Just as we were going to press, the hurricane hit our beloved community and ravaged much or our coastline. We salute your reslience and send our very best as you and your neighbors pick up the pieces. You have our unconditional support! In this season of giving thanks, we find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Naples Therapeutic Riding Center has a new leader, Naples native Martin de St Pierre. He shares his vision for the future and the legacy of the past. Our cover shot is in honor of our brave men and women of the military, that ascend to Naples every September for the Take a Soldier Fishing event. There are so many moving and important moments during this 3-day event, but the Collier County Sheriff's helicopter waving the American flag evokes the deepest patriotism. We're grateful for our beautiful and healthy Naples and all of our neighbors. Pickleball has taken SWF by storm, and we connected with a local sports star, Jose Pastrello, for his views on this popular activity. Special thanks to Toni Urtiaga, too for her passion and kindness. An easy four-hour drive from Naples is Hawks Cay, a resort on a quiet protected lagoon on Duck Key. To our intrepid travelers, Sara Casanova and Clint Miller, Hawks Cay felt like vacationing on a private island. “The setting is is gorgeous with a beautiful lagoon where you can paddle board and kayak, experience dolphins, and stay active…or not,” says Sara, an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Personal Trainer in Naples. “It was very romantic and relaxing, though it would also be a fun resort to visit with our extended family, too."

THE HOTEL: Reopened in August 2018 following a $50 million renovation, the 60-acre property includes 177 guestrooms and 250 two and three-bedroom villas, a full-service marina, six restaurants, a saltwater lagoon, five swimming pools, kid and teen clubs and a spa. Situated between Key Largo and Key West, enjoy offshore, flats and backcountry fishing; diving; kayaking; standup paddleboarding; tennis and a unique resort-based daily Dolphin Connection program.

We started with chicken wings and peel and eat shrimp (the best I’ve ever had). Cocktails were well balanced and the beer selection was excellent. Sixty-One Prime - Terry was an exceptional bartender. Nice, upscale setting. The NY strip and lobster tail special was a standout. Save room for key lime olive oil cake for dessert. The Marketplace - For morning coffee, pizza, snack, sunscreen, and necessities for a busy (or not!) day.

WHERE TO CHILL: Oasis Cay is the adults-only pool and bar. Tropical frozen drinks and food are served, poolside. True resort living!

We played pickleball every morning before hitting the fitness center where they have a nice variety of free weights and machines with a separate room to stretch and do core work. The front desk staff was helpful and welcoming. They also had a great selection of skincare products, notably one of my favorite brands Elemis at the spa. Bike around Duck Key for the local experience!

Angler and Ale - The bartender, Eric was lovely and very friendly. He gave us great recommendations on the menu.

Healthy Habit Harvest

HEALTHY HABITS TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON ARTICLE BY DR. DEB HOUK & MICHELLE MEJIA

THIS MONTH, WE GIVE THANKS FOR HEALTHY HABITS. Check out these three healthy habits from Dr. Deb Houk that you can take advantage of this Thanksgiving season and learn how they benefit your overall wellness! 1. Give thanks for exercise! If you want to decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke, one of the best ways to do so is to increase your physical activity. Exercising regularly is an amazing way to improve your health by normalizing many factors that easily get out of control, like your blood pressure, blood sugar, and your cholesterol. You don’t need to go crazy with the exercise either, as even walking for 30 minutes, three to four times a week can substantially benefit your health! Exercise and increasing physical activity can also help you lose excess weight, which in turn decreases your risk of developing further negative hits to your health like diabetes and high blood pressure. Take a walk with your family after eating Thanksgiving dinner this year, and make exercise a habit going forward! 2. Give thanks for sleep! Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, stick to a pre-sleep routine, avoid technology (cell phones, TV) prior to sleep, and sleep in a cool, quiet, and dark environment. Sleep disorders like insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are shown to negatively affect heart health, leading to an increased risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death. Fatigue by itself is considered an impairment like alcohol and drugs, can lead to depression and mental health issues, and has significant consequences for those who are sleep deprived. 3. Give thanks for water! Drinking enough water each day helps the body cleanse itself from toxins, keeps the mind clear, prevents constipation, improves circulation, and helps the body fight an array of illnesses. Water helps the body stay hydrated, which in turn allows the bodily functions to work at their best. Water also helps you absorb the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from the food you eat, giving you even more reason to stay hydrated.

