LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Year of Becoming As a new year begins here in Music City, I’m reminded of something simple but powerful: growth doesn’t happen in loud, dramatic moments—it happens in the quiet choices we make every single day. And if there’s one thing the past year taught me, it’s that health and wellness are less about achieving perfection and more about staying committed to becoming a better version of ourselves, one small decision at a time. This year, I took on the 75 Hard challenge, expecting it to be a test of physical grit. What I discovered was something far deeper. Yes, there were the daily workouts, the strict diet, the gallon of water, and the pages read. But the real transformation happened in the mental and spiritual space— when I had to figure out how to honor a demanding routine without sacrificing the most important parts of my life: my wife, Kat, and our two daughters. That meant getting up earlier than usual and fitting in workouts late at night when the day was finally done—finding windows of time that didn’t take away from family moments. In those pockets of effort, I realized that discipline isn’t a restriction. It’s a gift we give ourselves, and indirectly, the people we love. As we step into 2026, I want to encourage you to reflect on what wellness means in your own story. Maybe it’s pursuing a goal that’s been quietly tugging at you. Maybe it’s building healthier habits, caring for your mind, or reconnecting with your purpose. Whatever it looks like, I hope this year inspires you to take that next step. Our Health & Wellness issue is filled with stories, experts, and ideas to help guide and energize your journey. My wish is that it reminds you of your strength, your potential, and the incredible things that can happen when you choose to show up for yourself. Here’s to a year of growth, balance, and becoming the very best version of who you’re meant to be.

"...WE FOCUS ON AN ELEVATED EXPERIENCE, NATURAL RESULTS, AND HEALTHY SKIN.”
November meant CMA week in Nashville, and the city was alive with energy–and so were the spray tan guns. As artists prepared to accept their awards, some for the very first time, and managers and industry executives got ready for Nashville’s busiest week of the year, one business was at the center of keeping the stars and their support teams looking tan and feeling confident: Pure Glow Nashville. Pure Glow is Nashville’s newest airbrush spray tan salon that delivers a natural-looking, hand applied glow to skin–without harsh chemicals or damaging UV rays. Whether it’s for a celebration, a work event, or just a mid-winter pick-me-up, Pure Glow clients feel confident in their own skin. Amanda Wilson opened Pure Glow in September, but before that, she spent 15 years climbing the corporate ladder in the hustle of retail merchandising where she was a buyer for businesses like Sam’s Club and Dollar General. From a high-powered corporate background to being the owner of a small, beauty-focused business in the heart of Capitol View, Wilson is a woman who’s done it all. The world of beauty and aesthetics had always intrigued her, so when she was presented with the opportunity to leave CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M US I C C I T Y

“I WANTED TO OWN SOMETHING THAT MADE WOMEN—AND MEN—FEEL CONFIDENT. PURE GLOW ALLOWS ME TO CONNECT WITH EVERY CLIENT, HELPING THEM LEAVE FEELING THE BEST THEY’VE EVER FELT, BECAUSE WHEN YOU FEEL CONFIDENT IN YOUR OWN SKIN, YOU TRULY CAN TAKE ON THE WORLD.”
Bentonville, Arkansas for Nashville, Tennessee to lead the beauty desk at Dollar General in 2019, she jumped at the chance. As her daughter continued to grow and her family continued to deepen their roots in Nashville, Wilson was faced with a choice: should she pursue her dreams of becoming a VP at a retail corporation, or should she chase after creativity and venture out on her own? Of course, the beauty of the Nashville community and the draw of creative liberty and independence kept her here–and led her to open Pure Glow. Wilson was particularly drawn to Pure Glow because of the innovation it brings to the airbrush tanning segment as well as the customer experience. She was excited about the ability to shake things up in the beauty space, especially when it came to sunless tanning. “When I was in high school and college, you went to the tanning bed. And then the sunless tanning booths came out, and you could go get a spray tan from a machine,” Wilson remembers. “And then there was this whole boom of girls doing it mobile, and they’d come to your home to spray tan you!” Essentially, Wilson

