HF University Expands Its Bucks County Campus In Newtown Township Holy Family University representatives increased the university's Bucks County footprint by acquiring a new campus site in Newtown. To be called Newtown West campus, the new location at 33 University Drive will supplement the existing Newtown East campus at 1 Campus Drive. Newtown West is a 47,573 square-foot facility sitting on a 6.5-acre site. 'Officer Jules' Retires After 40 Years In Policing Newtown Township Police Officer Jules Ferraro retired after 40 years in law enforcement, including the past 13 years with Newtown Township. He says he plans to continue volunteering at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery as a member of the Guardians, a group that renders honors to veterans being interred there. In Newtown, he frequently read to students at Saint Andrew School, Goodnoe and Wrightstown Elementary schools. Much of his career was as a K-9 officer. Lower Makefield Woman’s Club Welcomes New Members The Lower Makefield Woman’s Club is accepting new members. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, at 11:30 a.m., at the Lower Makefield Community Center. 2022 Newtown Beerfest Successful Again Newtown Fire Association supporters/volunteers hosted the 13th annual Newtown Beerfest, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Newtown Fire Association. Tim Kilgore, with NFA, says past proceeds over 13 years made a significant contribution to the purchase last year of a new fire/ rescue truck, as well as other needed firefighting gear. Congratulations To Council Rock South High Magnificiently Artistic Senior Sabrina Cancelliere, Council Rock South senior, received a perfect score on her AP 2-D Portfolio -- an honor that only 197 students around the entire globe reportedly have received. The AP Art portfolio consists of two sections: Sustained Investigation (60% of exam score) of 15 artworks, submitted in digital format, and Selected Works for Section 2, of digital images of five works (40% of portfolio score).

What Are Winter Predictions From Old Farmer's Almanac? Winter will be “shivery and snowy” in Pennsylvania, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac 2022-23 winter forecast. The publication indicated: Along the Atlantic Corridor, including the extreme southeast corner of Pennsylvania, winter temperatures will be below normal, while precipitation and snowfall will be above normal. The coldest periods will be in early December, early/late January, and most of February. The snowiest periods will be in early to mid-January, late January, and in late February.

Dashin’ Through The Lights! Start the holiday season with a 2-mile run or 2-mile family fun run/walk through a holiday light display on Nov. 18 at Shady Brook Farm in Yardley. The course is mostly on stone gravel so it’s recommended to take jogging strollers for youngsters. This year, they’re having rolling starts every 30 minutes, regardless of weather. The first group will start at 5 p.m. and the last group will start at 8:30 p.m.; start times are first come, first serve basis. Current entry fees are $45 each for adults; $35 for children 12 years old and younger; children younger than 2 in strollers are free. Race Day registration fees are respectively, $55, $40 and still free. Water and fruit provided at race end. High Tech T-shirts and custom finisher medals provided.

Courage to find gratitude each day comes straight from Amanda McCoy's heart and personal faith after a snowboarding accident left her paralyzed from the belly button down during the year she turned 21. Her rite of passage that year clearly took an unexpected turn, made more challenging due to the injury happening while she was enjoying her most beloved sport. Despite what happened physically on Jan. 11, 2018, this Newtown area resident chooses to mentally focus on little miracles that weave themselves into her life. Now 26, Amanda works weekly with Ilene Morris White, owner of Newtown Health and Wellness in

Newtown, to recapture her physical path forward fueled by Pilates exercises and body conditioning at the fully equipped gym that Ilene operates. How Amanda and Ilene's paths crossed after the accident was happenchance. However, it appears another one of those 'meant to be' occurrences in Amanda's life, given that Ilene is uniquely qualified to assist with the challenges Amanda faces. Ilene has 20-plus years of experience in personal training and therapeutic rehabilitation. She graduated from Temple University with a degree in exercise physiology. She is Polestar rehab-trained in Pilates and a PMA-NCPT (nationally certified comprehensively

