Newtown Borough Safety: 'Slow Your Roll' Through Town

An important safety matter we've previously covered is getting addressed by city officials and community members in new ways. Stickers and magnets are surfacing throughout town to encourage cars to slow down and pedestrians to use crosswalks. The awareness campaign is part of Walk Friendly Newtown, the borough's newest committee formed in response to an increase in pedestrian accidents in town. Committee members distributed pedestrian safety window stickers throughout the State Street business district carrying a simple, but vital message: "Newtown Loves Pedestrians. Please Use The Crosswalks." We applaud committee members for also giving out free car magnets as visual reminders urging motorists to "Slow Your Roll" with the depiction of an adult and child in a crosswalk; these magnets are now available at the Newtown Borough Hall. The committee's next plans include reaching out to Walk Friendly Communities, a national recognition program to determine the borough's eligibility; reviewing studies completed; conducting a baseline survey; and initiating a Walk Friendly assessment. These community engagement steps being taken should make our local area safer for everyone, especially beloved children and pets -- which we're pleased to spotlight in this, our annual Kids + Pets edition. Here's to the dog (and cat) days of summer!

Newtown Graduating Senior Named National Merit Scholarship Winner Anjali Amin, of Yardley, a graduating student from the George School in Newtown, was named a winner of the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Subject Tutoring "Subject tutoring for grades K-12 is a service that typically benefits students who are either underperforming or struggling to understand particular concepts," says Mikala. Students are paired with instructors who best fit their needs to form a connection. She says once students overcome specific struggles over a period of approximately six months to one year, they typically move to academic coaching.

Academic Coaching At this level, students are ready to "build their brain and become independent learners," explains Mikala. This curriculum veers from pure academics, as students are “coached”-- rather than “tutored”-- to learn skills they need to be their best academic selves. Academic coaching teaches important real-world skills not typically taught in school. Mikala says it includes teaching kids and teens to become self-aware, overcome feelings of failure and selfdoubt, and let go of negative self-talk.

Mentoring Once academic coaching is mastered, mentoring is next. This teaches personal development and confidence-building through mindset shifts -- a “transition from academics to grow and become the best version of ourselves,” Mikala describes. This program is geared for grades 6 through middle school when students’ self-esteem is tested. And, starting September 2022, peerto-peer mentoring -- with older students mentoring younger ones -- will be available through a curriculum co-created with nonprofit Level Up XYZ.

HEALING SPORTS INJURIES THROUGH SOFT TISSUE THERAPY With Issues From Repetitive Motion Use On The Rise, Dr. Jennifer Grozalis Helps Young Athletes Get Back Into Action ARTICLE BY BECKY DIAMOND Being active benefits both the mind and body; it's especially important for children, helping to boost their self-confidence, social skills and team building. However, children are starting sports at much younger ages than in the past, and often sticking with the same sport year-round. While self-satisfying, this increases the chance of repetitive use problems, resulting in overuse injuries at a much younger age. By the time athletes enter high school, they're frequently experiencing more severe injuries because they haven't given their muscles and joints a chance to heal. In turn, this increases the incidence of strains, sprains, tendinitis, bursitis and stress fractures. Dr. Jennifer Grozalis, of Synergy Rehabilitation and Chiropractic, says that’s why it's so important for children to have a doctor who can treat these injuries from the time they're young. "This allows them to continue their favorite sport throughout their high school and college careers," she adds. Synergy Chiropractic specializes in sports injuries, specifically soft tissue injuries. As a chiropractor who focuses on muscle, fascia, tendon and ligament injuries, Dr. Grozalis says she is the only chiropractor in the area certified in Active Release Techniques (ART), a medical massage- and movement-based therapy designed specifically to treat athletes of all ages. Patented ART applies state-of-the-art, soft tissue movement-based treatments to solve problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. The goal and difference with this non-invasive therapy is to strengthen the area injured and promote faster healing. She also applies the Graston Technique, an instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables the doctor to effectively detect and treat scar tissue and restrictions that affect normal function. This technique is also being used by NBA, NHL, NFL and Major League Baseball trainers. “When an athlete is injured, it isn't because they're weak, it's because of overuse,” explains Dr. Grozalis. "These strains to soft tissue result in micro tears and the formation

