How Do You Invest?

Investing. When someone comes up to you and asks you what you invest in, most of us automatically go to financial investments. While that is great, and we do highlight it in this issue, investments can mean many different things. What would you say is your biggest investment in life? Marrying your best friend? Having a child? Building that dream home? Joining a church that completely transforms your life for the better?

When looking at things that mean so much for us as humans, we need to look at it not as we MUST do this, but we GET to do this. I think where we go wrong in life is trying to do all the things perfectly. When we focus on investing in our family, our finances, our health, our mentality, our community, and our spiritual life, it makes life fuller with a sense of belonging and purpose.

I absolutely love this issue. I love that we talk with some amazing companies around our community on how to do some practical investments that everyone will need: finances, cars, insurance, and other necessary things in life. However, don’t forget that when you do the small things to invest, they add up to a bigger picture and a life well lived.

This month, remember to see a different perspective. You don’t have to come up with $100,000 tomorrow, be your perfect weight, have the perfect family, find your soul mate, save enough to send your kids to college, or build that dream home. Become 1% better each day and contribute just a little each day or week, and those efforts will automatically trickle down into your investments. Cheers!

Investing in the Drive Ahead

HOW MAACO AUTO BODY SHOP & PAINTING HELPS OWNERS PRESERVE VALUE AND PROTECT THEIR RIDE.

In New Braunfels, investing in your car can mean many things. For some, it is a simple refresh to keep a daily driver looking sharp. For others, it is a full restoration that brings family history back to life. At Maaco Auto Body Shop & Painting, the team helps customers decide what that investment should look like and how far they want to go.

“Cars today in the U.S. are the oldest they've ever been that are on the road,” said Stan Piernick, owner of New Braunfels Maaco. “Twelve years is the average age of a car.” That reality shapes many of the conversations that happen inside the shop.

When someone pulls in and says they are not sure what they need, the first step is clarity. “When you look at your car, the question you have to ask yourself is: Is it my daily driver that I just want to get one to three years out of it? Is it something I want to turn into an heirloom? Or is it just something that I want to extend the useful life five to seven years?”

From there, the options open up. A light refresh can make a vehicle “pretty shiny,” as Stan puts it, and ready for resale. A deeper investment can mean every dent removed, parts replaced, and a finish that holds up for years. And sometimes, the goal is even more personal. “We can turn it into what you want to be buried in,” he said with a smile. “Because I've had a couple of trucks where it's like, ‘I am going to be buried in this thing.’”

The shop walks customers through the process in plain terms. No matter which paint package a customer chooses, the prep is the same. “It's going to be sanded down. It's going to be sealed,” Stan explained. The difference comes in the finish and the long-term care. Older paint systems required frequent waxing. Modern finishes offer more depth and durability, yet require a good paste wax annually. Consider wax, sunscreen for your car.

Seeing the work in progress often makes the decision easier. Customers can walk through the body area where dents are repaired and into the prep space where trucks are masked and primed. The team shows them what is possible and lets them choose how far to go.

That approach extends beyond paint. Insurance claims can be stressful, and the team takes much of that burden off the customer’s shoulders. “The hardest part is making the claim,” Stan said. “We do everything else after that point on your behalf.” From negotiating for proper parts to handling hidden damage that appears once a vehicle is opened up, the shop stands in the gap so owners do not have to.

While some jobs are large-scale restorations, others are small acts of service that mean just as much. Ralph, the General Manager who often greets customers at the front, sees both ends of that range.

When a classic rolls in, the vision is usually clear. “When it makes it to our front door, it has come to a point already with the customer that they've already decided that they've done enough that they can do,” Ralph said. “We kind of just finish it for them.” Many of those projects carry decades of history.

One memorable project was a 1965 Mustang that had been in the same family since it was purchased new. “It had stories in every panel,” Ralph recalled. They uncovered layers of old repairs and hidden damage, including evidence of an unfortunate run-in with a cow decades earlier. “You don’t see that every day,” Ralph laughed. “But that’s part of the fun. Every car has a past.”

Another long-term build involved a rusted truck that had traveled the world with its owner during his military service. It took a year and a half of welding, sourcing parts, and steady updates. When it was complete, the owner said he had not seen his grandfather’s truck look that way since he was a kid. He was, in Ralph’s words, “a little kid again” when he picked it up.

