Time For Fresh Starts

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Dana Weissenberg Dana.Weissenberg@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

As we usher in 2022, we're eager and very happy to spotlight the $600,000 worth of renovations of the Newtown Theatre. We believe its role as a community hub and its facelift are perfect for setting a course for a new year. Did you know the theatre hadn't undergone any serious changes for 50 years? Some of the recent key renovations include a new hardwood floor, new vintage-style seats on the first floor, repaired plaster, a new coat of paint, a new fully accessible toilet room on the first floor, a wheelchair lift, a rebuilt front porch, new acoustic tiles in the auditorium and a new sprinkler system for fire protection. Wow! We applaud the entire team and suppliers who made this happen so we all can enjoy it even more now. Newtown Arts Company is the nonprofit, community theater company founded in 1983 that's been performing on the Newtown Theatre stage since 2006. We hear the first production of this new season will be performed in March. Our January edition is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, mental rejuventation and purposeful connections. Being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus this month. In the spirit of beneficial nutrition and choices, we're cheering on one of our contributors, Becky Libourel Diamond, as she's working on her next cookbook. Look inside for a sneak peek at one of her recipes. Please pour a warm beverage and welcome in a fresh start along with the new year and us. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

P E R S O N A L I N T E R I O R D E S I G N T H AT F E E D S T H E S OU L A N D W E L L-BE I NG

How can you apply this to your own home? Think materiality -wall coverings, natural stone, plush fabrics and rugs, artwork that stirs the soul, plant material and spiritual symbols.

Interior design, masterfully done, is the driver that creates mood, temperature and “experience” in even the most architecturally non-remarkable spaces. Even a square box of a room can become something spectacular, something memorable, with strategic interior design. Given the magazine's theme of health and wellness this month, it seems fitting to cover a few pointers about creating at-home nurturing specialty spaces – think yoga or a pilates studio, art studio or prayer room – all in support of greater wholeness and ease. In essence, we can 'peace-up' our lives in creative ways. P R AY E R R O O M O P T I O N :

An Interiors By Donna Hoffman client wanted the rush of water and a soothing space to meditate and pray. Water cascading down a wall is a soft texture in addition to creating soothing movement and sound. The use of tumbled stone, varied plush fabrics and rug adds more soothing softness. Tight color palettes with little contrast resonate with this client. When she asked about adding a cross to the water feature, I brought in a local artist and suggested the strength of metal for this holy symbol but designed it to be open in the center so when the water runs, the center of the cross looks dynamic and life-filled. It’s spectacular in-person, and one of my favorite art pieces I’ve designed. How could we resist heavenly blue? Soft blues with pale creams; sand and sky were intentional choices to elicit calm. How can you apply this to your own home? Think materiality -- wall coverings, natural stone, plush fabrics and rugs, artwork that stirs the soul, plant material and spiritual symbols.

A YOGA STUDIO IN PROCESS: For a yoga studio being developed for a different Interiors By Donna Hoffman client, the ask was for a peaceful sanctuary. Here are three key elements we’re applying:

TEXTURE:

We went for soft, touchable and organic. Note a full accent wall of split face cork; the remaining walls to be wrapped in a slubby grass cloth; plus soft cork flooring and multiple round, wicker lighting fixtures (notice -- no shine, no hard angles).

D O N N A’ S A P P R O A C H T O

soul-feeding specialty spaces My philosophy in design is that a whole home should feed and fill the homeowners’ spirit. However, for the new year, let’s share some shorthand about how to create dedicated spaces intended to provide extra nurturing.

Three Keys And Their Definitions: 1. Texture:

D E S I G N F I N G E R P R I N T:

As we came to understand this gentleman’s design fingerprint, we quickly saw he loves when one design element moves forward in a room, some “ta-da,” in a space. The cork accent wall, with a staggered series of light fixtures hung 18 inches in front of it, and all topped off with a wall wash of recessed lighting indulges his design fingerprint.

What one feels, tactically and visually in a space. In design, your brain experiences texture as much as your skin. A space filled with shiny, sparkly items will “feel” differently than one that is filled with a plush, soft, matt texture.

2. Design Fingerprint:

Who you really are in design, your total cravings and aversions.

3. Color Math:

How different color depths and color combos are experienced.

C O LO R M AT H :

Because the eye naturally looks for differences, we went muted for calm, with little difference in color depth. We leaned into textural differences for interest between floor, walls and lighting. Even the cork accent wall has an intentionally mildly graduated color depth.

