MAKING MEMORIES ON AND OFF THE ROAD
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY THOMAS AND LUCY RILES PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK ROBINSON
When most people think of "home," the traditional nuclear family comes to mind. For the McCombs, this is true, but you may not see how many hurdles they go through to stay connected as a family while growing two incredible careers. Jeremy and Kourtney always put their family first, whether on set or on tour. Jeremy is a singer-songwriter with Average Joes, and Kourtney is an actress, most known for her part on the hit show “Nashville” as Emily, Hayden Panettiere’s assistant. Together they have two young sons (Knox and Ryker) and Kennady (Jeremy's daughter and Kourtney's stepdaughter). In addition to traveling for work, Jeremy and his family enjoy taking the kids' summer break to travel together. Recently released was Jeremy's latest album, "Frontier Rock." "This album was something that amped things up in my career," says Jeremy. "We also just released my new single on February 25th, "Burned out," which is a song I feel represents my growth over the years, and I hope people will be able to hear that." Jeremy has had a long-standing career in the music industry, starting in radio and then touring with Blue Collar Comedy Tour, he also recently had his song “Didn’t We,” a song about his home town, cut by Tracy Lawrence. Hard work and determination take longevity to see success, and Jeremy has continued to ride the waves that the music industry can create. If you watched the Lifetime channel this past holiday season, you might have seen Kourtney in “Christmas In Tune” alongside Reba McEntyre and co-star John Schneider. "Having the opportunity to sit across from Reba and John, who are two absolute pros in the entertainment business and work on our scene, was one of the most surreal experiences of my life up to this point." Says Kourtney. "They are both wonderfully kind and fun people; you can't go wrong when

Reba herself says you have the most beautiful eyes." Kourtney has worked hard to sustain her career while also starting a family of her own, which is only feasible with the support of her husband Jeremy. Together they are nothing short of a power team. "Jeremy tries to keep his time on the road to two weeks at a time, and we always take advantage of things going on in our community as a family when he is home. Football Sundays and family movie nights are always a family activity, and dinner around our farmhouse table is our favorite place to connect at home." Says Kourtney. "Going on tour with Jeremy as a family is some of our most cherished memories, although a lot goes into it. The bus prep alone before a tour takes several days to make sure everything is ready to go." Says Kourtney. "From grocery shopping, stocking the bus, cleaning and loading up the dogs and kids, who don't need much mental prep…the littles are always SUPER excited when it's bus day!" Kourtney explains that despite the hurdles they have faced on tour, such as being frozen to the ground in -40 degree weather or blown out tires, they have come across some of the most "bad-ass" people who have set the tone for the way their family treats others. "Most people are kind and willing to help," says Jeremy. From prepping "Dolly," their tour bus, connecting, and making memories on and off the road, the McComb family dynamic is no different than two 9-5 working parents. Finding the in-between moments and cherishing them is all it takes to stay connected, and not taking these moments for granted is an everyday routine for them.

BUDDY ALLEN CARPET ONE PRIDES THEMSELVES ON TOP-NOTCH CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND QUALITY SERVICES
24
O UR TOWN | HOM E SERVI CE S
SERVICE IS THE FOUNDATION OF BUDDY ALLEN CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME While a leap of faith led to their humble beginnings, the unparalleled care for their clientele and attention to their culture has given Buddy Allen Carpet One Floor & Home a vitality most businesses dream of having. Established in 1964 by a family deeply rooted in and devoted to the Donelson and Wilson County areas, the company has built its reputation on providing quality flooring and exceptional service. "That's all it's ever been about, customer service," says co-founder Gary Allen. "We guarantee that if you don't like it for any reason, we'll take it up and replace it." The company began when Buddy Allen, who had years of experience in the flooring industry, and his son Gary decided to use their knowledge to launch their own business. Gary’s mother was working at Methodist publishing house, and his father, Buddy, was working for Carter Flooring. “We formed this company in this spot that we're sitting in right now,” Gary recalls. “My mother stayed at the publishing house as a secretary but would come in and do the books at night." Though anyone can start a business, the Allen family quickly proved valuable to middle Tennessee, focusing on customer care and satisfaction. "Service is the only thing
that gets you anywhere. Doing what you say you're going to do is the biggest thing," says co-founder Gary. "One thing that's never changed is our service," adds Jenna Allen, who runs business development. "Our installers - we know their families. We invest in them. They're all CFI certified, and we send them to regular training. It's not uncommon for a client to tell us how much they loved whoever installed their flooring." Their "top-down, people over profit" mentality laced throughout the fabric of their company's culture will give you extra confidence using them above another company. "It's a family tradition - not only the Allen family, but many families have had three generations work here as installers." And while their attention to customer care and company culture is undoubtedly applaudable, Buddy Allen's good deeds don't stop there. On May 11th and 12th, they will host their sixth annual golf tournament, raising money for 9-11-inspired non-profit Tunnels to Towers. "We have raised close to $200,000 so far - with our little office and the Wilson County community helping us." You can contact them for your home quotes or get involved with their nonprofit at buddyallencarpetonenashville.com/.