Yet not every meaningful moment involves a full restoration. Some happen in the parking lot. Ralph described the relief of a driver who believes a small issue is catastrophic, only to learn it can be fixed in minutes.

“Hang out inside, grab a cup of coffee, give me about ten, fifteen minutes, and I can fix it for you,” he tells them. Often, the response is disbelief. Then gratitude.

That spirit is part of the culture across the shop floor. The team invests in training and experience. One lead technician has been shaping metal since 1973. He studies a damaged panel in silence before touching it, then works with a level of skill that still amazes younger techs. Experience matters. So does integrity.

For anyone thinking about investing in their car, the advice is steady and direct. “Do your research,” Stan said. “Don't become the expert on the how. Become an expert on the where.” Visit shops. Ask for tours. Read reviews. Look for certifications. Make sure the place you choose stands behind its work.

In the end, investing in a car is about more than paint and panels. It is about preserving value, protecting safety, and sometimes honoring a memory. Whether it is a quick repair that gets someone back on the road or a year-long restoration that revives a family heirloom, the goal remains the same. Help people move forward with confidence and pride in what they drive.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

How Huddleston & Company turns insurance coverage into confidence

SECURING YOUR FUTURE

In downtown New Braunfels, Huddleston & Company stands as more than an insurance office. It is a place where families and business owners learn how to protect what they have worked hard to build. For David, that has always been the point. David’s path into the business was not polished. He paid his own way through school at Southwest Texas while tending bar at a packed local spot. A life and health agent recruited him right out of the bar.

One of the greatest influences in his life was a local legend, Carroll Hoffmann. “I can never repay him,” David said. Carroll taught him to build income by doing what was right. He also taught him to ask thoughtful questions and pay attention to the answers.

By 1991, David owned the property and casualty portion of the agency. Growth followed, not because he chased it, but because he stayed steady. Longstanding families and business owners began to trust him with major accounts. In 2023, he purchased two local agencies, expanding the firm’s reach in both personal and commercial lines. The move brought new carriers and more staff. It also reduced dependence on any one person. David was clear about his goal. The expansion was about longterm strength.

At its core, the agency helps people move from reaction to intention. David often tells clients that if they have something worth protecting, they should protect it well. He sees too many people shop for the lowest price without asking what will happen at the time of a claim. He speaks plainly about underinsured buildings and overlooked risks.

“Too many in this business pay attention to delivering the cheapest price at the time of inception, without worrying about what's going to happen at the time of claim,” he said.

During the COVID shutdowns, many business owners finally had time to review their policies. David met with them one by one. 75% left his office, spending more than when they walked in. Why? Because they saw gaps. They understood that a few extra dollars each month could mean survival after a fire, a storm, or a lawsuit.

One of David’s favorite client stories proves the point. He once received a call while out of town. A client’s home had burned to the ground. The owner believed he had insured it for $350,000 and feared he would never rebuild. David remembered the conversation from years before. The client had wanted a lower amount. David pushed him higher.

CONTINUED >

“When you help people, you get paid. There’s a certain satisfaction in knowing you protected what they worked so hard to build.”

“We recently wrote him a check for five hundred and ninety-one thousand dollars,” David said.

That check gave the homeowner the chance to rebuild without draining savings or selling land. The payout protected his plans and preserved his capital. That is what investing in protection looks like in real life.

David also encourages clients to think beyond the structure itself. He asks about deductibles, liability limits, business interruption, and replacement costs. He has seen ten-million-dollar buildings insured for a fraction of their value. He has met ranchers with thriving online meat operations who had no product liability coverage. When he finds gaps, he does not scold. He explains. Then he lets clients decide.

The agency’s approach is hands-on. David still drives out to properties across the county. He recently stood in the middle of 11,000 acres to inspect a one-bedroom home with soaring ceilings. The next day, he toured a smaller ranch in Dale where Wagyu cattle grazed, and beef was sold online. Photos and satellite views do not tell the whole story. Seeing the land helps him write better coverage.

That same care extends to everyday details. The office still sends personal notes. They laminate insurance cards even though digital copies exist. They address transactions directly, even

when the carrier has already sent notice. These steps build confidence and clarity. They remind clients that someone is watching out for them.

