Carrie Bradshaw said it best: “I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my closet!” This is a silly little quote, but I love it. The coolest thing about STYLE is that it is yours. It doesn’t matter if someone else likes it, it matters that you do. If you know me, you know that I absolutely love fashion. I have my own style, and it is very rare that you will see me without a pair of heels on. I absolutely love that I can create my own style and walk in everyday life like it is my runway because that is what makes life fun! If we all dressed the same and liked the same things, how boring would that be!?! I love shopping at boutiques to find unique items. There's always something for your house, something to wear, a charming gift for a friend (because spoiling others is fun when you know they'll love it), or even a sweet treat from a candy store or birthday swag for your pet. In this issue, we talk about many different “styles”. Clothes, lifestyle, and even how you take your coffee. I love that we live in a city with many different styles. Downtown New Braunfels has a very different style than Gruene, and Creekside has a different style than Veramedi. Those are just a couple of places where you can get a whole different vibe depending on what you want to do, see, find a place to eat, or just kick back with a cold one and listen to some live music. I urge you this September to step out into our community, go to the boutiques and little shops, and explore our amazing town! Grab your girlfriends and do a little boutique crawl with coffee and cocktails in between, or treat yourself to some “me” time and go where you usually don't go to find a new place to visit. Alternatively, grab your significant other for a date night, but make it interactive by drawing cards with ideas written on them so you wind up at a different location for each card you draw. Make life fun and remember that the world is your runway, it's just waiting for you to strut down the red carpet! Cheers!

A beautifully designed home is about far more than furniture, paint colors, or keeping up with trends. The spaces we live in shape how we feel every day, influencing everything from how we gather with family to how we unwind after a long day. Creating a home that feels elevated starts with one important principle: design should always feel personal. That philosophy sits at the heart of Schön Interiors, a New Braunfels-based interior design team helping homeowners transform houses into spaces that feel distinctly their own. So, what actually goes into creating a beautifully styled home? According to the team at Schön Interiors, it begins long before moving in your furniture.

START WITH HOW YOU LIVE

The first step in designing a beautiful home has little to do with aesthetics and everything to do with understanding how a space will function. For homeowners building from the ground up, Schön Interiors becomes involved from the earliest stages of construction, guiding every design decision before the walls even go up. “The minute they sign their contract, they are turned over to Schön Interiors,” Michelle explains. “We have seven appointments set up, and we do everything from the outside, the roof, stone, lighting, plumbing. Every detail you can imagine. Even switches. We decide which switches are white and which ones are black.”

Even when clients come in after purchasing an existing home, the approach stays rooted in understanding lifestyle first. “The biggest thing is looking at the space and really getting to know the people in it,” Michelle says. “Are they a family? Are they retired? Do they travel? That’s going to dictate what things you want to put in their home.” Before styling a space, you should first ask a simple question: How do I actually plan to live here?

DESIGN FOR YOU, NOT FOR TRENDS

One of the easiest mistakes you can make is chasing trends instead of designing for longevity. While social media often pushes whatever is currently popular, Schön Interiors intentionally approaches design with a more timeless mindset. “We really try to be more timeless,” Michelle says. “At the end of the day, it’s what functions and what makes those people happy. It’s not about what we want. You can’t come into someone’s house and tell them all of a sudden it has to be gray just because that’s the trend.” Katy says beautiful design should create an emotional connection with the people living inside it. “We’re not just designing a home,” she says. “I think we truly are contributing to their everyday living. We love walking into a pretty space because it makes us feel a certain way.” The takeaway? A well-styled home should feel like you, not like a passing trend you'll be sick of in a year or two. For those feeling overwhelmed by design decisions, Schön Interiors recommends starting small. Many clients walk in believing they have no clear sense of style, but Michelle says that's rarely true. “There’s got to be one thing,” she says. “I’ll ask, is there a granite you’ve seen? A light fixture? A cabinet color? Just give me that one thing that speaks to you, and we’ll build the story off of that.” That one anchor piece often becomes the foundation for the rest of the design story, creating consistency throughout the home. “Every house needs that one special thing,” Michelle says. “Whatever resonates with that homeowner, it needs to be highlighted.” Whether it is a family China cabinet that has been passed down through generations, a statement light fixture, or a custom-built library of your dreams, beautiful interiors often begin with one meaningful detail.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE SMALL DETAILS

