We bring the beach to your backyard.
Of course, this month all eyes are on "fathers," taking the time to celebrate what they mean to us and honoring their presence in our lives.
I'll never forget the time when I was a little girl and my dad was my whole world. He never dismissed an opportunity to draw with me and teach me how to cook in the kitchen. To this day my dad will get right down on the floor with my own girls and retreat to being a 5-year-old again. There is something light-hearted about fathers to their daughters; nothing else can compare. I love watching my husband's bond grow with our girls. From "Daddy" to "bruh," you have to laugh sometimes. (haha).
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
We loved sharing about so many incredible men in our community this month! Take a moment to read about the pillars of Mount Juliet, to the young entrepreneurs who are making moves. One of our own made it all the way to top 8 on American Idol. You're always a winner in our book, Oliver Steele! We are grateful to share your story.
We hope you take the time to recognize those men in your life who have made a difference regardless of the role they have played.
Happy Father’s Day!

ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF AMERICAN IDOL
Oliver Steele took American Idol by storm with an unpretentious presence that blends perfectly with a voice that shifts effortlessly between dulcet tones and easy power.
The 25-year-old, who has lived in Mount Juliet since he was four, landed in the elite eight of this season’s competition on the strength of refreshing versions of songs ranging from “Georgia On My Mind” to Radiohead’s pop staple “High & Dry,” Shania Twain’s “Still The One,” and his stunning original, “Too Soon.”
He won the admiration of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, as well as an adoring public that has watched more than a million of his individual performances on various platforms.
Recently we caught up with him by phone while he and his fellow Idol cast members were en route to Indio, California, to watch Bryan’s performance at Stagecoach Festival.
We get up at 7:30 a.m. and go to the lot, and we’re there until 6 or 7 at night. A lot goes into it, not just rehearsing and vocal coaching. There’s wardrobe, stage blocking, there’s always something to be done, and it’s seven days a week. The food is pretty good. We’re on our own for dinner, but for breakfast and lunch, we’re treated pretty well.
HOW MUCH INTERACTION DO YOU HAVE WITH THE JUDGES?
Not too much. Occasionally we’ll see them walking around, but we really only see them on the show. Lionel will stop and say high. But we work quite a bit with Kris Pooley, the show’s musical director. We talk about how we want a song to sound. He gives us pretty good latitude creatively. And dealing with the band is an awesome opportunity and a lot of fun.
We’re with each other every single day. We love each other, and we’re all very close. It’s hard to see contestants go home. It was tough the day after we cut from the top 20 to 12. It was very quiet on the lot.
But for the longer term, I feel like all these people will be in my life forever. Absolutely. Iam Tongi (Steele’s duet partner on “Save Your Tears”) is like a little brother to me.
YOU WERE SEEN PLAYING A PRS JOHN MAYER SILVER SKY GUITAR. IS THAT YOUR GUITAR, OR DOES IT BELONG TO THE SHOW?
It is my guitar, a PRS SE. I got it at Shiloh Music in Mount Juliet. It may have gotten my attention because of John, but I got it because once I played it, it felt incredible. It’s signed by a few of my heroes: Cory Wong, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Katy, Lionel and Luke. And Tomo Fujita, who was John Mayer’s teacher at Berklee (College of Music).
AS AN ARTIST, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS MORE OF A SONGWRITER OR PERFORMER?
I don’t really believe in dissecting things too much. I write. I perform. I play. I don’t like the idea of one over the other. I never considered myself a guitar player, but I like to play and use the guitar when I perform. I’ve always felt like writing is creative and an outlet to express myself. It feels right to me, probably because I wrote poetry before I wrote songs.
WHERE DO YOU PLAY AROUND NASHVILLE?
Usually downtown at The Twelve Thirty Club (550 Broadway) or in Printers Alley. I’ve played Whisky Jam (at Winners Bar & Grill in Midtown) a couple of times. I was supposed to play recently, but I’ve been doing American Idol.
YOUR FAMILY, PARTICULARLY THE HEALTH OF YOUR FATHER, MUSICIAN TOBY STEELE, HAS BEEN A LARGE PART OF YOUR IDOL STORY. HOW IS HE DOING AND HOW IS YOUR FAMILY INSPIRING YOU?
He’s still on dialysis every day, but he’s in Mount Juliet and doing alright. He’s very excited and proud. Sometimes I can’t tell him things because he’ll spoil it! I’m grateful for my family. My little sister and big brother and my mom as an emotional guidance system. My grandmother on my dad’s side is from Manila, so I’m proud of my Filipino heritage. I haven’t been there to visit, but I want to go.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU FOLLOWING AMERICAN IDOL?
