Love.Never.Fails.

As we come into February, where the temperatures actually feel like Winter most of this month, I know (at least for me) I am prone to want to curl up next to the fire and have a big cozy blanket to snuggle with. It makes me feel the magic of what Winter is. If you throw my dog and my husband in there, it makes me actually feel the joy of what life is. Love.

In this issue, we show you all things love. Love of community. Love of family. Love of friends. Love of a pet. Love from the best little town I have ever lived in. There is so much to be grateful for this month and so much to see in our beloved New Braunfels.

I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I absolutely love Valentine’s Day and not for the reasons you are probably thinking. I love Valentine’s Day because it is a time to show love to others. It has become so commercialized, but if you look past that, you will see that love truly is all around. Whether it be love for your significant other, a parent, a child, a friend, a neighbor, a business, that favorite cup of coffee, an experience with someone you care about, or even just letting someone know that you love their outfit while standing in the checkout line. I think this day and this month of love show us that people can be quite loving and show up for you when you least expect it.

So as you read through these pages, remember that the greatest gift you can give someone is the gift of love. Love your neighbor as yourself and treat others as you would like to be treated. That is the ultimate gift. Aren’t we lucky we get to feel love!? Even if it is the smallest little thing that makes us feel loved and joy, that is what is so beautiful to see.

I hope this month you all have a little more pep in your step and throw love around like confetti. If we can do this, New Braunfels would be the most loving city, and how cool would that be?! Cheers!

LOVE GrowsLOCAL

T Bar M’s 45-year commitment to families and faith

T Bar M has been part of New Braunfels for a long time, and this year the camp turns 45. What began in 1981 as a small place for families to find rest and fun in the outdoors has grown into a community with camps for kids, teens, and whole families to deepen their connection with God and with each other. Over the years, T Bar M has kept its core mission: to present Jesus, teach His ways, and help people draw closer to God. That steady focus has provided guidance while keeping the heart of the camp the same.

Walk into a T Bar M week, and you will notice a few things right away. Staff and volunteers work hard to help campers set aside screens and distractions so they can focus on relationships. As John MacDonald, President of T Bar M, put it, campers are encouraged to “unplug” so they can build friendships “shoulder to shoulder” and deepen their walk with God. That mix of serious faith and real joy is what campers and families keep coming back for. As Kelli Boyd, Director of Alumni and Engagement, often reminds the team, if there is a fun way to do something, they choose it. Their #1 rule is "Don't Waste Fun."

Access matters at T Bar M. John and the rest of the team believe money should not keep kids and teens from coming. To lower that barrier, they run a campership program, funded by the community. Last year, the community raised about $190 thousand, helping 250 youth attend camp who otherwise might not have been able to go. After a sponsored stay, campers write thank-you notes and send a photo to their sponsor.

Kelli shared how “one very well-written letter” sent to their sponsor resulted in their sponsor supporting their camp stays year after year. Even after the youth ages out of camp, the community continues to support kids being able to come and experience a truly life-changing experience. Those moments show how giving is personal, not anonymous.

Community support goes beyond checks. People pitch in with hands-on work, training, and regular gifts. Many of the camp’s counselors, called coaches, are local teens and college students who grew up at T Bar M. That local love keeps the camp tied to our beautiful community. Families, churches, and local businesses also help through one-time gifts, monthly support, and by volunteering during busy weeks. Those steady acts of care keep doors open and help the camp keep costs fair for families.

This anniversary year is also a year of growth. T Bar M is moving forward on a major expansion that will let more families come and stay. A 20-acre parcel was sold to the camp by a local family who felt strongly that this gift was God’s call for the land. That extra acreage will let the camp expand its family program, add cabins and common spaces, and offer more weeks for their family camp program. The expansion effort shows the plan in numbers. The first phases total more than 30 million dollars in work. John said, “God has provided $23 million of that,” which places the project well on its way. “But what we are more excited about is the porches and fields where families can unplug to reconnect.”

...if there is a fun way to do something, they choose it. Their #1 rule is “Don’t Waste Fun.”

