Here's to Celebrating! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Is it just me, or is everyone else feeling like the season in Naples kicked off with a bang? To prove the point, check out our Good Times section where Naples Lifestyle made an appearance at many (sadly not all) of the city's fabulous events, celebrating all the things that make this city so special: food and drink, cultural events, and art and beauty. And to keep you in the loop, we have selected some choice happenings coming up this month to entice you out the door in our Around Town section. Read on... And if you, like me, were planning to tiptoe into 2019, to slow down a little more as the dawn breaks, so to speak, then banish the thought! There's just too much happening in Naples. The possibilities on offer are endless. Everywhere you look, new restaurants are opening (and old favorites still delivering the goods), the theater beckons, sporting events call your name, and charitable occasions, too, need your devotion.

SAVVY SHOPPER:
THE OLIVE OIL THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU NAPLES'S OLIVE OIL SOMMELIER HAS THE ANSWERS
SO MANY OF US TODAY PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHAT WE CONSUME, AND ALMOST ANYONE YOU TALK TO HAS SOMEONE IN THEIR EXTENDED FAMILY WHO’S GONE GLUTEN-FREE, VEGAN (AND OTHER VARIATIONS) OR
Marie Heiland, an olive oil sommelier, is proudly passionate about what she sells. And rightly so!
FOLLOWS A HEALTHY MEDITERRANEAN DIET. All plans deem olive oil to be an important component to their success—there’s science beyond the glass bottles. The benefits, scientists report, are numerous: olive oil acts against the gene that triggers breast cancer, is kind to the heart and is very high in mono-unsaturated fats helping to lower blood cholesterol. All good news for us consumers, but it decidedly comes down to taste, and it takes an olive oil sommelier to give you a basic beginner’s glimpse into the vast world of variety out there. Marie Heiland, NOOC's proprietor, in business here for the last 10 years, will explain and initiate visitors to the store that each oil has a different smell, taste and after-taste—just like wine, in fact. Cultivating and crushing the fruit, the olive, also varies by hemispheres and their seasons, as in viticulture, so it’s worth asking what’s the freshest (South African, Greek or Italian, as examples) at the time of your visit; the younger, the healthier for you. And again, like wine, taste away here at NOOC—from the purest to the seasoned versions—so you’ll be sure to make the right choice (or several). The best for you will always be a very high-quality one, as it's likely that production methods left most antioxidants and other healthy components intact. Just keep in mind that antioxidants in olive oil are bitter: the higher the antioxidant content, the more bitter it will be.

DINNER TONIGHT: BHA! BHA! PERSIAN BISTRO DELIVERS A CULINARY JOURNEY ALONG THE ANCIENT SILK ROAD A SPECTACULAR BLEND OF FLAVORS FROM THE MED, THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE FAR EAST ADAPTED FOR THE AMERICAN PALATE
ASK MANY A PASSER-BY ON NAPLES’S FIFTH AVENUE IF THEY CAN LOCATE PERSIA (MODERN-DAY IRAN) ON A MAP, AND CHANCES ARE THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO. But ask them where Bha! Bha!, the beloved Persian bistro is situated, and most, unhesitatingly, will point you to the precise corner on the specific block—and wish you a good time when you get there. The world is full of fabulous food just waiting to be sampled, and Naples, for sure, is a diner’s paradise. So, after eating at Bha! Bha! recently, I just had to come back and chat with the owner, Michael Mir, to get his story. He has been in business here in town with this very restaurant for a long time. His leap of faith when he opened a restaurant serving Persian food in this very American-food-focused city was decidedly daring. “Twenty-one years ago, when I decided to pursue my dreams and open a restaurant serving food from my country of origin, I was cautioned that this was very much a meat and potato lover’s domain,” he says. Naples Lifestyle | January 2019
"My mother made wonderful food," says Michael Mir, Bha! Bha!'s owner. The rest is history.
Maybe so, but those same meat and potato lovers have come to love their old staples rendered here with a twist. So, today, Michael’s Bha! Bha! Persian Bistro is a great story about business success, delicious food and the people of Naples. Because Bha! Bha! is very much a part of Naples’ heritage, its history. Originally located in North Naples in the Pavilion shopping center, the restaurant stayed put for 15 years before moving to Fifth Avenue in 2012, and while new crowds came, his loyal customers followed—friends after so many years. Naples today has well and truly embraced Persian food. Michael’s gamble with an unknown cuisine here
Vibrant colors set the scene for delicious dining.
in town paid off for a reason. Essentially, he made it easy for diners to understand the menu and the food. Adapting the recipes his mother—a fabulous cook— used to prepare for the local palate proved easier than he had imagined. His is family-style food that is served in an elegant and contemporary atmosphere. And folks here just can’t get enough. The seafood khoresh (a stew) is a heavenly Persian version of cioppino; the lamb meatballs in pomegranate sauce a delicious and different take on the more traditional variety we've all had time and time again. Then, there’s the beautifully scented saffron rice, the aroma of which you're not likely to forget any time soon. The harmony of flavors, aromatic and surprisingly mild, is powerful and exciting. Persia, one of the oldest civilizations on the planet, dates back to 550 BCE. So the art of cooking is nothing new to the land, but for us in the US, Persia is best known culturally for commodities and companions like caviar, cats, carpets, pistachios and saffron (and, of course, poets like Rumi and Omar Khayam); so here's the chance to expand your horizons. An elegant seeand-be-seen venue akin to what the Russian Tea Room was to NYC back in the day, spending an evening in this chic and colorful bistro will permit you to travel in style without leaving town. Instagram gold.