AND, HERE IS WHERE MICHELLE MEJIA IS FINDING HEALTH AND CONTENTMENT THIS MONTH. I love eating out. Growing up, my father was a talented chef who spent his time here in Naples and in the Northeast. As someone who grew up in the restaurant industry and even cooked professionally for two years, I’m happy to share that I’ve always had a healthy relationship with food. I love eating, I love cooking, and if you see me downtown, chances are I’m also drinking an Aperol spritz or a glass of whiskey with my dinner. Something that people ask me about is whether or not I diet or exercise, and what I do in general to maintain my health. The truth is that I don’t think about my health all that much. I don’t obsess about it. I don’t restrict myself from anything I want to eat or drink. The answer is that I’ve developed a few great habits that I continuously rely on that work well for me. One thing is that I don’t eat meat. I cut that from my diet over 16 years ago. I eat fish when I go out, otherwise, I eat predominantly vegetarian and mostly healthy. A second thing I do is use intermittent fasting and do a full cleanse at least twice a year. For example, every year just before Easter, I fast for about 3 days. The third thing that I routinely do is use meditation daily and attend an intense meditation retreat every year for four days straight. This helps me to become aware, pay attention to my body, and feed it what it needs in order to have great energy and thrive. For me, it’s all about balance, and using these tools allows me to still eat out and have fun.

PIERRE Naples Therapeutic Riding Center (NTRC), provides therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-facilitated group services to children and adults with physical, social and mental health needs. Recently, the group welcomed local non-profit leader, Martin de St. Pierre, who has nearly 30 years of wealth management, business development, and fundraising experience, as Executive Director.

Q: YOU HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE NAPLES COMMUNITY SERVING ON A VARIETY OF BOARDS RELATED TO THE ARTS, EDUCATION AND CHILDREN. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW GIG! A: I arrive around 7:15 each day. It’s very quiet and I start my day with coffee and walk around the property. Our property team is usually here by then turning out horses and getting the property ready ahead of programs. Each horse has its own personality. Just like us, some are early risers and some take some time to get going. I love them all but will admit that I visit Sampson and Armor more often. We also have two very cute miniature horses, Raisin and Itty Bitty and it’s impossible not to smile when you see them.

Q: YOU HAVE BEEN IN NAPLES FOR 42 YEARS AND HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF WATCHING THE NTRC GROW AND FLOURISH. A: It was around 25 years ago when Naples Equestrian Challenge, the original name for NTRC, came about. It was a small operation with a few borrowed horses and a handful of volunteers but with a big mission. Twentyfive years later we are almost 10 acres with 14 horses, 11 buildings, and 150 riders each week.

Q: NO STRANGER TO EQUESTRIAN LIFE, YOU RODE A HORSE FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN YOU WERE 10 YEARS OLD. A: I have been fortunate throughout my life to ride quite a bit on trails and beaches. I am surrounded here by a great staff, many with a lifetime of horse experience so I get to learn something every day about horse health, behavior and training. Horses are quite amazing. Given their size and power, they are flight animals that prefer to run more than engage. We ask them to do many things that are not natural for them but they have an intuitive sense of understanding of what we need them to do (with proper training) and they deliver with a sense of calm and empathy that is quite remarkable. M ission Possible Naples Take a Soldier Fishing