Those funds are already shaping the future. Work includes a new dining hall, a water feature, and open fields where families can play and pray together. Future phases include a ropes course, a sports center, and an outdoor space for worship. The hope is practical. These additions give families more time and space to talk about faith, to rest, and to return to daily life with fresh energy.

The camp is using its 45th anniversary to invite the community to join its Team 1981 initiative. Landing 1,981 monthly donations to the Today program means more camperships and more kids being able to experience the wonder.

What stands out in every conversation with the team is humility. John keeps returning to a simple pair of rules. “Love God and love each other.” Kelli went on to emphasize “each other,” meaning each person who walks through the gate. The camp’s leadership says the goal is not only to operate as a formal ministry. They describe their work as living out a discipleship model that flows into churches, neighborhoods, and the community. The result is a steady stream of people who carry lessons learned at camp into daily life.

T Bar M’s 45th year is a reminder that a faithful little idea, creating a place for families to rest, play, and grow in faith, can become a lasting gift for a whole community. The camp is ready to welcome more families, strengthen more faith, and keep the fun and purpose alive for another generation.

“T Bar M’s 45th year is a reminder that a faithful little idea, creating a place for families to rest, play, and grow in faith, can become a lasting gift for a whole community.”

BECAUSE.

CHOCOLATE.

Chocolate Fondue

• 2 cups heavy cream

• 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut)

• 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

• 1 tablespoon brandy

• Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice!

Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional).  Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

The Spiked Jones

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1/4 cup whole coffee beans

• 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped

• 2 tablespoons Kahlua

• 1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar

• 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners” sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served “dinner” early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

HOW PEOPLE IN NEW BRAUNFELS SHOW LOVE EVERY DAY

ALL THE WAYS WE LOVE

HOW DO YOU SHOW LOVE?

Has anyone ever asked you about your love language, and you weren’t sure how to respond? If so, you are not alone. Many people express care in different ways, and understanding those differences can deepen relationships, strengthen connections, and help us feel more seen and appreciated overall.

KAYLEE

Kaylee shared that her favorite way to show love is through "quality time for myself and the people I love. Spending time with them." She also shared that quality time is one of the "best relationship-building" things to do.

BRANDY

Deviating from the quality time love language, Brandy describes herself as a hugger. "I'm a true Southerner, we're huggers." Before diving in for the hug, Brandy reads your energy. If you're open to it, she's going to show she cares with a hug.

JOEL

"It's not the grand gestures, but the countless small moments that accumulate over time." Joel goes on to share that it's doing the little things to help make the day just a little bit easier for everyone. "Some days, you pick up a sock, and even that simple act is seen and appreciated. There are so many little things."

ARIANA

Having three brothers means sharing time. Ariana likes to "slow down and just enjoy each other," whether that's through sitting down and watching a movie together or just being present in the moment. One-on-one time, she goes on to say, means a lot.

TK

Blending quality time and acts of service, TK talks about how he enjoys cooking with his partner. Not only is it quality time, but one person isn't left to do a task alone. "It makes everything easier, smoother. She'll do most of the cooking, and I'll do all the cutting, chopping, peeling, and dicing. Then we both clean up.

AMY

Please let us help explain what the five love languages are:

1. Acts of Service: Would be helpful deeds, like doing something helpful for others. This might mean small tasks like doing the dishes, laundry, going grocery shopping, or washing the car.

2. Receiving Gifts: Thoughtful tokens such as your favorite perfume, the piece of cheesecake you have been wanting to buy, a nice pair of earrings, or even a chair are some items that would be very nice to have.

3. Words of Affirmation: Are verbal praise, such as, “You look beautiful today!” “I appreciate you so much!” “I am so lucky I have you in my life!”  “You are so smart!”

4. Physical Touch: This is affectionate contact, such as hugs or holding hands. It can also be a comforting squeeze of the shoulder or just snuggling under a warm blanket.

5. Quality Time: This would be undivided attention to a loved one. This would be something such as dinner without phones or a day at the park with your kids without gadgets.

