amy moglia heuerman NAPLES INSPIRES AMY MOGLIA HEUERMAN’S LIFE AND ART. Since moving to the town full time in 2013 after many years of extended visits, the lifelong artist has made a substantial impact on both the art scene and in philanthropic circles, achieving recognition for her paintings, generosity and ebullient spirit. The versatile artist originally gained national recognition as a successful children’s illustrator of games, puzzles, toys, and books through her Bear Hug Designs company, which she retired after a 20-plus-year run upon moving to Naples. Living close to the Gulf awakened her innate passion for sky and sea, now fully realized in her stunning seascape canvases. Her paintings are often oversized, richly layered abstracts that evoke serenity. Dominated by a palette of blues in infinite hues, the paintings invite viewers to emotionally respond to the many moods and colors of clouds and rolling tides, rendered with her mastery of palette knives, scrapers, and brushes.

During the pandemic and quarantine, the versatile, multi-talented artist was moved to paint a series of whimsical figures that express the “alone but together” zeitgeist of the times. The solitary figures, pictured singly on the canvas or in physically distanced groups, have been greeted enthusiastically by the local media and art collectors. Heuerman’s ethos for giving and community involvement has led her to donate her time and talent to organizations such as Guadalupe Center. She was a fixture at the Immokalee-based Center for three months while hand-painting a 30-foot mural of a flowering garden in the children’s reading room, which is now named in Heuerman’s honor. She was a featured artist on the 2019 Artis-Naples’ annual studio tour, and in several auction events organized by the Legal Aid Society. She also supports the American Cancer Society and the Naples Botanical Garden, where she serves on the Sustaining Leadership Council. Heuerman is represented at the Arsenault Studio & Banyan Art Gallery, owned by prominent Naples artist Paul Arsenault and his wife, Eileen, on Third Street South. She also welcomes visitors into her studio by appointment. Learn more at AmyArt.net.

NL: YOUR PICNICS ARE PICTURE-PERFECT. WHAT DRIVES YOUR THEMES? C&M: Our picnics are carefully customized for each individual client’s experience. We carefully curate themes so that our clients can visualize the colors, textures and overall feel of their picnic. What drives our themes is our passion for bringing this experience to Southwest Florida. We named our themes after places that locals can resonate with. We want our guests to fall in love with what they see. Our picture perfect picnics provide the opportunity to capture a memory that is unforgettable. Our favorite part of this business is the creative aspect. So naturally we can come up with various themes for our picnics pretty frequently. To make it simple we narrowed it down to five main themes: The Coastal Appeal, Boho Beach, Romantic , La Bonita and Antique Me! NL: WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR PLANNING A PICNIC AND HOW MUCH ADVANCE NOTICE DO YOU LIKE? C&M: We keep our process simple, tailored and connected. When a client wants to book with us, we Complimentary boho beach umbrella, hand fans, sparkling waters, and picture perfect parasol umbrellas meant to keep guests cool during those warm sunny days
introduce ourselves so they become familiar with the person who will design their picnic. Our clients book in 3 easy steps- they select the package, the theme and the location. Once we’ve developed a perfect experience we communicate regularly with our clients so they stay informed with the plans. We ask for one week notice so we can plan accordingly.
NL: TELL US ABOUT A FEW UNIQUE PICNICS YOU’VE DESIGNED. C&M: This year we’ve helped clients plan proposals, romantic date nights, graduation celebrations and anniversaries just to name a few. One of our most unique picnic requests was from a thoughtful mother whose daughter’s original wedding date had been canceled for reasons out of their control. She didn’t want the date to be remembered as a gloomy day, but rather a special day so she planned a picnic with us. We worked with her to determine small details like wedding colors, the bride and groom’s favorite drinks, as well as favorite flowers and snacks. This allowed us to make a memorable experience on their original wedding date. It’s moments like these that make Coast and Mingle proud to be a part of people’s special life events. NL: YOU’RE A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS. WHY IS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA A GOOD PLACE FOR YOUR HOME AND BUSINESS? C&M: Naples naturally has the perfect landscape for our business. There is no place like Naples which makes it easy for our business to call it home. The company owners are Shawn Everett and Miles Duffy with creative designers, Monette Everett and Kayse Duffy at the helm.

THE NOSTALGIAC WORK OF TRACEY SYLVESTER HARRIS INVITES YOU TO STEP BACK IN TIME AND SOAK UP THE SUN. You can see her collection of antique postcards in play throughout the exhibition opening at Quidley and Company. Tracey's figures are enjoying life in the sunshine, time at the beach, and moments of solitude. Often we see just part of a figure, but we are immediately transported to a tranquil moment by the water. The larger pieces are stunning and offer a statement with a pop of color. "In addition to our show, we are excited to display the works by our talented roster of artists. Our gallery is always receiving something new. We get daily deliveries from our artists, so there's always something fresh to see," says Chris Quidley.

While Pathways celebrates the accomplishments of one child, there are hundreds more that may never have the same opportunity. In 2019, the state released startling statistics. 42 percent of children in Florida’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program were not prepared to advance. Those numbers are much higher in communities like Immokalee where it’s estimated there are close to 1100 underserved youngsters. A study from the National Institute of Health revealed adults from low-income families who had been engaged in early education programs achieved higher education levels than those receiving alternate interventions. They had higher incomes, lower crime rates and fewer reports of depression. The study concluded education can improve the overall health of the community as these students make better choices. So what does the future hold for Isaac? No doubt he will continue to face challenges but being prepared with vital language, literary and social skills, he is certain to stand a better chance at realizing his dreams.
