lways a joyous time of year, Christmas and the holidays bring smiles to just about everyone's faces. There are two holiday traditions that stand out every year that originated right here in Newport Beach–Hoag Hospital's "Christmas Carol Ball," this year celebrating its 50th year–and Women of Chapman's "Christmas at The Ritz" holiday soiree commemorating 30 years this year. Either benefit, whether raising money for Hoag Hospital or Chapman University, brings a wonderful dose of holiday cheer to its guests. The holiday happenings around town are also significant. You see them featured in our "Enticements Await!" feature and also in our holiday calendar. The granddaddy of holiday events, of course, is the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, this year celebrating 108 years, and following that is the 26th annual "Lighting of the Bay," presented by the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. If Christmas tree lighting ceremonies are to your liking, check out the details for those at Fashion Island, Balboa Bay Resort and South Coast Plaza. And, finally, raves are always due for the Balboa Island Holiday Home Tour and the Corona del Mar Christmas Walk. Our restaurant reviewer Jenn Tanaka has some good restaurant referrals for holiday celebrating. Whether it's the Balboa Bay Resort's A&O Kitchen or The Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar, you'll be right on the bay to view the quintessential Christmas Boat Parade. The Pelican Hill Resort offers a picturesque gingerbread display in the main lobby, as well as Santa events for the children, pastry classes and Hanukkah feasts. Hotel Irvine is featuring a Twelve Days of Christmas menu, and Montage Laguna Beach is offering a plethora of holiday-inspired cocktails. And, if you're a baker at heart, you will love Suzette Zara's Candy Cane Christmas Cake with its Snowflake White Chocolate Frosting. Yum! If holiday travel appeals to you, you will love reading about London, where you can experience the big, bustling international city as it transforms itself into a quaint and charming English village. Who wouldn't want to sing Christmas carols in Westminster Abbey? Parting Thoughts columnist Deirdre Michalski brings us back to the "reason for the season," as she talks about giving to those who have so much less. She mentions the ornament program at Mariners Church, where each ornament on the field of Christmas trees represents someone who needs some holiday cheer with gift purchases. She also suggests taking home-baked goodies to those who serve us during the holidays–the hospitals, fire and police departments, and senior centers. However you celebrate, I sincerely hope the joy of the season lights up your holidays.

The annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights grew into a quintessential holiday tradition for the locals. In 1913, the nautical pageant united the community with illuminated paper lanterns strung on fishing vessels. Today, the glowing extravaganza attracts crowds with expansive yachts covered in millions of twinkling lights. very year, around this time, when the cool night’s air hits my skin as I stroll down the boardwalk, I recall my earliest memory of Newport Beach: my first Corona del Mar bondfire. I remember the brilliant orange and yellow-hued fire as it danced against the wooden logs that crackled beneath. The embers floated into the ether. The charred caramel scent of toasted marshmallows mixed with the briny ocean air. As I sat on the cool sand, I knew in that idyllic moment there was no place like Newport in the winter. As the nighttime ocean air whipped my face, we packed up our belongings and headed to Five Crowns. My loved ones and I cut into thick slabs of prime rib as we chatted away the evening. Orange County never ceases to amaze me during the holidays. The twinkling lights emanating from the yachts circling the harbor during the boat parade, hearty celebratory dinners at Five Crowns, and the holiday festivities at The Resort in Pelican Hill, Hotel Irvine and the Montage give us so many ways to celebrate the season.

A Holiday Tradition Women of Chapman’s “Christmas at The Ritz” celebrates 30 years.

Soon, Dori mentioned it to Hans, and a meeting was set up with Mary Lou to talk to the Pragers about the possibility of a fundraiser at the restaurant. Charlene remembers it well. “Hans suggested a brunch or a luncheon because the restaurant wasn’t open before dinner on Saturday. He said he would make it fabulous.” Hans chose the first Saturday in December for the holiday luncheon, and the first “Christmas at The Ritz” (named by Dori) was held December 6, 1986. With Dori as founding chair, she asked her committee to bring their husbands and significant others to the event. “The month was already busy with black-tie Saturday night holiday

ifty years seems like a long time. Looking back at highlights from 1966 brings perspective. It was the year that cigarette manufacturers were required to print the warning, "Caution: Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health," on every pack. Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” rose to #1 on Billboard charts; the first operational weather satellite was launched; 215,000 U.S. soldiers were fighting in Vietnam. The Beatles played their last British concert; Medicare went into effect; LSD was declared illegal in California. NBC became the first station to televise its entire lineup in color; Adam Sandler, Janet Jackson and Cindy Crawford were born. Montgomery Clift, Hedda Hopper and Walt Disney passed. Here in Newport in 1966, history was also in the making. It was the year that forward-thinking community leaders John Vibert, Marshall Duffield (father of current Newport Beach City Councilman by the same name) and Vin Jorgensen, along with 13 other founding members, created the 552 Club in support of their local hospital, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Their goal was to collect $100 in annual dues from each member to meet Hoag’s then-lofty objective of expanding to 552 beds. Though the group’s formation got off to a tepid start, it quickly gained momentum when film legend John Wayne (who played football