Lindsey Soklin, the owner of Luxe & Whimsy, is a homeschooling mom of two who started her career in the event planning industry. As an event planner, she often had the task of curating gifts for her clients. After noticing a need for personalized gifting options, she believed this could be a successful business opportunity creating a company where an individual could buy curated gifts directly from her, just as they would hire a DJ or a caterer. Shortly after she had kids, she decided to pursue this business idea, and in January of 2019, Luxe & Whimsy was born. Luxe & Whimsy, now a full-service gifting company, offers prepackaged and customizable gifts for individual, group, or corporate
purchases, all of which are available through their website. Lindsey loves to create unique, memorable gifts with a luxurious, high-end whimsical feel while staying true to her mission of making the gift-giving experience easy and enjoyable. While Lindsey performs the majority of the business operations, she brings in help for busy seasons. Her husband is also a substantial behind-the-scenes help, moving tables, boxes, and anything else Lindsey needs help with at the moment; her kids also like to get their hands in on the action when possible. Luxe & Whimsy was featured on Today in Nashville near the end of 2020 and since then has grown and expanded outside of Lindsey's home to a small warehouse space in Mount Juliet. Through the Luxe & Whimsy website, Lindsey can service individual customers locally and throughout the country while also serving her corporate clients that have included Warner Music, Hendrick Motorsports, Ricola, Allen Boutique, and more. Whether you need that one special gift, ten perfectly designed client gifts, or a fulfillment partner to mail out 10,000+ gifts on your behalf, Luxe & Whimsy has you covered! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work with your mom? Tammy Duncan started Birthright Title, LLC in 2015 alongside her daughters Taylor Johnson and Morgan O'Neill. From day one, it's been a family-owned and operated business, and they all agree that working together is the best part. A close second is the euphoric feeling of knowing you helped a first-time homeowner make their dream a reality. The family feel is a big part of what makes their office unique. With a primary goal of creating an environment that feels like home, these ladies go out of their way to help everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Realtors and clients alike rave about their impeccable customer service and ability to make closings feel smooth and easy, even in this challenging market. The real estate industry has experienced quite a few changes in the last couple of years, including how homebuyers complete the final signing process. Birthright Title adapted its business practices to include mobile and curbside closings in addition to cleaning protocols to help new homeowners feel safer. One of the biggest challenges they've recently faced is what all working parents have battled this past year – virtual learning! Taylor says having family support at home and in the office was critical in making it more bearable. They all teamed up to help her twin girls get their schooling done and keep the office running efficiently. Taylor believes they are the true definition of a team. The entire office is willing to step in and get the job done, whether it's business-related or being a teacher for part of the day. Another challenge of a family-owned company is trying not to talk about work when they spend time together outside of the office. Even with COVID challenges, Birthright Title is growing, having recently opened a second location in Carthage. Spring is the best time of year to throw open the windows, let the house air out and get in a deep clean after the winter greys fade. It’s also the perfect time to get a few organizing projects done! Tanna of Graced Space shares her favorite tips for getting started:

SPRING INTO ORGANIZING TIPS ON HOW TO DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE YOUR HOME ARTICLE BY TANNA CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MANDY LIZ PHOTOGRAPHY
DOES IT STAY OR DOES IT GO? Set up two boxes in each hallway or major living space. Label one “donate” and the other “relocate.” As you pick up, dust, and clean everything, decide what you are ready to get rid of and drop it in the donate box. If anything belongs in another room, put it in the relocate box to put away when you are finished.
WINTER WEAR Gather all the winter gear and get it washed and put away. This is a great time to get rid of anything outgrown and worn out from last season. Hang those clean coats in the back of the closet, or put all the winter gear together in one box. Make a note of who needs what for next year.
USE IT OR LOSE IT BIN It's safe to say we tend to spend "good money" on the latest and greatest makeup, toiletries, and even beard oils. You hate to waste money by throwing these things out, but once the money is gone, friends, it's gone. If you have bathroom goodies taking up space and you can't decide what to part with, create a "use it or lose it" bin to corral it all. If you try it and like it, add it to the routine; if you don't, let it go! Start using it now or lose it.
LINEN CLOSETS I've worked in many closets overrun with old towels, sheet sets, and all the extra stuff that doesn't have a home. The easiest way to tackle the abyss is to empty it all. Start over with the basics. Keep an extra set of sheets for each bed and let the rest go. Donate old towels to an animal rescue like Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary. Categorize everything else, put like with like, and decide on storage options. Again, now is your chance to toss anything you no longer need or use.
PANTRY PURGE Take an extra 10 minutes to check expiration dates in the pantry. Toss anything expired. A fun way to tackle the excess is to create a weekly menu plan only using what's in the pantry. Substitute anything you need, but the point is to use as much as possible and get creative with meal ideas. Do this anytime the pantry is starting to feel out of control.
GET THE GARAGE IN GEAR The garage tends to become a dumping ground during the winter. Gather the no longer needed items you've been tossing to the side and have that yard sale! Make the bicycles and outdoor toys easily accessible for the kids. Rethink your storage options and what you are storing. You don't have to tackle your garage in one day, but one box a week is doable. No matter what space you are working on, break it into small, manageable tasks. The clutter didn’t get there overnight, and unless you have a team to help you, it won’t disappear overnight either. Give yourself grace when it comes to your home. If doing this yourself seems too overwhelming, book a consultation with Tanna to do the work for you! gracedspace.com MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MO UN TJ UL I E T

