Love of the Arts

s a life-long lover of the arts, this issue is a particular favorite of mine. With feature stories on the Irvine Barclay Theatre and Arts Orange County (ArtsOC), you will enjoy hearing about what is happening with these two successful nonprofits. Jerry Mandel, known most recently as President/CEO of the Orange County Performing Arts Center (since named Segerstrom Center for the Arts), has come out of retirement and taken on the reins at the Barclay. Under his direction, there are some new series to appeal to a larger audience– Broadway Cabaret, Distinguished Artist, Jazz (we would expect nothing less from this performance-loving saxophone player, who entertains at Bayside Restaurant every Thursday) and a Family Events Series. Continuing are the Contemporary Dance Series, Hawaiian Music Masters Series, Festival Ballet Theatre Season, National Theatre Screenings and UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts performances. Mandel is very proud that for the first time in its history, the Barclay has a Season Sponsor–City National Bank. As to ArtsOC, under the nine-year leadership of President/CEO Rick Stein, it is the official arts agency for Orange County and a state-local partner with the California Arts Council. After braving the recent recession, Stein has established a way to serve the community and generate revenue for the nonprofit through consulting and project management. Managing the City of Newport Beach's Sculpture Exhibition is just one example. Its programs, some newer and some well established, continue, such as Imagination Celebration, Dia del Niño, VOICES–The Veterans Storytelling Project, the Creative Edge Lecture, and SparkOC, the nonrpofit's successful online events calendar. Stein has established the Re-Create: Orange County Arts & Arts Education Sustainability Initiative, through which he is targeting new and increased funding from both private and pubic sources. Our travel feature showcases the opening of the luxurious Silo Hotel in Cape Town, which is connected to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the first contemporary art museum in Africa. The museum, due to open soon, will provide a stage for Africa's brilliant contemporary art scene, as well as a much-needed platform to showcase the continent's emerging talent. Don't miss our story on the fifth annual "Priceless" luncheon, hosted by the Global Center for Women and Justice housed at Vanguard University. Called "A Luncheon to End Human Trafficking," the event addresses the complex issue of human trafficking in our own backyard and beyond. Until next time,

Pink Tie Ball is a Great Success

The 11th Annual Komen Orange County Pink Tie Ball at the Paséa Hotel in Huntington Beach was a sell-out and raised $635,000 towards the next generation of cancer research and local initiatives towards the goal of reducing the number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026.

HGTV STARS WOW AUDIENCE The Scott Brothers, aka Jonathan and Drew Scott, are hosts of three top-rated HGTV series, including the Emmy-winning Property Brothers. The twin brothers–Jonathan a renowned designer and licensed contractor, and Drew, a seasoned agent and real estate expert–have recorded two original tracks and written a book, and for their show, titled “The Scott Brothers House Party,” at SCFTA’s Segerstrom Hall, they treated the crowd to a variety of their talents. ick Stein felt he was coming full circle when he accepted the job as President & CEO of Arts Orange County (ArtsOC) in 2008. After acquiring his bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia University in 1976 and his master’s in English from Syracuse University in 1978, he had signed on as executive director of the Oswego County Council on Arts in Fulton, New York. Several jobs in symphony and theater management followed, which brought him to Orange County in 1987 as managing director of the Grove Shakespeare Festival for three years before he began a 17-year tenure as executive director of The Laguna Playhouse. When Stein moved to Orange County, he had joined a number of arts leaders eager to create an arts council after the Orange County Arts Alliance had dissolved. This became an early organizing committee of ArtsOC, which founding Executive Director

When Hall stepped down after 14 years, Stein was asked to take over. “I started with ArtsOC almost when the recession began,” Stein says. “It had always struggled to find enough resources to sustain itself, which was in part because an arts council in a community this size is typically part of the county government and is supported with public funds.” Stein says they continued to struggle through the recession but modified their business model to harness ArtsOC’s core competencies, which led the organization to consulting and project management. “I credit ArtsOC Deputy Director Patricia Wayne at the time with much of our success in this shift because she equaled me in her depth of knowledge and experience in the field,” he says. Wayne left ArtsOC in 2015 to lead a new state-wide arts education coalition.

All event listings are free of charge to Orange County organizations, and there is a companion program offering advertising and marketing services at affordable prices. The ArtsOC twice-monthly e-newsletter keeps artists and arts organization leadership informed of grant opportunities, advocacy alerts, and more. The nonprofit oversees what it calls Leadership Convenings with arts organizations board chairs, CEOs, development and marketing directors and city arts coordinators for topical discussions and networking.

