LIFESTYLE LETTER
Women Celebrating Women Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few locals and women who are finding ways to give back to our community which has left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life.

It’s arguably the most iconic line ever uttered from the lips of Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep in the 2006 comedy-drama, The Devil Wears Prada, as she portrays the simultaneously feared and revered Miranda Priestly — a character rumored to be inspired by Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. As we take in the spring 2022 style scene, the sardonic remark [made to a room full of terrified fashion editors] comes readily to mind; however, explanations touted by designers and fashion experts alike would suggest that there really is something cathartic and important about the use of floral prints this season. Independent French company Fashion Network [known as a hub for fashion industry professionals] calls the latest take on the trend a commentary on “ideas of hope, bloom, and transformation” and “a future in full blossom” in a post-lockdown society. Meanwhile, a collection of some of Murfreesboro’s most beloved women’s clothing boutiques came together at Magnolia Farms to share how their stylists are envisioning the look for their customers in 2022. One accessory to complete your floral ensemble? A bold, textured clutch proves to be an absolute must-have. Find us on Instagram @borocitylifestyle to peep our full Spring fashion feature.

Grace Under
Pressure American Idol alum Grace Leer personifies a lesson in patience, perseverance and gratitude 18
M UST SE E | EN TERTA INME NT
It’s a humid, cloudy afternoon in Nashville, TN, where I’m waiting on West End in the eclectic Graduate Hotel lobby to meet up-and-coming country artist Grace Leer. As of now, the songstress is perhaps most widely recognized as a contestant on Season 18 of American Idol; more specifically, the contestant who pop superstar Katy Perry stated made other competitors look like they were performing in a talent show. But after sitting down and talking to Leer — a woman who possesses all the warmth and humidity you’d expect from your quintessential girl-nextdoor — it’s clear that her time on the long-running reality show hardly qualifies as the most interesting thing about her [even if the extraordinary circumstances brought on by the COVID lockdowns demanded she acts as artist, producer, camera crew and lighting technician, too]. Currently sporting a denim corseted top, blue jeans, and cowboy boots, she regales me with the story of her life, an adventure that led her from the West Coast to the heart of Tennessee. As we converse in a quiet corner of the room, surrounded by walls adorned with flowers, butterflies, and cardinals, my first observation is that Grace is clearly a woman of determination and perseverance— traits she attributes to her identity not only as a musician but as a former Division 1 athlete. “It was the biggest slap in the face — my first realization of ‘You might be the best where you come from, but you go to this next level and you’re starting over,’” she recalls of her time playing soccer at UC Berkley. “It was a lot like when I first got to Nashville. It was like ‘Oh yeah, Grace, you’re a great singer’ — but you get here, and it is saturated as hell. All these female country artists, all these pretty girls with good voices and their stories, the hard work they put it in; it’s really hard to feel confident in the middle of that.”

“The self-described “Type-A” singer first moved here in 2017 at her mother’s behest, and immediately picked up a classic 9-5 job in sales in the name of a steady paycheck.”
The self-described “Type-A” singer first moved here in 2017 at her mother’s behest, and immediately picked up a classic 9-5 job in sales in the name of a steady paycheck. She admits that much of the time she was supposed to spend cold-calling was actually spent “living for the weekend,” working on posters for her shows when her manager wasn’t lurking nearby. Two and a half years into that routine, Leer auditioned for Idol. Her journey came to an end after appearing in the Top 10, whereupon elimination she received a call from Red Light Management (whose impressive roster currently boasts the likes of Chris Stapleton and Maren Morris). “I was very giddy on that phone call,” she imparts with a self-deprecating smile. “Tom Lord was like, ‘That’s great, we love

your energy — but you don’t have the songs yet.’ So shortly after they got me in the writing room, and that was a really good experience for me.” Her debut single Brought A Girl was the byproduct of one of those writing room sessions, an upbeat-comedic track inspired by the real-life moment when a former flame showed up at her party with a new partner in tow. “I think that song was special because down to everything, it was true. The best part was when they were like, ‘We’re going to make a video; what do you want to do?’ And I decided that I wanted to just recreate it. So the house where I threw the original party, we really used that house. And I called the guy who I wrote the song about, and we were good, we’re friends — so he’s really the guy in the music video,” Grace says with a laugh.
Upon this revelation, I find myself itching to watch, and I tell her so. It’s the kind of Swift-like honesty that inspires both incredulity and devotion from the collective. These days, Grace is living more than just one dream come true. She’s touring for the first time with Logan Mize, an artist she’s long since been a fan of and with whom she just released a brand new single “Nothing With You” (a song guaranteed to make you feel single and heartbroken even if you’re not). Noting that her career goals eventually include Grammys and selling out arenas, Leer concludes our conversation with an anecdote that we would all be wise to adopt and apply to our own lives. “We all want that instant gratification, but there’s a reason I’m at this place where I am now. I know I have a long way to go and a lot to learn, but I’m so grateful.”

