LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends,
March 2023 PUBLISHER
Gregory Dodge | Gregory.Dodge@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com
Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. In Naples, we have so many ways to live... by the water, by the beach or golf course in highrises and small niche neighborhoods. I live in LAGO, and I love it. My apartment is great, but it's the people that make it a special place for me. This month, I wanted to share two exciting new communities with you, Ritz Carlton Residences and The Metropolitan. The Naples developers bring these oases to life, and they will forever change our city for the better. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. We feel like the lucky ones as we are learning more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most all of - your home. We're excited to announce the newest addition to Naples City Lifestyle magazine, The Dayli, a weekly newsletter bringing you the latest business openings and Naples business news. You've requested it, and we're delivering it! We've also developed a calendar app, which will be the easiest way to see what social functions are happening every day, week and month. You may reach out to me or Lauren Rossi if you'd like to discuss events, stories or advertising. Lauren@laurenrossi.net or gregory.dodge@citylifestyle.com Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month it lands in their mailbox. They say they hold onto it for months as a coffee table staple or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home. Happy March! Sincerely,

It’s confusing, so we asked the professionals at ReRoute America to clear up the issue. In the effort to achieve or, at least, move the bar on a sustainable scale, many restaurants and hotels offer their guests beverages in Compostable plastic cups. The appearance (a nice plastic cup with green leaves and wording highlighting that it is compostable) gives the guest a feeling that they are contributing to the effort to rid the planet of single-use plastics. But in the case of most Florida businesses using the PLA Compostable cups, they are doing more harm than good. In order for a compostable cup to actually compost, it has to be collected in a separate bio bag and brought to an industrial composting facility. There are only eight of these in the entire United States and the closest to Florida? North Carolina. Unfortunately, these cups can’t be recycled and if thrown in a landfill (which they usually are), they will sit there for hundreds of years. Recyclable cups have a better chance of being recycled and reused in most parts of the country. ReRoute America is a seller and distributor of sustainable products for the Restaurant and Hospitality Industries. By offering products such as straws, cutlery, cups and to-go containers made from the by-products of such plants as the Agave Plant, the Sugarcane Plant or from recycled materials our mission is to lessen the environmental impact on our planet by avoiding single-use plastics. Goal is to inform and educate the industries we serve on the best way to promote a sustainable environment inside of their properties. By making sure our customers and in turn, their guests, understand when to use compostable products and how these products respond to certain factors, such as heat and water, we can start to move the needle in a positive direction and responsibly promote sustainability. As the seasons shift, a majority of women will find melasma, the pigmentation disorder, has returned during the last few months of summer. Melasma is a pesky, chronic skin discoloration triggered by a variety of factors: hormone fluctuations, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, exposure to excessive sun, heat, or plain old genetics. Getting rid of melasma is almost impossible; it never really goes away. However, there are various internal and external options to treat melasma and keep it under control—including a strict skincare routine that cuts out unnecessary exposure to heat and sun. (Discipline in relation to sun protection is always a key factor, as anyone with this condition will tell you. Even after months of successfully keeping hyperpigmentation at bay, it takes only an hour without a hat under the sun to have it all reappear again.) Cristina Lévon deems it imperative to not only treat the symptoms, but also to find and prevent the underlying causes

that bring on discoloration, then work to prohibit hyperpigmentation from returning in the future. “My favorite treatment option for melasma is a peel called Cosmelan MD,” says Cristina, better known as “The Naples Aesthetician.” “Instead of working on just the surface appearance of the skin like traditional chemical peels, this peel works at a cellular level to actually stop the overactive melanocytes responsible for the melasma. Cosmelan is a pigment-inhibiting peel that works by slowing melanin production while accelerating cell turnover to lift dark patches from the skin. I generally recommend this peel for melasma sufferers one or two times a year.” “This is a compound applied to the skin and left on as a mask for eight to twelve hours. Clients can expect redness, flaking, and sensitivity for two weeks, and clients can see improvement in their pigment in just seven days. Lasting results are dependent on the client’s skincare routine and lifestyle post-treatment. Because there is no cure for melasma, clients should be on a long-term pigment-inhibiting routine between Cosmelan treatments, and products should include tyrosinase-inhibiting ingredients such as vitamin C, kojic acid, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, hydroquinone and arbutin. Besides the religious use of SPF every single day, clients need to maintain a lifestyle that keeps them out of direct sun exposure and heat. Saunas, jacuzzis, and hot yoga should be avoided at all costs, since heat is a major contributing factor for melasma.”