We decided to ask some people around New Braunfels what their favorite way to show love was. Here are some of the beautiful, thoughtful, and heartfelt answers we heard:

Staying in tune with her partner's needs, Amy describes the way she shows love as "a rotating love language." Quality time might mean doing something together or simply doing stuff in the same room. If someone does something, even as small as making a cup of coffee in the morning, she is sure to acknowledge that act of love.

QUEST FOR THE BEST CLUB SANDWICH

ARTICLE BY KELLY SHEARING

If you’ve spent any time in the “Everything New Braunfels” Facebook group, chances are you’ve come across Jack’s lively posts about the town’s best club sandwiches (and espresso martinis). What started as a simple question turned into a full-blown community quest, complete with rankings, debate, and loyal followers eagerly awaiting the next review.

We sat down with the couple to talk about how it all started, the sandwiches that made the top of their list, and what’s next (if you don’t already know).

Jack and Dorothea with Seth & Lindsey Holmbeck, owners of 46 Catering & Café
“PEOPLE TELL ME MY REVIEWS MAKE THEIR WEEKENDS — SEEING HOW INVESTED EVERYONE IS MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT.” - JACK

HOW DID THIS WHOLE CLUB SANDWICH QUEST BEGIN?

Jack: Honestly, it just came to me one day. I was sitting in my office, craving a club sandwich, and I hadn’t had one in years. So I posted in Everything New Braunfels asking who had the best one in town. The response was wild. Twenty suggestions right off the bat. I thought, “Okay, now what?”

Dorothea: We love eating out anyway, and there were all these restaurants we’d been meaning to try. So when Jack said, “Let’s do a quest,” I was all in.

WHY CLUB SANDWICHES?

Jack: I grew up in New Jersey, and I’ll tell you, nobody makes sandwiches like they do up there. It’s the bread. Always the bread.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST STOP?

Jack: Pat’s Place. It had been about twenty or thirty years since we’d been there, and I figured it was a good place to kick things off. I wrote a little review afterward. Just something fun. The response blew me away.

People were commenting, debating, and sharing their favorite spots. That’s when I realized how passionate folks are about their restaurants. It took off from there, and suddenly, I had followers waiting for the next review.

YOU’VE GOTTEN QUITE THE LOCAL FOLLOWING. WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE CONNECT WITH?

Jack: I try to keep it personal. I reply to every comment and always use people’s names. It makes it feel like a conversation, not just a post. I’ve had people tell me they look forward to my reviews every weekend. One lady even said I make her weekends. That kind of feedback means a lot.

Dorothea: It’s also brought us back to places we already loved. Going specifically for a sandwich gave us a whole new perspective. It’s been fun rediscovering the town together.

WHAT WERE YOUR TOP THREE CLUBS IN NEW BRAUNFELS?

Jack and Dorothea starting the next quest

Jack: Number one, hands down, was 46 Catering & Café. We heard about it through a comment. Someone said they only served the club occasionally, so we went the week they had it. I rated it a 9.2 or 9.4. I said it would’ve been higher if it was on the regular menu. A week later, it became a regular menu item because of me! That was a pretty cool moment.

Dorothea: People started messaging us, saying they went just to try it because of his post. That was neat to see.

Jack: Number two was Wildflower. It wasn’t a traditional club. No pickle spear. But the flavor and the whole experience were amazing. And number three, of course, was Pat’s Place. It had that perfect New Jersey tavern feel.

YOU’VE ALSO HAD A FEW CONTROVERSIAL REVIEWS, RIGHT?

Jack: Oh yeah. Tavern on Castell. Great vibe, great food, but the club wasn’t what I’d call an authentic club. I said that in my post, and people let me have it!

WHAT’S NEXT ON THEQUEST LIST?

Jack: Espresso martinis. I know, it’s a big jump from sandwiches, but we wanted to mix things up. When I announced it, the response was huge. Everyone had a recommendation.

Dorothea: We’re excited to explore that one. Everyone’s in the mood for cozy food and good drinks.

From craving one sandwich to sparking a community conversation, Jack and Dorothea have found a delicious way to connect with New Braunfels. Whether it’s a club sandwich or an espresso martini, their quest isn’t just about food. It’s about fun, connection, and celebrating the flavors of New Braunfels one bite at a time, with the community leading the way.

