I cannot believe we are embarking on our second Holiday Issue with all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, not just my family but our team and all of our creatives behind the work of one issue to the next, we are so grateful for all of you every month who read, find joy and comfort, and inspiration by reading our publication. For if it weren't for you, we would not be here. The messages that have come through regularly these past 18 months have been overwhelming, and we cannot wait to share with you the incredible stories of our community each month. In this issue, we share an inspiring story about a Christian singer-songwriter who has not only accomplished so much in his career but has worked so hard and consistently to bring the greater message to his listeners through his work. Matthew West: Coming Home for

Christmas Multi-Award-Winning Christian artist Matthew West has essentially done it all, and he says he’s just getting started. 16

When Christian Artist Matthew West found out NSAI, Nashville Songwriters Association International, chose him as the SongwriterArtist of the year, he was in disbelief. Being honored with the likes of Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan, as well as being the first predominantly Christian artist to win the award in 20 years, is something he considers to be a ‘mountaintop moment’ on his journey. Part of that journey includes an incredible partnership this holiday season with Candace Cameron Bure, Bill Abbott, and the Great American Family network. His new song, Come Home for Christmas, will be the theme song for eight weeks during the Great American Christmas movie season. “I am so excited to partner with the Great American Family network this holiday season,” West remarks. “I love Christmas music so much, and each year I find myself sitting at the piano penning a new Christmas tune inspired by my love of this most wonderful time of the year. ‘Come Home for Christmas’ is not just a song; it’s an invitation for every heart to return to the wonder, the peace, the love, and the hope that this holiday season offers to every heart. I hope when people tune in to watch their favorite holiday films on the network, this song will serve as a musical reminder of what Christmas is all about.” West is looking forward to another momentous achievement heading into the new year; his first-ever double album, My Story Your Glory, is set for release in February. The First Album, My Story, tells the stories of peoples’ lives and his own story. The Second Album, Your Glory, is a ‘worshipful response to God as a work in the stories of our lives.’ He tells us that the project is about making the most of our lives and remembering who and what we are here for. Not only has West proven himself as an accomplished Christian artist and songwriter, but he’s also recently released his sixth book, The God Who Stays. He says his mom was the one who ‘spoke (his book writing) into existence’ and felt that one day his writing would transcend past songs into penning books. Matthew’s most recent publication is labeled his most personal book to date and was inspired not only by the

Storytelling is at the heart of his journey, so it only seems natural that a podcast involving interviewing guests sharing their stories would be part of it. With over 100 episodes of The Matthew West Podcast in his catalog thus far, he excels in bringing the listener into the moment of the stories he and his guests share weekly. Hosting his podcast has challenged, encouraged, and inspired West. He’s quoted as saying, ‘It’s just another way I hope my platform can be used to let people know their story matters.” You can find new episodes weekly under the ‘That Sounds Fun’ network. It’s clear that West is passionate about helping others; this is evident in the nonprofit popwe, he and his father, pastor Joe West, founded. popwe is a ministry

helping others to ‘craft, share and live a more meaningful life.’ West describes it as ‘helping people after the song or the concert is over.’ Each week, he writes a devotional that the ministry sends out. Mount Juliet Elite Gymnastics is a gym built on culture. Over the last six years, the coaches and staff of Mount Juliet Elite have dedicated themselves to the success and future of their gymnasts. Whether the goal for a gymnast is to perfect their skills, go to college, or go to the Olympics, Elite Gymnastics is serious about what they do and has the staff in place to take their gymnasts as far as they want to go. The dream for Mount Juliet Elite to grow and have a more significant impact on the experience of their gymnasts is now becoming a reality. Amanda and Jeremy Polzel are the founders of The Polzel Group of Benchmark Realty. The Polzels celebrate the spirit of giving every year by participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which supplies children in need with Christmas gifts. Amanda and Jeremy allow each daughter to specifically pick a child their age and choose gifts for them so that they have a chance to bring the gift of Christmas to a peer of theirs less fortunate. The Polzels value the importance of teaching their children the power of giving and thinking of others, especially at Christmas time. One of the Polzels favorite Christmas traditions is searching for the perfect tree. Circle S Farms, established in 1839, a local nine-generation farm, is one of the few local live Christmas tree farms in Wilson County and, most of all, serves as a beautiful backdrop for seasonal photos. The Polzels love to explore different options every year when finding their perfect tree, making the location part of the adventure for their girls. CONTINUED >

How the Polzels pick their perfect tree • First, it has to have a full bottom that tappers perfectly as it goes to the top; Amanda and Jeremy prefer Douglas Fir. • Make sure if you’re purchasing from a local tree lot that the tree still has a lot of life left.(grab a branch and pull on it ever so slightly, if a lot of needles fall off, you might want to keep looking) • Pick a tree with plenty of room for decorations. The Polzels daughters get to have creative freedom when decorating the tree. So, sturdy branches are a must! • The smell, if you crush the needles a bit in your hand and it releases that beautiful Christmas smell, she’s a keeper. • Pick a tree that brings you joy. As soon as you see it, you get that warm fuzzy feeling. There is nothing better than that warm Christmas tree glow.