Man, I really don’t know. It’s hard to make plans when you don’t know how this thing is going to end. People are wanting me to play, and I can’t give them answers until we’re done with the show, but I think some bright things are ahead. At some point, I’d really like to go back to Hawai’i. We filmed an episode of Idol on Oahu in February, and it was a great vibe and a great time.
THE IMPROBABLE STORIES OF HOW MOUNT JULIET’S MOST INFLUENTIAL MEN REACHED THEIR RANKS
City Manager Kenny Martin, Police Chief James Hambrick, Chamber of Commerce President Mark Hinesly, and Parks and Recreation Director Rocky Lee all share a love for Mount Juliet that is evident in their work. Each of them has left an imprint on what has become of the most desired cities to live in in one of the most desired states. Servant leadership is something they all model within their departments, which makes a difference in the identity of the City, as you will find out.
ARTICLE BY JUSTIN BEASLEY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRYSTAL STEPHENS
The title of Police Chief tells only a snippet of who James Hambrick really is. Christian. Minister. Veteran. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Musician. He takes great pride in serving all of those roles. That pride is what landed him a career in law enforcement. Hambrick often tells the story of working nights at the Mapco in Mount Juliet, when now City Manager Kenny Martin, a former Police Chief of Mt. Juliet, “saw something” in Hambrick by the way he handled the store and his conversations with customers. Hambrick told Mount Juliet Police during his interview that he was coming for a career, as he worked his way from dispatch to reserve office to then patrol officer in 1996. All stepping stones that led him to become Police Chief in 2012. A Co-Pastor at Cloyd’s Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Hambrick wants you to know he’s been ministering much longer than policing. Perhaps it’s why he’s best known for often telling his officers and any group he’s speaking to, “I love you, and there’s nothing you can do about it.” “That’s because of the Christ in me,” he says. You can see it in his on display in his daily interactions, by the success of the Mount Juliet Police Department. You can hear it in his eight-song album titled “Somebody’s Gotta Tell Them,” written off his experiences in law enforcement.
Kenny Martin has worn many hats within the governing walls of the City of Mount Juliet, from patrol officer to Police Chief, to Economic Development Director and now City Manager since 2011. He would tell you simply his job for all four has been the same – to serve the citizens within Mount Juliet. Martin is one of two City positions, City Manager and City Judge, that is appointed. His primary job is to run the City’s day-to-day operations but also carry out the vision of the four elected commissioners and the Mayor. His 11 and ½ years serving as City Manager is enough evidence to show his success, as it’s rare to find someone in that role to serve that long. Martin is most prideful of the cleanliness of Mount Juliet, picking up trash daily on his fourmile-long walks to Lebanon Road and back from City Hall every day and starting a City Beautiful department, who’s tasked with picking up litter and improving the city’s aesthetics any way possible. It’s the broken window theory that Martin credits as why parents choose to move to Mount Juliet, why new businesses invest, and why crime isn’t an issue locally. “Make Mount Juliet better today than it was yesterday and better tomorrow than it is today,” Martin often says. No one is a better example of that than Martin himself over the last 33 years working for the City of Mount Juliet.
Rocky Lee is just one of the guys. He acts, dresses, talks, and works just like the rest of his team, which is why he’s had their utmost respect for the last 10+ years as the longest-tenured Parks Director in the City of Mount Juliet’s history. “My dad was like that, and he taught me that don’t ask someone else to do something you wouldn’t do” Lee said. Whether it’s shoveling rocks, landscaping, etc., don’t be surprised to see Rocky sporting a high-visibility orange shirt and getting in the trenches with his crew. His construction, house painting, welding, and maintenance background still comes in handy. That blue-collar mentality helped him get hired in the City Parks Department in 2000, where Rocky admits he was the “lowest man on the totem pole.” But as opportunity would have it, Rocky, through consistent work and a positive attitude, was named Parks Director in 2013. The renovation of Planet Playground, the addition of Ava’s Splash Pad, and the continuous improvement to the Parks infrastructure are what he’s most proud of. Rocky’s most known for his work between the lines coaching ball teams for 30 years. If you said he was the most recognizable face in the city, it would be hard to argue against it. His wife, Rene, of 43 years, jokes that the two can never go out without him talking to a handful of people he sees. Again, he’s just one of the guys.