A Coastal Icon Emerges: The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Naples ARTICLE BY CAROLINE UNDERWOOD BURMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTESY OF STOCK DEVELOPMENT

Developed by venerated marketplace leader STOCK Residences, the new waterfront project is a major draw for luxury homebuyers The prime property market is abuzz with news surrounding Naples’ newest and most legendary waterfront address: The RitzCarlton Residences, Naples. The exclusive, ultra-luxury development -- which is the brainchild of the award-winning, Naples-based family-owned developer, STOCK Development -- breaks ground this year (on track for completion in 2025) and is already being hailed as a “must-see.” Located at the intersection of Vanderbilt Beach Road and Gulf Shore Drive, it accentuates everything that makes Naples such an iconic, globally-treasured destination -- from Gulf of Mexico panoramas and access to the sands of Vanderbilt Beach, to views of the adjacent estuary, and use of a private, 22-slip full-service marina. STOCK Development, led by CEO Brian Stock, has built a two decades-long reputation on excellence, and is recognized as the number one luxury homebuilder in Southwest Florida. In addition to being revered for its high-end residences, the company is widely lauded for its luxury lifestyle amenities and unparalleled expertise which will permeate throughout the designs of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Naples. “This is a brand-new construction in a highly favored waterfront location where there is virtually no opportunity to buy ‘new’ or build new, for that matter,” said Stock. “Residents are going to have every imaginable amenity and convenience at their fingertips, coupled
with the legendary service of The Ritz-Carlton. For those buyers looking for that quintessential combination of ‘new,’ waterfront, and world-class offerings in the heart of Naples, this is the ultimate choice.” The architecture of The Residences involves a cadre of top visionaries: Curts Gaines Hall Jones (CGHJ) Architects, interior designer Cristian Pinedo of SUSURRUS, and landscape architectural firm Booth Design Group, as well as the venerated experience of a premier general contractor, Suffolk Construction, and engineer, J.R. Evans Engineering. The project is being constructed to the most current hurricane codes including impact glass throughout and will feature two levels of parking above the flood zone, giving it added protection from the elements. Comprising a collection of 128 beautifully-appointed homes, the transformative, six-acre enclave will be flanked by Vanderbilt Beach and the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Vanderbilt Lagoon to the north. Each residence starts at nearly 3,000 square feet and features at least three bedrooms – a marketplace rarity due to their size and scope. “There has always been an important directive that we’ve adhered to: create estate-like homes with casual, free-flowing spaces that extend outside, making them feel all the more connected to the environment,” says CGHJ President and CEO Robert Hall. Project amenities include an exclusive concierge, a marina, and a lush park with walking trails, a putting green, and covered pavilions. The property will also boast The Vanderbilt Club -- a 28,000-square-foot club with a

HAPPY IN HONDURAS ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS WITH ROSALIND CUMMINGS-YEATES AND RENÉE CHEREZ
Dangling over a plunging 90 foot waterfall, my life was now in the hands of the young guides who led our small group deep into the jungle of the coastal mountains of Honduras near the Rio Cangrejal. After a crash course, thorough and hands-on, I was expected to rappel backwards, leaning into my harness, steering my descent with a wide stance and footfalls against the slippery rocks. So, double-harnessed and helmeted I locked eyes with the guide who smiled and gave me the thumbs-up. With my gaze hazy from the spray and splashing water, I focused on listening for his directions, using my right hand to grip the rope just under my seat, releasing it to drop a little farther down the vertical canyon. The crash of the waterfall was deafening, so I just kept moving aggressively until I could jump into the river and scramble onto a sunny rock to do my victory dance which included a wide smile and expletives. Our “canyoning” continued as we gingerly hiked the banks and swam down the narrow river through the thick brush, climbing moss-covered ledges, jumping into pools, abseiling a few more challenging waterfalls and finally swimming up to the small dock
at Las Cascadas Lodge, the eco resort where our adventure had begun three hours earlier. With non-stop flights servicing the bay island of Roatán and coastal port city of La Ceiba, Honduras offers an adventure destination beyond the diving that the Caribbean barrier reef waters are known for. The people are warm and welcoming, honoring the growing tourism industry for this Central American country stretching along the Caribbean and Pacific between Guatemala and Nicaragua. Boutique hotels like the Ibagari Hotel and diving-centric hotels like Barefoot Cay on Roatán are gorgeous and comfortable outposts for exploring local culture, shopping, dining out and adrenaline-packed days. Opening this summer, the Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa will offer 126 guest rooms, inclusive of seven suites with balcony plunge pools overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The beachfront resort will feature four unique culinary concepts, on-site water desalination and other adaptive reuse and eco-friendly touches. Metropolitan Naples INTRODUCING A NEW ACTIVE AND VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD
ARTICLE BY NAPLES CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

