LIFESTYLE LETTER
Destin-ation Wellness The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of City Lifestyle Mount Juliet was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Take the trip, Invest in yourself and your health first, embrace nature and most importantly spend the time to create memories with those you love most. We hope our stories this month give you a little inspiration. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich dessert from Brio Gelaterio isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

BUSTING WIDE-AWAKE SURGERY MYTHS with Dr. William Melton
Orthopaedic Surgeon - Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics
D
r. William Melton, a surgeon at Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics, specializes in both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of fractures, nerve and tendon injuries, arthritis, and more affecting the hands, wrists, and elbows. Read on as Dr. Melton busts some common myths about wide-awake surgery as an alternative to surgery under general anesthesia. Myth 1: There is still discomfort during wide-awake surgery despite the numbing procedures. MOSTLY FALSE Dr. Melton: There can be occasional discomfort associated with pressure, although there should be no sharp pain. It is similar to a dentist using a drill in the mouth: the pressure from the drill can be felt, but there is no sharp pain from the drill. Myth 2: Patients experience increased anxiety during wide-awake surgery. FALSE Dr. Melton: The operating room staff and I try to make the experience as easy as possible. Most of these procedures are relatively quick, and we are able to talk through any concerns the patient has. The benefit of being wide awake is that it allows for conversation at the time of surgery. If there is still ongoing anxiety, or the patient has concerns, anti-anxiety medicine can be given. Myth 3: There is more pain after wideawake surgery. FALSE Dr. Melton: The surgery is no different, except for the anesthesia. I typically use the
same numbing medicine whether the patient is awake or asleep. The benefit of being awake is, again, open dialogue and conversation during surgery, when I can coach the patient and answer any questions they may have about the surgery or postoperative care. This may lead to less pain due to less confusion or uncertainty. Myth 4: It is harder to qualify for a wide-awake surgery than for surgery using general anesthesia. FALSE Dr. Melton: It is much easier to qualify for wide-awake surgery. General anesthesia has risks, and there is often a required evaluation by medical doctors preoperatively. This is not the case for wide-awake surgery. I do not routinely obtain a medical evaluation preoperatively for wide awake surgery. Myth 5: There are more risks involved in wide-awake surgery. FALSE Dr. Melton: There are actually fewer risks involved in wide-awake surgery due to the absence of general anesthesia or sedation. For example, I still use the same technique for a carpal tunnel release or trigger finger release, whether the patient is asleep or awake. The risk with surgery is the same, but the risk of anesthesia is not.

A L IGNE D L I V ING HOW NISHANN LANATA CULTIVATES WHOLE-LIFE FINANCIAL WELLNESS
ARTICLE BY KOURTNEY MCCOMB PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY CONDER PHOTOGRAPHY

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S
For Nishann LaNata of Craft Wealth Services, financial wellness extends far beyond budgets and investment accounts. It’s a full-picture experience— emotional, relational, practical, and rooted in values. And that’s why… “Financial wellness is really about feeling peace around your finances and knowing your money is aligned with what matters most,” LaNata explains. Her philosophy comes from deeply personal beginnings: a childhood marked by financial uncertainty. Those early lessons showed her that true wellness isn’t determined by income but by mindset, habits, and clarity around priorities.
That perspective now informs the way LaNata serves clients: as an advisor, yes, but also as an accountability partner and cheerleader. Money can be vulnerable territory, and trust is essential. LaNata takes time to understand her clients’ upbringing, fears, values, and default behaviors. This foundation, she explains, helps them navigate not only opportunities but also life’s hardest moments. When clients face diagnoses, grief, or major transitions, having a preexisting financial plan becomes a source of stability for them. “It allows them to focus on what matters most,” LaNata says. She sees this connection especially among her women clients, whom she supports through her Advisor for Women™ certification. Many women struggle with what LaNata calls the “confidence gap,” which she explains is the misplaced feeling that they must fully understand finances before they can participate in money decisions. Nishann gently flips the script: confidence grows step by step. Small habits compound. And when money begins to support a woman’s values, she becomes “truly unstoppable,” says LaNata. LaNata’s whole-life approach is also informed by two communities that have shaped her profoundly: agricultural and military families. As a land-planning specialist and former military spouse, she speaks about these groups with deep admiration. Farmers and ranchers, she notes, live with a richness many overlook: family bonds, shared meals, the changing air, the breeze while riding a horse, the generosity inherent in tight-knit communities. Military families, too, embody courage, resilience, and sacrifice, supporting one another through deployments, relocations, and uncertainty. “These groups share something powerful: purpose,” she says. “They wake up every day knowing others depend on them. That resilience requires courage to take risks.” The examples set by military and agricultural families have shaped
LaNata’s approach to financial planning: build contingency plans, embrace flexibility, honor purpose, and prepare for life’s unpredictability. “When we align with what matters most, we can do hard things for the people we love. That’s what I try to carry into every client relationship,” LaNata adds. LaNata also sees parallels between financial wellness and her love of the outdoors—some seasons require pushing up steep climbs, while others call for stillness. Both are essential. Financial wellness should be sustainable, never draining. To nurture that sustainability, LaNata recommends three habits: grounding yourself before reviewing your finances to reduce stress-driven avoidance; conducting monthly check-ins to build margin and awareness; and revisiting your plan annually to ensure it still reflects your values. Looking ahead, LaNata envisions a community where financial wellness feels accessible and values-based—where households and businesses are aligned, confident, and supported. She hopes to leave a legacy of people who feel seen, secure, and empowered to live generously and purposefully. If LaNata can help others find clarity, wholeness, and hope in their financial lives, she says, “that’s the impact I want to make.”

