“Sunday Fundays are usually grilling up some burgers or steak fajitas in the backyard and taking our kids to the splash pad at Fischer Park!”

“Sunday is usually with the hubby at the river floating, kayaking, taking the dogs to the park, meal prepping on the bbq, or spending time with close friends”

“We like to meet up with friends and hit up Freiheit country store because it is kid-friendly, great music and their pies are so good. In Seguin, we like the power plant. The view of the waterfall is awesome and I like to geek out about the old electrical equipment. Night time one of our favorites is Moonshine and Ale. It is such a fun piano bar!”

“McAdoo’s has the best Bloody Mary bar on Sundays! With their delicious menu, it’s always a good start to the day. Another favorite lately has been Lupe Tortilla! Another good hang out for Sundays is the Float In. Especially with this hot weather! Sip n Putt later in the evenings to catch the sunset - it’s awesome. The options in NB are endless and that’s what makes me love this town!

“If we aren’t at Schlitterbahn during the summer then we love to be in the water before the tubers! Swimming/paddle boarding at Hinman Island or River Acres Park. The spring fed pool at Landa is relaxing.”

2Tarts Bakery

A Tale of Sisterhood, Community, and Irresistible Treats at 2Tarts Bakery

In the heart of New Braunfels, Texas, a charming local bakery named 2Tarts has been enchanting customers since its establishment in 2010. Owned by sisters April Ryan and Ashley Landerman, this bakery is more than just a place to satisfy your sweet tooth – it's a testament to the power of family, community involvement, and the farm-to-table movement.

A SHARED PASSION FOR FOOD AND FAMILY

Born foodies, April and Ashley's love for culinary delights was nurtured from a young age. Growing up, food, made with love, was at the center of their

family gatherings and church potlucks. After pursuing individual paths in the food service industry across the country, the sisters serendipitously found themselves back in New Braunfels, eager to create something special for their beloved hometown.

"We knew that supporting local farmers and producers was the best way to create high-quality pastries," shared the sisters, emphasizing their dedication to the farm-to-table movement. From pecans from Seguin to milk from Waco, 2Tarts Bakery takes pride in featuring artisanal ingredients sourced from the community.

THE SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS

In 2019, the bakery's reputation reached new heights when Ashley Landerman participated in and won the prestigious Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge. "It was just so exciting to represent New Braunfels on a national stage," Ashley shared, "The experience was humbling, and the response from our customers was overwhelming. Our phone was ringing off the hook because everyone wanted to try what I had made on the show, the gouda shortbread in particular."

A LEADERSHIP ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Beyond their culinary talents, April's passion for promoting local businesses and community engagement has become a vital part of 2Tarts Bakery's identity. From the very beginning, the sisters became active members of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce and the New Braunfels Downtown Association, gaining valuable insights and tools for success that they have since shared with aspiring entrepreneurs.

"As a servant leader, I know how important it is to step up and help solve the challenges we all face," said April, who also serves on the Spark Small Business Center Board as Vice Chair and actively participates in various committees that champion small businesses and their positive impact on communities. Not stopping there, April also answered the call to run for City Council, eager to contribute her expertise as a small business owner to tackle big-picture issues in her community.

CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY: A PERFECT UNION

With April's fine arts background, she brings an artistic eye and meticulous attention to detail to 2Tarts Bakery's bridal and design department. The bakery's stunning desserts have earned features in national wedding blogs and magazines, making every occasion an unforgettable and editorial-worthy experience.

A GIVING SPIRIT: FOSTERING COMMUNITY

Community involvement is deeply ingrained in 2Tarts Bakery's values. The sisters actively donate to local nonprofits such as Community in Schools and the New Braunfels Public Library Foundation. Additionally, they actively contribute to the planning and execution of community events like Wassailfest and Dia de los Muertos Festival, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared joy.

THE JOURNEY AHEAD

With over a decade of experience in business, April and Ashley remain dedicated to their shared vision for 2Tarts Bakery. "We are still striving to stay creative and add new flavors and products for our customers," said the sisters, tantalizingly hinting at exciting projects and announcements on the horizon.

In the heart of New Braunfels, 2Tarts Bakery weaves a tale of sisterhood, community, and the joy of creating delectable treats. As the bakery continues to thrive and evolve, one thing remains constant – the love they pour into every pastry and the warmth they share with every customer.

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

THE POPULARITY OF THE BLACK DRESS SKYROCKETED and IT BECAME ONE

OF THE MOST influential PIECES OF CLOTHING.

COCO CHANNEL MADE THE BOLD MOVE TO PRINT A SHORT, BLACK DRESS ON THE COVER OF VOGUE IN 1926

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:

Bringing Joy

Chef Dennis Prescott Talks Falling in Love with Feeding People and the Connection Food Creates

Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”

Whether you know him from the Netflix hit Restaurants on the Edge or from his absolutely mouth-watering food photos as @ dennistheprescott on the ‘gram, this former-musician turned internationally-renowned Chef is an amazingly talented, thoughtful, and globe-trotting force to be reckoned with. When it comes to inspiration for creating experiences around food and your community, as well as creating travel bucket lists to some of the world’s most unique and delicious destinations off the beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on

Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with them around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams.

Yet, in the midst of all of this, Dennis was not taking care of himself — eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life. A friend had a “come to Jesus” moment with him and stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself. Having no idea exactly what that meant or how to do so, the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.”

The Start

“Go to the library and borrow some cookbooks,” his friend suggested. Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time.

Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment.

“I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment.

What eventually followed were 13 episodes over nine months where the Restaurants on the Edge team traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland.

“When you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.

Travel Recommendations for Foodies

“Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.”

Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland.

“Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.”

Restaurants on the Edge is important and meaningful to Chef Prescott because it tells stories of hope and joy and redemption around the kitchen. Oftentimes the food space can be very stressful, but he believes that at the end of the day, people just want to spend time with other people that they love.

One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’

Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there.

“Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