O UR TOWN | R EAL ESTATE
Jerry Starkey and Fred Pezeshkan are not only long-time residents of Naples, but they have also helped shape, define and transform the city’s personality from a sleepy fishing village into a tropical urban oasis. Pezeshkan arrived in Naples in 1979 and built many residential, mixed-use and commercial structures including the beautiful Naples Bay Resort and some of the iconic buildings on Fifth Avenue South. Starkey arrived in 1988 and developed many large-scale luxury master-planned communities, golf courses, luxury hotels, marinas, traditional residences and high-rise homes throughout the state, as well as in others.
Now, the two creative and accomplished professionals have joined forces to develop the new mixed-use community, Metropolitan Naples, on the high-profile, 5.3-acre parcel located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue South and Davis Boulevard, just over the Gordon River bridge. Metropolitan Naples promises to be an active and vibrant neighborhood where people live, work and play. Over the past year significant infrastructure below ground and offsite was constructed including bringing utilities to the site, building the roadways, as well as redesigning and improving the drainage and water systems for the larger surrounding area. In December, construction cranes were moved to the site and vertical construction began on the first building in Metropolitan Naples, Ascent, a 15-story luxury residential rental tower with ground floor restaurant and retail spaces. This building is expected to be completed in 2024. The second 15-story tower will be the luxurious and beautiful Aura at Metropolitan Naples, which will feature 56 residences on the upper floors and the first level featuring the residential lobby and boutique retail shops. Aura is scheduled to be under construction this year and more information about these residences is available at the Metropolitan Naples Sales Gallery at 365 Fifth Avenue South next to The French restaurant. “When we began planning Metropolitan Naples, our research indicated there was a pent-up demand for quality, luxury residences in the downtown area,” stated Starkey. “Our goal was to address this demand by creating a new downtown neighborhood that incorporates a vibrant lifestyle, convenient to all downtown has to offer with its own retail, restaurant and office spaces to expand and complement downtown Naples.” The 15-story Aura condominium will also have incredible amenities, including an infinity pool and fitness center on the roof of its top floor and a 5th floor Club level with indoor and outdoor lounges, a business center, a guest suite, fire pits and a nice putting green for all to enjoy. “The combination of offering luxurious residences, amazing rooftop amenities and convenient onsite establishments just a quick elevator ride away, has fueled the high interest in Metropolitan Naples,” added Pezeshkan. Metropolitan Naples will consist of three buildings creating an active street scene of restaurants and boutique retail. The third building will also offer Class A offices above the ground floor restaurants and retail, and all three buildings have private enclosed garage parking with luxury residential units on the top floors where the Gulf, bay, treetop and urban views are spectacular.

Art That FeelsGood Quidley & Co presents Jojo Anavim ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
We love this piece by Jojo Anavim whose work blurs the line between mass consumerism and fine art. Anavim is also recognized for his commissions for NBA players, business moguls and top-charting musicians including Amar’e Stoudemire, Seth McFarlane, Selena Gomez, Big Sean, Sheldon Adelson, Paris Hilton and Daymond John. We sat down with the artist at Quidley & Company Fine Art Gallery, where you’ll find his art, to ask about his path and future. Sue G. Collins: For readers interested in investing in art or just one piece for their home, what questions would you ask them to find a good fit? Jojo Anavim: The first thing I ask any potential new collector is whether or not they love the piece. When you’re living with a piece of art, it’s important that it resonates with you whether that be aesthetically emotionally, spiritually or otherwise. My paintings have a lot of layers and the one thing I hear most after someone acquires one is they notice something new every time they look at the painting and as a result grow to love it more over time. SC: As a child you enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, creator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse and you’ve credited Baruch with instilling creative confidence that led you to embrace art as more than a hobby early in your life. Your work often depicts the nostalgia of the brands and packaging you were surrounded by during this time - down to the LifeSavers your grandmother would always carry in her purse. How much does nostalgia play into our decision-making process when finding art we love?

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE
JA: No matter how much material wealth one has I’ve found it’s impossible to recreate the happiness and excitement brought on early in your life, so naturally anything nostalgic to me as a kid seems to be an integral part of my visual language, and thankfully that translates to many of my collectors as well. SC: We love your rich and vibrant color palates, vintage ephemera, alongside subversive and playful imagery paying homage to contemporary art greats Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. What will gallery visitors see this month at Quidley? JA: I have a wide range in terms of my subject matter and the team at Quidley & Co always does an exceptional job of juxtaposing my works with other artists on the roster. You never know what you’re going to see next and I think that’s what makes it exciting. QuidleyAndCo.com