Consistent reviews and stress testing are beneficial for helping to keep people on-track to meet their financial goals. "Like physical health, early detection and resolution of financial issues can prevent catastrophe. At iNNOVA, there's no such thing as 'set it and forget it' planning," says William “Chip” Bromley Jr., CAIA, AIF, a principal and co-founder of iNNOVA Wealth Partners in Newtown. "We’re consistently updating and stress testing our clients' plans to help insulate them, even when changing circumstances would otherwise put them at risk.” iNNOVA's financial experts advise clients in planning for retirement, taxes and overall finances, as well as managing investments. They also host signature "roadmap" classes. Newtown City Lifestyle asked iNNOVA how to jumpstart a beneficial financial plan for a new year.

income in retirement, should be done, including social security benefits, any pension income from employment as well as assets in brokerage accounts or other retirement accounts, such as 401K-s or IRAs.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "STRESS TESTING" FINANCIAL PLANNING?

WHEN DOES A PERSON KNOW THEY'RE STRIKING A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM NEEDS?

Stress testing our clients' financial plans involves simulating future possibilities to see how robust their current plan is to economic shocks. Examples would be rising inflation, plus quick or large drops in the stock market. A successful financial plan doesn't simply consider historical financial performance.

WHAT APPROACH DO YOU TAKE TO HELP CLIENTS ACCOMPLISH THEIR FINANCIAL GOALS? iNNOVA takes a holistic, goals-based approach when helping clients accomplish their financial goals. Rarely does a client come to us with one income stream to support one goal. Because our clients' lives and financial situations tend to be complex, we must help them consider all assets and income streams to support multiple goals with different timeframes. Many times, we call this our clients' financial puzzle and the planning is helping them put all the pieces in place.

Everyone should consider future health care costs when planning for retirement. There are steps you can take and tools to use as you’re approaching retirement to help plan for future health care costs, which typically account for a large portion of expenses later in life.

WHAT SPECIFIC FINANCIAL AREAS SHOULD BE PRIORITIZED IN A NEW YEAR?

FOR SOMEONE WHO BECOMES WIDOWED, HOW DO THEY ENSURE THAT THEY'RE FINANCIALLY SECURE?

Each year, clients should review their goals, spending needs and planning around major life events, such as having a child or getting married or divorced. Also, review any milestone birthdays that could affect social security or required minimum distributions. Recently, we also suggested clients review any automatic renewing subscriptions, as we find many clients continue paying for services they no longer use or value.

When we can, preparation helps a lot, as we’ll typically advise clients on life insurance policies to cover any lost current and future income from a deceased spouse. Also, there are many unique financial considerations for a widow, such as determining all the different types of accounts that a deceased spouse owned and making sure they’re transferred and titled appropriately. A widow has different social security income options than a single person or someone that's been divorced. Unfortunately, many couples allow one spouse to handle the finances. When that managing spouse passes, this can leave a grieving widow the stress of simultaneously wondering about their financial security. We try to help alleviate that pressure.

HOW IS ACCURATE NET WORTH DETERMINED? Mathematically, net worth is determined by subtracting any liabilities from your assets, but the importance of a net worth goes well beyond this formula. Many clients forget to include their human capital as an asset (ability to earn future income), which can many times be a young client’s largest asset. Knowing your net worth is valuable, for instance, when a client is approaching a bank for a personal loan because the potential to pay back the bank will heavily depend on their net worth. As a client approaches retirement, their net worth will be key to determining the asset pool they can count to live on and/or the liabilities they must plan to pay down.

HOW CAN WOMEN BEST TELL THEY'RE ON-TRACK FOR RETIREMENT? Generally, women have longer life expectancies than males so planning for longevity is a key focus. Making sure risk management strategies are in place, such as long-term care insurance and an analysis of all sources of

HOW CAN ONE ALIGN THEIR FINANCES WITH THEIR VALUES IN RETIREMENT AND BEYOND? Many clients come to us having worked diligently to “retire successfully," but oftentimes they haven’t put enough consideration into what they want to do with the extra 40-plus hours each week they now have that was spent working. If a client values giving back to charity, community or family, many of our discussions focus on giving a combination of time, skills and/or money. If the goal is to donate or gift monetarily, we strive to help our clients achieve this in the most cost-effective manner. 12 Terry Drive, Suite 203 info@myinnovawealth.com 888.270.1574 MyInnovaWealth.com CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . MVP and More ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