David’s investment in the future also includes his staff and New Braunfels. He has served as president of the New Braunfels Lions Club and worked through leadership roles connected to Wurstfest. He has been active with the local Chamber of Commerce and other civic groups. Carroll once gave him simple advice. When you dip out of the community’s bucket, you need to put water back in it. David took that to heart.

Wurstfest, in particular, taught him about risk and preparation. Security, planning, and financial reserves all matter when you gather thousands of people in one place. The same principle applies to families and businesses. Preparation is not fear. It is wisdom.

David is also disciplined in his own routine. “I attack Mondays with a vengeance,” he said. He believes that if you take a big swing at the start of the week, the rest becomes manageable. That mindset carries into how he reviews coverage. Do the hard work early. Ask the right questions. Fix mistakes the moment you find them.

“When you help people, you get paid,” he said.

That line is more than a slogan. It is a philosophy. The agency does not compete by cutting corners. It competes by building trust and delivering when it counts. Claims from this single office total millions of dollars each year. Those checks keep businesses open and families stable.

David often says that people do not understand the value of insurance until they lose something. His mission is to help them understand before that day comes. By teaching clients to look past price and think about outcomes, Huddleston & Company gives people a way to invest in peace of mind.

In a town that continues to grow, that steady approach matters. Buildings will rise. Businesses will expand. Families will plant roots. And behind many of those plans will be a quiet but firm layer of protection, built by an agency that believes the future is worth guarding.

FOUR SIMPLE WAYS TO INVEST IN YOUR MORNING AND START YOUR DAY OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

habits morning for success

One of the best ways to invest in yourself is by creating a consistent and intentional morning routine. No matter how unpredictable or chaotic the rest of your day may become, starting your morning with self-care and purpose sets a positive tone that stays with you throughout the day.  Once you develop a morning routine that truly resonates with you, you’ll look forward to it every night, knowing it will set the foundation for a productive and fulfilling day.

If you’re ready to elevate your mornings, here are some meaningful ways to invest in your routine and start each day on the right foot.

Be Your Own Barista:

One of life’s simplest pleasures is savoring a homemade coffee each morning. While skipping the drivethru may be tough at first, brewing your own allows you to appreciate the process—and chances are, you’ll end up preferring your own perfect cup of joe.

Get Your Steps In:

An hour-long gym session before work may not be realistic, but a quick morning walk is. Use this time to clear your mind, enjoy nature, and listen to your favorite podcast or artist—an easy way to start your day feeling relaxed.

Enjoy Some Breakfast:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet often the most overlooked. Setting your alarm just minutes earlier to prepare a fresh, nutritious meal can transform your morning, fueling your body and mind for a more energized and productive day.

Read A Book:

Starting your day with a book is far more calming than scrolling through social media. Reading in the morning helps ease you into the day, providing a peaceful and mindful escape that sets a positive, focused tone for what’s ahead.

POWER IN Partnership

THE COUPLE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THINK NET TAILORED WEALTH SOLUTIONS

At Think Net Tailored Wealth Solutions, leadership begins at home. Sarah and JJ are not only partners in business. They are partners in life, in parenting, and in a shared vision for what a wealth firm can be.

For years, they worked in the same industry but under rules that kept them apart. They were married, yet working for separate practices. “We’ve been married five years, and this is the first time every effort we exert is poured into one place,” Sarah said. That shift changed everything. Instead of following someone else’s agenda, they now shape their own path and build something that reflects their values.

JJ describes their approach with clarity. He wants client conversations to be “transformational versus informational.” That mindset shapes how they meet with families, business owners, and young couples just starting out. Rather than simply offering products or giving surface advice, they look at the full picture. Real estate, business ventures, traditional investments, tax concerns, and future goals. Nothing stands alone.

“We look at everything,” Sarah explained. “We dig deep. We analyze where the cashflow is going to help mitigate or eliminate tax burdens whenever possible.” That process takes more time, yes, but it also builds genuine trust.

Their strengths balance each other. JJ often sees the broad view first. He can explain a concept in simple terms and help a client understand the direction. From there, Sarah moves into the details. She has been told many times that she makes people feel comfortable in meetings. Clients open up to her about fears and doubts they may not share elsewhere. She listens carefully, then builds a plan that supports both their goals and their peace of mind.