with Duffield at USC) showed his financial support by writing a sizeable check for $2,500 and joined the 552 Club. At the same time, the well-connected Duffield convinced the organizers of the Santa Monica-based “Voices of Christmas Ball”–songwriter Sonny Burke and band leader Les Brown (Les Brown and his Band of Renown)–to bring their act south for an encore performance to benefit Hoag. Several of Hoag’s celebrity supporters joined in the fun, and that year’s show featured Harry Babbitt singing merry tunes and Buddy Epsen showing off his gift for tap-dancing. Andy Devine read, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and John Wayne recited a poem in his famous sincere burr. It had glamour and glitz and set the stage for the future. They brought the house down and, although they didn’t know it at the time, gave birth to a transformational tradition. Those early festive holiday gatherings profoundly and permanently raised the profile of Hoag Viki and Jim Coufos at the 2012 ball. Fast forward to 2016 and planning for the 50th Anniversary “Christmas Carol Ball,” which is being co-chaired by long-time Hoag supporters Karen Linden and Cindy Stokke. Support and celebration will come together in formal black-tie on December 10th at the Monarch Beach Resort. Rumor has it that a few nostalgic surprises are scheduled to take place throughout the evening. A little background on this year’s chairs is in order. First, we have Linden, who is the chair of the Hoag Hospital Board of Directors and a member of the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board. A passionate

advocate for our community, Karen has been a member of the Hoag Board of Directors since 2011, and her service as made a significant impact on healthcare in Orange County. In addition, Karen currently serves on the Hoag Promise Campaign Leadership Council, the Hoag Family Cancer Institute Campaign Committee, and she is a past Chair of Circle 1000 Founders’ Brunch, serving currently on its Founder’s Committee. As a retired registered nurse, Karen’s commitment to active roles in philanthropy, education and healthcare continues with her hard work and dedication to this year’s ball. Stokke currently serves as chair of the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, having served on and founded several Foundation committees, and is a member of the Hoag Hospital Board of Directors. Cindy has been active in philanthropy, serving on a variety of elected and appointed non-profit Boards, including Harbor Day School Board, OC Marathon Board, Commissioner of the Orange County Juvenile Justice Commission, served as assistant executive director of the Orange County Bar Foundation and is involved in National Charity League. The dynamic Linden/Stokke duo has set a new bar, committing to exceeding last year’s record-breaking attendance and fundraising numbers set by chairs Azam and Fariborz Maseeh, who raised an astonishing $1.5 million. (On a personal note, my husband and I were guests of the Maseeh’s for the Ball, and to say it was the most elegant, creative, inspiring experience of the many events we attended all year is an understatement.) The Maseeh’s genuine commitment was evident in every lovely detail, and it was clear that they embodied the rich history and commitment that came before them, as bright as it started 50 years ago. hapman University welcomed its new president, Daniele C. Struppa, Ph.D., with all the pomp and pageantry of the academic tradition at an official inauguration ceremony before a capacity crowd of 1,044 at the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts on September 30. A full week of celebrity-studded events led up to the inauguration to reflect the many and varied interests of Struppa, a mathematician whose renaissance tastes extend to art, music, literature, poetry, physics, and more. Included was an appearance by Broadway star Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr, from the smash hit, “Hamilton”), who was interviewed by Struppa in front of a mostly student audience. A sold-out address by physicist Sir Roger Penrose offered some of the most recent thinking on string theory, a conference on holism featured physicists Yakir Aharonov of Chapman University and Paul Davies of Arizona State, and a conference on consciousness featured Google’s Gopi Kallayil and poet Carolyn Forche. The culminating event before the inauguration was an evening celebrating the arts and creativity that focused on a wide-ranging live interview with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Werner Herzog, Struppa’s favorite director.

ABOUT PRESIDENT DANIELE C. STRUPPA, PH.D.

