Summer and Adventure
July 2022 PUBLISHER

Summer's the perfect time to come up with a wish list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying small details around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it's refreshing to take time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating snow cones or ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky. I hope you're able to enjoy some of the many things our community offers during these hot days of summer, and that you make memories with those around you who you love.

Newtown Dentistry is celebrating 26 years in business, and founder Dr. Christine Landes says she still believes “Every day is a good day to smile" -- in fact, she encourages it. When this board-certified pediatric dentist opened her doors in 1996, she says it was her mission to cater to the needs of children by creating a “Dental Home," or a safe space where comfort and security replaces fear. In the early years, Dr. Chris became known as 'the purple dentist' because she encouraged her young patients to wear purple to appointments in exchange for surprises and added fun. Ultimately her goal was, and still is, for her patients to feel relaxed and at ease in a homelike ambiance. In fact, grand measures have been taken to create cheerful, themed spaces that many refer to as a mini Disney World. The reception area resembles that of a rustic lodge, while examining rooms take on a lake-side and wintery ski-inspired vacation vibe. However, the big wow factor is the waiting room treehouse where kids look forward to playing while awaiting their appointment. As Dr. Chris’ young patients grew, Newtown Dentistry grew along with them. Recognizing that extracurricular activities and homework consume a large portion of a teen’s day, in 2006, Newtown Dentistry incorporated Orthodontics to the practice. "Having the convenience of being able to combine both dental and orthodontic appointments into one office visit was a game changer for both patients and parents alike," says Dr. Chris, who didn't stop there, however. In 2014, Adult Dentistry was implemented into the practice, and in the fall of 2021, a designated adult treatment area was established. This adultonly, "vacation home" space was created to transport patients to a land of relaxation and serenity, shares Dr. Chris. "It was at that point I realized that my dream to provide full service dentistry and orthodontics to children and adults had become a reality. It’s like when you see your children become independent and thriving. It’s a feeling of satisfaction and pride,” she explains. In addition to physical and aesthetic growth, the Newtown Dentistry team prides themselves on offering patients the most state-of-the-art treatments available in the field. Patients enjoy professional care with access to services, such CONTINUED >

as same-day crowns, the SOPROLIFE camera for early cavity detection, intraoral 3D Panorex imaging, the LightScalpel C02 Laser for lip and tongue tie release and Silver Diamine Fluoride treatments for cavities. "We're proud and really happy to be providing full-service dental solutions," Dr. Chris says. She's spent the past nearly three decades dedicated to the well-being of her loyal patients, whom she and her team consider family, she says. "The people make the practice,” she adds. "We look forward to serving the community for many years to come." Dr. Chris says she's confident that the team's dental services will continue on the level and trajectory of the same excellence and care. As another patient service, Newtown Dentistry patients can set up in-house dental savings plans, if desired. "We are all one big family'' is their motto. 46 Blacksmith Road 215.770.3896 HomeForDentalCare.com

ARTICLE BY JOHN FIDUCCIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOMBA TACO+BAR / KEN BLAZE
Bomba Taco+Bar opened for business in Newtown during February, and quickly became a driving force in distinct taco-themed dining and drinks. Located on Eagle Road, the corner spot offers an indoor and outdoor food experience, and can house 170-plus guests between the dining room, bar and patio, says Andy Himmel, CEO, Paladar Restaurant Group. The unique chain started in Ohio, where there are three locations. The Newtown spot is the second in the region with the first being in Malvern. As the creation of Paladar Restaurant Group, Andy says Bomba brings a new delicacy, coupled with a fun atmosphere, to the area. Paladar also operates a sister brand under the moniker Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar. CONTINUED >