PHILLIES SUPERSTAR NABS SECOND NATIONAL LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD IN HIS CAREER

Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper, 29, became the fourth player since 2000 to win multiple MVPs before turning 30. He joined Mike Trout (with three awards), Albert Pujols (three) and Alex Rodriguez (two). He became just the 15th player in history to win multiple league MVP awards before his age 29 season. Phillies legend Mike Schmidt, who himself was crowned MVP three times, presented the award to Bryce. Bryce slashed .309/.429/.615 in 599 plate appearances over 141 games for the Phillies during the 2021 season. With 101 runs, 100 walks, 42 doubles and 35 home runs, he became just the fourth outfielder in the history of Major League Baseball with 100 runs, 100 walks, 40 doubles and 35 home runs in a season, joining Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds and Stan Musial. The Phillies’ standout player led the majors in slugging percentage, OPS (1.044) and OPS+ (179), and he led the National League in doubles, extrabase hits (78) and Win Probability Added (4.74). Bryce was the National League recipient of the Hank Aaron Award, given annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league as voted on by a panel of Hall of Fame players and fans. Further, he was selected by the Major League Baseball Players Association as NL Outstanding Player of the Year, as voted on by his fellow players. He also was named a 2021 Stan Musial Award winner by the St. Louis Sports Commission in celebration of the year’s greatest moments of sportsmanship and those in sports who embody class and character. Finally, Bryce recently won his second career Silver Slugger Award. But wait, there’s more...

RESET, REIGNITE IGNITE FITNESS LIGHTS UP NEWTOWN

ARTICLE BY JOHN FIDUCCIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TODD TRICE

24

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FITNE S S

IGNITE FITNESS In-person fitness was an industry hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden closure of workout studios across the country quickly brought this business sector to its knees. High demand for fitness, along with low supply, was an economic anomaly. Out of those circumstantial ashes rose Ignite Fitness of Newtown, the brainchild of Chris Lanctot, a local fitness and community-driven enthusiast. A quick and creative thinker, Chris rounded up other area fitness instructors and set up free online workouts to give back to the neighborhood (and national) fitness community, a theme that followed her into her currently thriving business. Chris says a private Facebook group, Viral Dance Fitness, started during the pandemic and quickly amassed 600-plus online members. "Seeing those people's want and desire to better themselves was truly motivating, and prompted us to start Ignite," she adds. Once things opened up and in-person classes became a reality again, she needed to pivot to find place(s) to offer classes. Her business became a self-proclaimed “traveling circus," running workouts in parking lots, on a farm and practically any open space. Members didn’t mind. As an instructor and coordinator, Amy Haas was integral in starting and building the Ignite community, Chris adds. After an exhaustive search, Chris and her team found the dream location: a large, beautifully designed spot in the middle of Newtown. Leigh Ferello, who heads up design and marketing, is credited with turning the vacant location into a usable space in just 17 days. Leigh notes that it couldn’t have been done without the assistance of members, who

showed up to paint, decorate and carry boxes -- the definition of love and commitment to a brand. The studio space, only 30 days in, has the feel, energy and look of a well-established business with packed classes and smiles abounding. Leigh’s saying “don’t be shy, modify," along with Chris’ line “come as you are” are preached to members, who are referred to as “The Tribe." That acceptance is part of what drives the continued success: Ignite is not just a workout business, it’s the formation of fastfriends in class and out. Community is the theme that continues to show up at Ignite. Besides offering workouts, they're busy hosting monthly charitable events, such as the first “Pink Out” fundraiser that benefited Unite for HER, a breast cancer nonprofit. Ignite also spotlights local businesses in social media to help push the 'Shop Local' initiative. Lastly, members, and the community, are invited to various events at the space, including creative painting parties and other ways to bring people together. What else makes Ignite unique to the fitness space? Most providers offer one piece of the fitness puzzle, such as workouts, meal plans and support. Ignite packages it

all and more in the very popular “Ignite Your Fire” plan, run by Kristen D’Angelo, a nutrition coach. “The joy is in the journey," says Kristen, who herself experienced a life-changing transformation that made her driven and passionate about helping others. If members' hectic schedules prevent them from making it to the studio, Ignite offers a tremendous library of classes on demand and livestream for current workouts -- a fusion of workout classes online and in-person offers something for everyone. This has enabled Ignite to build a member base with national presence, including a member from Michigan who flew in to surprise the team at the grand opening. Ignite's social media further proves the community and local aspects of the business. Positivity “shoutouts” to members by name, along with birthday wishes and motivational chatter portrayed in a fun non-invasive way, is commonplace on all sites. They are known for presenting a warm feeling of belonging and friendship online, for members of the Tribe or those just browsing. 36 Richboro Road 215.602.7679 IgniteFitnessNewtown.com

