LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends,
April 2023 PUBLISHER
Gregory Dodge | Gregory.Dodge@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com
We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, being a beginner, and even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. I was fortunate to join friends aboard a sunset cruise with Syren Yacht Charters where we ventured out into the bay and toasted to our good fortune and the importance of relationships. See that story on page 38. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or on a beach walk. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! Happy April!

Teamwork is Dreamwork COUPLES WHO WORK TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER. ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Meet Preston Hess and Tatianna Diaz TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS: Alpha Properties was started when we moved to Florida in 2019. Alpha Properties is a luxury renovation company specializing in investment properties. At first, it was just the two of us doing everything from demo to completion. It has now evolved into a full family business.
AS A COUPLE, HOW DO YOU FIND WORK-LIFE BALANCE? We love starting our day with quality time, doing our devotionals together, and hitting the gym before the work day. We set Sundays aside to go to church and spend time together, at the beach, at home, or with friends and family. We also sneak in an occasional date night!
WORKING TOGETHER CAN BE CHALLENGING! WHAT IS A KEY STRATEGY FOR A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP? Recognizing each other's strengths and allowing one another to focus on those areas helps to reduce conflict. We both agreed that at the end of the day, the most important thing is our marriage and we will never let our business jeopardize that. Respect and support for one another are key.

Matt primarily works with clients and Lindsey handles the website and marketing. It’s a great blend of our skillsets and interests.
AS A COUPLE, HOW DO YOU FIND WORK-LIFE BALANCE? For the most part, our work and family life balance works well. Since both of us have flexible schedules, we are able to back each other up easily and have a complete understanding of the role and responsibilities of the other.
WORKING TOGETHER CAN BE CHALLENGING! WHAT IS A KEY STRATEGY FOR A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP? We have separate home offices which allows for uninterrupted calls and quiet time in between a busy schedule. We also make sure to eat lunch together most days so we can discuss and focus on business planning.

Keri Johnson’s World FINDING THE TRUE ESSENCE OF WOMEN AND CELEBRATING THEM AT A GALLERY-STYLE EXHIBITION.
Nancy Schumaker & Kelly Capolino
Dr. JW & Patsy Valentine
Mason Chagnon & Meri Karenovna
Matt & Stephanie Norton
Keri Johnson’s 40 over 40 portrait Campaign is an experience for women over the age of 40 to embrace not only their age, but their beauty, wisdom, and the woman they have become throughout their journey in life. It doesn’t matter if you are over 40, 50, 60, or more. It doesn’t matter if you are a size 2 or 22. "For me, I want all women to celebrate their unique femininity. That means ALL women," says Keri. "Being in front of the camera is a very vulnerable place to be. That is why it is of utmost importance that a comfortable environment is provided when you are with us." Most women book shoots as a gift for someone else. The truth is, the experience is for the woman. The photos are the souvenir. Many of the women who participated last year couldn’t believe they were actually looking at themselves. They have never seen their true beauty like this before. Keri starts with a wardrobe consultation to prepare for their magazine style photo shoot. This is where Barbie, our professional hair and makeup artist will create her magic. There will be several wardrobe changes for a variety of looks. This day gives them a chance to feel like a celebrity. "Many of the women from our past campaign have never had a professional photo shoot before and others have never felt beautiful. We are celebrating women who have a story to share. A big part of the campaign is really getting to know the women and sharing their stories along with their beautiful portraits." Taking Care, Finding Inspiration What our influencers are excited about this month PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA CAMPBELL, MARLISSA GARDNER, DARREN CLAIR
Relationship First By Marlissa Gardner As we enter peak season here in Naples, I reflect on my personal and business journey, shaped in part by life in Naples. I have come to a profound conclusion that success in the business of art is about many things, passion, knowledge and hard work, but mostly it is built on relationships and so is Naples. I talked recently to the owner of one of our top restaurants in Naples. “In Naples, we celebrate diverse backgrounds and invest in relationships,” he told me. My entry to the world of high-value, investable, collectible art came through relationships. In 2015 armed with an American “can-do” attitude and a passion for art and conversation, I agreed to manage an exhibition for an Italian artist. Our joint success, our partnership, ultimately led to me receiving a knighthood from the Medici family for art and culture. Now, bringing the knowledge and experience I have built over the last eight years, I enjoy introducing the world of Masterworks to Naples in a series of collaborations with local influencers and businesses, creating a buzz through the experiences and moments in our lives and art that points towards value and impact. Combined with the “Mosaic of Memories” project and shows from emerging masters such as Todd Williamson and Dario Campanile, this coming season is shaping up to be the best. This is “Relationship First”. This is life in Naples. This is life in art, and I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds. From the base of a gallery on 5th Avenue, I built a roster of artists, and a network of dealers across the world, and the real business began. My journey has not been easy. Emillions Art is something different for Naples. We are not a first-floor walk-in gallery; we are on the second floor. We deal with fine art, and meaningful art, ranging from unique emerging contemporary master artists to rare masterworks. We work with people who are seekers of impact, value and beauty; from wealthy collectors and homeowners to our inspirational interior designers.