The full name is Re-Create: Orange County Arts & Arts Education Sustainability Initiative, which is a strategic program to advance public will for the arts and arts education that will result in new and increased funding from both private and public sources. Two years ago, Stein pulled together some leading political figures in the community–among them the late Marian Bergeson (former California Secretary of Education), Wylie Aitken (former chair of the California Arts Council), former Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, former Irvine Mayor Sally Anne Sheridan, Newport Beach City Council member Keith Curry, former Mission Viejo City Council member Roger Faubel, and former Laguna Beach Mayors Paul Freeman and Elizabeth Pearson. “I laid out the issues–lack of public funding and the diminishing private support trends,” he says, “and little by little we determined a strategy on how to proceed. We have no illusions it will be easy, nor that it will be accomplished overnight, but we are resolved in our determination to pursue it. Continuing, Stein says: “I am confident over time that we will see some form of public funding for the arts develop and reverse the decline in private support.” Stein feels grateful to be a part of this community, both in private and through his career. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” he says, “and I am passionate about wanting to make sure the robust arts community we have here can thrive in the future. In that way, I guess you could say that I’ve come ‘full circle.’”

The Victorian and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront Co., the developer who owns the site, has assembled the venerable team of Thomas Heatherwick and Liz Biden to helm one of the most exciting openings Africa has seen in years. Heatherwick is one of Britain’s most progressive designers, most revered for designing the Shanghai EXPO UK Pavilion. As the founder of the Royal Portfolio Collection, Liz Biden is South Africa’s premiere hotelier. Together they have created not only Africa’s first dedicated contemporary art museum, but also the luxurious Silo Hotel, which is connected to Zeitz MOCAA. The unique vision for this project is now a reality, as the Silo recently opened. Heatherwick has orchestrated the transformation of the former grain silos on Cape Town’s waterfront into a state of the art multi-use complex. The Zeitz MOCAA project is a nonprofit joint development with German philanthropist, Jochen Zeitz, whose collection will be on display. Upon opening later this year, the museum will provide a stage for Africa’s brilliant contemporary art scene, as well as a much-needed platform to showcase the continent’s emerging talent. 28

When the granary opened in 1924, it was the tallest building in South Africa and played a crucial role in Cape Town’s development. Since it ceased operations in 2001 and has been abandoned since, locals have hoped for a resurrection or repurpose. Heatherwick’s innovative design revitalized the landmark while retaining its historic soul by preserving the original exterior and cutting through the vertical concrete tubes internally. Spanning nine floors, this unique complex will have amazing displays throughout the building that range from the hotel lobby, to the Granary Café, or guest library. Not to mention, there is more than 50,000 square feet of exhibition space that will highlight critically acclaimed local artists. The building’s top floors are home to the Silo, the most recent addition to Liz Biden’s Royal Portfolio Collection. Biden has outfitted all her bespoke properties with one-ofa-kind designs and appointments, so her exquisite artistic taste aligns seamlessly with the Zeitz MOCCA collaboration. The same ethos has been carried out into the hotel’s public areas, which includes a full-scale spa, the Granary Café, Willaston Bar and pool adjacent Silo Rooftop, all of which have quickly become the preferred gathering spots among Cape Town society. While a bulk of the hotel is transparent, below the ground floor lies “The Vault,” the hotel’s private art gallery that will rotate a display of emerging contemporary African artists. Local Cape Town artist, Kate Gottgens, holds the honor of being the first to have her work exhibited in this special space. Many other artists of notable mention have also had their works featured throughout the complex during the grand opening, including Mahau Modisakeng, Nandipha Mntambo and intricate masks of Cyrus Kabiru.

Center (since renamed Segerstrom Center for the Arts), Jerry Mandel got a call in October, 2015, about taking on the job of interim president of the Irvine Barclay Theatre while the board had time to fill the position. Doug Rankin, founding president of the Barclay had retired after nearly 30 years of service, and someone was needed to replace him. “To be honest, I never expected to take on another major job in the arts again,” Mandel says, “but I didn’t know how much I physically missed being in the theatre, and I was hooked.” Mandel, who had by this time carried his love of playing the saxophone into establishing the Jerry Mandel Swingin’ The Standards Jazz Band that had played professionally around Orange County the past 10 years, thought he would only be at the Barclay for a few months, but in June, 2016, he was asked to be President/ CEO for a year, which in June, 2017, turned into

continuing through September, 2018. However, there is a caveat. “I’m getting up there in age,” Mandel says, “and I don’t think it is fair to the Barclay or to me to have a multi-year contract, so we’re taking it a year at a time,” Mandel says. He says of the first few months: “Initially, it was harder than I thought it would be, but with such a great professional staff, it was made a lot easier. And, with the help of board chair Ken Rohl, an avid UCI supporter, we put together an amazing board of directors.” A LITTLE HISTORY

It also didn’t hurt that Mandel had been Vice Chancellor of University Relations at UC Irvine before he was at Segerstrom Center. UC Irvine provided the land and $1.8 million in construction funding to build the Barclay and is still involved today along with the City of Irvine, who contributed $11.3 million of the $17.4 million project budget, with the rest raised by the theatre’s board of trustees. “The theatre does not report to either the city or the university,” Mandel explains.

