Mexico, so, hopefully, you'll enjoy reading about places you've never visited or, if you have, finding out some some interesting tidbits you might have missed. When I think Iceland, I think cold! Looking at the photo of the country's capital, Reykjavik, certainly shows a snow-covered city. However, other places to visit show lots of green and beautiful vistas, to say nothing of the Northern Lights. Stockholm is also in a cold clime, but the gorgeous cherry blossoms photo accompanying the story tells you there is a spring, which includes waterfront dining (even with heat lamps and blankets) and many places to visit–the Nobel and ABBA Museums (yes, you can even sing "Dancing Queen"), gorgeous ancient and modern architecture, fashion-forward furniture and fashion boutiques, an Old Town with cobblestone streets, a Royal Palace complete with a horse parade daily, lots of coffee cafes (the Swedes love their coffee!), and a wide variety of dining. And, if tropical weather is to your liking and surfing and other water sports are of

The season, perched between a bitter, if atmospheric, winter and sun-splashed, if brief, summer, is when residents unbundle a bit, waterfront restaurants launch outdoor dining (outfitted with heat lamps and woolen blankets), and a stunning pastel canopy of cherry blossoms unfurl in Kungsträdgården, one of the city’s most popular parks. Stockholm is comprised of a series of fourteen islands, where Lake Målaren flows into the Baltic Sea, so it’s no surprise that ferries are plentiful, inexpensive, and provide beautiful views. The city’s architecture, some ancient, some modern, is grand, and the street culture lively with bikes, skateboards, along with 100-year old trams. And, many of the subway stations are worthy destinations in their own right because otherwise drab underground walls are brightened with provocative artwork. The city is known for its chic boutiques with fashion-forward furniture and clothing. But, it is NK, Stockholm’s answer to London’s Harrod’s, a multi-tiered department store that has been a must-visit since 1902. The opulent setting provides every conceivable luxury, from handbags to perfume, along with galleries featuring trendy Swedish designers. OLD TOWN To get a feel for how Stockholm earned its place among the great cities of the world, orient yourself with a visit in Gamla Stan, or Old Town, a warren of cobblestone streets dating back to the 13th century packed with cafes and little shops, grand squares and pocket parks. The neighborhood also happens to be home to the Nobel Museum with high tech exhibits that honor Peace Prize winners. There are even resident scientists who help you muddle your way through replicating experiments that led to breakthroughs that changed the world. Stop at the gift shop to pick up “only here” souvenirs, like Nobel Peace Prize chocolate coins. Nearby, the Royal Palace has a staggering 1,430 rooms. Yes, Sweden still has a royal family. They occupy just a portion of the palace now, so visitors are free to wander amid the grand ballrooms, majestic hallways, elegant parlor rooms and marble staircases while admiring historic treasures, including the crown jewels. Plus, there’s an impressive changing of the guard, complete with horse parade and military band each day. Swedes are coffee fanatics, drinking about 864 cups per person each year. Cafes here are woven into the landscape and provide the ideal setting for enjoying fika, or snack time, a moment set aside for coffee, conversation, and pastry like bulles, knotted cinnamon rolls, sometimes spiked with cardamom, or semlors, cream puffs built upon foundations of marzipan.