Finding Strength By Angela Campbell I’m often asked how I found strength in wellness. In my early 40s, I noticed that I felt physically and mentally exhausted all of the time — and, on top of that, I was also struggling with brain fog and found myself sick more often. This led me to look into exercise and IV therapy on my journey to feeling better. By exercising regularly and using IV therapy as a way to hydrate my body, I started to feel more energetic and youthful. I also learned about the powerful benefits of vitamin infusions. Using Vitamin B to increase my energy levels, Vitamin C to strengthen my immune system, and Glutathione to improve my overall recovery, I noticed that I had more energy and wasn’t sick as often. However, I still struggled with brain fog, and eventually discovered NAD IV therapy which stimulates cell regeneration and helps with enhancing cognitive processing. The therapy worked great for me, and within a few days I felt my brain fog lifting. I strongly believe that I was able to find strength in wellness by combining exercise with IV therapy. Liquivida® is a full-service wellness center in Naples offering age management and medical spa services. All Shapes By Darren FX Clair, MD, DipABLM For me, weight is not an aesthetic issue: there are beautiful people in every size. As a physician, however, excess weight, or more specifically, excess body fat is a serious health concern. Excess body fat greatly increases one’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and even cancer. Because of this fact, I have always offered a weight management program at Vibrance Health. For 21 years, Vibrance has offered a safe, natural, tried & true solution to weight loss, that also works amazingly fast. I do not believe in offering the latest “miracle drug” that may be trending now. The simple fact is that all drugs have side effects. For a permanent solution, it is important to help people understand and address why they may have gained weight. Is it due to hormonal imbalances, stress-related, due to poor-quality sleep, or lifestyle issues? Our comprehensive SHAPE Weight Loss Program helps people to do just that - quickly, comfortably, and healthfully lose unwanted body fat, once and for all! VibranceHealth.com

PEACE AND PRIVACY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEATHER SCHWARZ, TRAVEL AMBASSADOR
Where does one go away for vacation when you’re already living in paradise? Head to Anguilla in the Eastern Caribbean. The sun shone brightly as the plane descended into Anguilla. As the plane touched down, we could already feel the warmth of the island and the peacefulness that surrounded it. It was an easy 2-and-a-half-hour direct flight from Miami International Airport. The Four Seasons in Anguilla was the perfect place to stay. Peaceful, quiet, and private, it was the ideal resort to relax and unwind. As soon we arrived, we were welcomed with cool drinks and warm smiles from the friendly staff. We felt right at home. Our suite was well appointed with a private outdoor plunge pool on the balcony and a relaxing living area. The views from our room of the crystal blue waters and the sound of the ocean waves were enough to make anyone forget the outside world. We were especially impressed by the amenities offered at the resort. With the three restaurants, the high-end boutique, and the incredible fitness facility, we had everything we needed to make our stay truly luxurious. We loved the outdoor bar including an impressive collection of authentic Cuban cigars
to choose from. You never know who you’re going to meet there, as the resort is frequented by professional athletes, celebrities and executives. We took in the beauty of the island while lounging by any one of the three pools, taking a dip in the ocean and morning walks along Meads Bay Beach. The ideal time to visit is in February and March when the sunsets are spectacular and the floating pool bar is open. The island breezes keep you cool and the sun is just right for getting a golden tan. The resort offers rooms ranging from 1-5 bedrooms, making it perfect for couples’ trips, girls' weekends away, or family vacations. The villas even come with your own golf cart. It was clear that the resort was more than just a place to stay, it was a home away from home. For someone looking for a peaceful, quiet and private place to get away, the Four Seasons in Anguilla is the perfect destination. With its crystal blue waters, legendary hospitality, incredible food, amazing spa (featuring treatment rooms overlooking the ocean) and all the amenities, it's no wonder why guests keep coming back year after year. Finding Peace in Naples ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA KAHL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIRELLA ROSOL AND MICHELLE TRICCA
For many, finding out life-altering news can make or break a relationship. But for Maggie and Altaf Jetha of Naples, it drew them closer. When Altaf’s father became severely ill, a diagnosis wasn’t straightforward. The symptoms pointed toward Alzheimer’s, Tourette’s, or ALS; however, his official diagnosis was a mystery, and the family didn't have a definitive answer until years later. “We knew something was going on in the family before we got married,” Maggie says. Later, Altaf’s brother became ill and started experiencing the same symptoms as their father. After countless rounds of testing and several misdiagnoses, the test results came back as positive for Huntington’s Disease (HD). This news was earth shattering for Maggie and Altaf. The pair decided that he needed to undergo testing to see if he also carried the gene for HD. “So, we met with a geneticist, we went through all the family trees, and saw a psychiatrist to rule out suicidal thoughts,” Maggie says. “Because there's no cure for this disease, it just progresses and it gets worse throughout the years. Finally, we were allowed to get the blood tests. It was like the

