JANUARY 2017

I

f I have learned anything from my recent jaunt into yoga, it's that for every advancement you make in your physical fitness, you make two in your mental health. What started out as a way to tone arms and increase stamina turned into my go-to way to relieve mental stress and anxiety. After 30 years of being an on-again-offagain exerciser, I am now a full-blown yoga convert for life.

When I started yoga, it was with Youtube videos and double stacked towels on my living room floor- no mat, no cute yoga pants, no real teacher showing me how I should be bending. After about 9 months of working my way up to feeling as though I could attend a beginner's class, I signed up for my first official group yoga class. I was surprised that I was not as terrible as I had originally thought. I probably could have gone months before and still have kept up, but fear of being too far behind stopped me. After several more months regularly taking classes, I can now say I am still going strong. I'm not dead lifting couches nor am I sticking my legs behind my head, but I am a better version of myself mentally and physically. I feel accomplished and proud of what I have done with my body and mind.

To echo a little of what has been said in this issue in regards to health and wellness: Don't be afraid- you are probably better than you think, do find something you love to do, and always celebrate your own, personal accomplishments. As cheesy as it sounds, no change is too small and no form of exercise is too silly. Get motivated with our health and wellness issue. If you lay it flat on the floor you can read it while you downward dog. Happy New Year, y'all!

new year, a new start. There's something encouraging about new beginnings and starting fresh around a new year. It offers the opportunity to re-do or undo past errors. But we over complicate the effort required to make the changes we need to make in our lives. A new year is a nice rally point but often you just have to get started. It's not any more complicated than that. Ten years ago, January 2007, I looked in the mirror after too much Christmas cheer and said, "This just has to stop." In six months, I lost 45 pounds and it was the thinnest I'd been since college. My wife thought I looked too thin, but how is "too thin" even possible? I dropped 8" in my waist. My shirt size went from a Large to a Medium. Perhaps most surprisingly, I dropped a half a shoe size. I guess I had fat feet too. Who knew? In the first month I lost 10 pounds and I still recall thinking how relatively easy it was and why did I wait so long? In 2016, I joined Palmetto Masters Swimming and got back in the pool competitively for the first time since college. That meant being at the LTP pool in Mt. Pleasant several times a week. Masters

swimming is not casual lap swimming. These are coached workouts with Coach Lance Ogren telling you how far you will swim, how fast you will swim, and how little rest you will get, all at 5:30 am. It was not an easy re-beginning for me. I no longer enjoyed the body of a 20-year old, but I kept showing up and doing the work. Within a couple of months my endurance had improved and by April I competed in the U.S. Masters National Swimming Championship in Greensboro, NC. I am not saying I won, but I didn't stink and this Old Gray Mare got up on the blocks and dove in headfirst. Sometimes the hardest part to a new beginning is the first step, then the second step, then the third step. But it has to begin with a step in the direction you want to go - whether it's a new job, losing weight, new relationships, or healing old wounds. You just have to get started. What's your first step?

Seacoast gives back PASTOR GREG AND SON, JOSH, REFLECT ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR ARTICLE DEBORAH SLEDZIONA | PHOTOGRAPHY JESS WOOD

I

t’s hard to believe that Seacoast Church began with sixty-f ive people in a Mt. Pleasant apartment clubhouse. Now, with eleven locations spread across the lowcountry, midlands, and upstate, Seacoast is easily one of South Carolina’s largest Christian organizations. Seacoast’s first church was opened in Mt. Pleasant by Pastor Greg during Easter of 1988. Although Mt. Pleasant and the Holy City had many great churches at that time, Seacoast’s goal was to reach the people who had quit going to church or didn’t have one. “We called over 16,000 names in the phone book,” Pastor Greg recounted, “We asked if they went to church, and if they didn’t, we asked them to tell us why.” With the survey results, a list was compiled that would aid Seacoast in creating a unique and contemporary church designed to reach a forgotten audience. Today, Pastor Greg and his staff have the amazing opportunity to reach thousands of followers five days a week. Despite a growing audience and the growing responsibilities that

12

come along with the territory, Pastor Greg and his son, Josh, still manage to stay in touch with the communal needs of Mt. Pleasant and the surrounding areas. The Dream Center of North Charleston is just one of the many ways that Pastor Greg and his staff have listened to and responded to the needs of the Charleston community. When USA Today identified North Charleston as the seventh most dangerous city in the United States, Seacoast knew that something must be done. “Obviously, we love Mt. Pleasant,” Pastor Greg professed, “but we also need to be good neighbors to the surrounding areas.” The Dream Center is modeled after a similar organization in Los Angeles, the L.A. Dream Center. According to Seacoast, in the nineteen years that the The L.A. Dream Center has been open, they have seen a 70% decrease in the crime rate in the area. “Our dream is the same in delivering hope to a community that seems to have lost just CONTINUED > that,” Seacoast pledges.