realized the consumer’s desire to have bronze, glowy skin wasn't a trend that was going away anytime soon. She laughs, “We will never stop wanting to be tan!” Seeing how much innovation there was to be had when it came to keeping the glow of a tan but maintaining healthy skin and a much more luxurious, warm experience was a must for her. “There are so many things about self tanning at home that aren’t so great,” Wilson says, referencing the risk of inconsistent application, streaking, and often undesired or unpredictable results. “What I loved most about Pure Glow was the experience.” The Pure Glow salon is warm, welcoming, and chic–much more like stepping into an upscale spa than your traditional spray tanning salon. “You walk into the treatment room and there’s a place to hang your jacket, your clothing, there’s a place to charge your phone and place your jewelry,” Wilson says. “We’re breaking down barriers. The experience is much more elevated–you should never feel uncomfortable!” In addition to being a high-end experience, Pure Glow focuses on skin health, with formulations made from organic, non-toxic
ingredients. Their unique solution develops in tandem with the skin’s natural undertones, leaving clients with a natural glow that is flattering–and never orange. More than anything, Wilson is thrilled she took the leap to own her own business because of the personal connections she gets to make every single day with the people that walk through her salon doors, whether it’s with her clients or her team. “Pure Glow allows me to be myself. It allows me to give back to each and every client so hopefully when they leave here they feel the best they’ve ever felt,” Wilson says, smiling. “I wanted to own something that made women– and men–feel confident,” Wilson says. “And who doesn’t feel like they can rule the world when they have a fierce spray tan?” Pure Glow Nashville is located at 19 Josephine Holloway Ave in between Barre3 and Sweat440. Follow them at @pureglownashville, and call or text (615) 535-2434 to book your next tan.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
22
M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | WE LLN E SS
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”
New Year. New Chapter. Unfiltered conversations for designing what’s next– in family, lifestyle, and business.

Dr. Matthew Smith is the founder and lead dentist at Capitol View Dental. He brings a unique balance of precision, artistry, and empathy to his work. After completing his DDS at Meharry Medical College, the Michigan native opened his own practice in the Capitol View neighborhood to offer elevated, minimally invasive care in a warm, modern environment. He specializes in dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and smile design, always with an emphasis on honest communication and patient empowerment. Before becoming the highly sought-after dentist he is today, Dr. Smith’s journey began in a different spotlight—music. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Classical Guitar and, by January 2013, was working full-time in the music industry, balancing roles in administration, teaching, and performing. All the while, he was completing science prerequisites, driven by a growing passion for dentistry. Even with his love for music, Nashville wasn’t on his map until dental school called him to the city. Since
graduating in 2019, Dr. Smith has spent six years refining his craft, caring for patients, and learning from respected mentors. Now, he’s proudly taken on the next step: opening a practice of his own. Offering a full range of dental services under one roof, Capitol View Dental gets you the care you need—when you need it. From preventive cleanings and digital diagnostics to implants, veneers, and Botox, their treatments are guided by a minimally invasive philosophy — which means they work conservatively, preserving your natural smile and only recommending what’s truly necessary. With same-day smile design services, digital X-rays, Invisalign, and a compassionate approach to care, their team is there to make every step feel easy and personalized. Capitol View Dental also values the understanding of oral health and how it integrates with the rest of the body, offering regular blood pressure checks and oral cancer screenings. When it comes to the new year, Dr. Smith encourages patients to invest in their oral health. CONTINUED >

“PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN INCREASING THEIR CONFIDENCE, AND [SMILES] ARE THE FIRST THING PEOPLE SEE.”
“Fear [and] anxiety sometimes stops people from coming to the dentist… the main thing that I always tell my patients when they show up is ‘thank you for coming in for X, Y, Z reason,’” he shares. “I tell [them] we meet them where they are and take them to where they want to go… people are interested in increasing their confidence, and [smiles] are the first thing people see.”

Designing every detail of their office with patients in mind, Capitol View Dental has everything from a welcoming front desk team to noise-canceling headphones, warm blankets, and modern treatment technology. Their space is intentional and was built to feel more like a boutique than a traditional dental office. Whether you’re there for a routine checkup or a major transformation, they will take the time to explain your options and build a relationship that lasts. Speaking on what the support from his patients and the Nashville community has meant to him, Dr. Smith shares, “It's humbling... I have patients who followed me from when I worked in Mount Juliet—patients who kept up with me and trust me as a person. When I ask [new] patients how [they hear about us], it’s so important, because sometimes it's word of mouth, sometimes it's an ad, and sometimes it's from [another] patient… and that's what I have always wanted.” Dr. Smith has loved getting to know his new neighbors in Capitol View and getting involved in the community! Whether it’s your first visit in years or your regular check-in, Capitol View Dental is here to support your goals and help you feel proud of your smile. To schedule your visit and experience what modern, relationship-based dentistry really feels like, visit capitolviewdental.com and keep up with them on socials @capitolviewdental.