Pilates Professional). She's licensed in Pilates for neurological issues (a Pilates-based method taught by The Neuro Studio), such as Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke patients and brain injuries. She's also a licensed Buff Bones instructor for those with osteoporosis/prevention. "When I landed on my back that day, it shattered the T12 vertebra. It felt like my body was torn in half, but by the grace of God, I was able to remain super calm," recalls Amanda, whose back is now supported with rods after emergency surgery for a spinal fusion to address her paraplegia. While in ICU and inpatient care for several months, Amanda says she was told by doctors she had a one in a million chance of ever walking again. "It was the hardest experience of my life, but I've never felt so much love from the people around me, so I kept focusing on the positive moments. I tried working with physical therapists, but it seemed everyone was approaching it from the standpoint I'd be in a wheelchair my whole life. But I wanted to walk!" Amanda says Ilene was the first health professional who truly understood what she wanted: a positive, healing environment and ways to regain movement. "My goal was to be independent, content and happy in the present moment. I wanted to learn to be present with my body that felt broken," remembers Amanda. She says the loss of her legs prompted a grieving process. "But I'm really faithbased and trusted that God had a plan, that it was a better plan than I could come up with myself." Amanda cites the Bible states people "will have peace beyond human understanding." She says she knows her strength is not her own, that it comes from God. While Amanda was working on becoming emotionally stronger, Ilene noticed Amanda was bracing and not using her core, or the surrounding muscles, to help stand from her wheelchair. "I taught Amanda using the four-quadrant stability model as well as core strengthening to help her sit upright and to have more efficient movement. She was the first person I

Closing Community Gaps Together with volunteers and donors, local United Way team members and supporters fight for the health, education and financial stability of every resident in the Newtown regional community. "We seek out Bucks County’s toughest challenges. We work with others to develop strategies that will ensure real, lasting change. Then, we tackle those big challenges in a United Way," says Marissa Christie, United Way of Bucks County president and CEO. Specifically, this United Way group addresses four major goals: ending homelessness, fighting hunger, stabilizing families and expanding education. One United Way program that benefits so many people is called the HELP Center, which stands for "Healthy Eating and Living Partnership." It's a collaboration between UW Bucks and two other nonprofit agencies: Bucks County Opportunity Council and St. Mary Medical Center. Penn Community Bank provides generous support for the project. Located in Bristol, HELP is an 8,000 square-foot warehouse, distribution center and “shop” for the United Way's giftsin-kind program. With a commercial loading dock and expansive storage capability, Marissa says the center allows UW Bucks to accept large corporate donations, even full tractor trailer loads, of home goods and consumables. Beginning in April 2020, she says they received and distributed truckloads of

pandemic support from companies such as Colgate-Palmolive, Kimberly-Clark and Cora. Retailers, such as Amazon, Walmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond, regularly donate a range of brand-new items, all of which reach the people who need them most. Marissa says UW Bucks' partners also use the space for food storage and distribution through food pantries and weekend backpack programs. "Each month, hundreds of new people shop with us for the things they need. For families struggling financially, it's a game changer," she adds. FRIENDS, MUSIC, BEER AND A GOOD CAUSE On Nov. 23, starting at noon, is a chance to support a "brewtiful Friendsgiving" with proceeds from the sales of guest taps being donated to UW Bucks for the Holiday Gift Card Drive. This fundraiser at Naked Brewing Bristol, 212 Mill St. in Bristol, collects money so United Way can secure gift cards for tweens and teens. "When money is tight around holidays, it’s often older children that go without," Marissa says. Gifts of any amount are deeply appreciated, and UW Bucks representatives try to give each youth $35 for food and clothing. They will be tapping brews from many Pennsylvania breweries. Live music will be provided by The Dana Collins Project.

With the tax year-end and holidays around the corner, now’s a great time to analyze charitable giving. It’s slightly more complex than one might think, and it’s important to do it the right and tax-beneficial way. Newtown City Lifestyle asked William “Chip” Bromley, principal and co-founder of iNNOVA Wealth partners, located in Newtown, to get the skinny on giving.

WHAT’S THE BEST PRACTICE FOR TRACKING DONATIONS DURING THE YEAR? Always document donations! If you’re relying on an appraisal for non-cash items, save the form or computation for valuing your donations. Tracking donations isn’t just important for non-cash donations. Any cash or financial donations absolutely should be documented in case of an IRS audit.

