EXPLORE + ADVENTURE The thrill of exploration started for me as a kid in small outdoor adventures. We had a wooded area behind our backyard that kept me entertained for hours investigating the perimeter. I loved examining pinecones, curly ferns that unfurled into a shady canopy, velvety moss, and collecting rocks that had to be fished out of my pockets before the laundry. I was allowed to ride my bike back and forth on the street between the Gates’ house and the Grief’s house. One summer the neighborhood kids took me to the start of a dirt trail through the woods. The path started behind the Grief’s house, so technically I was still in bounds. We rode our bikes single file through the thick pine trees, my first time off the road. As summer days went by, we ventured further and further into the woods, but often became scared we would get lost, and turned back. One girl was convinced the woods were haunted by the ghost of a girl named Miranda. A boy believed there was buried treasure at the end. Over the summer we grew more confident. We memorized all the different trail branches and marked some with stones. Eventually we took the path all the way to the end, which was a KOA Campground. We were all so excited and amazed, you would have thought we discovered a new country! As an adult I mapped the driving directions from my childhood home to the KOA. It’s 7 miles one way! You need to understand, I’m GenX, nobody was looking for me until dinner time. I’ll cherish those memories forever. A Pioneering Spirit The Story of Christian Clemens, Founder of Mount Clemens ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR

Exploring is baked into the very soul of Mount Clemens. While today it is fun to visit the restaurants, bars, and other attractions downtown, and in years past the Clem was a favorite destination of celebrities seeking the benefits of its mineral baths, Mount Clemens owes its existence to the pioneering spirit of one man, Christian Clemens. Christian Clemens was born in Pennsylvania on January 30, 1768, the son of a Mennonite farmer. His mother spoke only German. One of 13 children, he grew up working on the family homestead until he was 27. It was then the urge to explore beyond the world he had known took hold. In 1795, he came to Detroit with a surveying party led by Lewis Cass, and three years later

made the most important decision of his life—moving north to the Clinton River. On March 18, 1800, he purchased a distillery which had been built a couple years earlier—the first building in what would become Mount Clemens, the city that bears his name. Clemens continued to purchase land in the area, including a place for his home on what is today Gratiot Avenue. In either 1802 or 1803, he married Elizabeth Allen. Elizabeth was a widow with two children—her husband, a physician from Detroit, had disappeared a year or so earlier. By 1806, the Clemenses had started a school in their home for area children. By 1818, a total of 15 families lived nearby and the settlement was named Mount Clemens. CONTINUED >

While imprisoned in Fort Detroit Clemens often scaled the walls to visit his wife and children in town before returning to captivity.

Judge Clemens’ home served as the first school, church, and court. In a log home similar to this, it was open to travelers and the site of many dances.

Clemens donated land to each religious denomination, specifying the site would be used for a church.

Clemens, who served as a colonel in the local militia, Chief Justice of the County Court, and Judge of Probate, continued to grow Mount Clemens over the years. He donated land to the county to build the first courthouse—a log building constructed in 1818, after he was appointed to the position of judge by Lewis Cass, then governor of Michigan Territory. Clemens also gave land to build the first churches and cemetery in the area. He started several businesses, including a fur trading post and a tannery. He helped build a stagecoach line to Detroit. Christian Clemens was even one of the first trustees of the University of Michigan. Perhaps the most interesting period of Christian Clemens’ life was during the War of 1812. At the time, according to the Eldridge County History, Mount Clemens (then called High Banks), was “an unbroken forest” with a handful of log buildings, connected by a rough dirt road. When hostilities with the British intensified, many High Banks settlers moved to Fort Detroit. The fort held out against the British for a few weeks before it surrendered. The rest of the militia was allowed to return home, but Christian Clemens was captured by British forces. Imprisoned in the fort, it would be easy to assume that Clemens lived the typical life of a prisoner of war. Surprisingly, he befriended his captors, particularly two of the officers. He was allowed to roam the garrison and was even accompanied by a British lieutenant on trips outside the fort. On a number of occasions, Clemens even scaled the walls of the stockade to visit his family before returning to captivity. One time, Christian Clemens was found by British officers at home spending a quiet evening with his wife and children, smoking his pipe. He was quickly returned, the story goes, “without affording him any time to snatch his cap.” Mount Clemens has changed a lot in the 225 years since Christian Clemens first arrived—the stagecoach line replaced by busy roads. Most importantly, his pioneering spirit lives on in every person who decides to open a new business, renovate a historic home, or just do their part to make this city a great place to be.