THE UNIQUE PLAY: Bomba ratcheted up the offering of tacos by several levels, with a wide variety of extremely exotic versions, including Nashville hot chicken, the plant daddy, Vietnamese meatball and Korean surf'n'turf. They also offer “Bomba bowls,” and a nice selection of house-made guacamole that includes a “craft your own” option. "It's all about an elevated dining experience," says Andy.
•
AN APP WITH PURPOSE: “Social Club” is the Bomba app, a name as cool as the app itself. Outside of the usuals, such as ordering online and building points, the app offers a free taco each month with purchase, which could easily drive a customer to try everything on the menu. It’s also the easiest way to stay updated on events and specials.
•
FUN MERGED WITH DELICIOUS: Eating is considered a utility by some, fulfilled by ordering and consuming food. Bomba has taken this need and fused it with giving guests a fun experience. The restaurant is filled with vibrant colors and music, and is more of the local place to be than just a food hall. Andy adds that their vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are excellent choices for dietary restrictions.
•
COCKTAILS AND DREAMS: Bomba is quickly becoming known as the “Hometown Hangout” for happy hours. Scratch-made cocktails of all types and signature margaritas, a fan favorite, drives patrons to the site to decompress after long days, assures Andy. 215.944.9250 BombasTacos.com

EXCEPTIONAL FLOWER SHOP FROM LARGE-SCALE EVENTS TO CHARMING RETAIL DISPLAYS, MCCAFFREY'S FLORAL IN NEW HOPE DOESN'T DISAPPOINT ARTICLE BY ERICA BROOKE GORDON Entering McCaffrey’s Food Markets of New Hope, one can’t help but notice its charming floral section off to the right, but it’s clear this is no typical floral department. From a variety of fresh flowers and outdoor gardening supplies to an engaging retail display of candles, soaps, and even stuffed animals, captivating colors and fresh blooms abound. This hidden store gem can uplift one’s mood even on the dreariest of days. While bouquets of all varieties are plentiful, a closer look reveals “[this shop] is much more than buying bouquets,” says floral manager Gary Scibelli, who has worked in the department since McCaffrey’s of New Hope -- the fifth for the grocery chain in Pennsylvania and seventh location overall -- first opened its doors on Jan. 9, 2020. This McCaffrey’s team does it all, from holiday gift baskets to large-scale floral arrangements for events of all kinds.
“It’s just a different kind of atmosphere,” says Gary, noting that the shop’s busy season occurs from October through May, when major holidays fill calendars. Neighbors have noticed the shop’s diversity of floral offerings. Local high schools, Council Rock, Central Bucks East, and New Hope-Solebury, have sought the store’s designs for prom; so have local bed and breakfasts, funeral homes, and the River House at Odette’s, New Hope’s well-known riverfront restaurant reimagined into a luxury hotel and dining experience. McCaffrey’s Floral is located inside McCaffrey’s New Hope at 300 W. Bridge Street in the New Hope Shopping Center.
FROM THE UNIVERSAL TO THE UNIQUE Gary says the shop prides itself on its variety of fresh, seasonal flowers, from the more commonplace -- roses, tulips, sunflowers and greenery -- to the more unique options of palms, bakerferns, peonies and honey bracelets.
customer-oriented McCaffrey's reliable and creative floral customer service stands out. "We give every customer prime service," Gary says. "It's a more personal experience."
HIGH QUALIT Y, LOW COST The floral department features high-quality, handcrafted work at lower prices than generally found at other local florists, the department manager explains.

Cool Down This Summer With Playa Bowls ARTICLE BY BECKY DIAMOND | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED FROM PLAYA BOWLS
Need to cool down by escaping stifling summer heat and humidity? Look no further than Playa Bowls Newtown for frosty treats that are both wholesome and refreshing – from thirst-quenching juices and smoothies to refreshing bowls with a frozen fruit base. The company's Summer Specials include plant-based Coconut Protein Bites, Coconut Cold Brew Coffee, Glow Bowl (made with an aloe/coconut base) and Mango Pina Colada Smoothie (a blend of mango, pineapple and coconut).
The bowls at Playa Bowls start with a base of frozen fruit, blended greens, oatmeal or chia pudding. Acai, a dark purple berry native to Central and South America, always has been the star of the show, and what differentiates Playa Bowls. Leah Patterson, Playa general manager, explains that Playa Bowls don't dilute acai by blending it with other fruits or juices, allowing the “sweetness of the acai to stand on its own.” Customers approve, she adds, making the Nutella Bowl, made CONTINUED >

