A Love Letter To Nashville My husband and I moved to Nashville four years ago from New York. We have been incredibly fortunate to have come from strong, loving families. Both of our parents live down the street from each other, both of our siblings have children that are our kids' same age, but the unfortunate thing is that they all live in Kansas City. Doing life away from the ones that we love most is difficult on many different levels, and at times might not make the most sense when you weigh out the pros and cons. Living in Nashville for us is something that might not make sense on paper, but we have peace about. There have been many different scenarios in my life where I have had to rely on my intuition, prayer, and my faith to decide what the next steps look like. Moving to new cities, the right education for my girls, investing in certain relationships, exploring new opportunities, and even owning this publication are all acts of faith because there was a sense of peace. All that to say, not all situations have unfolded like I have expected, but I am so thankful for the city where I have ended up. The community of Nashville has been our family. It has allowed me and my family to put down roots, our friends have been people who we can lean on in every time of need, and at the end of the day... life can be really hard, and being able to feel at home is a peace that I hope everyone can possess. Chelsea Carter is a talented florist based here in Music City. After creating her brand Chelsea Carter Events in 2015, she and her husband – who also reigns in the entertainment industry – decided to leave Los Angeles and begin their journey south. Originally wanting to specialize in it all - from the wedding planning to the flower arrangements – Chelsea soon realized she had to choose what she was most passionate about and make that her grand focus. She explained that the deep connections formed with each client individually were what drew her to floral design. When it comes to her floral style, Chelsea deemed herself to favor “whimsical, seasonal, romantic, garden-inspired, loosely flowing blooms.” In addition to weddings, Chelsea’s work has been featured at high-profile events including The Governors Ball, Oscars and Country Music Awards. She credits these events for helping her “get a foundation for how to plan big events, work with lighting, and learn all the massive elements” that contribute to making her a unique florist. Although, Chelsea’s proudest achievement yet is her role as "Mom." With two young daughters and a son on the way, her priority is raising them up and teaching them the importance of creativity. Creating her home studio has helped her be able to do both - her daughters love to make their own arrangements in the studio, too! “Being a working mom and owning a small business while simultaneously raising small kids… I think that makes me who I am. I want my kids to see me working, to see me building something.”

Since moving to Nashville in 2021, Chelsea said she “loves being part of a city that feels like it's growing and evolving... Amongst the floral community, [we] lend each other vases or candles and help each other out. It really speaks to the people of Nashville." Husband-and-wife duo Tyler and Jackie Henson combined their love for helping others and began their very own partnership: The Henson Team.

Before the pair’s stories merged, Tyler had struggled with addiction and temporary homelessness. In his early twenties, he shared that

“DOING SOMETHING WE LOVE, TOGETHER, GIVES US A PURPOSE GREATER THAN OURSELVES.” The pair first met at a church in Nashville when Jackie was visiting her sister from Texas. At the time, she was studying at Texas A&M University. After hitting it off during their by-chance meeting, Tyler decided to book a flight to College Station to visit Jackie; it was on that trip they knew it was worth the distance – literally – and continued to pursue one another from hundreds of miles away. The couple knew being intentional would pay off in the end and over the course of the next year and a half, they were able to lay down a strong foundation based off conversation, frequent FaceTime calls and a lot of dedication.

he “spent a lot of days waking up not knowing where he was going to sleep that night.” He also struggled financially, recalling the days when his phone bill would get cut off. After years of doubt, Tyler credits his faithfulness to God for setting him free from addiction. After they wed in Spring of 2016, Tyler and Jackie decided to buy a home together - the decision they credit to leading them to their real estate venture. Although they were about to be new homeowners and didn’t have much experience in that industry, they were thrilled to be in the position to own a home. At the time, Tyler was working as CONTINUED >

an operations manager for a transportation company and Jackie was working in insurance sales. The newlyweds talked it over and ultimately decided Tyler would get a real estate license of his own, with Jackie cheering him on every step of the way. She didn’t anticipate leaving her job and being involved, but ultimately picked up the role of client experience specialist so the pair could spend more time with one another. With their company growing at a rapid pace, Jackie got her license and the pair have been taking the real estate industry by storm ever since. The couple had a new level of appreciation for one another once they started The Henson Team; getting to witness their strengths and stressors at another angle helped them understand the other even better: “The challenges bring even greater growth.”

