The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. Current Bling That Makes Great Gifts Michael Kanoff, owner/operator of Michael’s Jewelers, spent decades consulting and building relationships with early birds, as well as the last-minute shoppers with a desperate need to complete a holiday list. To make things easier, Michael started hosting “ladies night out” prior to holiday seasons at which women can create “Wish Lists" to be later filled by a spouse, partner or loved one. They held their first one of this year's season on Oct. 26. "I truly enjoy helping clients find perfect gifts and building lasting relationships, which includes tracking previous gift purchases to help continue to build the clients perfect jewelry ensemble," he says.

Though always popular, one of the hottest trends in jewelry is layered jewelry, specifically in gold. Michael says layered looks allow for spotlighting multiple pieces at once, while expressing personalized style and creativity. Layering necklaces also allows for versatility and adaptability in accessorizing. These layered looks remain in vogue, and are a "solid, can’t-miss gift."

YELLOW GOLD Yellow gold is back. White gold, for quite a while, was in, however, jewelry is in some regards a “fashion” business where favored products move in cycles. Michael says 1980s fashion is very popular, with gold chains for men leading the forefront of the craze. On the women’s side, paper clip jewelry or yellow gold necklaces and bracelets remain topof-mind. Engagement and wedding bands in yellow gold also returned.

Design lovers always have been pained to create homes to “love living in and coming home to." Yet, as the pandemic shifted most of us to even greater home use, for both work and play, more attention is being paid to designing for today, and for entertainment. With the holidays nearing, here are three rules to guide the next design project with an eye toward designing for year-round enjoyment and for when crowds gather.

NO. 1: DESIGN BY THINKING OF INTIMACY AND EXPANSION AT THE SAME TIME.

“Large size” homeowners are surprised when oversized dream rooms present challenges for cozy daily living. “Modest size” homeowners are sometimes frustrated by rooms that easily support comfort and intimacy, but may not accommodate crowds. Regardless of a room’s size, daily living requires intimately connected seating zones. Nobody wants

to use a bullhorn to be able to talk to the person sitting on the nearest club chair. Designing with distinct seating zones, and more than one if a room so requires, ensures both comfort for a shared Friday night cocktail between spouses, as it does ensure space expansion at holiday time. It’s perfectly alright for a large room to have an unused zone when it’s not in “large-crowd-use.” The large great room showcased in this article boasts high ceilings and generous square footage. It requires two distinctly different seating zones for intimacy, each cozy in its own right, but used together wonderfully hosting a large extended family or more. For smaller-scaled spaces, include double duty furnishings, such as movable ottomans tucked beneath a console table or handsome nearby upholstered dining chairs that easily can be pulled into a space for expanded seating.

NO 2: DESIGN SPECIALTY SPACES TO INDULGE PASSIONS, THEN SHARE THEM AT HOLIDAY TIME. Mixologist at heart? A fantastic specialty space, such as a bar or wine room, is an ideal choice. Movie lover? A home theater or integrated media room is in the cards. Love gaming? A tricked-out game room or billiards room to enjoy on any given Friday night, but easily a hot ticket for entertainment, follows the same double-duty logic. Design spaces around personal passions and know that they will “share well” when guests enjoy them with their gracious hosts at holiday time and beyond.

NO. 3: JUGGLE SEATING NEEDS TO ACCOMMODATE RECLINING OR CROWDS. Extra-long, extra-deep sofas provide year-round comfort and are equally prized when entertaining. Equally so, movable seating like ottomans, custom beanbag chairs or barstools at a console also can act as overflow seating as shown in the integrated media room highlighted in this article. The other important consideration for dual-duty spaces is the deliberate use of hard-wearing fabrics that stand up to toddlers or red wine. Thanks to the significant improvement to indoor-outdoor fabric, this is easily done. These fabrics may cost up to 30% more than a similar home fabric, but for carefree hosting and daily living, the price may be right. CONTINUED >