Escape Sometimes, you just want to escape—try something new, liven things up, put a little excitement in your life. Now you can, says Jim DiFalco, owner of the newly opened Escapology location right here in Mount Clemens at 82 Macomb Place. Escapology is the world’s fastest growing chain of themed escape rooms, and Jim’s location is the first in the area. Jim and his family love escape games and have played them all over the country. “We’ve always enjoyed them,” says Jim. “Having been an insurance agency owner for several years, with my agency located here in downtown Mount Clemens, I was inspired to start another business with a more entertainment-based feel and I knew Mount Clemens would be the perfect spot. With our love for escape games and Mount Clemens, it was the perfect fit!” A night at Escapology is a perfect choice after spending an evening downtown, says Jim. “There are so many terrific restaurants and bars within walking distance. feather bowling, shuffleboard, and billiards at multiple local venues. Since our games only take an hour, you can easily fit them into a day or night of fun here in town!” At Escapology, Jim and his team offer a variety of experiences. Escapology has high-quality game designs and unique licensing agreements, says Jim. For those new to escape rooms, Jim suggests thinking of it as an “experience that combines the feeling of watching a movie and playing a game. You step into a story and are given a plot and one hour to solve your way to the solution.” For those who have played escape games before, Jim says “expect our games to be some of the best you’ve ever played!” At present, Escapology offers two games, Scooby Doo and the Spooky Castle and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Over the next 12-24 months, Jim expects to add six more games to keep things fresh, including a seasonal game for the holidays. In 2024, Escapology will add A Pirate’s Curse and Batman: A Dark Knight’s Challenge, which according to Jim, will be one of their most advanced and creative games yet. “When you walk in, you are instantly transported elsewhere with our incredible steampunk décor lobby,” says Jim. “People have been blown away by the level of detail.” Once in the rooms, Jim compares what you will find to the feeling you get at Disney World or Universal Studios. Jim assures newcomers that they can add more clues and hints to help if you need it, while experienced guests can try to beat their best time. For families, Jim stresses that the games can be spooky, but not scary, and are recommended for ages 8 and up. Jim is planning some special packages soon, such as “Explore the Clem” and “Date Night”, with deals in combination with other local businesses. Looking to explore? Eager to try something new? The Michigan Activity Pass can be your ticket to adventure right in your backyard, a short drive away, or all the way across the state. Through your local library, you can check out the Michigan Activity Pass and obtain free or discounted access to museums, state parks, and many other attractions around Michigan. According to Brandon Bowman, Director of the Mount Clemens Public Library, the pass is a great way to explore our home, Mount Clemens. The pass is your ticket to “admission to our own hometown Anton Art Center and Crocker House Museum,” says Brandon. Also around town, the Michigan Transit Museum participates with Michigan Activity Pass. Want to explore the rest of Macomb County? The Michigan Activity Pass is valid at a number of other locations in the area. Spend a day at the Selfridge Military Air Museum in Harrison Township or the Albert Lorenzo Cultural Center in Clinton Township, to name a few. Heading a bit further afield to Oakland County, enjoy the architecture of Meadowbrook Hall in Rochester, or spend at day at LEGOLAND Discovery Center (the pass gives $7 off admission prices) or the Sealife Aquarium in Auburn Hills. Love art? Bring the pass to the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills. Elsewhere in Metro Detroit, the Michigan Activity Pass is valid at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit, the Yankee Air Museum in Belleville, the Michigan Philharmonic in Plymouth and many other museums, farms, children’s activities, and more. You can use the Michigan Activity Pass for your weekend getaways as well. The pass is accepted at

the USS Silversides Submarine Museum in Muskegon, the Midwest Miniatures Museum in Grand Haven, the Flint Children’s Museum, and the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing, among others. The pass is helpful for outdoor adventures too. Says Brandon, “I've used it many times over the past few years to get spots at state parks for camping.” In addition to Michigan’s many state parks, the Michigan Activity Pass is also valid at the HuronClinton Metroparks. Treat yourself to a day close to home at Lake St. Clair Metropark, or try another of the park system’s 13 offerings in the area to swim, hike, and play. Brandon emphasizes that obtaining the pass is easy. One pass can be checked out per library card and is valid for seven days. Patrons can visit michiganactivitypass.info to browse available passes and check them out. Options can be searched by distance from your home or refine by the type of adventure you are interested in. Once a pass is requested, simply print it out. A new option, for those who prefer not to print, is the virtual pass. This is exciting, adds Brandon, because “you can take your tickets on your phone with you instead of having to print them out. No more worrying about locating your lost paper tickets!” To use the virtual pass, be sure to set an email reminder for your pass on the reservation system. Of course, you can find out more about the Michigan Activity Pass online, but at last you can also ask at the library! The Mount Clemens Public Library, says Brandon, located on Cass Avenue, reopened on February 21. Whether you want to explore area attractions or the library itself, Brandon and his team are waiting to welcome you back.