Good design often comes down to details most homeowners never think about. Behind every finished home are hundreds of decisions happening quietly in the background, from tile layouts to plumbing finishes to material coordination. “You only have seven appointments, but there’s a billion decisions to make,” Katy says. That process can quickly become overwhelming, which is why Michelle says professional designers know how to guide clients through decision fatigue before it even sets in. “Decision fatigue is real,” Michelle says. “We know before they know that they’re done for the day. We tell them from the very beginning that we’re going to know when you’re done, and it’s not a problem.” Creating a beautifully styled home requires more than choosing what looks good. It means understanding how every small decision works together to create a cohesive final result.

RESPECT THE BUDGET WHILE CREATING THE FEELING

Luxury design does not always mean luxury spending. One misconception about interior design is that elevated spaces require unlimited budgets, but Schön Interiors believes beautiful design can happen at any price point. “We can give you this feel on a completely different budget,” Michelle says. “Everyone has a budget, and that has to be respected.” The key is understanding where to invest and where to scale back while preserving the overall feel of the space. “We never want anyone to feel like they can’t have a space they love,” Michelle adds. At the end of the day, styling a home beautifully is less about filling rooms with expensive furniture and more about creating an environment that reflects the people living there. As Michelle puts it best, “We’re more into creating homes than houses.” The most beautiful spaces are not the ones chasing every trend or copying what works somewhere else. They are the homes built with intention, personality, and thoughtful design choices that make people feel comfortable the moment they walk through the door. Early in my career, I got promoted to a management position and had to wear a suit every day. But now that I am retired, I usually wear a suit when I go out to dinner during the week. The most successful people want to express themselves, and clothing is a very effective way to do that. First impressions are made before you say anything. You have to develop your own style over time. I've heard it said you have to develop your own brand. My style is my brand.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO'S STILL TRYING TO DISCOVER THEIR PERSONAL STYLE?

Find a good mentor. Someone who isn't necessarily in the business of selling clothes. Do your homework, research, and observe. Look at other people, see how they're dressed and how they carry themselves. When you see something that would complement the person you are, your style, your character, and your level of confidence, emulate it, adopt it as your own.

The boutique property, originally built by George and Hulda Eiband, honors its German heritage while embracing something far less expected: a dynamic art collection woven into the fabric of the guest experience. “We really wanted to lean into the history,” says Jamie, who helped transform the century-old estate into the destination it is today. “We wanted to keep the feel of how the home was intended to feel.” That meant preserving what time had left behind. Original staircases and wood floors remain beneath carefully considered updates, while Carrara marble, vintage-inspired fixtures, and locally sourced antiques lend an effortless sense of permanence. “We wanted people to feel like they were walking into an elevated home,” Erin explains. “Not a hotel, but also not an Airbnb.” The distinction is subtle, but unmistakable. Each suite carries its own personality, shaped by moody paint palettes, eclectic furnishings, and one-of-a-kind pieces sourced right here in New Braunfels. Other pieces arrived with histories already attached. A sofa in the main house once overlooked the water from the family's home on Bainbridge Island near Seattle. Elsewhere, vintage accents from former family residences quietly anchor the space. The result is a property that feels curated rather than decorated. That philosophy reaches its fullest expression through Sophie’s art program, created in partnership with West Chelsea Contemporary. Throughout the house, artwork invites guests to linger, ask questions, and, in some cases, take a piece of the experience home with them. “Not only is it giving the beautiful aesthetic, but people can learn even more about the artist and the art,” Jamie says. The collection is intentionally fluid. New works rotate in throughout the year, ensuring repeat visitors discover something different with each stay. “Don’t get too connected to the art because it can go away,” Erin says with a laugh. No piece captures the spirit of Sophie’s quite like Rhino Wild Ride, the larger-than-life sculpture by Australian artists Gillie and Marc that has become an unofficial landmark in New Braunfels. Originally tucked away in the backyard, the rhinoceros sparked an outcry when it was temporarily removed. Now stationed prominently at the front of the property, the sculpture serves as both a conversation starter and a work of activism. Inside, another unexpected tradition has quietly taken shape. A vintage cabinet, once part of the family's Seattle home, now displays decorative keys left behind by wedding guests. What began as one couple’s creative seating chart has evolved into a ritual embraced by countless celebrations. “Those will stay there forever,” Erin says. Like the art that rotates through its halls and the stories layered into every room, the collection of keys continues to grow, a reminder that Sophie’s Gasthaus is more than a beautifully designed destination. It is a living gallery, shaped as much by the people who pass through as the pieces hanging on its walls.

