtime dedication and horsemanship with students in a program that emphasizes the importance of a complete understanding of each animal. These days, Duncraven regularly hosts hunter jumper horse shows open to boarders and other riding enthusiasts year-round on all-weather footing, while winter shows are hosted indoors. The large property offers generous space for parking as well as food trucks, sponsors, vendors and jump rental. The center also hosts clinics led by expert and competitive equestrians. These events draw numerous spectators, especially when wellknown riders visit, such as Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Joe Fargis. The USEF Lifetime Achievement Award recipient hosted a two-day clinic for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders at the center in December. While Shawn says his family's intent was to restore the facility’s original luster, they also were given an idea to improve upon the original. Duncraven Equestrian Center’s extensive renovations also include the Club at Duncraven, which brings "a country-club lifestyle to an equestrian facility," describes Pam, making it an integral part of the community.

The clubhouse includes space for events and private parties, a fully upgraded private shower and locker room and an impressive lounge area with a refrigerator stocked with refreshments. Membership, which is open to individuals, couples and families as well as boarders and non-boarders, includes four lessons a month using one of the center’s horses. It also includes full access to the clubhouse for “a place to hang out before and after riding,” says the Club manager. A children's play area at the Club will be completed in 2023. Pam shares that she first explored her love of horses as a child while living in Pennington, eventually becoming a junior equestrian. After receiving a college degree, she worked in advertising and lived in Arizona for nine years before returning home to Jersey. When her two young sons showed an interest in trail riding, she saw an opportunity to re-explore her own earlier passion. Living near Duncraven, she stopped in one day to show her interest and support. The Stouts approached Pam with a new concept that evolved into the Club at Duncraven, a wonderful enhancement to the property. “I really wanted to be a part of their vision,” she says. Pam got her wish when she was asked to join the team as Duncraven's Club manager. While Pam and the rest of the team work hard, she says she has developed a bond with her colleagues because they share the same passion. “People who work with horses do it because they love being around them,” she says. “It's more than a job but a way of life.” She adds, “We also have a lot of fun. it’s become an annual tradition graciously underwritten by Bucks Beautiful co-founders Jack and Carol McCaughan. In 2022, Bob and Alice Vernon co-sponsored additional bulbs, creating a combined 25,000 blooms that will be a cheerful display for residents and visitors alike this spring. Bulbs were cultivated opposite Doylestown’s Borough Hall at the new Broad Commons Park, which contains a playground, picnic area and entertainment space to be added later. Jack and Carol McCaughan also endowed a planting to grace the grounds of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Doylestown. Daffodils accompanied the 50 native trees that Bucks Beautiful donated in May to Buckingham Township’s George M. Bush Park. This popular public park was developed through a collaboration between the township, the Lion’s Club and the community. Snipes Farm and Education Center, a nonprofit organization in Morrisville that prioritizes the preservation of small farms, open space, healthy food and sustaining the Earth and its natural resources. Morrisville’s Patriot Park and Historic Summerseat, once home to signors of the Declaration of Independence, and of the Constitution, and a Revolutionary War headquarters for George Washington. This passive park benefits residents and compliments this important destination for heritage tourism.

Bucks Beautiful is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that beautifies Bucks County. The Bulbs for Bucks Program was the inspiration of board member Chuck Gale, to beautify Bucks County at key locations with the first splendor of spring: blooming daffodils. Chuck says, “I like the idea of planting daffodils because the bulbs multiply each year, and the project is long-lasting for future generations to enjoy. To my knowledge, this is the largest bulb planting project in the state of Pennsylvania.” Since the Bulbs initiative debuted in 2010, more than 1.6 million daffodil bulbs were established throughout the county. In addition to Bulbs for Bucks, the group's reforestation initiative, RePlant Bucks, is restoring the local tree canopy. They also sponsor educational programs, community gardens and pop-up parks. As a board-certified emergent care physician and owner of the Well Lounge, Seth Althoff, M.D., has a short amount of time to triage patients that enter the emergency room, making it difficult to find the root cause of a patient’s illness or provide the time to help a patient make the changes needed to prevent a return visit.

Dr. Althoff says he designs a manageable plan that encompasses the expert advice and counseling from nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, exercise scientists, physical therapists and psychologists, depending on the needs of each patient to provide a 360 total well care experience. Regarding his own medical training, Dr. Althoff earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Eastern Mennonite University. He attended Temple Medical School and completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia. He completed a fellowship in medical education. He also earned a fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, and is still an active member of the Wilderness Medical Society. All Well Lounge patients meet with Dr. Althoff. "Every plan begins with an advanced cardio panel and comprehensive advanced hormone testing, followed by a 90-minute, in-depth analysis of the patient’s health history, their concerns and goals, as well as the lab results and a roadmap to move forward," he says. Depending on the plan design, follow-up sessions are scheduled with various practitioners to continue to optimize Well Lounge patients' health and well-being. "The foundation of health is focused on nutritional, lifestyle and stress management, partnered with mindful movement. The connection to the Newtown Athletic Club allows patients to utilize full-service locker rooms and lounges, including the salt sauna and steam room, yoga, meditation and recovery spaces, as well as the new state-of-the-art, Technogym Bio Circuit, which provides an individually personalized workout that is always guided based on the patient’s strength and mobility," he adds. Well Lounge programs range from a total holistic approach with health and nutrition coaching,

personal training or solo training via the Bio Circuit line, IV Therapy and other recovery modalities to the use of medical weight loss prescriptions, such as, semaglutide as the FDA-approved weight loss medication, as well as the only FDA-approved medical device, Emsculpt Neo, to decrease body fat and increase muscle mass. A good diet, one that’s good for you, exercise and quality sleep are the commonly known parts of that equation. But what about laughter? Kicking its heels since the mid-1800s, the 225-seat Newtown Theatre is a must-stop for major comedians working the circuit. As a multifaceted venue, the theater also spreads humor through movies, airing Elf (for adults) this past Christmas. Previous acts include working actor and comic Adam Ferrara and Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling, who gives the audience a chance to stump him with what else: a joke. Acts booked for 2023 include Dave Landau, a finalist on Last Comic Standing, legendary comic Bobby Collins and the red-hot Vic Dibitetto. Ticket prices are reasonable, cocktails are available and laughs are guaranteed!

Dinner and laughs with top comedians is a great way to spend an evening. The company “Comedy on the Crick” is a traveling group of funny people that perform at delicious venues around Bucks County. Though their 'home base' is the Blue Monkey in Levittown, the tour hit the Green Parrot in Newtown recently with two sold-out shows and a smashing success. The restaurant staff cooks in a unique, wood-fired oven, and is well-known for its fun-going atmosphere, where if guests can’t make it there for comedy night, they're sure to catch some good-ribbing humor at the bar any other evening!

Known mostly for a place to catch a live band or Broadway quality shows, New Hope isn't known as a spot for jest. However, summers bring comedy heat to the Bucks County Playhouse where Friday nights host headliner comedians. Also featured are one-person shows with funny twists, such as this past summer where Cindy Williams, from the late-1970s sitcom Laverne and Shirley stopped in and performed her national tour titled “Me, Myself & Shirley." The Bucks County Playhouse is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, with the site and structure dating back to 1790.