“If everyone does a little, it’s amazing how much good we can accomplish,” Josh attested. To date the Dream Center has provided thousands of families with food and clothing. In the spring of 2009, Seacoast also opened a free medical clinic, the Dream Center Clinic, offering medical, dental and vision care. According to Seacoast, since opening the Dream Center, North Charleston has seen a 25% decrease in crime in the area that the center is located. Other services that Seacoast has provided to the community include a car clinic for single parents, resources for repairing and restoring houses, and tutoring for students who are having a challenging time 14

in school. “We challenge every individual to think of ways to serve the community,” Pastor Greg expressed, “We challenge everyone to be generous with time, talent, and resources.” The Dream Center is just one of the many amazing contributions that Seacoast has made to the Charleston area. But as Seacoast’s audience grows, so does their need to expand. “We don’t ever want to close the door to people,” Josh expressed. Which is why in November 2016, Seacoast began its latest renovation project to their Mt. Pleasant location. “We really haven’t expanded our auditorium CONTINUED >

since 1999,” Pastor Greg affirmed. Seacoast’s plans for Mt. Pleasant include building a new 2,400 seat worship center, while allowing the old center to serve as a youth center for their young adult audience. “Our goal is to give more to the community than we take away,” Pastor Greg added, “We feel like it’s a privilege for us to serve this community, and we want to give back the best we can.” Seacoast plans for renovations to be complete in the spring of 2018. It must be noted that none of Seacoast's amazing contributions could have been made without their dedicated volunteer base. If you are interested in volunteering or donating, whether it is time, resources, or skills, please visit Seacoast. Org/Serve for opportunities. Cleaning out your closet for the new year? Healthy Living with the Radakers One family shares tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle ARTICLE SYDNEY HERWIG | PHOTOGRAPHY JESS WOOD 18

Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle | January 2017

W

e’ve all been here: It’s the new year, you’ve eaten too many Christmas cookies, you’re supposed to make a resolution, and it often ends up being health-related—train for a 5k, cut out sweets or lose 10 pounds. But how many of us stick with it? Add in various stressors such as a busy job or family members who don’t want to eat the same things, and this well-intentioned resolution can become overwhelming enough to make you quit in just a matter of days without even realizing it. Ryan Radaker, who’s been involved in fitness her entire life, and Kyle Radaker, who’s been involved for the past 25 years and currently works at Eco Fitness, knew implementing healthy habits in their home was a must. Ryan has three daughters—a 10-year-old and twins who are six. They derived the idea for their business as they looked to their own blended family’s wellness practices and wondered what they could do to help other families give children healthy examples amidst the chaos of everyday life. Thus, Radaker Health and Wellness was born in January 2016. Their approach is one step at a time and involves the entire home and family, not just the individual. The mission is to “help people achieve higher levels of fitness, become educated in nutrition, strengthen their faith, find balance in the entire “wellness wheel,” CONTINUED > and achieve a healthy “self ” …inside and out.”

The business operates on a three-step process: The “what,” “why” and “how.” The “what” is the goal—the question everyone should be asking themselves. Once the goal is set, Kyle asks for the “why,” “It’s gotta be personal, important, attainable and achievable. It helps us personalize it more.” The next question is “how.” How can you achieve your goal and what’s the best program for doing so? “We like to involve people in that process, because if we tell somebody here’s what you’re going to do: go to the gym, eat this, then they may give up on the whole program. Instead, we find out what they can find in their life to impact change for themselves,” Kyle explains. One of Kyle’s favorite expressions is, “Ink it, don’t think it.” He has clients write down their commitment because he feels that doing so will make them more liable to stick with it. Once people have figured out their fitness and wellness plans, the other aspect is assessments which take place in the “RadLab.” These are done to measure success, rather than relying on a scale. “We like to look at body composition and use a device called the Inbody scale. We then do a simple blood profile assessment and a full battery of metabolic testing, which lets us determine exactly the number of calories that should be eaten daily in regards to how many are burned,” Kyle says. “The tests help them formulate their “how.” It takes it from an objective way of looking at fitness, and funnels it down to make it very subjective,” Kyle says. Aside from encouraging fitness, there's also the healthy eating aspect. Kyle and Ryan don’t recommend diets or restricting certain food groups all together. Instead, they suggest making small tweaks at a time emphasizing lean, organic meats and dairy with lots of fruits and vegetables. Ryan stresses if you CONTINUED >

can’t shop organic for everything, get the organic meat and dairy at least. A fun tip Ryan shared was to always try to shop the outside perimeter of the grocery store, where the naturally grown food is, rather than going up and down the aisles, where the processed food lives. Cooking is one of the opportunities the family uses to get the girls involved. Ryan notes that the kids like to eat the food more when they’ve helped participate in its preparation. To keep your meals feeling fun and fresh, Ryan recommends recipe swapping, “Something you’ve been making seems old to you, but new to someone else.” Living in Mount Pleasant, the Radakers take advantage of the great weather offered here. Kyle notes this makes it easier to get outside. He likes this to be people’s first goal: be active for an hour each day. He recommends walking the bridge, walk or bike trails, or head to the beach. "If you’re getting out and moving, that’s a start," he says. This year, when you write your resolutions, remember your “what,” “why” and “how.” Following the Radakers’ tips and approaches may be what helps you get your health on track.