Spring Forward
early planning and tips to acheive your dream landscape
ARTICLE BY SLOANE LUCAS

O UT D OOR LIV IN G | HOME S E RVI CE S
With a few weeks left of winter, it may be hard to think ahead to warmer weather, but spring is right around the corner, and it’s never too early to start planning for stunning lawns, eye-catching landscaping, and beautiful beds of flowers. To bring you the best advice, John Howard, owner of Lawns by Luke has several steps for you to take to achieve your dream yard. John owns a full-service landscaping business here in Mount Juliet, making homes shine come spring.
Q: WHAT SHOULD HOMEOWNERS DO NOW TO PREPARE? A: Give all of your landscaping an overhaul. This includes cleaning and treating your beds for weeds, pruning shrubs and trees, adding new mulch or rock, and more. It’s also a great time to schedule new plantings. If you have a treatment plan in place for your lawn, ensure you are getting your necessary pre-emergents and fertilizers out. It would help to install an irrigation system; water is the most integral part of a healthy lawn. And if you have an irrigation system, be sure to activate and pressurize your system and check it over for proper functionality, leaks, and needed upgrades.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE? A: Common mistakes always include cutting your lawn too low. For example, most of us around here have Tall Fescue grass, a cool-season grass intended to be tall. You should consistently cut fescue lawns around 4” or longer. Another mistake is putting out weed control at the same time as seeds and fertilizers, which can prohibit proper germination of that new grass. If you have many flowering plants, such as hydrangeas, azaleas, roses, or rhododendrons, wait until the plants have experienced full bloom before you prune; otherwise, you will lose the blooms for that season. Pruning before full blooms also forces the plant to bloom new growth on old wood, exacerbating winter damage if it’s still cold out.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE FOR KEEPING EVERYTHING LUSH AND HEALTHY? A: Consistent lawn cutting allows for less to be cut off each time and a proper height to be maintained. It would be best if you planned to prune shrubs and trees, aerate and seed the lawn, and winterize your irrigation system again in the fall. It is also an ideal time to plant trees, so if you have a large planting project to protect that investment, plant in the fall.
Q: IF A HOMEOWNER ISN’T INTO DIY, WHAT SHOULD THEY CONSIDER WHEN ENGAGING IN A LANDSCAPING SERVICE? A: Communication, follow-up, and accessibility are crucial. Your service must have the communication tools to streamline the customer’s experience. When meeting a client for the first time, we are always surprised to hear a client tell us how hard it was to get someone to answer their phone or show up; It’s also a good idea to go with a full-service provider. For example, we offer landscaping design and installation, tree planting, sod installation, irrigation servicing and installation, and scheduled lawn cutting. That way, our clients don’t have to work with multiple companies. Look to partner with your landscaper by March so you can have access to the proper lawn and landscaping services early. This way, you can add your lawn to the mowing schedule, any lawn applications can be determined and scheduled, and your landscaping needs, such as plantings and enhancements, can be performed before the warmer season starts. That will give you plenty of time to enjoy a lush and beautiful Spring and Summer season. For those who prefer to leave your yard grooming to the professionals, contact John at Lawns for Luke for a quote for his services. facebook.com/lawnsbyluke

ADVERTORIAL
Hi, I’m Mike Steplowski. I am a Branch Manager & Senior Loan Officer with The Steplowski Mortgage Team, powered by Success Mortgage Partners, Inc. here in Mt. Juliet. My job is to help people get a mortgage when they are purchasing a home or want to refinance, and I think my team and I are the best at providing an exceptional mortgage experience. My purpose is to share what I’ve learned about money and credit to help people succeed financially. I’ve made plenty of financial mistakes thoughout my life. As a young adult I had no idea how credit worked, or how to use debt responsibly. I had no clue how to use a monthly budget to manage my spending, and I had spending habits that left me living paycheck to paycheck. Even as I got older and reached some level of success in my professional career, I got the nice house, drove the nice car, I was still making financial mistakes. Despite a six-figure income, I had no real savings, way too much debt, still barely paying my bills each month, and there was rarely anything left over to save. It wasn’t until my mid 30s when a mentor entered my life who taught me how to prepare a budget, save more, and give more. It changed my life and the way I think about money. Each month I’ll share financial lessons here I’ve learned from mentors and other financial professionals, as well as lessons I’ve learned from financial mistakes in my own life. We’ll discuss budgeting, credit, saving and investing, insurance, taxes, and all things money. I hope that you will find this information helpful.
If you are thinking about a home purchase or refinance, or if I can be a resource for you regarding any of these topics, please give me a call.