BRINGING THE JOY OF DAIRY BACK TO THE INTOLERANT ARTICLE BY GRACE LIBMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGEL PARDUE
Born and raised in California and the epitome of a city girl, Delaney knew absolutely nothing about country living, let alone farm life. Six years ago, ninety percent of everyday consumed foods were no longer safe for Delaney Drake to eat. Major gastrointestinal issues and intense stomach pain had become her daily companion, leaving Delaney miserable in the fetal position isolated from enjoying relational activities. After seeking the expertise of a nutritionist, numerous amounts of food were declared an allergen and taken out of Delaney’s diet. Having common foods stripped from her familiar lifestyle was incredibly difficult emotionally and physically. Her heath, mental state, and family all went through extreme transitioning. One of the foods taken out of her diet was dairy. Delaney tried goat cheese as a replacement option, but it did not agree with her body. After tasting sheep’s milk ice cream, Delaney had finally found a food that didn’t affect her at all, sheep’s milk. This new discovery sparked a revolutionary idea for Delaney and her family. She and her sister decided to start their own small business out of their new love for sheep’s milk products. In 2020, Delaney bought 4 baby girl lambs, which are called Ewes, and began her journey to establish what is now known as Ewe and Me Creamery. Delaney had in fact done little to no research on raising sheep, but instead learned along the way. In this modern-day and age, dairy allergies and intolerances are quite common amongst the average individual. While cow products have a high lactose content, sheep’s milk has the least amount of lactose and proteins that most find themselves unable to tolerate. Sheep’s milk is actually even sweeter than regular dairy, is similar to the texture of melted ice cream, and contains the purest fat content. The amount of products and meals that can be made with sheep’s milk is endless. Delaney has created

soaps, ice cream, and cheese, and currently working on yogurt. These endless possibilities add variety and joy back into the lives of those with dairy allergies and other health issues. Sheep’s milk has opened a pandora’s box of recipes and meals for Delaney that has completely changed her life. She says the goal of her business is to “provide an option for those who have none,” since she was in that exact situation before. Ewe and Me Creamery operates with herd shares, where customers buy shares of the sheep and pay for the milk being produced. Delaney highly encourages her customers to bring their children and orchestrate field trips to her farm. She stresses the importance of, “creating a personal connection between the food and the farmer.” Children today need to be taught their original food source is the farm, not the grocery store. Delaney and her family have fallen in love with sheep’s milk and thoroughly enjoy sharing it with the world. For more information on Delaney or Ewe and Me Creamery visit their Facebook or Instagram at @eweandmecreamery.

MTSU PROFESSOR DEVOTES CAREER TO ENCOURAGING WOMEN IN STEM WOMEN NEED TO KNOW THEY CAN SUCCEED IN STEM ARTICLE BY DEANN HAYS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED BY MTSU
Middle Tennessee State University professor Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross has made it part of her life’s mission to encourage girls and women who are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). As a mother of a young son at the time, Iriarte-Gross was a non-traditional student when she decided to continue her education. And thanks to mentors along the way who encouraged her to chase her dreams, she has excelled in her decadeslong career as a chemist and has bestowed her wisdom and knowledge to thousands of students along the way. “I was able to succeed because I found a good mentor that didn’t mind me asking questions,” Iriarte-Gross said. “Women need to know they can succeed in science or mathematics.” Thinking she was going to be a medical doctor, Iriarte-Gross brushed off a faculty member telling her she was a chemist. “She kept telling me, ‘You’re a chemist,’ Iriarte-Gross recalled. “She sent me to a three-week summer program at the University of Maryland College Park for women and underrepresented students in the sciences to see if I wanted to be a medical doctor. We did all the things that medical students did at that time. I came back to her and I told her, ‘Thank you. You’re right. I’m a chemist.’”
Iriarte-Gross went on to work as a chemist for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a chemistry lab manager in the plastics industry before joining MTSU’s Department of Chemistry in 1996. Soon after her arrival on the university’s campus, Iriarte-Gross brought the Girls in STEM conference, formerly known as Expanding Your Horizons, to campus. The annual hands-on STEM conference serves students in Rutherford and surrounding counties. “The sky’s the limit for career opportunities for girls in STEM. Ask the questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” IriarteGross said. “We’re hearing now that COVID is going to be around like the flu. It would be cool if one of these girls attending our conference will find a cure for it.” Quoting Sally Ride, the first woman astronaut to go to space in the 1980s, Iriarte-Gross said, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” Iriarte-Gross also serves as the director of the WISTEM Center on MTSU’s campus, which received the 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from Insight into Diversity magazine. She has also received multiple awards and honors, including being named Woman of Achievement-Tennessee by the Women in Higher Education-Tennessee statewide organization.