Naples Take a Soldier Fishing is a local charity designed to show gratitude to active and veteran American military heroes through entertainment and acts of appreciation. Annually, they host a weekend-long morale-boosting celebration to show the men and women in uniform that they are honored for their sacrifices. The program began 15 years ago with a handful of boats out of the Goodland Bay marina. Now, every year 150 active military troops (most of whom are special operations) are celebrated on a fleet of donated charters, with a kick-off of patriotic proportions at Hamilton Harbor. The NTASF leadership, Steve and Jamie Loyd, are a driving force and work tirelessly all year to make this celebration happen. “We believe we are the most patriotic community in the United States!” says acting chief Rich Hampton of the Collier County Sheriff's Office and an United States AirForce veteran. “The irony for us as volunteers is we are doing our best to show these warriors our thanks with the gifts of 5-star lodging, meals, and experience, they can’t thank us enough. The looks on their faces when they arrive in the lobby, when we greet them at the check-in…throughout the whole weekend, they are the most grateful people you will EVER meet! When you see a 19-year-old young man fresh out of Ranger experience see the community's gratitude…it simply moves you!” The military participants are paired with a boat captain who is their guide for the trip. With two divisions, offshore and backwater, soldiers are exposed to competitive and professional waterways. The fishing tournament kicks off with the national anthem, blessing of the fleet, and a spectacular aerial flyover by the Collier County Sheriff. This signifies the start of the friendly competition of this special annual invitation-only fishing tournament for our troops. Later, the exciting live weigh-in begins with fishing champions crowned. This particular closet was one of my favorite projects to work on. I was brought on from the very beginning of the project and was able to work on this client's dream closet from the ground up with the talented Carrie Bringham Design and Ruffino Cabinetry. Working closely with my client to incorporate everything she could ever dream up, this closet has some fun perks for sure! One of my favorite features of this closet is the skylight that gives her wardrobe a chance to shine from natural light, beaming from above during the day and then twinkling under the stars at night. We made great use of the deep shelving with pullouts for her more casual shoes so they can be seen and put away easily. We inserted multiple valet hooks into the wood for a custom look that allowed for easy hanging for her OOTD (Outfit of the Day). Another important feature for my client was to have a back trifold mirror that allows her to see her whole look from every angle… isn’t that just something we all need! One of the most fabulous parts of this closet though is the hidden vanity tucked behind her large mirror that allows my client to get ready for her day or evening in complete privacy. To round it out we made sure to incorporate plenty of drawers to eliminate the need for a dresser in the bedroom. This is a trend that I see happening much more often and allows her to get fully dressed in the privacy of her own space and ultimately provides her with a grand reveal of their final look. “Pickleball?” I remember thinking when I first heard of the game. I’m sure I scoffed at the name and at the idea of hitting a weird wiffle ball over a short net on a court much smaller than my beloved tennis courts. A tennis player tennis since I was five years old, at forty I’m now Director of Court Sports at Quail Creek Country Club here in Naples. Tennis has been a huge part of my life and I still avidly compete in our Pro League at a 5.5 level. But pickleball? I was sure it was a fad, soon to go the way of fidget spinners and twerking. Until I played. A member of my former club introduced me to the game at a local park. At first, older guys and women in crazy outfits were killing me. Wait a minute, I thought, I played college tennis and teach the game for a living. But with my strong tennis skills, I was soon competing against the higher-level pickleball players. And loving it. It helped my tennis net game, my focus, my footwork, and my desire to broaden my network of sports-loving friends. Oh, and it was fun! By the time I accepted my current position in 2019, I realized that an upcoming racquet sports redesign at Quail Creek had to include the addition of six new pickleball courts, not the four that club management had planned. From skeptic to enthusiast, I had already become certified to teach pickleball and was eager to introduce the game at my new club. I’d heard grumbling from many tennis players and teaching pros: It’s too loud. They’re taking away tennis courts and converting them to pickleball. It’s not really a sport. You don’t get enough exercise. But I saw that many of the top pickleball players nationally had transitioned from high-level tennis to the newer game,

fueled by the challenge of mastering a second sport and thriving on the competition as it became the country’s fastest-growing athletic pastime. It’s estimated that today nearly five million people are playing pickleball in the U.S. alone. Its growth has averaged 11.5 percent a year since 2017, with no signs of slowing down. In pickle-crazy Naples, we have access to nearly 100 public courts in parks across the city, with many more at private tennis and country clubs. And that number keeps increasing. The best news for novices: You can just show up. At most facilities, pickleball is a pick-up game with no need for reservations or partners. You’ll find that players are, for the most part, friendly and encouraging, eager to help teach the game and its quirky rules. Unlike tennis, players of all ages can pick up pickleball in a very short time, incorporating the nuances as they enjoy meeting new people and gaining confidence. At my club, we host mixers, exhibition matches, pro-ams, a pro league, and clinics, many of which are combined with simultaneous tennis events. A high percentage of our tennis players now play pickleball too and some of our pickleball devotees have become tennis players. Even golfers can be spotted hitting the court for a quick game before or after the links. As we age, pickleball, with its smaller surface, can prolong our active lives. And, because it’s easier to master at any age, we have whole families turn out to play together. I’ve also found that if novices start with professional instruction and some fitness tips, they’re much less likely to experience injuries. If you told me five years ago that I’d be promoting pickleball, I’d have said you were crazy. Now I’m just crazy about the benefits this game with the funny name offers to our clubs, parks, and players of all levels and ages.
