The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. As I get older I realize that it wasn't always my grandmother's famous Apple Pies or my Parent's incredible Christmas Dinners sometimes refreshingly non-traditional, that brought the most joy to our family, but the house full of people and the table full of family that made the holidays special. I am thankful that my husband and I share the value of family first and always make the effort to re-create those memories for our children even if we have to travel to do so. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

Mount Juliet native and local meteorologist, Heather Mathis, addressed a growing concern for the lack of shelter for those living in vulnerable housing during severe weather conditions. With the help of State Rep. Jason Powell, the "Safer Places Bill” (HB1080), was signed into law in April 2023. This law clarifies that any organization that opens its doors to the public is not liable for loss, damages, injury, or death that results from providing shelter from severe weather. Each year, Home Instead in Lebanon TN participates in the Be a Santa to a Senior program (BASTAS). BASTAS provides gifts for seniors who are lonely and financially challenged. Since introducing the program, Home Instead, nationally, has helped provide more than 2 million gifts to needy and isolated seniors. BASTAS has attracted upwards of 65,000 volunteers. Volunteer Network TN Partners with The Family Resource Center On November 3, Volunteer Network partnered with The Family Resource Center for Wilson County Schools and ten nonprofits in our community to host a Poverty Simulation for County Commissioners and School Board representatives. Nestled at the intersection of Davidson, Wilson, and Rutherford County, you’ll find the perfect getaway spot and event venue, but it didn’t start out that way. Back in 2012, Dan Liles attended a farm equipment auction but ended up buying 120 acres instead. He shares, “I bid one time and bought the farm.” He swears it’s not a Cinderella story but it sure sounds like one. Staying true to their roots, Dan and his wife, Lisa, began farming pumpkins, melons, and corn. The property was originally a horse farm and came equipped with a hay loft, stables, and cabins. The Liles began to

explore agrotourism, where land can be used for both educational and recreational purposes. This unique blend of agriculture and tourism became an apparent way for them to support their farming efforts. This niche includes hospitality and farm stays, so they converted the hay loft to a bunkhouse and updated the cabins. Recognizing the opportunity to incorporate events, the stables were converted into a versatile event center. Rural Hill Farm quickly grew to become one of the best hidden gems in Middle Tennessee and is a popular

destination for weddings and other large events. Couples have come from as far as California to spend a weekend of bliss with their family and friends on this peaceful estate. Wedding packages include three full days to allow guests to settle in and enjoy the festivities. One bride said, “Rural Hill Farm was the absolute best location to throw our wedding weekend. The surrounding property is lush and serene. It feels like there is no one nearby but yourself.” The owners truly want your event to be as stress-free as possible. They welcome guests to bring their own vendors or can provide a list of tried-and-true local businesses to help with everything from set up, décor, catering, and more! Between the cabins and bunkhouse, Rural Hill Farm offers accommodations for up to 50 and parking for 500. They have two pavilions for events as well as “The Woods” venue which offers a whimsical feel with natural elements in addition to modern amenities including electricity. The farm averages 25-30 wedding weekends per year but has also hosted a wide variety of activities including corporate retreats/picnics, family reunions, and cultural celebrations. Along with the relaxing atmosphere, guests are likely to experience wildlife such as deer, geese, and turkey while being in close proximity to both shopping and restaurants in Mount Juliet or the excitement of downtown Nashville. Being a quick Uber or Lyft ride from the airport is also a convenient perk.

This past year Rural Hill Farm expanded to include 17 full hookup RV sites with a bathhouse and laundry facilities as well as an ADA-accessible cabin. These can be reserved year-round with or without an event. These sites overlook the two-acre pond with iconic sunset views. Events Manager, Emily Kimball, says they have hosted several repeat campers. Louie and Kelly said, “This is such a beautiful and serene place. The pond was such a pleasant place to walk around and take in all the peace that nature affords.” In the winter months, they have families who choose to spend the holidays away from the hustle and bustle and celebrate together gathered around the long farmhouse table in the bunkhouse which can seat up to 25 for meals, puzzles, and board games. While hospitality and events are what most people have come to expect from Rural Hill Farm, Liles says they are still an operational commercial farm and a family business. They live on the property, so you’ll definitely see them and their adult son working as they rotate between corn and soybeans. The Liles family also loves supporting other local businesses and organizations. One of their most meaningful events was the annual Wilson Rides fundraiser. They were host to several local songwriters and some of Wilson County’s most notable citizens and key figures including the mayor. SWEET CHARITY Local Jeweler Proves That it is Only by Giving That You Can Receive More Than You Have

Philanthropy can, in the most paradoxical way, seem like a luxury of the privileged. One could be forgiven for assuming only the ‘elite’ among us, especially in today’s economy, can even afford to be generous. However, one legendary woman, at the helm of a successful local business, shows us that philanthropy can be personal and profound. Carolyn Linder is the proprietor of Lindell Jewelers, a family-owned jewelry store located in Brentwood, TN. She has successfully run this business for over 29 years. And while she’s well-known for her stunning jewelry, she’s also known for her spirit of generosity. In her case, charity is not a perfunctory part of success – it’s motivated by deeply personal reasons. Linder, not unlike other successful businesswomen (Coco Chanel comes to mind), was an orphan. At the tender age of nine, she arrived at