of scar tissue, decreasing range of motion and causing pain that impacts the athlete’s abilities." The techniques used by Dr. Grozalis are specifically designed to eliminate these injury-caused barriers and help children and teens quickly return to their sport. The techniques also promote overall, healthy cell growth. Every treatment is tailored to the patient’s needs, she says, depending on the symptoms and the muscles that need to be treated. Types of treatment include Kinesio taping, ultrasound and laser therapy, which Dr. Grozalis refers to as “amazing at speeding up the healing process, literally cutting healing time in half.” However, she stresses all therapies take time to perform and are not a quick, “in and out” or adjustment type of treatments. Dr. Grozalis says her interest in sports rehabilitation was sparked when she saw a need to treat athletes quickly and effectively to get them back on the field or into action. “The normal medical route takes a lot of time and often doesn’t address the myofascial issues that these athletes face,” she says. By using a muscular overuse treatment approach, she says “once this is fixed, they can actually benefit from healing exercises and physical therapy.” Because the same techniques can be used for any kind of injury, she also treats children and teenagers who are not athletes. Some patients see her weekly or monthly during their sports season to address any minor issues right away before they grow into a larger concern. Patients also schedule time with her right before a game or a meet because the techniques she employs increases their range of motion, allowing them to play at their optimal level. She has seen patients who are swimmers and runners cut their times, and football players and baseball players who perform better as well. Tony Napoli, known more affectionately as “Mr. Nap,” is a local artist who has spread his work and abilities around local towns over the past three decades. One may not know his exact name, but many have seen his work in one or more places around greater Bucks County. In 1992, Tony landed a part-time job as a substitute teacher at Pennsbury High school and started the day before the prom. Tony recalls “seeing all sorts of commotion, people carrying trees and hundreds of students taping up the walls." That, of course, was only preparation for the prom. "I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in a high school setting, and was amazed by the artistic detail of the event," Tony remembers. Part-time led to a full-time role for Tony as an art teacher at the school. “Fast forward to 2011, and I was running the entire prom,” Tony passionately says, as it was a dream job to be charged with heading the most famous prom in America, which is the subject of the book Wonderland: A Year in the Life of an American High School. Tony has many fond memories from this experience, such as “2019 having an (artistic) Falcon with a boombox in its claws swooping down to deliver the music to the prom.” Recently retired, Tony completed a 30-year career in his roles at Pennsbury, 10 running the prom where Tony would oversee, as Tony puts it, “spend their entire senior year planning for the event." Retirement didn’t slow Tony down one bit. He started his “second career” being the king of all murals, having painted eight murals spread throughout the county since hanging up his art teaching smock. That’s when he’s not busy working on regular size paintings, of which many of his beautiful landscapes can be seen hanging on the walls of his home in Langhorne. For one of his first mural projects, Tony says a town commissioned him to do a tribute to the song "Bristol Stomp," a song made famous by the Dovells. The town, of course, was Bristol where

he ideated and created the classic and fun mural, towering 24 feet high. “Friday night dances were a big thing, and you can hear the stomping of the floorboards from blocks away.” recalls Tony. The Dovells had a follow-up song “Bristol Twistin' Annie," of which the title origination is unknown, though there is likely an Annie out there to credit for the hit. Painting murals, especially larger ones, is not a one-person job. Tony has a volunteer crew consisting mostly of former students and parents, all of which Tony has had a positive impact on in their life and this is a way for them to give back. His wife, Shirlee, even gets in on the action, contributing some of the design elements on the projects. Leslie Kliesh and Annie Kruzinski are two of Tony’s main “assistants,” as he calls them.