RUNWAY RUNAWAYS
BEAUTIES THAT WOULD BE EQUALLY AT HOME ON AN AIRPORT RUNWAY AS ON THE DESIGNER VARIETY, WE’RE TALKING TODAY ABOUT SOME OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA’S MOST ICONIC AND POWERFUL SPORTS CARS, AVAILABLE NOW, HERE IN TOWN—IN BONITA SPRINGS, TO BE EXACT. So, if your palms sweat at the sight of 500 hp or more; you have a penchant for all things beautiful and shiny; and you just can’t wait to put the pedal to the metal, hit the road and leave the dirty air in the dust, Gulf Coast Motorworks may just have the true love you’re Because isn’t a new car a great way to start a new year? We aren’t suggesting you follow in the footsteps of, say, Pablo Escobar—whose garage boasted some serious beauties in days gone by—but spend some time with the team in this showroom, and you’re sure to meet your match. Cars aside, what makes any such showroom so special are the people working within. Buy a car from Gulf Coast Motorworks, and the people here will be friends, confidants, and advisors in all things speed-related, for life. And that’s how it should be. According to general manager Rob Oteri, there’s always an excuse to meet up, go for a drive, and have a banter over a cup of coffee. In fact, whether you’re a customer or not, Gulf Coast organizes regular coffee and car days if you’re looking for a very laidback club to join with like-minded people—their Facebook page has the details. Established in 2010 as a DeLorean dealership exclusively, the focus changed as the physical showroom and service side of the business grew, expanding to include a bevy of supercars, exotics, and kit cars, namely Shelby Cobras from South Africa. These super-performance kit cars appeal to anyone wanting to emulate the famous Texan Carroll Shelby himself when he won Le Mans and other races, but that’s a story for another day. Today’s tale is about the cars on the floor here, mostly European brands, but there are a few from US stables like Dodge Vipers and Corvettes. According to Oteri, “Almost sixty percent of our business is conducted over the phone, with customers from all over the country looking for a specific car in pristine condition.” And the showroom here can deliver. The cars all have low mileage, hail exclusively from the US, and are in perfect shape. “Vendors know me well—I’ve been in the business, the "club" really, for over 20 years—and they know how demanding I am when it comes to what I will buy,” elaborates Oteri. before being fine-tuned, polished and driven onto the showroom floor, ready for a new owner. Curious to know what Oteri himself drives? He’ll explain that he used to be a Ferrari aficionado. But now, he’s all about McLaren, and he has recently purchased a coveted model for himself. There are several here now in the showroom; the one with the highest horsepower, over 660 to be precise, is the ultra-light McLaren 675 LT which runs like greased lightning. And there are so many more to get your adrenaline pumping. Stop by for a coffee, a banter about all things automotive, make some new friends, and, if you don’t know how, it’s time you learned to drive a manual shift or a Tiptronic, at least. Someone here will be glad to teach you, and you’ll no doubt learn a few new car-related terms you can use to impress any petrol-heads you meet along the way—if you