Sensory Spaces Parent Provides Tips Regarding How To Establish At-Home Sensory Spots For Children ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Through lessons learned by local entrepreneur and self-proclaimed dedicated DIYer Genavieve Shingle Jaffe, other parents can establish beneficial sensory spots within homes, especially for children on the autism spectrum or with ADHD. A sensory spot is basically a safe and quiet place in a home for a child to go when they either want a break from regular activities or need to self-regulate. "Our son has autism and ADHD, so we designed and built a space in our home and it supports both of our kids," Gena explains. Sensory spaces are designated areas that provide mindful activities where individuals can expend excessive energy or for the opposite need, simply chill out. School teachers say the benefits of these spaces also help children with anxiety challenges or for getting 5-minute recharges outside classrooms to regain focus. Typically, every part of such rooms is selected intentionally to support specific sensory systems and evolving needs. Gena reminds these areas don't have to be entire rooms. "It could just be a certain area in a room, a safe corner, or designated space," she explains. Following are ideas of items to include in an at-home sensory room/space: • Large crash pillows or mats • Bean bag chair • Body sock • A net swing or therapy sensory swing • Fidget items that allow for a repetitive moment • Weighted blankets or vests • Lap pads • Tunnel • Therapy balls • Sensory break cards • Books to read • A stuffed animal or favorite toy • Calming, alerting and organizing activities for kids • Rock wall • Monkey bars

Gena says she's had good luck with ideas and materials for sensory spots from companies such as Project Playroom, Fun + Function and Yogibo.

STEPS TO CREATE SENSORY LOCATIONS SAFETY: Gena says to first think about safety: No sharp corners, outlet covers in place, cords and other objects that could cause harm if a child is having a particularly bad day. There are times when children may be so upset they throw themselves into things or throw items at other people. This is one of the big benefits of crash pads or bean bags; children can jump and dive onto them seeking that sensory input they require. LIGHTING: If possible, ensure there are no fluorescent lights in the specific area, Gena suggests. Many times, fluorescent lights can be irritating for children with visual and auditory sensitivities. If there's no option with changing out the lighting, cover the fluorescent lights with heat safe paper to help cut down on the glare, or just don't turn them on. Include soft lighting, such as Christmas lights along the ceiling, or a dim lit lamp. A light table would even be a good option, as long as it won’t present a safety hazard for anyone (when considering a child who tends to hit or throw things). CONSIDER AGE-FRIENDLY APPROACHES: Construct a rock wall, which is actually easy to install by attaching ¾-inch plywood directly to studs and then drilling the rock holds on top of that. A pod or compression swing provides vestibular input, which oftentimes can provide calm, as well as help individuals learn where their body ends. Some swings come with stands, while others are drilled into ceilings. Find a flat wall and make it into Plexiglas, mirror, paper, chalkboard paint or whiteboard. Working upright on a vertical surface helps to promote grasp development and encourages visual-motor skills. Play with magnets, wall clings, different adhesives and art mediums for tactile experiences. Body socks can help all ages. Email Gena at genajaffe@gmail.com with questions.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board INGREDIENTS • Fig Jelly • Honey • Variety of Cheeses • Salami or meat of choice • Olives (provide a variety) • Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, different types of berries, persimmons • Pickles, both sweet and sour • Fresh rosemary, or real greenery • Crackers DIRECTIONS Place jars or bowls of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish wreath area with fresh cranberries.

Tips for creating perfect grazing boards: • Start with larger items first and build around those. • Ensure there are enough food items to fill the design space. It’s best to overfill so the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods to apply. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors away from each other to help give symmetry. • Always include crackers, breadsticks or bread to use as a vessel for cheeses or dips. • For times without fancy charcuterie boards available, build a feast on breadboards, chopping boards (use two side by size to get the right size if needed), baking sheets, baking trays or marble pastry boards. • If unsure of a presentation surface, line it with parchment or baking paper.

HOT COCOA JAR • hot cocoa mix • chocolate chips • mini marshmallows Instructions: over stove top, bring water (or milk) to a simmer. Add cocoa mix and stir until chocolate chips have melted. Top with marshmallows. Enjoy!

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
