vide, starting on page 30. With lasting empathy, we share condolences with our friends at Holland Floor Covering, who lost their beloved patriarch, David “Dave” Hansbarger. He passed suddenly on Oct. 19. Their holiday season will be missing this key person, and the community mourns the loss of a dedicated leader. I'm delighted to share a recipe for pineapple stuffing (yes, to add a light, tropical flair), one that my family looks forward to consuming each year. My late mother in-law, "Grandma Diane," was a fabulous cook. We looked forward to everything she made; however, her Pineapple Surprise was a fan favorite. Maybe you can add her recipe to your holiday menu! We also were fortunate that an area resident also shared her great-grandmother's cookie/dessert recipe from Norway. And we wish

MUSICAL BLISS– 10 speakers standard; get to 17 with premium or luxury package and optional Mark Levinson stereo system.

THE BOT TOM LINE The NX is first to bat in Lexus’ fleet overhaul plans, and looks to be a serious hit, based on strong pre-order demand -which likely will speak for the first batch of inventory due this month. Price ranges from $39,000 to start and $58,000 for the flagship model 450h+, which goes green with the most horses in the NX stable, 302 in all. Giddy up.

The company offers carpet, area rugs, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, tile, natural stone and custom backsplashes. Roger says all of these factors contribute to Holland Floor Covering’s high customer satisfaction and retention rate, which includes "both repeat customers, as well as second and third generations." “As a family-owned and operated company, we understand the importance of people. F L AVO R F U L FAT TI G M A N N THIS RECIPE WAS BROUGHT FROM NORWAY BY EMMA’S GREAT-GRANDMOTHER, SIGRID, IN THE 1920S.

INGREDIENTS + 2 cups flour + 1 teaspoon cardamom + 1 egg + 3 egg yolks + 1/2 cup sugar + 1/4 cup butter (melted and cooled to room temp) + 5 tablespoon heavy cream + 1 tablespoon cognac + Oil for deep-frying Sigrid's Fattigmann / Photo by Emma Falcon

DIRECTIONS 01 In medium bowl, mix flour and cardamom; set aside. 02 In separate mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, egg and yolks. Mix in butter, cognac and heavy cream until just combined. Fold in flour, avoiding to over-work dough. 03 Chill in fridge overnight or freeze for 2 hours. 04 Roll out dough on well-floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut dough into 2 ½-inch diamond shapes. Cut small 1-inch line down center of each. When dough is ready to fry, heat oil in a deep skillet to 350-375 degrees F. Fry diamonds in small batches of two or three. Make sure oil doesn’t get too hot. 05 Once cookies are golden brown, remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar and serve right away.

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

Anna Sarol

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