most nerve wracking two weeks of our life. He had a positive test. So that just like destroyed us. But now life changes.” The life Maggie once knew completely shifted. She went from a stay-at-home wife to a fulltime caretaker. They soon realized that living in Michigan would only make Altaf’s life harder as his condition worsened. Their solution to Altaf’s HD diagnosis was to move somewhere in Florida. “One day we were relaxing in our pool and my husband randomly suggested we move to Florida,” Maggie says. He realized that spending time in the water, and a pool, was therapeutic.” After searching all along the Gulf Coast, the pair fell in love with downtown Naples. They immediately purchased a home and moved down. Over the past four years of living in Florida, Maggie has seen her husband’s health and wellbeing deteriorate at a rapid pace. He went from being able to walk and eat to needing assistance for every daily activity. Maggie has structured her entire life and schedule around him, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Collins: You grew up in Old Naples riding your bike to the pier and your family were fishermen, spending most weekends, summers, and holidays on a fishing boat between Florida, the Bahamas, and Costa Rica. After attending UCF as a chemistry major, you realized you'd rather spend your days on the water than in a lab and moved to Hawaii, became a Divemaster on a dive boat, and spent more hours of the day in the water than out. This love of the water and long history led you to get your USCG Captain's License. Why did you return to Naples to continue your career? Captain Sarah Mckenna: My decision to move back to Naples was based on a desire to live closer to family and the coast coupled with the opportunity to run Syren and then

Syrenette for a company that I love who was expanding their hospitality services into the boating industry. SC: You do full and half days, brunch and sunset cruises and more. Walk us through the booking process and how you tailor each cruise to your guests. SM: Yes! We are excited to announce that we will also offer a full day excursion to the Everglades. Booking is available by calling directly as well as online on our website. For every charter booked, we communicate with the guests for desires on route, food and drink preferences as well as special occasion details such as cake orders, decorations and tailored playlists. We have had proposals, weddings, memorials, bachelor/bachelorette gatherings as well as numerous birthdays. We love to host a celebration as well as just a great day out on the water. We also offer membership programs to guests that want the joy of boating without the expense, maintenance, upkeep, and storage obligations that come with ownership. This is also a
great option for realtors and business professionals to host clients to show them the spectacular nature of coastal living. A “Captain’s Dinner Experience” will include a sunset cruise aboard Syren complete with hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails and then dinner onboard back at the dock with exclusive food and wine offerings. SC: All food and beverages, water sport toys and equipment, towels, sunscreen, beach chairs, fuel, and taxes are included in the price. Easy! What is a favorite route and destination for a full-day charter? SM: Full-day charters are our favorite! More time on the water to enjoy. Depending on the guest preferences and weather, heading south is a fun option. We can stop for a swim off the coast of Keewaydin Island, then head further towards Marco Island into Collier Bay. It’s a nice spot to drop anchor to take a dip and enjoy some lunch catered by our sister company, The Syren Oyster and Cocktail Bar. Then make our way through CONTINUED >

SM: After a successful first season for Syren Yacht we decided to expand our fleet to include Syrenette- a 29’