Tony has been plenty busy in Yardley, with two projects complete and a third in the design phase. He painted the stunning “Greetings From Yardley” mural, positioned on the side of the firehouse building on main street. The mural theme is based on the iconic 1950 postcards that were sold in all major tourism cities. It went from an idea of Tom Cramer, the building owner, to a project fired up by the group Experience Yardley. “The concept really captured my imagination” says Tony, who brought the large city feel to a small town where he said he wanted to “highlight the iconic things of the town within the name." He also painted one of the six present and future oversized ducks found around

the boro. His, named “Dapper,” where Tony says the inspiration came from “what I know more about than anything in the world – a tribute to the Pennsbury Prom.” The duck is featured wearing a tuxedo, with one side decorated to reflect a prom float. Tony’s upcoming project is an exciting one. Commissioned by the Girl Scouts and Yardley Borough, the theme is fairy tales and will be comprised of sketches handed in by girl scout members. He will have plenty of help from his painting entourage itching to assist him. The 5-foot tall and 40-feet wide mural will be in the works this summer. When asked how he schedules volunteers, Tony quips, “If you show up for more than 10 minutes, you pick up a brush”– proving that if you paint it, they will come!

Coexisting With Animals LOCAL EXPERT ENSURES PUBLIC SAFETY WHILE EDUCATING ABOUT LIVING WITH WILDLIFE

As an animal advocate, Jamie Fazzalore performs two important community services: one as animal control officer with the Lower Makefield Township Police and the other as owner/operator at Homestead Wildlife Control, a nuisance wildlife removal business. "Many wild critters are just looking for one of two things: food/water or a home. Prevention is key. If we take necessary measures, we can limit contact with wildlife. Part of my job is to educate the public in coexisting with our furry friends, leaving things be, as opposed to getting rid of them," asserts Jamie, a Lower Makefield resident who thoroughly understands the ecosystem from living there for 50 years.

"Wildlife help propagate plant life and rid our lawns and neighborhoods of unwanted and damaging insects and pests. In short, they help to ensure the balance of nature and biodiversity," says this certified wildlife specialist and registered trapper with Pennsylvania Game Commission/Bucks County Fish & Game. Jamie says she mainly deals with raccoons, opossums, groundhogs, squirrels, snakes, skunks, rabbits and perhaps deer fawns. "Truth be told, where animals end up is where people unintentionally provide these critters with food and housing. Let’s not blame the animals. We need to work together to find solutions satisfactory to the human and wild Lower Makefield residents," she adds. In her animal control role for the past 14 years, she deals solely with domestic dog and cat situations in Newtown Township, Lower Makefield Township, Yardley Borough and Washington Crossing State Park. She says she handles lost and found felines and canines, but cannot, and does not, go onto private property in her animal control capacity. She also investigates dog bites. "I enforce related Pennsylvania laws and township ordinances. I file charges for dangerous dogs and attend court cases, when necessary," she adds. Jamie says she ended up in animal-related jobs after taking pre-veterinary medicine courses at the University of Delaware, then gaining a bachelor's degree in finance, followed by working in fine jewelry for quite a few years. "I volunteered at Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center. In fact, I was past president of Aark's board of directors. So, I've always been interested in helping animals." Coming from a living-in-harmony approach, Jamie says she's very straightforward with homeowners about options. "Bird fledglings on the ground are among the most understood situations I get calls about. For a couple of days, the young birds need to learn to fly and spend time out of the nest. Mom and Dad are still feeding them. If you find them in an unsafe spot, like in the middle of a road, please move them to a safe spot nearby and let nature take its course. PEACH BREAD PUDDING INGREDIENTS • 1 loaf brioche • 5 fresh peaches • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 cups milk • 1 cup heavy cream • 5 eggs • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes. Dice peaches into medium dice. Place peaches, white sugar and butter in saucepan. Cook until sugar dissolves and peaches are soft. Mix all other ingredients together. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan and add peach mixture with brioche pieces and then add milk mixture. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting and enjoying.