“I lean into the relational side of wealth management, ensuring our plans are as much about people as they are about numbers,” she said, smiling. JJ agrees, noting that while he brings the big picture, she ensures every piece fits.

Family remains at the center of it all. With six children between them, they understand that no two households look the same. Planning for a family with one child is very different from planning for one with six. Their own lived experiences inform their advice.

Even as the firm grows, they guard time at home. “We’re home almost every night for dinner, and I am cooking it,” Sarah laughed. Weekends belong to their kids. They work hard, yet they believe business success should not come at the cost of family connection. That belief extends to their team as well. They want people who work with them to feel proud, supported, and seen.

JJ speaks openly about the culture they are cultivating. At a prior firm, he felt high performance was expected but rarely celebrated. Now, his goal is simple and bold. He wants Think Net to be defined by the mantra as #CelebratedVsTolerated. He hopes it will become the number one place to work in town, a place where effort is recognized, and people feel valued.

Their vision reaches beyond office walls. Community impact matters deeply to both of them. JJ joined the Rotary Club of New Braunfels and told the group, “I am ready to give back.” For 25 years, the community has poured into JJ’s career. Now he focuses on pouring back into the community. Think Net has raised funds for colleagues battling illness, supported

children’s organizations, and contributed to local causes quietly and consistently.

Sarah’s heart often leans toward children in crisis or those who lack strong support systems. She believes time and attention can change a child’s path. Together, they have discussed forming a nonprofit to create steady, focused outreach. For now, they continue to support causes as needs arise, from local welfare efforts to organizations that help families facing hardship.

Growth is also part of the plan. JJ speaks with energy about expansion into larger markets such as San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Lubbock. Yet their long-term hope remains rooted close to home. He would love to see a larger presence locally, investing in commercial space, and creating jobs that strengthen the community that has given them so much.

At its core, their story is not only about finance. It is about stewardship. It is about building a firm where clients feel understood, where employees feel appreciated, and where children see what hard work and integrity look like in real time.

As Sarah put it, “Our goal is to raise children of character and to build a team of professionals we are truly honored to stand beside.” In that simple statement lies the true investment they are making every day.

Since 1977, we have served New Braunfels and surrounding areas with professional advice and quality plants. Plant You r Kitchen Garden

BACKYARD GARDENS OFFER FRESH VEGGIES AND FOOD FOR YOUR SOUL

A quick guide for simple ideas to start off your backyard kitchen garden. With endless health and medicinal benefits, combined with the beauty and enjoyment to be found, gardening is endlessly rewarding.

GETTING STARTED

• Plant your vegetable options right into your beds with flowers, the pollinators (bees, butterflies and more) are attracted to the beautiful flowers and your veggies will easily and abundantly go-tofruit, living harmoniously in one bed.

• Every garden needs a rain gauge - you’ll be surprised at how fun it is to check. There is nothing like rain water for your garden. (This is optional, but definitely fun).

• Get your family involved. It’s never too late!

• Just go for it, our local climate can be weird and often extreme but don’t let it stop you- the most success and fun I’ve had was just going for it. Experiment and see what you love and what works best for you!

• In most cases, when watering, don’t water the petals and leaves, (especially when they’re in direct sunlight) try to water straight to the soil. All they need is water, nutrients and light to thrive! (and maybe a little love helps too!)

• Don’t forget herbs: Lavender, Mint, Lemon Verbena, Oregano, Basil, Cilantro, Parsley and more. Don’t be afraid to skip the spice rack and grab your seasoning from the garden.

What to Plant

Whether starting from seed or seedlings, you can’t go wrong with these options. Start with foods you know you like to eat.

TOMATOES: They’re delicious, money-saving, good for eating fresh and for preserving. Tomatoes come in endless colors, shapes and sizes. Plant them in a sunny location with well-drained soil, ideally in full sun, and ensure they receive consistent moisture, supporting them with cages or stakes as they grow.

OKRA: Okra loves our hot summers and full sun. Don’t wait too long to pick your okra, ideally harvesting them when they are 2 to 4 inches long. Can be eaten raw on a salad or best served deep fried. (The flower that turns into the okra itself is uniquely beautiful as well!)