Compassionate Gynecologic Care From routine women’s health to infertility evaluation and gynecologic surgeries, the professionals of Bucks County Women’s Wellness in Furlong, believe in customized care for every stage of a woman’s life. The practice's new location just opened Sept. 13, 2021. For nearly 25 years, Victoria Petty, M.D., has treated women of Bucks, Montgomery and Mercer counties. She attended The University of Pennsylvania for both undergraduate and medical studies. After her residency in obstetrics and gynecologic medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she continued her education and became board certified in integrative and holistic medicine. In 2017, Monika Mansmann, physicians assistant-certified, joined Dr. Petty, bringing 15 years of practical experience in surgical specialties including orthopedic, vascular, bariatric, neurological, general and surgical oncology. Together, they provide well women exams, family planning, PAP smears, menopause management, infertility evaluations, pelvic pain relief, hysterectomies, sexual health, ovarian cysts treatment, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnoses and robotic surgery. These two medical experts recommend the following advice regarding how women can secure a healthier, happier new year: ANNUAL EXAMS: Schedule an annual gynecologic appointment to screen for pelvic and breast abnormalities and cancers.

MAMMOGRAM: Women 40 years of age and older should have a yearly mammogram. COLONOSCOPY: Average risk adults should now start screening at age 45. BONE DENSITY: Women should have a bone scan at age 65 to diagnose and/or assess their risk of osteoporosis. GYNECOLOGIC SCREENINGS: Visit your GYN each year for annual evaluations and screenings. SELF-CARE: Take time to reset after the holidays. Read a book. Take a walk or hot bath, deep-breathing exercises or massage. NATURAL MOOD BOOSTERS: Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting a restful night’s sleep, and taking Vitamin D have been shown to elevate mood. BOUNDARIES: If you're one to overextend personally and/or professionally, January is the perfect time to start setting boundaries and recognizing it's OK to say NO. POSITIVITY: Train yourself to see the glass half full. Surround yourself with people who lift your spirit and accept your flaws. Bucks County Women’s Wellness treats women in their teens through their golden years to offer patient-centered, state-ofthe-art care in a safe, nurturing environment at 2325 Heritage Center Drive, #605, in Furlong. 215.874.4200 BucksCountyWomensWellness.com

Mayra Rosner, owner/operator of Club Pilates Newtown, always was into physical fitness. She came to pilates, however, by “accident.” Mayra was working hard by lifting and keeping fit at the gym, and developed two herniated discs from the strenuous regimen she kept. Her physical therapist recommended something gentle on the body, specifically pilates. She listened and began the practice of pilates that would change her career and life. Mayra got her certificate in pilates and began teaching it. As her children grew older, Mayra started thinking about owning her own studio. The franchise of Club Pilates was a perfect fit at a perfect time for Mayra. In June of 2019, Mayra opened Club Pilates Newtown and quickly followed with Club Pilates Doylestown in May 2021. Mayra loves the concept of pilates for everyone. She says Club Pilates offers this through a price point that’s more affordable than traditional reformer/equipment pilates. She maintained her customer base through COVID-19 by offering free virtual classes. When it was time to resume in-person, an HVAC filter, additional cleaning, and 6 feet spread of equipment helped members feel comfortable returning. “I’m proud we were able to remain sustainable, and even expand, during these trying years,” she adds. Newtown City Lifestyle asked Mayra for tips regarding how to keep New Year’s Resolutions that are hard to remember by the time winter thaws. She says pilates can be that easy-to-follow path on journeys to fitness. 1. Every movement involves the core. Lack of core strength can result in pain in the back, knees and more. Pilates is all about the core. Improvement in all areas happens quickly because of focus on the core. 2. Although we’re creatures of habit, don’t let that fool you. One of the reasons people fall off a fitness program is boredom. Pilates is always new! Different exercises, equipment, and routine help keep it fresh. 3. Pilates really can be for everyone. Because it’s low impact, you can find a routine that works for you and helps you build strength and flexibility. 4. Pilates is a full body workout, so you’ll see your whole body changing fast. This inspires and motivates us to keep going. 5. Partner workouts make pilates social and increase accountability. 6. Pilates increases your confidence in knowing how your body works and helps you feel good physically—which, of course, makes you feel good psychologically. Club Pilates Newtown is located in the Newtown Shopping next to ACME Markets; potential new clients can inquire about complimentary, introductory classes. newtown@clubpilates.com 215.764.5515 ClubPilates.com/Newtown