Courtney never expected a small coffee trailer to become one of New Braunfels’ favorite spots for a morning pick-me-up. What started as a leap of faith has quickly grown into something much larger: a business built on family, thoughtful ingredients, and a deep sense of community.

TELL US ABOUT THE STORY BEHIND BETTY LOU COFFEE CO.

“Betty Lou is obviously my grandma,” Courtney says, laughing as she recalls discovering that Betty Lou wasn’t actually her grandma’s real name. But it became the perfect combination of her grandparents' names, Betty Lloy and Marvin Louis. The inspiration runs deeper than the name. Growing up, Courtney and her cousins would drink coffee milk in her grandparents’ kitchen, where her love of coffee first began. After finding a nearly finished trailer on Facebook Marketplace in 2023, Courtney and her family decided to take a chance. “We really had this ‘now or never’ moment and decided to just go for it. We took a huge leap of faith without knowing exactly where it would lead, and it’s grown beyond anything we ever imagined.”

BETTY LOU HAS A DISTINCT LOOK AND FEEL. WHAT INSPIRED THE BRANDING?

The vision has always been rooted in family. “I wanted people to feel like they’re going to their grandparents’ house—it’s warm, familiar, and somewhere you always feel welcome,” she says. “Everybody loves grandma’s house.” That sense of warmth guided everything from the cozy atmosphere to the company’s updated branding. The newest logo incorporates elements of her grandmother’s handwriting, creating a more personal connection to the business’s namesake. “We wanted our branding to feel more cohesive and personal—something that really felt like us. We jokingly call it ‘cozy grandma-core.’” CONTINUED >

BROWN BUTTER SORGHUM SYRUP

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

1 tbsp. unsalted butter 3/8 cup water 3/8 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup sorghum 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract or bean paste Pinch of sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS Brown the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until golden and nutty. Carefully whisk in water and brown sugar. Simmer 2–3 minutes until dissolved. Stir in sorghum and simmer 1–2 minutes until smooth and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and pinch of sea salt. Brown Butter Sorghum Latte: Stir 1–2 tablespoons syrup into 2 shots espresso and 8 oz. milk. Serve hot or iced.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH CREATING SEASONAL DRINKS AND FLAVOR PAIRINGS?

Inspiration can strike anywhere. “I’m always thinking about new flavors. Ideas will randomly pop into my head, and I’ll immediately write them down so I don’t forget them.” Many drinks also tie back to family memories. The signature Betty Lou latte was inspired by her grandmother’s favorite caramel cake, while the Nutty Betty came from a friend’s recommendation after a trip to Italy. “Mostly, it’s trial and error,” Courtney says. “Testing out a ton of new things, constantly tweaking and modifying, taste-testing, and making sure each flavor is perfected before we launch it.”

WHY IS MAKING SYRUPS IN-HOUSE SO IMPORTANT TO THE BETTY LOU EXPERIENCE?

“We really care about the ingredients and what goes in your drink,” Courtney says. “We wanted to be intentional about using simple, high-quality ingredients wherever we could.” Betty Lou’s syrups are made with organic cane sugar, raw honey, and real fruit purées. “It takes way more time and effort to make everything ourselves,” she says, “but I think you can taste the difference and it’s worth it.”
