Capturing the Heartbeat of New Braunfels in Musical Flight

There is something about listening to live music in an open field where the crowd sways to the melody in unison, stirring the soul. On such an evening in late April 2008 was a night that has been seared into my memory for a lifetime. The smell of crawfish was in the air, carnival bells rang, and lights danced through the night. As we made our way toward the stage in the middle of a grassy field, we grabbed a drink and settled in. What we heard in that next hour was unmistakable; we knew this musician was special and found what would now be "our song."

Fast forward 16 years from my first encounter with those humble beginnings to chart-topping albums, Wade Bowen has had a vibrant musical career. His newest creation, "Flyin," was released on May 10th. But during these past two decades, his connection to New Braunfels has profoundly shaped his artistry. Having been raised in Waco, Wade was deeply implanted in the Texas hill country. After college, he settled in Austin but knew he wanted something more. That is when the camaraderie of fellow musician Cross Canadian Ragweed lured him to New Braunfels. This community has provided the perfect backdrop to nurture his craft and forge lifelong bonds, allowing him to find solace away from the bright lights.

Even with the growth we've seen, Wade still feels the thriving small-town atmosphere. Wade says, "The waves from strangers, the people in the parks, the town plaza, the local bar and music scene, all help make great lyrics and inspire my music." He gets caught off guard by the beautiful Texas sunsets or strangers holding hands as they walk through town. He loves to dream about stories that could be happening in every direction from our fair city and imagine how they will find their way into his music.

The bonds Wade has made through the local music scene have been some of his biggest joys. Including his friendship with neighbor Randy Rogers, whom he tours with. He also has the ongoing series "Hold My Beer." Also, having Cody Canada as a brother-in-law has greatly influenced his career, and he can lean on him for advice. He says, "There is so much talent in our town; it really is ridiculous." Like Drew Kennedy, one of the many songwriters Wade has enjoyed working with. Wade believes that our residents should appreciate how rare it is that we are privy to such talent.

With such talent, Wade created something unique to his previous works with this newest album. His band and he are the best they have ever been, and that magic transcends beyond the stage. "Everything just feels good." He says, and he wanted the listeners to feel that. This album has an energy that flies out of the speakers.

One of the delightfully unexpected hits “When I Wanna Be Wanted” with Hillary Lindsey on this album reminds you of the golden era of duets in country music. The song "Friday Night" plays homage to the Americana lifestyle, and thanks to Troy Aikman, you're immersed in the experience that makes you want to smile!

He was able to draw on the feel-good energy by grounding himself in his local roots. For Wade, amid his musical pursuits, he can find balance in life's simple pleasures. As a devoted father and husband, he cherishes moments spent with his family, enjoying their laughter and companionship.

Whether teeing off on the golf course or savoring a meal at one of New Braunfels' burgeoning restaurants, he relishes the opportunity to unwind and recharge.

In the end, Wade Bowen's journey through life and as he continues to navigate the highs and lows of life as a musician, he remains grounded in the rich tapestry of experiences and relationships that define his connection to this vibrant town. Through his music, he invites listeners to join him on a journey through the heart of Texas, where every note is infused with the spirit of Texas and, more importantly, New Braunfels.

The Villa’s Signature Cocktail for June

ingredients:

• 2 shots Corrido Blanco Tequila

• 1 shot Blackberry syrup, store-bought or homemade

• 1 shot triple sec

• 1 ½ oz fresh Lime juice

• Black Salt for Rim

directions:

Step 1. Combine Tequila, blackberry syrup, Triple Sec, and lime juice in to a shaker cup.

Step 2. Shake well until very cold.

Step 3. Pour in to an old fashioned cocktail glass with ice.

Step 4. Garnish with fresh blackberries and dried lime wheel.

Recipe Notes

For a fun decorative touch, we add black salt to the rims of the glasses by running a lime wedge around the edge of each glass and dipping the wet rim into a plate filled with black salt crystals.

Get fit for equipment.

If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.

On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.

As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

Practice your short game every day.

You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.

Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
