February is one of my favorite winter months. The hustle and bustle of the holidays is behind us – whew! It’s a great time to rest. I love days spent burrowing under soft blankets with hot cocoa watching snow falling gently into drifts. Looking out the window I’m grateful my garden is sleeping for the season, a small respite from yardwork. Contentment sets in when my home smells like maple syrup, favorite movies are on, with various books and magazines scattered about. Time to hibernate. However, I’m sure you can relate that too many consecutive gray, sunless days bring on the restlessness of “cabin fever.” Fortunately, there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy. I look forward to trekking around downtown with friends at the Fire & Ice Chili Cook-Off and Ice Carving Show. There are new recipes to try for the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day. And the month wraps up with Paczki Day. Those little raspberry and custard filled donuts make winter worth living through! The theme of the February issue is “Love Local,” highlighting what’s to love in our community. We showcase local artisans who pour their passion into handcrafted products you can share with that special someone. And speaking of special someone, remember that self-love is self-care! Melissa Lavender Is Baking With Love

Since she was about 15 years old, Melissa Lavender had a dream to own a small café or business. “Throughout my life I thought about it,” says Melissa, “but the time was never right. And honestly, the biggest thing was I never believed I could.” As the years went by, Melissa worked for various places and ran a cake business out of her home. “My house became the neighborhood spot for cake, cupcake, or cookie decorating for my children and their friends. My kids were surrounded by sprinkles and sweets for all occasions. I enjoyed creating and feeling free to take on whatever jobs I could to stretch my artistic limits,” she adds. In August of 2017, Melissa’s family decided to make a dramatic change. “We moved to Mount Clemens,” says Melissa. “We loved the potential of the downtown and the community feel.” Over the next few years, more changes were in store for Melissa and her family. “In 2018 my mom passed away, in 2019 I quit a job that I loved because of a toxic boss and negative work environment, and then spring forward to Covid.” After all of this, Melissa knew something had to change.

“I was at home collecting unemployment and now suddenly I was figuring out ways to better myself and grow as an individual rather than a spouse and mom for the first time in my life,” Melissa says. She found herself journaling, listening to podcasts, meditating, painting, and traveling. “Suddenly I started to see a freedom in losing the layers of crap that had come before.” In late 2020, Melissa’s husband David gave her a nudge to revisit her old dream. “He said you need to open your own business. He began looking at spaces downtown and basically forcing me to believe I could do it.” With her efforts at bettering herself in mind, Melissa decided to take the plunge and make her dream come true. “We signed the lease in January 2021,” she says. “Through the planning phrase I worked really hard on myself and poured my heart and soul into every square inch of that space to make Clementine’s as special as possible. It truly is an extension of myself and my second home. I love every crazy and beautiful minute of it all,” adds Melissa. “Next to giving

birth to my children, this is my proudest accomplishment thus far.” Speaking of children, Melissa and David are a tight-knit family of four with two children—Vega, age 21, and Vincent, age 18. Avid campers, the family enjoys traveling. Melissa and David recently visited Alaska and have only Hawaii left to see to complete all 50 states. They have plans to visit Hawaii this year to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. When not out seeing the world with her family, you can find Melissa hard at work at Clementine’s Pastries, which recently celebrated its first year in business at 57 Macomb Place in downtown Mount Clemens. Since the shop is Melissa’s home away from home, she and her husband enjoy spending time there and even having a dessert/date night. When stopping in to fuel your own romantic evening or sweet escape, Melissa suggests some of Clementine’s most popular items, including cinnamon rolls, cream puffs, and cannoli. “All are deliciously made every day,” she adds. Anything chocolate tends to have a romantic feel, notes Melissa, “and we have four select macaron flavors that rotate monthly.” Melissa loves being in downtown Mount Clemens, especially in the kitchen watching the world go by living the dream she finally made come true. “So many great people visit the city each day and I’m so happy to be a small part of it.” Find out more about Clementine’s Pastries at clementinespastries.com.

Love Your Career FIND NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN EV WITH MICHIGAN WORKS!

More and more electric vehicles are making their presence known, from new models appearing on the roads to additional places to charge them. Our area has been home to motor vehicle manufacturing for as long as cars have been on the road, but change can be difficult for those who have spent their careers working in traditional automotive manufacturing. Help is available, says Justin Al-Igoe, Executive Director of Michigan Works! Macomb/St. Clair Workforce Development Board. Michigan Works! is the first statewide, unified workforce development system in the country. As the automotive industry moves toward electric vehicles, says Justin, making the switch from traditional to electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing will depend on the job a person currently holds. “For example,” continues Justin, “engineers may require more in-depth, technical training while others may just need hands-on, on-the-job training for this change.” Such training may take the form of new certifications, such as those that have recently or are

currently being developed in fields such as battery technician. Justin expects such certifications and training will become more common as the switch to EV continues. Sometimes employers will pay for apprenticeships, and certifications can be as short as a semester course in some situations. Of course, the move toward EV is not limited to job opportunities in automotive manufacturing, sales, and service. In addition to the types of jobs for machinists, customer service representatives, and technicians that will be needed, wider adoption of EV will necessitate growth in some surprising fields. “Additional career growth in areas like electricians, engineers, and even urban planners is expected. Construction is also expected to grow as the EV infrastructure, such as public charging stations for example, develops,” notes Justin. Women, as well as men, can find many career opportunities with the changes that electric vehicles are bringing to our area. For those interested in preparing for a career in EV, Justin says that Michigan Works! can help. “Michigan Works! is partnering with the State of Michigan and the Workforce Intelligence Network to acquire training funds to help with the transition. We are training our Career Planners on this emerging field so they can provide guidance on the careers, projections, and training opportunities in this area.” Michigan Works! Career Planners can be a great resource for career-changers and job-seekers in EV-related fields. When getting started, Justin suggests coming to speak with a Career Planner, or start with your own research into the field. “Our staff can provide further guidance and information, as well as point to employers in this field. Changing career fields will take time, energy, and work so people interested in preparing for the EV field should be ready for this,” adds Justin. Whether you are eager to join the EV field, or any field, Justin stresses that Michigan Works! is a great place to start searching for a career you will love, and not just a job. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY

ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

BAG & SHOE STOR AGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.

08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

Chop six ounces of semisweet chocolate, then transfer it and the butter to a pot; heat on low. Stir chocolate and butter until smooth. Whisk two eggs and two yolks with a pinch of salt, then add 1/4 cup of sugar and mix in a stand mixer until it has a light yellow color and becomes thicker in texture. Fold in the chocolate. Add flour

and mix in. Transfer the batter to buttered and floured ramekins. Bake at 450°F for six to eight minutes. Baking time will depend on the size of the ramekins you use. Let them sit for a minute before transferring them to a dessert plate. Sift with powdered sugar and add fruit or whipped cream. Recipe makes six cakes. + 1/2 cup salted butter + 6 oz. bittersweet chocolate + 2 eggs + 2 egg yolks + 1/4 cup sugar + 1 pinch salt + 2 tbsp flour