Food banks are often the lifeline of a community. Thankfully, some incredible organizations and volunteers in our community are eager to help.

The “Home of the Big Yellow Wheelbarrow” assists more than 600 families per month, the most they’ve ever served in 23 years of operating. This equates to over $100,000 in food, toiletries, and household items. Supplies have been limited due to increased demand, but they continue to support the elderly, disabled, and single-parent families. Volunteers keep costs low while monetary support goes towards transportation costs and utilities for freezers and coolers.

This local 501(c)3 interacts with more residents than any other agency in the county. Last year, they provided over 18,000 meals and almost 40,000 items of clothing. Thanks to generous donors, they can also meet urgent utility needs of over $50,000. Services have now expanded to include prescription assistance for the elderly and Ensure supplementation for those battling cancer.

SALT is a non-profit organization that began in 2014 after learning that many seniors frequently must choose between food, medicine, and utilities. Transportation is also a concern that limits access to these necessities. SALT became the solution and delivers food twice per month to over 190 households. Volunteers on delivery teams get the added bonus of chatting with the lovely seniors on their route.

Friendship Community Church is a “client choice” food bank meaning those in need can freely select the types of food items their family will enjoy. Resources are not limited based on zip code and are open to anyone with insufficient food availability. CRAFTING A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN MOUNT JULIET

KATHY STOVER, MULTI-BUSINESS OWNER Kathy Stover, owner of Dragonfly Consignment and Hammer & Stain on N Mount Juliet Rd, has overcome obstacles in her two-and-a-half years as a small business owner. For Kathy, obstacles were stepping stones to her dreams. Kathy followed her children and their growing families to the Nashville area and settled in Mount Juliet. As she was ready to launch a new business, something different from her previous forensic accountant occupation, her sister-in-law sent her a link to a place called Hammer & Stain. Kathy immediately knew this was “it.” Between crafting and school plays, she knew this touched areas close to her heart and passion. Opening a new small business is never easy, but doing it in March 2020 created the perfect storm. She weathered overcoming a tornado, a global pandemic, and a devastating flood that completely totaled her shop. While looking for a new space after the flood, she fell in love with her current location connected to Dragonfly Consignment, which coincidentally was closing. She decided to take a chance, and instead of letting the repeat hits keep her down, she leaned into them and continued to grow her business, taking over the consignment business and joining the two together.

At Hammer & Stain, she runs a homeschool group several days a week, an after-school program, and a summer camp. They do projects such as ceramics, mosaics, sand art, painting, sequin art, and spin art; there is even a splatter room for more fun! Perfect for a birthday party or girls’ holiday party get-together. Hammer & Stain is open for walk-ins on Tuesday - Saturday, 10-5. You can stop in on one of these days and do a project, book a private party or join one already scheduled on the website. Prepping for the Holiday Road Trip

Your car, and your family, will appreciate a little attention before hitting the road

Thoughts of a holiday road trip can send one’s senses racing in so many ways. Fond memories of previous journeys and giddy anticipation for the one ahead are top of mind. You’re likely already hearing or humming the melodies of classic Christmas carols. But nothing can spoil the occasion faster than being stuck on the side of the road in a broken-down vehicle. So, before loading your sleigh, make sure it’s roadworthy. With that in mind, we turned to Mark Fulks of Mark’s Automotive in Mount Juliet. Here are some of his tips and advice to ensure your vehicle is up to the task. First things first: An oil change is the best place to start. “Oil changes allow us to examine all your vehicle’s systems. We’ll top-off fluids and inspect belts, brakes, and hoses. We can check your battery and engine coolant, and in most cases, things that need immediate attention can be repaired that day. We can also alert you to certain maintenance and service needs you’re likely to encounter by the next oil change. Best of all, you’ll know that your vehicle is ready for the trip.”

“If you only have a couple months of tread remaining, you should seriously consider a new set of tires. It’s just not worth the risk. Tires need to be at their best during the winter months. It’s also the right time to have your tires rotated and to make sure they’re inflated and aligned properly. And don’t neglect the spare tire. In the event of an emergency, it needs to be ready.”

“Before the trip, pull out the jack and learn where it positions on the car in the event you have to change a tire. It’s best to learn in the driveway than on the side of the road. Learn how to use jumper cables, or a portable booster is even better. Just make sure it’s charged before you go. A basic tool set could prove to be invaluable. It should include flat head and Philips head screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, sockets and ratchets and a tire pressure gauge.

“It’s smart to have an extra quart of oil, a gallon of water or coolant, and reflective flares, just in case. Remember, if your radiator is about to overheat, let it cool off a bit before removing the cap. It’s under pressure so removing it too soon could result in an injury. If you have room, I recommend an air compressor. It’ll plug directly into one of your vehicle’s power outlets. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