Papa John’s Journey ARTICLE BY NAPLES CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
John Schnatter is a father and grandfather, the founder of Papa John’s International, a major philanthropist who cares deeply about investing in tomorrow’s leaders, and one of America’s most iconic entrepreneurs. John’s numerous business achievements and philanthropic efforts have earned him the 1998 National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, and an induction into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2011, John was also inducted into Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga Business School’s Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.
My dad offered me a job helping him manage his bar that was failing. I took the offer because it was the only one on the table and because I thought I could help turn Mick’s Tavern around. It was hard work to improve the business, but I did it. That’s when I had my “aha” moment and realized that entrepreneurship was my calling. Later, I started selling pizza out of the broom closet at Mick’s. From that broom closet, my dream for life was born. I knew then exactly where I was going and how I was going to get there.
NAPLES CITY LIFESTYLE: WHERE WERE YOU IN YOUR EARLY 20’S?
NCL: WHAT WAS YOUR MINDSET LIKE AND WHAT WAS IMPORTANT TO YOU DURING THAT TIME FRAME?
John Schnatter: In the summer of 1983, I was broke and unemployed. All I really knew was that I loved making pizza.
JS: My dad’s bar was $64,000 in debt – I loved my father very much—he was, after all, one of the two most important people in my life—but even

“When you’re young, your family and your experiences build out your character and your values. If you keep those things in focus and never forget where you came from, you’re going to be rock solid in life.”
before I turned 12, I knew I wanted to succeed where my Dad hadn’t. My mission was to get the bar out of debt – work hard, cut costs, and raise revenues – and that mindset followed me throughout my 20s and 30s. It wasn’t until I was 37 years old that I had this coach tell me “Vietnam is over, you need to wake up.” He meant that I no longer needed to look over my shoulder like when I was managing Mick’s and lived life on the edge of a knife. Before then, I was operating totally based on the fear of failure and that’s not a healthy outlook in the long run.
NCL: WHO ARE YOU TODAY? JS: Today, in essence, I’d say I’m the same person I’ve always been – maybe just a little older and wiser. I’m a dad, a grandfather, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist. I’m certainly enjoying the life I built. Fortunately, I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been and excited for whatever life has in store for me next. Even if there is another great business venture ahead, I’ll always feel honored to have built a business where other people could succeed and prosper too, including franchisees and employees. We even paid out $30 million in bonuses throughout the team, from top executives to the custodial staff. No matter what I’m doing, though, I have four criteria. It’s got to be in my soul and authentic. It must be scalable. It must also be sustainable. And, finally, it must help make the world a better place.

NCL: IF YOU HAD A SECOND CHANCE AT PLAYING LIFE AGAIN, WOULD YOU DO IT EXACTLY THE SAME WAY? JS: For the most part, I wouldn’t change a thing I’ve done in my life. I don’t live with regrets, but I do try to learn from my past decisions and experiences. Although some things didn’t play out exactly how I would have wanted, those things still taught me valuable lessons that got me where I am today. We built a great company over the 34 years I was there at Papa John’s, focused on rewarding people and producing quality products. While my company seems to have strayed from my founding principles, I am proud of what we accomplished there, and will always support the franchisees who helped me build such a great brand.
NCL: IS WHO YOU BECAME WHAT YOU PROJECTED TO BECOME IN YOUR 20S? JS: When I started Papa John’s, I knew right from the start that I wanted to compete with Domino’s worldwide. Considering we had over 5,000 stores when I stopped managing the company day-to-day in 2016, I’d say we certainly gave Domino’s and the rest of the pizza delivery business a run for their money. So, I would say from a very young age, I knew exactly what I wanted to become as a person and a businessman, and I fulfilled and exceeded that vision by far. When you’re young, your family and your experiences build out your character and your values. If you keep those things in focus and never forget where you came from, you’re going to be rock solid in life.

Grizzly Honey Interiors LAUREN WILMERING & KELLY JOHNSON INTERIOR DECORATORS
As childhood friends who grew up in Naples, Lauren Wilmering and Kelly Johnson have always been inspired by the light shades of the sand and driftwood on our beaches as well as the dark woods and deep greens of our Everglades. "We have a very bold yet soft approach to decorating and we are coined as 'sophisticated tomboys' since we work with our hands while walking in heels, hence the name Grizzly Honey," says Lauren. "Our 20-plus combined years working as real estate agents, looking at similar interior home styles over and over drove us to bring our creative sides out into decorating." The women have worked for companies in the past consulting on designs and have decided to take the leap to start their own business to allow their creative minds to flourish. Their theme, "Let the Wild In," brings the outdoors in to give you the full experience of living in this tropical paradise that is our hometown.

Sleep Inside, Outside
Photography by Valtteri Hirvonen
3 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars
It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.
Photography by Pacuare Lodge
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland These arctic igloos make Urho Kekkonen National Park look like a dreamy winter wonderland. Snuggle up inside the glassroofed globe and watch the dancing northern lights overhead. Get immersed in the world of northern lights, midnight sun and other miracles of this world-renowned arctic resort. Just bundle up before stepping outside – temperatures can drop to -22 degrees!
Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.
Amangiri, Utah In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus.