Dr. Struppa took over leadership as the 13th president of Chapman University when longtime president, President James L. Doti, Ph.D., stepped down after 25 years at the helm to return to the Chapman economics faculty. Since 2006, Struppa first served at Chapman as provost and then as chancellor. He came to Chapman University from George Mason University, where he served in several academic leadership positions, closing his tenure there as dean of George Mason’s College of Arts and Sciences. Struppa was born in Milan, Italy and holds his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park. In recognition of his work, he has been awarded the Bartolozzi Prize from the Italian Mathematical Union (1981), and the Matsumae Medal from the Matsumae International Foundation of Tokyo (1987). He has authored more than 150 publications in refereed mathematical and science journals and books, and has edited or co-authored six books.

ondon is one of the few cities in the world where cold, snow and sleet actually enhance your visit. The city is never as atmospheric (and uncrowded) as it is around the holidays. From misty cobblestone streets by the wharves to tony townhouses clustered around well-planned parks to the industrial-chic of the East End, the city unfurls Instagram-worthy scenes at most every turn. When you visit London in December, you will experience the big, bustling, international city transform itself into a quaint and charming English village. Here are a few of London’s most quintessential spots to visit over the holiday season: The Georgian Restaurant on the fourth floor of luxe department story Harrods, which has been open since 1913, is the epitome of London elegance. Plan for afternoon tea and treat yourself to classic scones, clotted cream and strawberries served with a Pimm’s syrup. Afterwards, take time to explore the store itself, which is never more marvelous than during the holidays, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the food court to pick up

some traditional holiday treats, like a sticky Christmas pudding. Head to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland (from late November through Christmas), where you’ll see the largest ice rink in the U.K. paired with a Ferris wheel, fairgrounds and a Euro-style holiday village with more than 200 stalls selling artisan gifts. This is a chance to mingle with locals, who chug gluehwein (mulled wine) while ticking off their gift lists. After dark, thousands of white lights emerge from the darkness, casting a dramatic glow. Bed down across the street at the InterContinental London Park Lane in the prestigious neighborhood of Mayfair that has the best views of Hyde Park. Here you can do as Brits do and have Christmas lunch at celeb chef Theo Randall’s place, one of the city’s best restaurants, for classic English fare like hearty roasts and mince meat pies. The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Buckingham Place, so duck into the gift shop, which sells high-end knickknacks like ceramic tree ornaments, which, as promised, are “inspired by the Queen’s own collection.”

London has some of the best museums in the world. Don’t skip the Victoria & Albert Museum that showcases everything from contemporary fashion to medieval altarpieces and the Tate Modern, which houses modern masters like Matisse and Magritte. However, The Sherlock Holmes Museum is a Londononly experience, which offers fans of the mystery series a chance to step through the doors of 221B Baker Street, where fictional Holmes and Dr. Watson lived. Navigating Holmes’ study and Watson’s bedroom is an immersion into Victoriana. Of course, like many big cities, Christmas carols are a staple of city life from churches to school steps to street corners. But, if you time your visit right, you may just have the best caroling experience of your life at

Westminster Abbey. Christmas concerts inside this iconic church are free, but you need to reserve in advance. It’s near impossible to conjure an image of London that doesn’t involved Dickens, thanks to his novel A Christmas Carol. You can pay homage to the writer at many a pub, but the 16th century Spaniards Inn on the cusp of Hampstead Heath is the real deal. It even makes an appearance in his book, The Pickwick Papers. Enter beneath a flickering lantern into the whitewashed building to claim a seat in a cozy room with a low ceiling, where you can order a pint and classic fish and chips. Holiday lights in recent years have become one of London’s biggest draws. Wander along Regent Street for the most artistic (with 3-D moving images), Covent Garden for the most extravagant and family-friendly (i.e. a 22-foot reindeer is a focal point) and Oxford Street (where the city actually closes off the street to traffic) for the most fashionable. Perhaps, the very best way to experience London during the holidays is to simply stroll the streets, hugging your jacket tightly, cradling a scarf around your neck and just

wandering. The city is frosted with a dreamy haze. The high roads and the quiet alleys, the grandeur and the humble thatched roofs marry to impart a sense of tradition, yes, but also of wonder. If the holiday season is about cloaking oneself with the spirit of magic, London is the ideal place to do it. f you are planning a trip this fall or winter, and you happen to be a foody and a motorcar fan, we highly recommend that you visit Modena, Italy. This northern Italian town, known for being the homeland of delicious Lambrusco grapes, parmigiana reggiano cheese and authentic (no alcohol added or infused) balsamic vinegar, is also the town of two great celebrities, Luciano Pavarotti and Ferrari founder, Enzo Ferrari. One of the must-see attractions in the city is the Enzo Ferrari Museum. Its building sits on a 25,000 square foot futuristic structure that wraps around the house

where Enzo Ferrari was born. The Museum holds an exceptional display of engines, motorcars, and an incredible visual show. The show, conceived by multi-vision image designer Paolo Buroni, utilizes 19 projectors to build a spatial projection on the walls surrounding the exhibit. Ferrari’s incredible 90-year life story from childhood to pilot of the “Scuderia Ferrari,” and, finally, successful manufacturer, are the subject of the projection. Ferrari’s museum receives annually approximately 500,000 people who are pleasantly surprised by the combination of the car exhibition and visual show.

