LIFESTYLE LETTER

Well-Being In A New Year A New Year is a time of optimism, planning and resoluteness. There’s a feeling that maybe this year we’ll make the changes we’ve been meaning to: more rest, better eating habits, more exercise, better relationships or a new job. New Year’s Day is about taking a moment to get ready for everything that is about to unfold. One of my favorite things about a new year is letting our kids stay up late to watch the New York City ball drop in Times Square. Today, it’s about living better for longer, not just about living longer. The concept of “vitality span” seems to be reshaping wellness priorities and driving interest in preventive health solutions. From cellular health supplements and protein-packed functional foods to joint-support formulas, people are investing in ways to maintain strength and independence as they age. There are some indicators that 2026 is shaping up to be the year of "soft wellness," meaning a gentler, more mindful approach to health. Regardless of how you're trying to stay well, we wish you the best in results for this new year, as we share this, our annual wellness edition. Happy, healthy 2026!

Club Pilates Provides Xponential Fitness And Then Some In Murfreesboro

Exercise For Every-Body Pilates is the path to a fuller, more satisfying physical existence, confirms Tanja Whitman, franchisee co-owner of local Club Pilates studios, along with her husband, Jared Whitman. "We believe being in control of your body helps you to be in control of your life. And best of all, we believe you can start anytime," she adds. "No matter age or level of fitness, there’s a Pilates class that will work for you, including those recovering from injuries," Jared assures.

She says Pilates' programs provide many benefits: improved strength; increased flexibility; better posture; providing a full-body workout with minimal stress on body joints; enhanced balance and coordination; building lean muscle mass and toning bodies; strengthening muscles that support spines while improving alignment and reducing risks of back pain; increasing mind-body connection; and improving breathing and circulation. Club Pilates is a part of Xponential Fitness, a global franchisor of health and wellness brands that deliver pilates, barre, cycling, dance, yoga, boxing, strength training, stretching and metabolic health. Founded in 2017, Xponential has 3,000-plus global locations. Murfreesboro Club Pilates, 3266 Memorial Blvd., Ste. The Whitmans' journey with Club Pilates began in 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted them to reflect on priorities, especially regarding balance and wellness. They launched their first studio locations in Murfreesboro during 2022 and 2023. They opened their East Nashville studio in June 2025, and are scheduled to add a Mount Juliet studio during late January or early February. Tanja verifies Club Pilates instructors perform hundreds of hours of training to meet teacher standards so they can provide the highest quality Pilates workouts. They offer Reformer-based group fitness Pilates classes, each led by a certified instructor. The studio features a variety of apparatuses, including TRX, Exo-Chairs, Bosu balls, mats, rollers, springboards, weights and accessories to keep workouts dynamic and effective. Each class is 50 minutes long, and can be conveniently booked through the Club Pilates app. Classes are offered seven days a week, with 12 attendees per class. "We help members build strength, balance and mobility, and can even help strengthen core during pregnancies," states Tanja. "We also offer free introduction classes." Compassionate Medical Care For Murfreesboro Families 16

FAM ILY CA R E | W EL L NESS

Top-rated family health care is available locally to support wellness journeys of all sorts. "Our mission is to provide compassionate, comprehensive care to individuals and families throughout Murfreesboro," assures Christopher Housden, DO, founder of Murfreesboro Family Medicine. "We believe in a patient-centered approach to health care that focuses on respect, understanding and quality. Whether it’s a wellness visit, a specialized treatment, ongoing care or vaccinations, our team is dedicated to making every patient feel heard and valued." This medical team at 2933 Medical Center Parkway assists the full spectrum of patients: infants, children, teens, adults and seniors. The office was opened during November 2024. As a Middle Tennessee native, Dr. Housden represents a unique combination of medical expertise and local dedication to Murfreesboro Family Medicine by offering compassionate medical care that reflects his lifelong commitment to the community. He received his medical degree from University of Pikeville Kentucky. He completed a residency through University of Tennessee Nashville via St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. With a strong foundation in osteopathic medicine, he focuses on providing high-quality care to each patient, "ensuring their health and well-being are prioritized at every stage." Osteopathic medicine is a "whole person" approach to health care, which is designed to treat the entire patient, not just one's symptoms. This form of medicine is based on the philosophy that the body can heal itself and emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind and spirit. The field of osteopathic medicine was established during 1874 in Kirksville, Missouri, by Andrew Taylor Still, MD. DOs are trained in the same way as MDs, and can diagnose and treat ailments, perform surgery and prescribe drugs. However, DOs get extra training in manipulating the musculoskeletal system as the body's interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones. DOs often include evaluating patients' activity levels, food consumption, physical and mental health, stress levels and sleep habits to determine the root causes of symptoms and to promote better overall health. Kyle Goss, Murfreesboro aquatics superintendent

It’s definitely not uncommon to want to begin a new year on the right foot and set impressive fitness goals from the jump, however Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation team members have created a way for everyone to start strong and stay strong with a new, fun event that lasts throughout the entire month of January. The team wanted to indentify a way to help people get excited about their fitness goals, start off in a strong and meaningful way and encourage them to have fun doing it, all so they're motivated to continue. The second objective of the team was to introduce community residents to several of the city's fitness facilities.