The blustery arrival by boat onto the quay at the foot of the museum sets the tone. The hauntingly stark space exhibits provocative works from international photographers focusing on subjects that run the gamut from fashion to social justice. Once you’ve had your fill of being indoors, hop a ferry to Skansen, a living museum. Make your way along expanses of rolling parkland laced with winding paths to a 100-year-old funicular, which will hoist you to the top. Here, the modern world melts away. You are now transported into the Colonial Williamsburg of Stockholm with historic farmsteads and chapels patrolled by historical interpreters. This village is paired with an open-air zoo specializing in Scandinavian animals like the wolverine and reindeer. Take a break at the rustic outdoor market where you can roast sausages over an open fire and treat yourself to colossal hand-spun cotton candy. DINING AND DREAMING It’s no wonder the smorgasbord, which, by the way, is still often served in restaurants during breakfast and lunch, was invented in Sweden. The sheer variety of foods available is in this country is a marvel. Don’t limit yourself to familiar favorites like gravlax with lemon and meatballs and lingonberry. EXPLORE THE NATURAL WONDERS OF "THE LAND OF FIRE AND ICE" Known as “The Land of Fire and Ice,” Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and some of the world’s most active volcanoes. Iceland is also the land of light and darkness. Long summer days with almost 24-hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only a few hours of daylight. Iceland is rugged yet beautiful and perfect for most outdoor adventures all year round. A lot of visitors go there for nature, which is completely valid, but don’t overlook the most unrivaled treasure, the people. If you haven’t brushed up on the Icelandic language–one of the most difficult in the world–not to worry, as most everyone speaks English. The people are also warm and friendly and most are eager to share a smile or chitchat. HORSES Equestrians as well as horse enthusiasts are typically obsessed with the Icelandic horse, a unique breed of smallish horses that came to Iceland with the first settlers from Norway 1100 years ago. They may look small, and although they might resemble a pony, they most definitely are not. Archeological digs in Europe have revealed that the horses descend from an ancient breed of horses that is now extinct outside of Iceland, where it has been preserved in isolation. The Icelandic horse comes in many different colors, and the Icelandic language includes more than 100 names for the various colors and color patterns. It is small, weighing between 730 and 840 lbs., and standing an average of 52 to 56 inches high. It has a spirited temperament and a large personality. SWIMMING POOLS The local natural wonder that is perhaps most ingrained in the fabric of Icelandic culture is the bounty of geothermal energy, the naturally heated water that powers our lives and heats our homes, baths and pools–public, as well as private. Since the advent of harnessing geothermal energy in Iceland, the tradition of public bathing has become deeply rooted in the local culture. Locals of all ages and professions frequent some of the hundred public pools for both health and social purposes in order to unwind after a long day or to catch up with friends. The swimming pool culture has clearly established itself, as the greater capital area of Reykjavik alone has seventeen public swimming pools, most of which are outdoors and some of which are equipped with saunas and steam baths. NORTHERN LIGHTS The Aurora Borealis, more commonly referred to as the Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon created when particles emitted by the sun interact with the atmosphere in the Earth's magnetic field. This releases energy, causing peculiar luminous green streaks across the skies, and Iceland is a premier location to see this incredible light show. On clear winter nights, sightseeing trips are organized around this spectacular, though fickle, natural phenomenon. Tours are typically on standby and experienced excursion leaders who are skilled in hunting the lights will lead hoards of people on buses to the perfect location. DINING The most important ingredient in Icelandic cuisine is location. Iceland is blessed with an abundance of fresh water, clean nature and fertile fishing grounds, while geothermal energy makes it possible to supply a year-round offering of fresh vegetables, grown locally in organic greenhouses. Chefs create modern dishes with traditional ingredients, influenced by the philosophy of the New Nordic Cuisine, where freshness and local seasonal ingredients play a vital role. A staple of Icelandic cuisine is fresh caught fish. Some of the richest fishing grounds in the North Atlantic can be found off the coast of Iceland, where cool and warm ocean currents meet to create the ideal conditions for fish stocks to thrive. Try one of the many Icelandic fishing restaurants, and you will understand why the locals will have you believe they invented the thing.

Outside of urban areas, bike paths are uncommon, and cyclists will usually have to share the road with motor driven vehicles. HIKING Iceland is the hiker's paradise. More than half of the country lies above 1300 feet and the landscape is extraordinarily diverse, with large areas covered with colorful mountains, lava fields, glaciers, hot springs, lakes and black sands. The rugged nature has been shaped by the elements to form majestic scenery unlike any other place in the world. Hiking trails in Iceland are as numerous as they are diverse, so trek overviews for the entire country are hard to come by. Individual trails can be examined in great detail at local tourist information centers around the country. Many mountain huts are also available for booking along known paths, allowing visitors to prolong their hikes and explore their destinations in greater detail.

to settle into a light coma, my masseuse rang a low-toned bell letting me know my session was finished. From there, I was taken into a peaceful common area where the sound of a gentle fountain eased me back into consciousness. Just as I thought the experience couldn’t have been better, I received an ice cold tequila shot. That evening, the group was treated to a truly special meal at the resort’s conceptual MESA 1 restaurant at a one-seating-per-night table situated in the middle of a spring-fed lake overlooking the coast. The seven-course menu was as perfect, if not more so, as the ambiance, and each course and wine pairing were so well thought out that I wished the staff, with overflowing trays On the morning of my last day, I decided to tape up my finger and go out on the water again. The surf was small near the hotel so Sergio suggested we kayak around a nearby point and visit a more consistent break called Punta Burros. Everyone thought it sounded like an excellent idea, so after a short ride we pulled the kayaks up onto the nearest beach and paddled out with our surfboards. Our timing couldn’t have been better; the waves were punchy and consistent, and there were only a few other surfers out on the water! Personally, I was thrilled I made the decision to go out, because, in addition to having some of my best rides of the trip, I was able to see a plethora of brightly colored fish and a curious 40-50 pound sea turtle up close. That afternoon, as I ate at the resort’s smartly reimagined vintage Chevy-turned food-truck-cevicheria, I reflected on what a special destination this was, and the cut on my finger would turn into a small souvenir-one earned the hard way, which you form a close bond with and don’t easily forget. 32