“However, the City of Irvine does provide onequarter of the theatre’s annual budget, which varies between $4 and $4.2 million, with the rest raised by us through ticket sales, fundraising and rentals.” As it’s turned out, the Barclay was formed as a unique performing arts venue, established as a public-private partnership overseen by a standalone nonprofit called the Irvine Barclay Operating Company, which reports to a board of directors that has local folks on it and representatives from both the city and the university. The Barclay, with its 750-seat “jewel box” theatre with intimate atmosphere and superb acoustics, was created to showcase top quality artists, to provide a superior facility for local and regional arts groups and to enhance UCI’s educational mission, particularly the programs generated by its School of the Arts. The theatre building was named for Richard Barclay and the theatre auditorium for Dr. George and Arlene Cheng, all of them area philanthropists.

NEW DIRECTION

After 25 years, the theatre’s reputation needed a boost, so Mandel says his goals from the beginning were to provide programming that would appeal to a larger audience, to start active fundraising and, most important, to connect to the university. Mandel’s face lights up when he talks about what’s new at the Barclay. He has implemented a Broadway Cabaret Series with such luminaries as Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune and Brian Stokes Mitchell; a Distinguished Artist Series, co-presented with UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts; a Jazz at the Barclay Series with such icons as the Brandon Marsalis Quartet, and a Family Events Series with offerings like “Petra and the Wolf.” There are also a plethora of offerings from all musical genres, from Mandy Gonzalez from the Tony Award-winning Hamilton, “Jane Lynch Sings,” and Anne Carrere performing as the French chanteuse Edith Piaf to Montreal’s Cirque Eloize, humor writer David Sedaris, and “An Irish Christmas.” CONTINUED >

The activities parallel the mainstage programming by featuring artists from various ethnic, cultural and geographic backgrounds.

Mandel is very excited that, for the first time in its history, the Barclay has a season sponsor for its 2017-2018 season–City National Bank. “This partnership will allow us to expand our programming, bring in higher profile artists, extend our community outreach and take our ArtsReach program to the next level,” he says. The Barclay has been an imaginative performing arts showcase from the beginning with its unique collaborative partnership with the City of Irvine, UC Irvine and the private sector, as well as its wide-ranging programming in the fields of contemporary dance, music and theater arts. Mandel seems delighted to have been the person asked to carry on the theatre’s innovative traditions. “These jobs involve public trust, and my job as president is to make the Barclay a better place. I’m passionate about doing that,” he says. Mandel continues his love of playing the saxophone, performing at many venues around Orange County and beyond. He has been a Thursday night regular at Bayside Restaurant for five years and is performing in New York City at The Metropolitan Room on September 28 and October 6. Victims of domestic servitude, often preyed upon by traffickers with promises of a better life away from their often troubled homes are forced to work without pay in hotels, restaurants or family homes; and, likely, subjected to physical harm. Dr. Morgan is recognized globally for her expertise in combating human trafficking and working to end violence against women. After beginning anti-trafficking work in Athens, Greece, she returned to the U.S. and served as the Administrator of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force (OCHTTF) before returning full-time to the GCFWJ. Dr. Morgan's multifaceted approach to running the GCWJ includes the center's largest annual fundraising event, Priceless. The upcoming fifth annual luncheon features keynote speaker John Cotton Richmond, Founding Director at The Human Trafficking Institute and honored as Prosecutor of the Year by the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation, as well as the Outstanding Investigative Accomplishment in Human Trafficking award received from the Department of Homeland Security. "This event was created to encourage our community to study the complex issue of human trafficking in our own backyard and beyond," said Dr. Sandra Morgan. "With the diverse training and education of legislators, law enforcement and key leaders across our nation, John Cotton Richmond is the perfect fit for this event, and we are honored to have him as the keynote speaker at this year's Priceless fundraising luncheon."

The luncheon will continue the tradition of recognizing individuals, businesses and organizations in the greater Orange

County community who have gone above and beyond in the fight to protect and defend survivors of human trafficking. Formed more than 14 years ago, the GCWJ relies on funds raised from Priceless to continue programs that provide training and resources to fulfill its mission of ending trafficking. These funds go toward an academic minor centered on women's studies that support those pursuing careers that empower social justice issues regarding women and children. Human Trafficking funds help with partnerships with local Orange County organizations working to fight trafficking and the exploitation of children. Global Initiatives funds serve to study work abroad with organizations in Italy, Russia, Iraq and other countries. The Live2Free student mobilization team performs safety awareness outreach to high schools and middle schools. Dr. Morgan has also created a podcast called "Ending Human Trafficking" for educators and those in the field of human trafficking. Additionally, funds raised support the annual Ensure Justice Conference, a two-day event focused on equipping teachers, law enforcement, students and community members in intervening when women and children are suspected of being in a high-risk violent situation. Awareness and understanding are the first steps in comprehending the human trafficking struggle. Attending the Priceless event can be a first step in educating oneself with the possibility of greater involvement in the eradication of human slavery.