Murfreesboro aquatics superintendent, Kyle Goss explains, “With the New Year, it brings in all the resolutions to be healthier and get in shape. Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation is here to help you on your way and prevent you from falling victim to National Quitters Day. Throughout the month of January, we're highlighting many of the classes and programs we have to offer." He adds that this monthlong 'Start Strong' event culminates on Jan. 31 with a fitness class sampler at Sports*Com and with a variety of instructors from across

the city, a 1-mile Fun Run and the annual cold plunge into the pool at 'Boro Beach. The Start Strong event kicks off with the New Year’s Day 5K race on Jan. 1, starting at 10 a.m. This is one of the community’s favorite local races and is capped at 550 runners; it's a great way to start new fitness goals off on day one. The series of Start Strong events continues with showcase samplers offered at Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation facilities giving the community a chance to try out a wide variety of fitness options. All of the facilities will be offering a showcase

of sampler classes at shortened intervals so guests can try something new and find what they like: • Friday, Jan. 9, at the St. Clair Senior Center, 325 St Clair St. • Saturday, Jan. 10, at Sports*Com, 2310 Memorial Blvd. • Saturday, Jan. 17, at Patterson Park Community Center, 521 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. • Saturday, Jan. 31, at Sports*Com includes: Showcase Sampler 8:15-10:30 a.m.; 1-mile Fun Run 10:30-11 a.m.; and Cold Plunge 11 a.m.

“Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation is here to help you on your way and prevent you from falling victim to National Quitters Day.”

The Cold Plunge is an event that has taken place at the outdoor pool at Sports*Com for more than 20 years and has had several different names, but it always brings out a large group of people that truly love it and come back year after year. "As a self-described 'veteran plunger' at the Cold Plunge event, I always get asked: 'Are you crazy?,' shares Kyle. "While the answer to the first question is up for debate, I usually feel initial shock followed by intense euphoria, mental clarity and physically invigorated right after the plunge. Throughout the day, I also feel renewed, more focused and less stressed. Beyond all these benefits, this is a great way to grow a community of fitness-minded friends who can help each other stay committed to New Years fitness goals. It’s honestly one of my favorite events of the year." Therapeutic sources indicate key benefits of cold plunges can include reduced inflammation, metabolism boost, improved

circulation, stress response adaptation and mood enhancement. Plunges reportedly increase "feel-good" hormones, such as dopamine and noradrenaline, which improve focus, motivation and alertness. Everyone is encouraged to visit different facilities during January and then come back to Sports*Com on Jan. 31 for a high-energy showcase, the 1-mile Fun Run, and of course, the Cold Plunge, where enthusiastic cold plungers of all ages will line the outdoor pool at ‘Boro Beach and then make a grand splash. Guests also will be invited to participate in drawings for prizes and snacks will be provided. The overall mission of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation is to provide vibrant public spaces and inclusive programs, delivered with visionary leadership and caring staff that engage the individual and strengthen the quality of life of our community. GET REGULAR EXERCISE.

R E M I N DER S

MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY.

Just 30 minutes of walking every day can boost moods and improve health. Small amounts of exercise add up, so don’t be discouraged if 30 minutes can't be all at one time.

Stick to a schedule and try to get 7-9 hours of sleep for each 24-hour period. Reduce blue light exposure from phones or computers before bedtime.

TRY RELAXING ACTIVITIES.

Explore relaxation/wellness programs or apps. Incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation or breathing exercises. Listen to music, read, spend time in nature and engage in low-stress hobbies.

SET GOALS AND PRIORITIES.

Decide what must get done now and what can wait. Learn to say “no” to new tasks if starting to feel as though you’re taking on too much. At each day's end, practice appreciating what was accomplished, no matter if small or large task.

MURFREESBORO MARKET UPDATE REPORT As we get out of Thanksgiving and into the Christmas season, things generally start to slow down as people are gearing up for the holidays. If you are a seller during this time, make sure you are doing all the things to make sure your agent is on top of showing requests and making your own ready to show. As a buyer, you can get some great deals to round out the year. Everything we are seeing as far as the numbers are concerned are right in line with what is to be expected for this time of year.

It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