Timeless Charm
Designing Outdoor Spaces with American Elegance
For more than four decades, landscape architect Todd Breyer has shaped some of Middle Tennessee’s beloved outdoor spaces, from private estates to community gardens. As Gardens Chair for the Antiques & Garden Show, he brings deep horticultural knowledge and a lifelong love of nature to this year’s theme, “American Elegance.” His perspective blends history, practicality, and a belief that outdoor spaces can profoundly impact wellbeing. Breyer explains that American garden style has never been one thing. “Like the country itself, it’s a melting pot of cultures and time periods,” he says. From colonial kitchen gardens to the landscapes of the 1800s, American gardens have borrowed ideas from Europe, Asia, and beyond — and today include natives, pollinator havens, sculptural spaces, and cottage-inspired designs. For this year’s show, he’s channeling the structured gardens of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period that captures the refined charm behind “American Elegance.” While he respects tradition, Breyer knows outdoor living has changed. Once, porches were where families gathered to cool down and visit with neighbors.
16
M UST SE E | EVENT P L ANN IN G + SE RVICE S
Now, outdoor spaces function as true “rooms” that extend the home. In Middle Tennessee’s climate, that means creating nooks that work year-round: shade in summer, sun in cooler months, fireplaces for winter evenings. He sees a shift, especially among younger homeowners, toward reconnecting with nature through herbs, vegetables, flowers, and hands-on gardening. “Getting your hands in the dirt is good for your soul,” he says. Children marvel as a tiny sunflower seed becomes a towering plant — proof that nature still inspires wonder. Breyer is especially passionate about the wellness benefits of being outside. He points to sunshine, fresh air, movement, and the quiet rhythms of nature as powerful mood boosters. At the Herb Garden in Centennial Park, where he volunteers, he often sees families from nearby medical centers wander in to relax and breathe. To bring that sense of peace to a home garden, he suggests sensory elements: water, grasses, gravel paths, uplifting colors, fragrant plants, and evergreen structure for winter interest. Even small “surprise details,” he notes, can elevate the experience. Incorporating antiques outdoors — a hallmark of the Antiques & Garden Show
‘Get ting your hands in the dir t is good for your soul.’ -Todd Breyer
— is a matter of intention and scale. Breyer encourages choosing pieces that harmonize with the home’s character and the garden’s style, whether classic urns, heirloom containers, or a contemporary sculpture placed unexpectedly within a traditional landscape. When it comes to plants, he emphasizes using varieties that thrive in Tennessee’s climate. Proper soil preparation is key, and the palette should reflect both the garden’s style and the homeowner’s personality.
“Color is a matter of artistry,” he says. Whether vibrant or restrained, plants should spark joy across the seasons. For those hoping to bring a touch of American Elegance to their own yards, Breyer’s advice is simple: start small. “Find something you love,” he says. “Something you’ll enjoy every day.” Because to Todd Breyer, elegance isn’t just design — it’s a feeling. A connection. A moment of beauty waiting just outside the door. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MO UN TJ UL I E T