Inside the Nashville 2026 Antiques & Garden Show A Conversation with the 2026 Show Co-Chairs, Paula Kinard and Phyllis Vandewater. AS CO-CHAIRS OF THE ANTIQUES & GARDEN SHOW, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR VISION FOR THIS YEAR’S EVENT?
When we began dreaming up this year’s Show, we kept coming back to the idea of classic American style. The designer who embodied that best for us was Ralph Lauren. His work instantly evokes a sense of American elegance, and once David Lauren and Lauren Bush Lauren were on board, the vision really started to take shape. What we didn’t think about when we first started planning is that 2026 is America’s 250th anniversary, which is so serendipitous.
EACH YEAR, THE EVENT PERFECTLY SHOWCASES ANTIQUES, GARDEN DESIGN, AND LIFESTYLE INSPIRATION. HOW DID YOU CURATE THIS YEAR’S THEME OF AMERICAN ELEGANCE?
We were guided by words like iconic, timeless and chic – touchstones that influenced everything from the Show fabrics to the overall atmosphere we wanted to create. We also loved the idea of featuring an all-American lineup of speakers and partners, each of them representing their own version of American elegance.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HO ME + D E SIGN
THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND SPECIAL GUESTS OFTEN SET THE TONE FOR THE EVENT. WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FOR AS YOU SELECTED THIS YEAR’S LINEUP?
From the beginning, we knew we wanted to showcase iconic designers that represented everything classic American style and design can be. Once we had our Keynote speakers – David Lauren and Lauren Bush Lauren – the rest of the lineup fell into place very naturally. For the Landscape Design Lecture, we were drawn to Charles Stick and Ben Page, because when you think of classic American gardens, that’s exactly what they do. Preston Bailey is another exciting talent for the Floral Lecture; he was one of the original superstar event designers, and his work blends celebration with floral artistry. His sense of “floral fantasy” brings a completely different creative dimension to the Show. Our Design Panel also truly reflects the full range of American design. It was important to us to spotlight that balance between modern and traditional with GACHOT and Meyer Davis. Including Will Meyer and Gray Davis is especially meaningful since they’re both from Tennessee.
WHAT CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT THIS YEAR’S SHOW? ANY NEW FEATURES FROM YEARS PAST?
We’re excited to introduce a few new elements this year. David Lauren will be hosting a meet-and-greet instead of a traditional book signing, which we think will feel much more personal for attendees. We’ve also named Honorary Chairs for both the Preview Party and Bourbon Party, which we’re really excited about. For the Preview Party, we have Kate Brodsky whose late mother, the renowned decorator Suzanne Rheinstein, designed our 2026 signature fabric pattern, Garden Roses from Lee Jofa. Our Bourbon Party Honorary Co-Chairs are a fun duo, House & Parties Founder and Creative Director Rebecca Gardner and Southern Living Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans. We also have Antiques & Garden Show branded tote bags this year! Those can be purchased at antiquesandgardenshow.com. CONTINUED >

HOW DO YOU BLEND TRADITION WITH TRENDS AND NEW INSPIRATION?
For us, it’s about showcasing the full spectrum of American style and design. The Laurens represent the height of timeless tradition, while our Design Panel brings fresh, on-trend perspectives that feel exciting and current. By blending both, we’re able to highlight the best of classic and contemporary America and offer something that appeals to a wide range of attendees.
“We were guided by words like iconic, timeless and chic – touchstones that influenced everything” THE SHOW ATTRACTS TOP-TIER DEALERS, CREATORS, AND GARDEN EXPERTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WHAT CRITERIA GUIDED YOUR SELECTION PROCESS THIS YEAR?
We rely on the expertise of our longtime Dealer Chairs, who truly understand what resonates with our audience. They’re thoughtful about curating a mix of antique and horticultural selections and price points so there’s something for every attendee. On the garden side, our fantastic Garden Chair leads the selection of landscape designers — he’s a true magic maker.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE ATTENDEES WALK AWAY FEELING OR THINKING AFTER EXPERIENCING THE SHOW THIS YEAR?
More than anything, we hope people walk away feeling inspired. We want them to enjoy the beauty and energy of the Show and leave with a sense of excitement and possibility.
LOOKING AHEAD, HOW DO YOU HOPE THE SHOW CONTINUES TO EVOLVE, AND WHAT LEGACY DO YOU WANT THE 2026 EVENT TO LEAVE?
We hope the Show continues to inspire appreciation for the beautiful designs showcased by its speakers and partners each year, and to discover and create beauty in their own lives. As the 2026 Show builds on this legacy, we also want to inspire people to explore new and unexpected corners of the world for fresh ideas and inspiration.