EGGPLANT: Eggplant is a short season vegetable and a relative of peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. It thrives in heat and full sun and can be deliciously made into baba ganoush and many other delicious dishes.

PEPPERS: Like tomatoes, peppers have many purposes and variations. Plant them in a sunny location with welldrained soil after the last frost, spacing them 18 inches apart, and provide consistent watering while ensuring the soil doesn't become waterlogged.

Flowers Bring Pollinators

Flowers bring joy to all five of our senses, but they also bring pollinators to our garden in order to ensure your backyard kitchen will produce lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Not to mention they also contain health and even medicinal properties.

HIBISCUS:

Make sure your hibiscus plants, whether tropical or hardy, get at least 6 hours of sun per day in order to achieve optimum blooming. Hibiscus flowers can be made into a delicious tea that can be served hot or ice cold (and is a good source of Vitamin C). With over 200 varieties of hibiscus world wide, their blooms only last a day or two! Stunning in all shapes, sizes and colors.

MARIGOLDS:

To the surprise of most people, marigold flowers are edible. Whether used fresh, dried, or infused into various beverages, Marigolds have a multitude of uses in the kitchen. An added benefit of planting these bright and low maintenance flowers next to tomatoes– they help keep pests away from devouring your tomatoes while also encouraging pollinators.

ZINNIAS: PLUMBAGO:

These bright, colorful garden gems have many benefits beyond their beauty and ease of care. Along with attracting pollinators, and being low maintenance they also have medicinal properties. Zinnias have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, they’re rich in antioxidants, and the natural compounds in zinnias can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness.

Plumbago is thought to have many health benefits, such as its anti-ulcer, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer properties, resulting from its principal chemical components, which are concentrated in the roots, leaves, and stems of plants. This attractive light purple flowering plant thrives in the sun, and has moderate watering needs. Trim and prune to suit your own preferences of growth and it’s a welcome, abundantly beautiful member of any garden.

How The McKenna Foundation supports health, learning, and strong families for generations ahead

The McKenna Foundation: Investing in Community

Strong communities grow through strong investment. The McKenna Foundation has been a strong pillar of the community, investing in others like Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation, River City Advocacy, Connections and many more. Guided by inspiration, influence, and impact, each grant is reviewed and measured. The goal is simple. Strengthen families, support partners, and build lasting opportunities for generations.

Investing in Health

Health shapes daily life in quiet but powerful ways. The foundation invests in clinics, wellness programs, and services that support older adults and families alike. Funding also strengthens mental health counseling and fitness efforts that keep residents active and steady. At the McKenna Center, classes and community events offer practical tools for healthy living. These investments help reduce pressure on emergency care while giving providers room to plan ahead. When neighbors can access care close to home, they remain productive, independent, and engaged.

Investing in Early Promise

Early childhood programs offer one of the most meaningful longterm returns. The foundation supports story times, play-based learning, and parent education that build confidence in young families. Grants also assist school readiness efforts and family services that help create a stable home life. Progress is tracked so support leads to real growth. When children begin school prepared to learn, teachers can focus on achievement rather than catching up. Families gain tools and encouragement. Over time, these early investments strengthen classrooms, raise graduation rates, and foster a sense of hope.

Investing in Partnership

Lasting change requires strong partners. The foundation invests in local nonprofits by offering both funding and guidance. Staff listen closely to community leaders, identify gaps, and help shape thoughtful solutions. Careful stewardship protects the endowment so it can meet needs today and tomorrow. Grants are paired with follow-up and accountability to ensure responsible use of funds. Beyond dollars, the foundation shares knowledge, planning support, and connections that help agencies grow. As organizations strengthen, services expand. The result is a network of capable partners working together to serve families across Comal County.

As you think about optimizing your wellness this season, don’t forget one of the most important pillars of preventative care: your annual Well Woman Exam

This visit is about more than just checking a box It includes a comprehensive review of your overall health, a clinical breast exam, and a pelvic exam with Pap smear when indicated all designed to support early detection, hormonal balance, and long-term vitality

Preventative care empowers you to stay ahead of potential concerns rather than reacting to them later. If it’s been a year (or longer), consider this your friendly reminder: schedule your annual exam and prioritize your health with the same care you give to everyone else.