Monroe Harding – a stately colonial in Nashville that housed children without homes. It was here that she experienced for the first time things that most children take for granted. Linder recounts, “I had never slept in my own bed. I did not understand what Christmas or birthdays were about. Having three square meals each day was wonderful.” In addition to material necessities, Monroe Harding provided children like Linder with something utterly priceless. When recalling her formative childhood years at this storied institution, Linder says, “I felt safe there.” For a child who did not experience the stability and security of loving parents, this was monumental. Though Linder notes that in her adulthood, she still struggled with feelings of self-worth and navigating the world without parental guidance, she became stronger for it – and perhaps it was the love that she felt from her first home that gave her the confidence to launch her own business. It makes sense then why, to this day, Linder donates jewelry to Monroe Harding events. “Philanthropy is important to me because when I had nothing, some wonderful people silently cared for us at Monroe Harding. They helped shape the people we are today, and they made our lives better. I will always give until I can’t give anymore. Kindness is special to me.” And today, she is not just a successful business owner, philanthropist, and pillar of the community, but she is a mother to two, “amazing, strong, and independent ladies,” for whom she says she tried to be the mother she never had. For a woman who grew up with nothing, she has given everything back. “When God calls me home, I want people to remember that I was kind and would give the shirt off my back if another needed it.”

From Mount Juliet to Lebanon to Watertown, Wilson Rides and its team of volunteer drivers are making transportation easier for older adults.

There’s no getting around it: getting around can be a challenge for older adults who no longer drive. And as Wilson County has grown, so has the demand for reliable transportation for the seniors who live here. The emergence of rideshares has alleviated some of the burden, but those services can be expensive. That’s what prompted local leaders, including Maggie Lea of Home Instead and Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto, to approach the Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce's Healthcare Roundtable about developing a program to address those needs. By late 2020, those discussions led to the establishment of Wilson Rides, a nonprofit organization that utilizes volunteer drivers to provide rideshare transportation for eligible Wilson County seniors, ages 55 and up. Gaye Lynn Wilson, who was hired as executive director in early 2021, oversaw the ramp-up to the first official ride on May 21 of that year. The passenger was none other than Wilson’s mom, Gloria. The driver: Mt. Juliet Chamber of Commerce President, Mark Hinesely. “Mom was the reason why I got involved in this and she’s still a participant,” says Wilson. “She gave

up driving in 2019 but was still very active, and I was trying to figure out how she could remain that way while I worked a full-time job.” The devastating tornado of March 2020, followed by the pandemic a few days later, were motivating factors as well. “That’s when I realized the importance of keeping seniors safe and engaged,” says Wilson. “Life goes on but for seniors who lack transportation, that can mean isolation and missing important appointments. Wilson Rides helps alleviate those concerns.” Wilson says that there are many heartwarming stories of Wilson Rides facilitating relationships, including a driver and rider who had never met previously, discovering they grew up at the same time in the same Wisconsin town. Drivers are the driving force behind Wilson Rides’ success. “They’re the ones who establish relationships with seniors and keep them connected to the community,” says Wilson. “Most of them are retirees and have probably had similar experiences with their own parents and grandparents.” Detailed information for current and prospective riders and drivers, and a donation portal, are available at WilsonRidesInc.org.

The great writer Samuel Johnson once said “… [W]hen a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." This could not be more true as London is filled with culture, history, arts, food, and just about everything one could imagine. It would take a lifetime to explore everything this city has to offer, but even if you only have a few days in London, it’s still possible to pack in the highlights! With direct flights traveling from Nashville to London’s Heathrow Airport, it’s the perfect destination for a dedicated vacation or a weekend layover trip on the way to another European destination. While seeing the sights can be done on a “hop on hop off” bus-made tour, there are other modes of transportation that can let you experience the landmarks. London is filled with “free” walking tours where a local will take a small group around the city to see the landmarks, share history, and give recommendations of their favorite local restaurants, pubs, and activities. These tours can be booked online through

companies like SANDEMANs NEW Europe or Free Tours by Foot and at the end of the tour, you simply tip the tour guide what you think the tour was worth. Another option is to take an Uber boat down the Thames River. Doubling as both transportation and sightseeing, depending on where you hop on the boat, you can cruise past Big Ben, Parliament, the London Eye, and even under Tower Bridge. Simply pay with your Uber app! The city buses also have routes that take riders past many must-see landmarks (check out the “bus leisure routes” on Transport for London’s website). For those wanting to try a variety of food outside of the traditional restaurant setting or do a little shopping, London is brimming with unique markets to peruse. Borough Market is filled with stalls selling everything from freshly baked bread to mushroom risotto and everything in between. If you’re looking to bring home an antique souvenir or new outfit, head over to Portobello Market in the charming Notting Hill neighborhood for their street market. Stroll the streets of cotton candy colored pastel houses while looking through vintage clothes, cameras, and tea sets. Old Spitalfields Market and Camden Market also have their own offerings worth checking out! For a little arts and culture, spend a morning wandering the streets of Shoreditch to see incredible street art or take in a show in London’s West End theatre district. The TKTS booth in Leicester Square even offers last-minute discounted tickets, making it easy to score a deal to some of the top shows! Another great place to take in a play is none other than Shakespeare’s Globe with standing tickets starting for as little as five pounds.

Furthermore, London is filled with amazing art museums including the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Modern, as well as interesting history museums like the Natural History Museum and the British Museum. A visit to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard and a walk around the gardens of Kensington Palace is also a must. And experience historic churches like St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey through their traditional Evensong services. Understanding the importance of a good cup of tea is crucial in England. Whether you decide to go the fancy route with a proper afternoon tea experience of finger sandwiches and delectable sweets or a more casual stop for cream tea—tea with milk—and scones, getting a good “cuppa” is a must when in London. Stop by a British pub for fish or chips or “bangers and mash” (sausage and mashed potatoes) and be sure to visit a “greasy spoon”—similar to an American diner—for an English breakfast or “fry up”. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.
