As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. With over 300 academic programs, eight colleges and hundreds of student clubs and organizations, there’s something for everyone at Middle Tennessee State University. Last year, the university provided more than $212 million in scholarships and educational assistance for its students. “The guaranteed scholarships, if you qualify, are easy money. There are no extra essays; there are no extra applications. You just have to apply by Dec. 1 and meet the qualifications,” said Tony Strode, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions. Through merit scholarships, which can be stacked with other scholarships and awards, students can receive up to $20,000 over four years “MTSU is a great place for students to get the best quality education for the best price,” Strode said. “While you’re here, we want to make sure we’re taking care of you, giving you everything you need to be successful. We’re all in this together; we’re a true blue community and we’re all pushing each other forward to the next phase of life after college.” Angele Latham is a 2020 graduate from MTSU’s College of Media and Entertainment. Her entire college career was 100% scholarship funded. “College can be so scary and expensive, especially at 18 when it’s the biggest financial investment you’ve ever made, and in some cases ever will,” Latham, a reporter for the Jackson Sun in Jackson, Tennessee, said. “Guaranteed scholarships felt like a lifeline for me. It gave me something to hold on to and something to give me the extra push to be able to afford an education. Had it not been for MTSU’s Guaranteed Scholarships, I would not have been able to afford an education. Those scholarships changed the trajectory of my life.” MTSU remains the No. 1 choice for undergraduate students in Tennessee and the top choice for transfer students and veterans in Tennessee. “We pride ourselves on being a large university where we serve a diverse group of students, but our students still get that small-town feel where there’s not an overwhelming number of students in a classroom,” said Strode. MTSU will hold its annual Free Application week where future Blue Raiders – incoming freshmen and transfer students – can apply and we’ll waive the application fee! Young children thrive with a predictable routine but transitioning from the summertime – full of unstructured fun with family – to the school year schedule can be a little bit tricky. Here are some tips and tools for parents to use in making that transition smooth and joyful for little ones.
before school actually starts to help reset your child’s sleep rhythms. If you’ve drifted away from regular eating times and healthy foods, this is a good time to get back on track. A well-rested, well-fed child will be happier and more adaptive when transitioning back to school.
ESTABLISH A “GOODBYE! HELLO!” RITUAL.
START A PAPER CHAIN.
Rituals are a wonderful way to help children through all kinds of transitions in life. Say “goodbye” to summer with an end-ofsummer picnic, for instance, or a splash party in the backyard with the other kids in the neighborhood. Let your child and his friends help you create a banner that bids farewell to summer. You might say “hello” to the new school year by scheduling a special breakfast to celebrate the first day of school with friends.
TALK ABOUT THE REUNIONS TO COME. Beginning a couple of weeks before the new school year starts, remind your child that she will be seeing all of her friends again soon. If you know who her teacher will be, you can start talking about her new teacher and anticipating aloud all the fun things she will do this year in school.
GET SLEEP BACK ON TRACK. Be sure to return to a consistent nighttime routine and meal schedule a week
Cutting out equally sized strips of construction paper about an inch wide and 6 inches long, create a link for every day. Encourage your child to draw a little picture of something he loved about his day, starting with the final days of summer and continuing all the way through Thanksgiving. By then you will have a long, colorful chain you can hang on the holiday tree or along the banister in celebration of fond memories.
CHOOSE SPECIAL READS. Start reading some special back-toschool books to your child the week before school starts. Some of my favorites are: This School Year Will Be the Best!, The Berenstain Bears Go to School, Little Critters: First Day of School and The Kissing Hand. It’s important to be sensitive to the fact that your child may feel anxious about the change in her routine. You can ease her in by using the tools above, remembering that your children thrive on predictability and preparation.

Charles Darwin once said, “The love for all living creatures is the noblest attribute of man.” Dogs are commonly known as man’s best friend for the way they love unconditionally and passionately. A dog is the only animal on the planet that will love his owner more than himself. Unfortunately, every day these creatures are subjected to starvation, abandonment, abuse, and so many other ugly actions. This information inspired Jean Harrison, an avid dog lover, to be a part of the solution. Over a decade ago, she created Big Fluffy Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving dogs from horrible living situations and being euthanized. Unlike shelters and the Humane Society, Big Fluffy Dog relies solely on donations and adoption fees to support its needs. They also take on the worst cases, which most rescues and shelters turn away. “No dog left behind,” is the motto for the organization coined by Jean and herstaff of individuals with compassionate hearts of gold. Big Fluffy Dog’s staff is extremely passionate about its mission and devotes long hours to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from all over the east side of the United States. On staff, they have a vet tech named Hailey, who dispenses medication, heartworm tests, most vaccines, fecal matter testing, and microchipping. For other needs beyond their abilities, animals are sent to local vet partnerships. They also have partnerships with many shelters that will report dogs in desperate need of help. Lower-income communities, abusive homes, and dogs being surrendered from families are several ways Big Fluffy Dog receivesdogs in imperative need of revitalization. They take on the most expensive and horrible cases from physically vulnerable dogs to ones near death’s door. Even if a dog’s physical state makes death inevitable, Big Fluffy Dog gives them a place to pass away where they are loved and in peace. CONTINUED >

Big Fluffy Dog has an intense and thorough process of vetting adoption and foster care candidates. Background checks for criminal activity, verification of home ownership, and checking their history of care for past and current pets are vital and mandatory information. Phone interviews are also conducted in order to learn more about thefamily life, habitat, and lifestyle of the candidates. All these criteria are essential since certain breeds require particular environments. The placement of these dogs is taken very seriously by Jean and her staff since these aren’t simply animals, but innocent creatures with hearts and feelings. Most dogs in their care have experienced immensetrauma and cruelty and only want to be loved by someone. There are countless success stories of foster and adoptions that went so well, that customers came back to Big Fluffy Dog for more animals. A community Facebook group dedicated to foster care families to support and help one another in whatever ways needed is also available. As Big Fluffy Dog grows, its demands and needs for funding, supplies, volunteers, and caretakers. In fact, so far this year, 360 dogs have been taken into custody, while 395 dogs have been adopted. The goal is to double those numbers by the time this year is finished. Any help is greatly appreciated by both the staff and the incredible dogs they rescue. PREP TIME: 15 minutes COOK TIME: 40 minutes YIELDS: 25
INGREDIENTS • 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour • 2 large eggs • ½ cup canned pumpkin • 2 tablespoons peanut butter • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon water (or more if necessary)

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F 2. Combine flour, eggs, pumpkin peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl; stir with spatula until combined 3. Transfer the mixture to a work surface and work it with your hands until the mixture starts to come together. Add 1 teaspoon of water at a time (only if needed) to help make dough more workable. Don’t add too much as it should be dry and stiff. 4. Roll the dough to a thickness of ½ inch. Cut into ½ inch pieces and transfer to a baking sheet. 5. Bake in a preheated oven until dog treats are golden brown and crunchy. Takes about 40 minutes depending on your oven. Let cool before serving to your pups. 6. Enjoy!