from frozen acai topped with slices of fresh banana and strawberry, granola, coconut flakes and a generous drizzle of chocolatey Nutella, the store’s bestseller. Playa Bowls also has its own line of cold pressed bottled juices made from a specially curated mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices designed to boost immunity. New to the lineup this year is the 12-ounce Watermelon Refresh, targeted to lower inflammation. A blend of watermelon, lemon, ginger and hibiscus, it's invigorating with a unique sweet-spicy taste. Playa Bowl’s cold pressed juices also include two 3-ounce concentrated varieties: Elderberry Shot and Ginger Bomb, which can be enjoyed on their own or “added to a smoothie,” says Leah. “They've become tremendously popular.” The idea for Playa Bowls was the brainchild of Jersey Shore natives and longtime surfers Robert Giuliani and Abby Taylor. Introduced to acai and pitaya bowls on surfing trips to Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, they shared the concept with Americans, starting with their home base of Belmar, New Jersey, in 2014. Setting up a sidewalk pop-up stand, Robert and Abby sold bowls crafted from their own recipes and told their story to educate customers on the benefits of acai. The concept took off, they expanded their business to more than 140 stores nationwide, and the company's still growing. Locally, Playa Bowls can be found in Newtown at 2913 S. Eagle Road and in Fairless Hills at 110 Lincoln Highway. Operating hours are Mondays through Fridays 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 215.550.6472 PlayaBowls.com/Location/Newtown-PA

BOWEN'S BARBER SHOP HOSTED CELEBRITIES TO CREATE TV COMMERCIAL TO AIR NATIONALLY
A team of local barbers, celebrities, executives, actors and video technicians walk into a barbershop. While that may sound like the setup for an alluring joke punchline, this really did happen in Newtown recently so a television commercial could be created for U.S. vehicle service plan company CarShield. "This (endeavor) brought big icons to our town. The local support we received was amazing. Everyone's been kind to mention it and be excited for us. We're so proud this commercial filmed in Newtown, and that we're all able to have fun with it. We just wanted everything to be perfect," says Tracey Bowen Tobin, co-owner of Bowen's Barber Shop -- the now-famous 26 Richboro Road location for producing the commercial. "It was certainly a 'wow' moment, thinking this is all happening in Newtown. Definitely a great, great moment," she adds. CONTINUED >

At press time, the 30-second commercial was expected to be broadcasting nationally by early June. When Newtown area residents and business owners saw mysterious tents, extra police presence and a fake street created in front of the barbershop door, it sure seemed something different was happening. But when the likes of celebrities -- actor/rapper Tracy Lauren Marrow (aka Ice-T); former professional basketball athlete Allen "Al" Iverson (aka The Answer or AI); recording artist/producer and songwriter Ellis Williams (aka Mr. Biggs); and American retired professional wrestler Richard Morgan Fliehr (aka Ric 'Nature Boy' Flair) -- arrived, everyone knew something dynamic was occurring. "The celebrities were really into it, talking freely within the shop, and were all big fans of each other. They enjoyed eating locally, and eventually were chatting with local fans," reveals Tracey. She says the commercial came about because the perfect storm happened in which her career worlds collided. "I spent 10 years in TV production, being on big sets in New York or Los Angeles. Then I transitioned back home to help manage and operate our family's barbershop. I was still doing some men's grooming on the side for TV, working with celebrities like Jimmy Kimmel and Snoop Dogg," she says. Entering into the picture was Ken Barbet, a Yardley resident and decade-long customer of Bowen's Barber Shop, who is founder/senior director and creative director at Shadowbox Pictures, a boutique production company. Tracey says Ken envisioned creating the commercial in the authentic setting of a barbershop, and she was "all in," happy to be part of it. "It was a really big deal for CarShield, as well. Several of their top executives flew out to witness it," she adds. She says everyone was a pleasure to be around, and they were able to maintain a nice, calm environment, despite all of the excitement brewing. The staff at local restaurant Vecchia Osteria provided 150 meals to the crew over the course of the three-day filming. Some tasty delectables from nearby Dunkin Donuts made their way onto the set as well. "Of course, now many people are asking which barbershop chair that each of the celebrities sat in. I may have to get signs to designate each chair," Tracey quips. 215.860.2826