Putting Your Best Face Forward How Glow Wilco Blends Inner Wellness with Outer Confidence As the January wellness season arrives, a time when many people are craving a reset, Glow Wilco in Mount Juliet offers a refreshing reminder that true well-being isn’t about overhauls or rigid rules. It’s about harmony. It’s about alignment. And, according to Shauna Bowers, FNP-C, co-owner of Glow Wilco alongside Katie Jorge, APRN, CRNA and Nicole Stroop, MSN, FNP-BC, IFMCP, a functional medicine and wellness provider on the team, it’s about honoring the deep connection between how we feel on the inside and how we show up on the outside. “We see the body as one integrated system,” they share. “Your skin, mood, hormones, and energy all communicate with each other.” When someone is stressed, inflamed, depleted, or hormonally out of balance, those internal struggles often become visible through breakouts, puffiness, dullness, or accelerated aging. And when people don’t feel aligned with their appearance, it can affect motivation, confidence, and even how they engage in their relationships and daily lives. This belief in whole-person wellness is the foundation of Glow Wilco’s approach. Aesthetic care and functional medicine aren’t separate offerings; they’re complementary pathways to helping clients feel as good as they look, and look as good as they feel. Aesthetic treatments, Shauna and Nicole explain, can be surprisingly supportive to emotional wellness. “When someone looks in

the mirror and finally sees their outside reflecting how vibrant they feel inside, it’s transformative.” These services aren’t about perfection; they’re about restoration. For many, small enhancements help them reconnect with themselves after life shifts like motherhood, illness, hormonal changes, or prolonged stress. January is often filled with high-pressure promises, but Glow Wilco’s philosophy is more sustainable: start small, and build habits that support both body and mind. They recommend simple, attainable rituals that make an impact quickly-stepping into morning sunlight to regulate cortisol and mood; prioritizing a protein-forward breakfast to stabilize energy and curb cravings; taking a three-minute nervous system reset with breath work, cold water on the face, or legs up the wall; ending the day with magnesium or calming tea; and adopting a minimal, consistent skincare routine. “Tiny habits compound,” they say. “They’re doable, and they elevate overall well-being.”
Functional medicine remains central to their care model. Unlike traditional medicine, which asks, “What diagnosis fits these symptoms?” functional medicine digs deeper: “Why did these symptoms begin?” By exploring gut health, hormone balance, nutrient levels, inflammation, toxin exposure, and chronic stress patterns, Nicole helps uncover the root causes of issues like acne, brain fog, fatigue, bloating, mood swings, and weight fluctuations. When the foundation is healed, outward symptoms often improve naturally. They also share some of their favorite everyday wellness “hacks” that offer a big return for minimal effort: • Drink electrolytes before caffeine to support hydration and energy. • Take a 10-minute walk after meals to help regulate blood sugar. • Choose olive oil or avocado oil instead of seed oils to reduce inflammation. • Maintain consistent sleep and wake times for better rest and mood. • Include protein and plants at every meal to support gut, skin, and hormone health. • Incorporate red light therapy to boost mood, energy, and skin vitality. The transformations they witness at Glow Wilco are profound: clients finding energy again, reducing chronic symptoms, easing hormonal distress, and even conceiving after fertility challenges. “Physical healing becomes the gateway to emotional healing,” they say. As clients begin feeling better from the inside out, they often rediscover confidence, connection, and a renewed sense of possibility. For the Glow team, “putting your best face forward” in this season of renewal is about alignment-showing up as the most grounded, nourished, energized version of yourself. At Glow Wilco, they’re committed to guiding clients toward that internal and external glow, one sustainable step at a time. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MO UN TJ UL I E T