When asked for their greatest piece of advice, Jackie shared that it is important “remembering you’re on the same team and you’re there to make each other better… iron sharpens iron - it’s a team effort and we’re both growing in order to serve our clients better.” Tyler and Jackie have recorded several episodes of their own podcast, Two Is Greater Podcast, that highlights everything from working with your spouse to the specifics of their own love story. “It’s a very surreal experience. You never see yourself as someone who Dr. Tamia Potter of Nashville comes from a long line of nurses, and in high school, she became a certified nursing student. During college, while working at a nursing home and hospital, she interacted with many neurosurgical patients, and that changed the course of her life. “I realized that I really wanted to take care of that patient population and explore what neurosurgery had to offer,” she says. Today, she is the first Black female neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

“It’s a very surreal experience,” says Dr. Potter. “You never see yourself as someone who makes history. You just see yourself as doing what you love and want to do. It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve been very welcomed at Vanderbilt, and I’ve been able to inspire so many people who want to go down this path.” Her advice to others like herself: Be prepared to accept that the journey is going to be different. “It really requires a true understanding of who you are and what’s important to you,” she says. “Your lifestyle is going to be different from other people and the way you go about things is going to be different, especially if you’re a Black or Brown person. Just embrace who you are and the journey you’re taking.” Fortunately, the 26-year-old has had a lot of support along the way, not only from her family, but also from high school, college and medical school instructors and deans. “They all tried to challenge me and to make sure I had everything I needed to make it to the next level,” she says. “I didn’t get where I am today all by myself, so I thank everyone who helped with my journey.” Even though the demands of her profession are quite strenuous, Dr. Potter still finds time to enjoy her life outside of work, and her personal style can vary greatly. “I’m a sneaker girl, but at the same time I love a good edgy outfit,” she says. “I love florals, dresses, skirts and shorts, it just depends on the occasion.” While her schedule also doesn’t give her a lot of time to shop, she stays on top of fashion trends through social media. “A lot of the pages I follow are fashion-related that show what people are wearing, what’s trendy, and new hairstyles,” she says. She also carves out time to stay in shape. “I’m really big into fitness, and do powerlifting and aerial dancing,” she says. Dr. Potter is looking forward to the rest of her journey, and Nashville seems fortunate to have her.

Nashville artist Shane Miller has been compared to the tonalism artist William Turner. Both artists have a similar thread of creativity when it comes to their depictions of nature. Shane's work is “an ode to the tonalism movement.” The tonalism movement first began during the 1880s. The style captures the mood and atmosphere of nature by using colors and light to create an essence of emotion on canvas. The landscapes represent emotion, rather than a real representation of a certain place. The colors are moody and can even be described as solemn, yet peaceful. Shane uses oils on canvas in the colors of cayenne, umbers, ultramarine blues, earth tones, and shades of gray transforming the viewer into a dreamy and tranquil world. The flow of colors disappears into each other in no distinct pattern or lines. The effect is a foggy and seamless blend of shapes of land or water in a beautiful natural setting. Shane's works are full of “dreams and silent emotions.” He creates from his imagination. He uses light and the transmission of light to illuminate the world he paints. When painting water scenes, he expresses that the water represents the movement of time and the passing of life. These scenes can give the viewer, “a sense of peace away from life,” says Shane. Forbes magazine praised his work saying he, “evoke[s] a sense of nostalgia and a longing for something distant and intangible.” Shane has been a professional artist for seven years and is based in Nashville. His work is shown in five galleries spanning the southeast, across Tennessee and South Carolina. Painting to him does not require inspiration each time. "It takes more discipline than that," he suggests. He hones his craft by being in his studio six days a week and painting every day. Painting to Shane is a form of meditation, but he says he tries not to stay too comfortable with his art process. He thinks comfort is “a slow death.” “If you’re comfortable, you are not growing and evolving. And art is always a movement, changing from time to time as the world evolves,” he says. Shane has no training in art, but says he “stumbled into it” after playing guitar and being musically inclined to art in that way. He is a self-taught artist. After trial and error, Shane discovered a style that resonated with him. And so, he began his professional career as an artist. CONTINUED >

At first, he says his art was created for family and friends, then friends of friends, then displayed in coffee houses and then in galleries. He established an online presence through Instagram and his website with a portfolio of his work. His artistry grew organically and when he realized people loved and enjoyed his work, the door was open to create more. Although his work is primarily residential, Shane says he is eager to showcase his ballads of art to the public setting. For inquiries, appointments with him for viewing his collection of work in his studio can be scheduled. His 450 or so square foot studio is filled with natural light and high ceilings with paintings on every wall, on easels, and stored for viewing. His work is currently displayed in these five galleries: Bennett Galleries in Nashville, Gallery 1401 in Chattanooga, District Gallery in Knoxville, Mary Martin Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, and Art and Light Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina. He is also planning to show his work out West. As art is moving more from gallery gatekeepers to a direct-tocustomer artist-to-client approach, Shane is capitalizing on social media to build his clientele and portfolio. Social media is a new way of getting art out there and accessible to those who admire it. Shane’s art is typically considered beautiful, peaceful, meaningful and emotional. He states his art is never planned. It evolves as he paints and will be what it will be. From-Scratch Pasta

what you need

Yield: 1 pound

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. Dark Chocolate Truffles what you need 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting

what you do 1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate.