WHAT QUALIFIES AS TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS? Generally, a charitable contribution is a donation or gift to, or for the use of, a qualified charitable organization. It’s made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value. Unfortunately, time volunteering cannot be utilized for a deduction, but expenses associated with your time (mileage driven, parking costs) can be considered for tax deductions. Some items that could be considered deductible charitable contributions are cash and equivalents, financial assets, clothing, household goods and vehicles. ARE THERE DONATION MAXIMUMS FROM A TAX BENEFIT PERSPECTIVE? There are varying limits and nuances as it relates to receiving a tax deduction for a donation, but one important point is if an individual or couple takes the standard annual tax deduction, then they won’t receive an additional tax deduction for charitable donations in 2022; they must move to an itemized deduction. Generally, if you itemize your deductions, you can deduct up to 60% of adjusted gross income, but some items and donating to specific charitable organizations (certain private foundations, veterans’ organizations, fraternal societies and cemetery organizations come with a lower limit) may reduce your contribution limits. If you do contribute over that limit, you can carryover tax deductions associated with charitable gifts for up to five years. FOR DONATING MERCHANDISE ITEMS, WHAT ARE THE BEST GUIDELINES ON ESTIMATING VALUES? Any non-cash donations should be appraised for market value at the time of gifting. Additionally, monetary gifts should also include proof of value; which might be a receipt from the charity, bank statement showing the gift, or a copy of the check.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DONATING STOCKS? If you typically support charities with cash, a stock donation could provide even greater benefits to both donor and recipient. Let’s say you traditionally donate $1,000 and dip into your investment portfolio to raise the cash. This will likely create a taxable capital gain for you and as a result, the donation ultimately costs you more than the $1,000. But if you chose to donate stock instead of the cash, you never need to sell that stock and create a taxable event. Instead, you give the stock directly to the qualified charitable organization of your choosing and the potential tax consequence travels with the stock transfer. Because Section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations do not pay capital gains tax, they can sell the stock and reap the benefit of the full $1,000 gift while no taxes are paid by either party. P u mpk i n P ie INGREDIENTS • 1 small pie pumpkin • 1 cup milk or cream • 3 eggs • ¼ cup molasses • ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ginger • ½ teaspoon allspice • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • ¼ teaspoon cloves • Zest from one lemon

DIRECTIONS Cut the pumpkin into quarters, remove seeds, peel and cut into small chunks. Stew over low heat in a large stockpot with ¼ to ½ cup water until soft, or place in a crock pot with the same amount of water and cook on high setting for about 2 hours. When soft and rather mushy, drain in a sieve and press out excess water. Beat eggs, then mix thoroughly with milk, molasses and sugar. Add salt, spices and lemon zest, give the mixture a good stir and then add pumpkin. Mix again and then pour into a pie-crust lined plate. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 50-60 minutes. Enjoy! As a worker at LaStalla Italian Market in Newtown, Christina Nelson began using her own money to buy lunch for local police officers as one way to show support for a community leadership role that she believes is too easy to exist as, or morph into, "a thankless job." But she didn't stop there. "Police officers risk their lives every day to serve and protect our community to ensure we all live in a safe environment. I felt they needed to be shown some steady love and support," says Christina, who launched a "Fuel The Force" initiative, which as of press time, has amassed almost $20,000. While on duty, officers of the Middletown Township, Yardley Borough, Newtown Township, Newtown Borough, Upper Makefield and Lower Makefield police departments can eat for free at LaStralla, Tre Fratelli, Colonial Farms and Villa Rosa restaurants. Christina says Tre Fratelli also covers Langhorne Borough Police Department, Langhorne Manor Police Department, as well as Penndel and Tullytown Police Departments. Northampton Township Police Department officers can eat at Gianni’s Pizza and Pallante's Italian Deli, while the Warwick Township police officers can eat at Randazzo's Pizza. These 'thank you' meals are all made possible through residents’ in-person donations at the eateries and GoFundMe fundraisers. Fuel The Force also now supports special events, such as the Shop With A Cop program, by sponsoring a hole at this year's Golf Outing Fundraiser in September.

"The goal is to sign up all Bucks County police departments by the end of the year," announces Christina, who adds that Fuel The Force is now a registered nonprofit in Pennsylvania and is in process of becoming a 501(C)3. "I'm also concentrating on gratitude events, like the Gala I put on in May of this year where 12 police departments from Bucks County enjoyed a topnotch gala all for free with a full dinner (donated by LaStalla Italian Market, Tre Fratelli, Villa Rosa and Colonial Farms), dancing/entertainment provided by DJ Eric Scott Gold, drinks donated by the Green Parrot and Stateside Vodka, and free raffles from donations from a ton of businesses in our area, along with the beautiful event space donated by Rafters Venue in Newtown," adds Christina. She says she also teamed up with the Newtown Athletic Club staff to do another event for every Bucks County police department during which Texas Roadhouse donated most of the food for it, along with LaStalla Market and Colonial Farms. For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”

Add kick to traditional popcorn by incorporating herbs into a butter topping: The following buttery and savory flavor combination doesn’t disappoint.

NE W, TA S T Y S P R INK L E INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (or olive oil if preferred) • 3/4 cup popcorn kernels • 5 tablespoons butter, melted • 2 teaspoons garlic salt • 2 teaspoons parsley (dried) • 1 teaspoon thyme

DIRECTIONS Add oil to the bottom of a pot and melt over medium heat. Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings. Pour on top, and munch.