Under the title “Red Carpet,” the museum is currently showcasing many of the Ferrari models that have played starring roles on both big and small screens. The film and TV industries have had a great influence in our lifestyle. Somehow, they have altered our perception of reality, our aspirations and dreams. For instance, Ferrari, the maker of the ultimate motorcar and symbol of Italian excellence, has fueled for many years the Prancing Horse Legend, providing us with a “world of dreams and emotions.” Some of the most iconic pieces in the exhibit include: the 1953 film, Boy on a Dolphin, CONTINUED >

Even off set, many movie stars have been Ferrari devotees. Some memorable examples are Paul Newman, not only a great lover of the Ferrari engine but also as a driver who competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in a 365 GTB4. Steve McQueen was also an owner of a collection of Ferraris, that are even now sought after by collectors, in addition to Marilyn Monroe and her stunning white 250 GT Cabriolet Pininfarina. Racing, however, comes first for Ferrari, and so it is fitting that the most recent appearance in the Thomassima 3, featured in the films, "The Racmovies took place in Rush. ers," (1955), "Histoires Extrordinaires" (1968) and Other models included in the " The Love Bug" (1955) Red Carpet exhibit are the F430 Schumacher and the Thomassima, an American-style Ferrari sculpted by designer Tom Meade on a 250 GT running gear. These last two inclusions in the exhibit symbolize the Maranello cars that have appeared in some of Fellini’s movies, such as Histoires Extraordinaires, The Racers, and The Love Bug. This emotional and transcending exhibit is complemented by the Museo deo Motori Ferrari, where the visitor can see many of the Ferrari engines. This is located at the workshop where Enzo’s father used to work; a history within the history that enables visitors to understand why Ferraris are such unique cars.

ast time I checked, I have every cooking gadget known to man, shelves of cookbooks and travel guides, biographies and DVD’s galore. I don’t need anything except a million dollars–now that would be really cool! But, as the holidays approach and I have taken care of our important family members, my attention turns to others. I focus on these two categories–giving to those who have so much less and thanking those who are selflessly serving our community. I hope this will also inspire others to consider just one or two of these ideas. Together, we can really make a difference in the lives of others. We attend Mariners Church in Irvine, and they have a great program during the holidays. They put up a field of Christmas trees with little ornaments on them. Each bobble represents a child, teenager, adult or elderly person who they have identified as low-income and in need of some holiday cheer. I wander through the treefilled park reading many of the requests. My family and I make our selections. We go to the counter and they mark down the catalog number and what we are planning to purchase. Then, we go shopping and bring it back to the church the following week. Some folks just bring a check to the 50

church office and let Santa’s helpers do the shopping. That works too! And, for those who visit museums and educational centers, you may want to consider sending a donation on behalf of your family or signing up for a membership, as we do. Over the years, we have so enjoyed the programs & lectures brought to us by Bowers Museum, Discovery Center, Dana Point Ocean Institute and Chapman University. Recently, I have become aware of a very special foundation that is saving tortured elephants in Thailand. My friend and beloved local chef Pascal Olhats and his wife volunteered at the Sanctuary and it was quite special. We can adopt elephants and make donations to help them rescue the poor animals and provide much needed medicine and supplies. The founder was here in October to share her story. When my son was a young tyke, I used to volunteer at his school for the holiday party in their classroom. I would ask the teacher if she had a little “wish list” of items for the classroom that we could help with. Those purchases were very much appreciated. A few years ago my Mom passed away on New Year’s Eve. Yeah, that “eve” has never been the same. As I walked the halls of

the hospital that evening, I realized all the doctors and nurses had families at home. And, instead of being with them, they were here with us at a time of unplanned need. So, bringing a plate of healthy goodies and baked breakfast breads makes their day. Even a few decorations bring a smile to their faces. For our police and fire departments, the same thing. They really appreciate it when the community takes the time to pop in and thank them–especially with treats and a thankful smile. I also can’t let the holiday slip past and not make some delicious cookies. I gather my foodie friends and my sister, and we all bring our favorite cookies and recipes. We also decorate baked cookies (that my sister kindly brings all baked) and then we wrap them all up. We end up with a wonderful assortment. Some go home with my guests and some we bring to the fire, police stations and senior centers. We also bring piles of magazines that we have read and are ready to pass along to our new friends. So, as this wonderful 2016 holiday season unfolds, I look forward to sprinkling some holiday cheer, and I hope you can too. A grateful smile is really worth its weight in gold. We have so much to be grateful for. Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas!