DIS COVER THE VALAIS REGION OF SWITZERLAND, WHERE ALPINE TRAILS, THERMAL SPRINGS, AND LOCAL TRADITIONS CREATE RESTORATIVE TRAVEL.

AN ALPINE ESCAPE

In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

A CAR-FREE ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA

An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely car-free, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets.

One of the main attractions of the ski-in/ski-out area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.

WHERE TO STAY

Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.

Take in sweeping alpine views across Switzerland’s Valais region.

WHAT TO DO

Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-yearold forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn.

Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-foot-long suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier.

Goms Bridge over Rhone River.

THERMAL WATERS AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS IN LEUKERBAD

After miles of hiking in the Aletsch Arena, it is time to relax and recharge in the mountain village of Leukerbad.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Restaurant Quellenhof Leukerbad is steps away from many of the area’s best thermal pools. The hotel also has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with several regional specialties.

WHAT TO DO

Since the 1500s, the area has been a well-known destination for wellness and healing due to over 65 natural hot springs that

flow into the alpine village. Several public bathhouses welcome visitors year-round, including Leukerbad Therme, the largest thermal wellness resort in Europe. The family-friendly wellness center includes ten pools and a range of hot and cold plunge options. Walliser Alpentherme & Spa and Therme 51 also offer public access to the mineral-rich waters.

A hike through Dala Gorge provides beautiful mountain views while traversing a 2,000-foot suspension bridge over the Dala River. Hikers can also experience a 100-foot waterfall before the forested hiking trail leads back to Leukerbad.

The village is considered one of the most traditional and beautiful alpine settings in the country. It lacks the pretentiousness of Switzerland’s larger metropolitan areas and offers a storybook atmosphere with a friendly small-town feel. Walking through

The footbridge of the Leukerbad thermal springs (Dala gorge) during fall.

Leukerbad reveals gorgeous chalets, small shops, bakeries, and restaurants worth exploring.

WHERE TO EAT

No trip to Switzerland is complete without fondue. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, fondue, which translates to “melt” in French, is a national dish consisting of a blend of Gruyere and Emmental cheeses. One of the oldest family-owned restaurants in Leukerbad, Restaurant Sternen offers traditional fondue along with a variety of mix-ins and dipping options. Pair the fondue with Valais wine for a celebratory meal. Restaurant Waldhaus is one of the most elevated restaurants in the village and is another family-run establishment offering a seasonal menu and over 70 different grappas to choose from.

HISTORY AND ALPS MEET IN MARTIGNY

A short train ride takes visitors to one of the largest cities in the Valais region of Switzerland. The city is a crossroads between Italy and France, with a history dating back to Roman times. Visitors can tour Roman ruins, including a well-preserved amphitheater, ancient settlements, and Roman baths.

WHERE TO STAY

Martigny Boutique Hotel is minutes from the train station and is one of the few establishments in the city employing people with disabilities. The light and bright hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the city.

WHAT TO DO

Take the steepest funicular in the world, the Mont-Blanc Express, on a scenic ascent through the Alps. The funicular connects to a smaller train that leads to the Trient Valley on the French-Swiss border, where, at the top, a full day of activity begins. Hiking, biking, zip-lining, or traversing the Emosson Dam, which straddles France and Switzerland, are all options. The crystal clear blue waters of Emosson Lake are perfect for a picnic or a break between adventures.

Back in Martigny, Barryland, the only theme park in the world dedicated to St. Bernard dogs, offers a look at the history of the dog, bred by monks in the 17th century for alpine rescue work. The Barry Foundation, founded in 2005, continues to preserve the breed and educate visitors about it. Guests can watch the dogs train, play, and interact as they learn about their role in the region.

Roman influence remains visible across the city, including at Les Bains Publics at Hotel Borsari, where visitors can soak in cement wine barrels located in the hotel’s spa. The baths sit on the site of a former wine tank factory and offer a circuit of hot and cold pools in a historically inspired, wine-colored setting.