THE RADAKERS’ TOP 5 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: 1. Drink more water. 8, 8 oz. glasses a day. Easy way to remember: drink a glass of water per hour of being awake. 2. Incorporate one fruit and one vegetable per day into meals. 3. At least an hour of activity a day. Get it in, doesn't matter the time or place. 4. Find your fitness community. Find a group of people or a community to hold you to it. You need accountability. 5. Supplements. Most important supplement is a good probiotic. January 2017 | Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle

o early morning peppermint mochas have you feeling the winter-sweat-pant blues? Do pumpkin spice lattes leave you feeling more like a pumpkin spice potato? Are you a coffee lover who is thinking of ditching your daily cup for a healthier alternative? If you answered yes, then there is a solution for you: cold brew coffee by Barista Vending. If you have ever thought that black coffee is simply too bitter to enjoy alone, it’s time to rethink your cup. Many people are familiar with standard hot brewing coffee methods. However, hot brewing is often times the culprit for the burnt taste that makes black coffee unbearable to even the most die-hard coffee fans. And while many coffee lovers may choose to accept the bitter taste of hot brewed coffee, masking 24

it with sugars, sweeteners and creams, Barista Vending has decided to cold brew their beans for a smoother, more health-conscious cup. “Coffee is very delicate,” Jim Luby, co-founder of Barista Vending revealed. When hot brewing, the coffee bean breaks down and releases natural oils that are responsible for its bitter taste. However, when coffee is cold brewed, those oils stay put. As a result, the acidity is significantly reduced, creating a smoother and healthier cup of coffee. “Cold brewing is a lot like steeping tea,” Luby elaborated, “it slows down the process and there is an entirely different reaction.” Not only does the reduced acidic content of cold brew result in a smoother cup of coffee, it is great news for your stomach lining and tooth enamel as well. “Our goal is to educate people on the benefits of cold brew and to offer a craft beverage that is healthy,” Luby declared. Two years ago, Jim Luby and partner, Drew Wynne started Barista Vending as an in-home operation. “We bought a bunch of beans and started cold brewing at the house,” Luby recounted. Today, over thirty offices and ten stores and restaurants in the Charleston area carry their cold brew. Barista Vending is changing the way that the Lowcountry takes its coffee, one cup at a time. We know that you don’t have the time to meticulously brew the perfect cup of coffee every day, so why not let the professionals do it for you? Don’t like your coffee cold? No problem. Cold brew coffee can easily be heated while maintaining its health benefits and rich, pleasant flavor.

Parting Thoughts

A Healthy New Year MAKING SMART CHANGES WITHOUT THE STRESS ARTICLE LINDA PAGE

I

was upset last October when I read an article that suggested we are all our skinniest in the fall and it takes 5 months to lose the weight we typically gain in the 10 weeks between Halloween and the New Year. So, I decided I’d be good to myself and not indulge in every holiday treat that I came across last Thanksgiving. Now don’t get me wrong, I drank plenty of wine and ate plates full of turkey and carbohydrate-laden favorites like cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, and macaroni & cheese. I am also guilty of having a few of my favorite sweets, like fruitcake. Yes, I like fruitcake. So here I am in January deciding if my New Year's resolutions should include an exercise routine. I am no stranger to exercise, but I like to go the dentist more than I like to go to the gym. I’m the first to admit I should take up yoga because I have heard you are as young as your spine is flexible, but the thought of myself in fashionable yoga pants on the floor in a downward dog is not very appealing. I have attended a few Zumba classes and I do love to dance, but I always seem to be stepping to the left when the rest of the class is stepping to the right. I did join a gym last year with my kids and even though it was a great value, I couldn’t justify the expense since we only went about once a month. However, I do miss the massage chairs. My brother Tony and I competed in the Charleston Healthy Challenge in 2010 and I was the biggest loser with a total weight loss of 50 pounds. So, even though I’m poking fun at myself, I do understand the importance of physical fitness and a clean diet. My daughter Audrey and I have committed to eating healthy by limiting anything wheat, white, or processed. That means we eat loads of lean

meats, tons of vegetables and some fruit. I find I feel lighter even if the scale keeps lying to me. Exercise may not be my favorite thing but I manage to stay active at Page’s Thieves Market. Although I’m edging close to 60 years old, I can still load and unload trucks full of antiques and furniture with the best of them. I guess, for me, healthy is being active and being happy. I enjoy a glass of wine with a close friend more than doing planks, but I think there’s something to be said about keeping your stress levels down. So as I contemplate 2017 and what I’ll do that’s good for me this year, I think I’ll strive to be mindful of the choices I make regarding food, and maybe I’ll vow to walk the dogs to the Old Bridge everyday….or maybe once a week. I may not increase my fitness level this year, but maybe I’ll meditate more, spend more time with friends and family, and continue to fill my life with laughter. I hope your 2017 includes things that are good for you. Remember, don’t just live….create a life.