Mark Hinesly remembers the day he had a pickup truck, measuring wheel, a fertilizer spreader, and not a single customer for his chemical lawn care business. He had mortgaged everything to go into business for himself. He recalls the sheer terror and excitement of owning a business yet being responsible for everything, which is why he can relate to every new member joining the Mount Juliet Chamber of Commerce, located in the middle of downtown Mount Juliet for the past six years. He loves the enthusiasm, passion, and risk-taking that comes with being a business owner. Those characteristics make Hinesly, President of the Chamber, appreciate the Chamber of Commerce now as much as he did 25+ years ago when he was just a member. By now, Hinsely understands his role precisely. “(We’re) not in the real estate business, not in the marketing business; we are here to create an environment that makes it a place where people want to do business.” Look no further than the long list of new businesses coming to Mount Juliet despite the tough economic structure stemming from the 2020 Covid shutdown. While Hinesly’s made a significant impact over three decades, he points out the foundation was laid well before him. “The people in Mount Juliet today, we are drinking out of the well that somebody dug a long time ago.”

The 2023 Buick Enclave is a mid-size luxury Crossover SUV with third-row seating that embraces the utility part of the SUV. The Enclave shares its architecture with the GMC Acadia and the Chevrolet Traverse. If you’ve spent time in either, you’ll feel a sense of deja vu. The Enclave has an immense amount of space and utility. Like most seven-seater crossovers, the interior room is plentiful, leading its segment for cargo capacity and third row legroom. Regarding cargo and utility, the Enclave is in a class all to itself.
There are three trim levels: Essence Premium and Avenir. All come with a 310 horsepower V6 engine that provides power in a manner I would call “nana friendly.”All-wheel drive or front-wheel drive is optional across all trims. All
three also share a positively sublime ride, whisper-quiet driving experience, and a ninespeed automatic transmission. Road trip ready.
The Essence trim level starts at $44,000, and the top trim level, Avenir, tucks in just under $60,000, but if you go wild and tick all the boxes to include the dealer-installed goodies, you can easily creep above $70,000. If you go all in on the top-tier model, you’ll have a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control and a panoramic moonroof. Amazon Alexa is available, as well as a wifi hotspot. Wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto will ensure your navigation and entertainment needs will always be met, and the wireless phone charging tray means you’ll never run out of juice. If you opt for the towing package, you’ll have a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. After the trailer's weight, you’ll be pretty limited in how much weight you can handle, but the utility of seven seats is something no traditional pickup truck can match.
The exterior is typical for a seven-seater crossover. Remove the badges, and all the cars in this segment tend to blend. The Buick stands out with an entirely different front grill for the top trim Avenir trim level and standard 20” aluminum wheels finished in pearl nickel.
After spending some time with the Enclave, I asked one of the salespeople, “Who is the target buyer for one of these?” Straight away, he said, “People who already have one. They’re just upgrading to the new model.” This was a bit of an ‘ah ha’ moment for me, the Enclave started to make more sense. If Buick knows this and builds its car accordingly, why would it divert from the norm or make bold styling decisions? They don’t need to. All they need to do is keep things familiar, and people who love the brand and their product will keep buying them. Maybe Buick and its Enclave have tapped into a corner of the market that wants the same from their car as they do from comfort food like Chicken Noodle soup. It doesn’t need to be flashy, doesn’t need to impress, sometimes though it's exactly what you want.

After studying business at the University of Alabama and achieving an MBA, Jacob Kelsoe eventually met his longtime goal of owning and operating his own business. Jacob is now the owner of three Hotworx studio locations here in Middle Tennessee. These studios are equipped with several individualized infrared saunas designed to maximize your workout experience and are available for clients to use 24/7.
In 2020, Jacob first purchased the Hotworx Midtown location in Nashville and, soon after, in 2021, decided to build a studio location in Mt. Juliet. It wouldn’t be long until he took on a third studio, Hotworx Cool Springs. He states, “I always enjoyed studying businesses and how they ran and what made them successful... I really enjoyed the aspect of figuring it out.”
Jacob enjoys managing a business like Hotworx because it serves many people with a wide range of needs. Whether a client is recovering from an injury, looking for a new form of fitness, or just getting started, he is dedicated to ensuring his business meets those standards. Jacob’s resilience in business comes from his ability to keep going no matter what, to continue to improve, and never to give up.

When a firefighter of 17 years begins searching for a career shift, owning a charcuterie business might not be at the top of the list. But for Brent Stephens, the more he searched for something new, the further he was guided down the path to Graze Craze, a charcuterie shop specializing in all things charcuterie boards and boxes.