Creating a Better Snowman A Few Tips to Get You Rolling
There’s probably no more quintessential symbol of winter than a snowman. We’ve all seen Frosty and are probably pretty familiar with Olaf. But if you want to install one into your own yard, you’ll have to put a little elbow grease into creating one without the help of world-class animators. Here are some tips to help give your yard a well-dressed frozen sentry sure to turn your neighbors’ heads.
well-packed snowball and get rolling, but don’t just go in one direction. Roll the ball to start accumulating snow, then roll back, then roll in a different direction. Pack and begin to shape your snowball as you go. Reinforce as necessary. Look to use a 3-2-1 ratio for the sections.
Tip 3:
EVEN SNOWMEN CRAVE STABILITY.
Tip 1:
NOT ALL SNOW IS SNOWMAN SNOW. It takes more than a flurry to build a snowman. Heavy, slushy snow won’t work, and if it’s too powdery dry it won’t pack together. If you can pack a good snowball, you can build a snowman. Bonus tip: Dry snow can be modified to workable snowman snow with a quick spritz of water from a spray bottle, or a light mist from that garden hose you really should have already put away for the winter.
Tip 2:
ROLL TOWARDS YOUR GOAL — THE LONG WAY. Decide where to position your snowman and make that your finish line. Start with a
Once you get your base section in place, shore up the bottom with snow. Then at the top, create a bowl-shaped indentation to allow the next section to sit securely. Ensure each section is well-packed with added snow around the “joint” between the sections.
Tip 4:
SNOW IS HEAVY. ENLIST A BUDDY. A willing helper can help lift that heavy next stage into place. You can even roll it onto a tarp and lift from either side to get it up there. A third set of hands can help move it into place. Otherwise, use plywood as a ramp to roll it up yourself (braced well against the bottom with plenty of support underneath, so as to not damage the base). You might need an extra bowl of Wheaties to roll it up there alone.
Tip 5:
PILOT HOLES ARE YOUR FRIEND. Simply jamming details into your snowman can mess with its integrity. Use a sharp stick to gently create some pilot holes for your features before you set them into place.
Tip 6:
GIVE HIM SOME PERSONALITY. There’s always that classic snowman uniform of a scarf, hat, a carrot nose and coal (sure, we all have that lying around these days — river rocks might be easier to get your hands on). Or you could be a bit more creative, maybe with an old oversized Hawaiian shirt, a jazzy vest, or go all-out and channel your inner Martha Stewart, breaking out your Dremel to make something custom for your wintery lawn guest. You might need to use your imagination — not many of us have corncob pipes or top hats anymore, either. Pro tip: if you’re dressing your snowman, put any body clothing you might use on before adding the arms. Just remember. If you mess it up, it’s ok because he’ll be back again some day.

Jessica’s passion for this movement-first philosophy began years ago, when she watched her daughter transform inside a Knoxville gym. “We watched her grow stronger, more confident, and so proud of every new skill she mastered,” Jessica says. “We fell in love not only with the program, but with the way it empowers children through movement, play, and encouragement.” When her family moved back to Mount Juliet, opening a Little Gym felt like a natural extension of the community that raised her. “We knew families here would embrace a place where children can build confidence, friendships, and lifelong skills—all in a nurturing, joyful environment.” That joy is woven into everything the gym does. In a world full of distractions, especially screens, The Little Gym makes movement irresistible. There are no competitions, pressures to perform, or comparisons. Instead, children are invited to be themselves, try new things, and learn at their own pace. “When kids feel supported and have fun, they naturally get excited about moving their bodies,” Jessica says. Classes spark curiosity, celebrate small wins, and help even the shyest learners open up. But the benefits reach far beyond forward rolls and cartwheels. Jessica sees how physical activity shapes kids’ emotional and

social development. “Movement is essential for both physical and emotional well-being,” she says. “When children have a space to learn and master new skills, it builds confidence and self-esteem. They learn to work together, take turns, encourage others, and be part of a team.” Through the gym’s “Citizen Kid” philosophy, something bigger unfolds—children learn to belong. For families unsure where to begin at home, Jessica’s advice is simple: start small, stay consistent, and play together. “Limit screen time, encourage imaginative play, and give kids space to explore,” she says. “Go for walks, dance in the kitchen, play at the park. When movement is fun and shared, it naturally becomes part of daily life.” The magic of The Little Gym is also in the way it blends gymnastics, music, and imaginative play. Coaches meet each child where they are and celebrate every bit of progress. “Our program is intentionally designed to be engaging and fun,” Jessica says. “When kids feel supported and have fun, they can’t wait to come back.” Parents often say class feels more like a party than a workout. Some moments go even deeper. Jessica remembers one little girl who joined the gym delayed in standing and walking. After just a few weeks of classes—and her parents practicing skills at home—she took her first steps on the gym floor. “The room erupted in cheers,” Jessica recalls. “Her parents cried happy tears. It was a powerful reminder of what community, movement, and encouragement can do.”
That sense of community is no accident. Jessica and her team intentionally involve parents in the learning process, making them partners rather than spectators. From cheering in class to family events, the gym has become a place where caregivers connect, celebrate, and support each other. “No one feels alone; we’re all in this together,” she says. Looking ahead, The Little Gym has a full calendar of excitement. In the new year, families can expect expanded offerings, including dance classes, sports-based programs, and tummy time classes for babies 0 to 4 months. “We’re always looking for new ways to support families,” Jessica says. “We can’t wait to offer even more opportunities for kids to move, grow, and celebrate together.” In a fast-paced world, The Little Gym of Mount Juliet reminds families that one of the greatest investments is also the simplest: giving children the chance to move freely, explore confidently, and grow joyfully—from the very beginning. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
AND PROVIDED
Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, rootcause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
The New Frontier of Health
SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
“WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