Welcome at the Table
Laura Gossett
Get to know Laura Gossett, owner of Tasty Table, and what community in Murfreesboro means to her. ARTICLE BY AMBER JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARA CLEAR
30
O UR TOWN | LOCAL SERVI CE S
I had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only, Laura Gossett! She is truly an icon to Murfreesboro, especially with her good cooking! Be sure to follow her on Instagram, @tastytablemboro.
with another on the way. I don’t work Mondays to devote my time to them. My husband and I both work really hard and we play really hard too. We spend a lot of our time, when we are not working, traveling.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY?
FAVORITE PARTS OF LIVING MURFREESBORO?
My very first experience in the industry was when I was 18 as a hostess for Applebee’s in Nashville. I worked for Demo’s both as a server and later as a manager. In 2010, my daughter asked me if I would cook for a group of 60 of her friends for prom. One of the moms that helped host the dinner told somebody at church about it and they reached out to me about catering their daughter’s wedding. From there Tasty Table grew, I went from 10 to 30+ weddings in a year.
Downtown is our favorite area. We walk the square and around town with our two dogs. I love what it’s becoming. What the goals are, long term, are really good and I want to be a part of that.
WHAT ARE YOU UP TO NOW? Within this building we call The Abbey, we have a co-working space, Olive Branch Bakery, Tasty Table catering, and now we have The Public House. The goal for all of this is to reach out to our community and offer a place where people want to come and enjoy each other, enjoy good music, enjoy great food. Eventually, we want to partner with chefs to have chef nights, we’ve got musicians coming in, we’ll probably do some art shows. We really want this whole space to be a collaborative space.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DISH TO COOK? My signature is our Truffle Mac and Cheese. It took me a while because I’m a self-taught chef, and I didn’t go to culinary school. So it was a lot of trial and error but it’s our signature item on the catering side.
WHAT ARE THINGS YOU DEDICATE YOUR TIME TO OUTSIDE OF TASTY TABLE? My family is the most important thing to me. I have 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren
DO YOU HAVE A MORNING ROUTINE OR RITUAL? I have an app called The First Five and I’ll listen to the daily verse while I’m getting ready. I do try to take that first 5 minutes of my morning and really give it to God, pray for the day and pray for the people in our lives and our community.
SMALL THINGS THAT MAKE YOUR DAY BETTER? FaceTiming my grandkids. Seeing their sweet little faces is probably one of my favorite things during the day that keeps me going. Also, it's humbling to see and hear someone enjoying something you've created.
ANY STANDOUT EXPERIENCES BEING A BUSINESS OWNER THE FOOD INDUSTRY? Covid is probably the most significant thing that’s ever happened in our industry. Covid taught me a lot. It gave us the ability to say no…to understand how important our families are over money and revenue. Being known for helping someone else or helping build a community, I don’t care if my name is ever in it, I want it to be more about the business in the community and the people who have done the work to get us there.

Get Away to the Mile High City Where the Mountains and Metropolitan Lifestyle Vibrantly Coincide
Visit Denver When you think about Denver, what immediately may come to mind is the gateway to the stunning landscape of mountain peaks with an abundance of recreational activities. But what you might not realize is just how unbelievable the urban experience is in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Denver to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this mile-high destination. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events to check out, pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked.

Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience.