In December of 2022, Brent was given the opportunity to take ownership of Graze Craze Charcuterie in Mount Juliet and diligently served our community with fresh, customizable charcuterie boards, boxes, and box cups for events large and small. Graze Craze meats and cheeses are all cut in-house. Hummuses and jams are freshly made as well. “Whether it’s big business, small business, corporations, family, church. Whatever it is, I have something for everybody.”
Brent takes his service to our community seriously and credits his desire to serve for his business success. “It’s all about serving people. If you don’t want to serve people and meet their needs, then you’re not going to succeed.”
Folks in Mount Juliet can rest easy knowing that if they ever need an attorney, they don’t have to go to Nashville to find one. Christopher Eads is one of the few lawyers located here in Mount Juliet. Representing the residents of this city is something he takes very seriously.
Chris started practicing law at larger firms. He found himself in a revolving door of assignments requiring him to work in practice or specialized groups with no real opportunity for growth or connection to the clients. “Working in the bigger firms, you don’t really get to do what you want per se. A lot of times, they delegate to you what your case is. They put you in practice groups, and I always felt like you were limited... I just thought, ‘There’s much more to being a lawyer.’”
Chris eventually decided to branch out and open his firm, The Law Offices of Christopher Eads, in Mount Juliet. His firm focuses primarily on personal injury and employment law, aiming to offer the direct support and communication that each client deserves. “What sets us apart is that the clients actually get to talk and deal with the attorney they retain.”
While understanding the challenges of creating his firm, Chris ultimately decided to bet on himself. And Mount Juliet is better for it.
Christopher Eads
Attorney/Founder, The Law Offices of Christopher Eads
“What sets us apart is that the clients actually get to talk and deal with the attorney they retain.”John Zendrosky Financial Advisor, Northwestern Mutual
It’s been an exciting year for John Zendrosky as he uses his expertise as a financial advisor to go above and beyond for his clients through Northwestern Mutual. He is committed to helping people and creating the blueprint that gets them to their financial goals. What people may not know is that, for John, this isn’t just a job. This is personal.
John gained first-hand experience in what could happen when someone neglects to have a solid financial plan for themselves and their family. He opened up to us about his family and what it felt like to watch his father endure the challenges of not having a proper financial strategy to guide him. At 60, his father was diagnosed with a serious health condition and found himself at the start of a tumultuous journey. John explains, “He couldn’t go to work anymore. He lost his job, lost his benefits. He had to pull all his retirement money out to pay medical bills... If he had [long-term disability], he would still be earning a paycheck.” John notes that this personal experience moves him to help others not fall into the same traps. He makes it his duty to teach people the importance of planning for retirement, investments, education, long-term care, life insurance, long-term disability, and more.
John credits his success in business to finding the right people, finding the right network, and surrounding himself with a community that fosters resiliency. He is a heavy hitter in the financial world as he helps people learn and progress so that each generation can be better than the last. “People generationally make the same mistakes that their parents make. So, I love being able to teach someone even if they never become a client.” Now that’s something we can all stand behind.
Do you have the grit to wake up and learn something new? This is the question Patrick Robinson had to answer as he found himself leaving the world of corporate America and embarking on an entirely different journey. Film, filters, photography, and videography had always piqued Patrick’s interest but never manifested beyond a side hustle.
Patrick continuously worked to refine his abilities in photography and videography. And as his skills grew, so did his popularity among businesses and community members. “I think we’re in this unique time to be alive where you can learn literally anything... Don’t ever discount where your life might take you. I think it’s a series of serendipitous events that lead people to where they are.” Patrick’s rigor and diligence as a creative would soon lead him to take a leap of faith and start his own business.
In 2020, as the world was bracing for a pandemic, Patrick quit his corporate job once and for all and opened Relive Studio. Relive Studio is a creative agency focusing on commercial videography and various other facets of photography. Whether an individual or a business, Patrick has the experience and the ability to elevate one’s online presence with compelling content that will stop followers from scrolling.
Relive Studio undoubtedly benefits from the unique concentration of creatives and new businesses in Nashville, Mount Juliet, and other surrounding areas. “Every day is different in Nashville. One day the subject might be a musician. One day it might be a new business that’s just starting. I think we’re unique in the sense that we have a tremendous amount of creatives per capita than other places.” Patrick’s artistry in capturing raw footage and understanding its importance fuels his capacity to provide content that boosts momentum.
Our community and creatives have significantly benefited because Patrick decided to follow his passion. Standing at the intersection of change and comfort can be frightening, but it is where people like Patrick begin to inspire us.
