I grew up in a small, touristy town in northern Michigan among the pine trees and dirt trails. After college, I moved to Chicago to experience “big city life.” I soaked in the city lights, sounds, culture, and arts. I rode the 'L' train to work and the bus to the beach. I was a city girl in every sense of the word, but an ever-growing part of me missed family, friends, and that sense of small-town community roots. Eventually, I moved back to Michigan and found a perfect combination of city, waterfront, and small-town charm: Mount Clemens. Here I found 19th century brick facades across from modern glass buildings. Fresh paint and Edison bulbs. The fast pulse of the traffic on Gratiot and the slow current of the river winding through the high banks. And everywhere beautiful steeples dotting the skyline. Vintage vibe – vibrant vision. The best aspects of our history combine with the momentum of a renaissance, creating a new, and prosperous future for Mount Clemens! Our magazine will highlight the most positive aspects of living and playing here. Sometimes life comes full circle. Such is the case with the Anton Art Center’s executive director Phil Gilchrist, who first entered the center’s doors as a young boy heading to an art class. “I grew up a couple of blocks from the art center, so I visited often. It inspired a love of art and creativity in me. In one of the classes, I created a wall hanging which I still have and that hangs in my office at the center,” he said. Gilchrist began working with the Anton Art Center as a grant coordinator in 2009 and assumed his current role as executive director in October 2015. A nearly life-long resident of Mount Clemens, Gilchrist is passionate about making a difference in his community through the arts. Via his work at the center, he focuses on creating opportunities for people throughout Macomb County to experience art and its benefits firsthand. He also works with center staff to support art education and the role that arts play in different cultures and communities. “When I began my role as executive director, it really felt like life had come full circle, and I am using this role to help impact others within the community,” he said. The Anton Art Center was first established in the historic Carnegie Library Building, with art classes being offered in the basement. The first exhibit at the center, loaned to the center by the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1970, was titled “Mother and Child.” Now in its 53rd year, the Anton Art Center – named after Gebran S. and Suzanne P. Anton, whose support allowed the center to expand via a $1.7 million renovation and addition in 2007 – has become the largest and longest-standing visual arts and exhibiting organization in Macomb County. The center has two primary galleries for exhibiting artists, with 20 to 24 rotating exhibits each
year. In addition, classes are offered for all ages and artistic mediums, with ceramics being especially popular. “We often have a waiting list for some classes. I think the movie ‘Ghost’ romanticized ceramics. But also it is an artistic medium that is popular because it is tangible. You take a pile of dirt, essentially, and create something beautiful from it,” he said. “It is not as easy as it looks and there is a mysterious aspect to how to become good at it.” Instructors at the center are local artists sharing their craft. Art teachers offer programs in ceramics; loom weaving; acrylic; oil and watercolor painting; wire-wrapping jewelry; mosaics; mixed media; acrylic flow; and resin pouring. The classes and workshops are for students of all experience levels and ages so that they may get creative in a safe and welcoming space, Gilchrist said. In all, Gilchrist said the center’s programs bring art experiences to thousands of people each year and help over 150 local artists annually earn income from their work at exhibits and events. In addition, bringing art outward to the community is a center priority. This is done through classes and summer art programs that provide access to the arts to students, minorities, senior citizens, and the impoverished. “Over the years our programming has expanded to include public art projects, musical performances, offsite engagements, and greater outreach to partner organizations in the area to increase arts access, and the advocacy of art and artists across the region,” Gilchrist said. These projects include murals in downtown Mount Clemens, art enrichment in Mount Clemens Schools, and participation in a variety of public festivals. The Anton Art Center also launched the IDEA Council, an advisory body to the center’s board and staff. The purpose of the council is to

“explore areas for improvement and learn specifically from people of color how we can be more inclusive, support diversity in our community, work toward equity in our programs and operations, and increase access to the arts for all.” “We need to ask ourselves ‘how do we become more attuned to the needs of our entire community?’ ” Gilchrist said. This fall, the IDEA Council’s first project – a partnership of artist Jay Hero and poet jessica Care moore – was installed on the exterior of the Anton Art Center facility. Its design serves as a platform to discuss and highlight the underrepresentation of Black artists and communities in the arts, Gilchrist said. The nonprofit center’s nearly half-million dollar budget is funded through class tuition, donors, grants, and fundraising events like the recent Art Party in September. Fulfilling the center’s mission is key to Gilchrist’s mindset, which focuses on bringing to others the same inspiration he found as a child taking classes at Anton. “We have a part to play outside of our walls and within our communities to engage the public in conversations about art, and to make sure access to art and the opportunities for expression are available to all.”

Built in 1900, recently renovated for executives and business seeking a downtown vibe.
VINTAGE VIBE, VIBRANT VISION For over a century, Mount Clemens, Michigan - a quaint & lovely town situated on the high banks of the Clinton River was a world-famous destination thanks to the ancient healing properties found in its water. Just a stone’s throw from Lake St. Clair, and halfway in between two Great Lakes, there’s an inherent mixture of salt and other minerals found in the water. This brine ultimately proved difficult to separate, yet therapeutic - and profitable - to bathe in. The very first commercial

bathhouse opened in 1873, sparking an industry that would earn nearly $3 million annually. At its height, there was nearly a dozen bathhouses, and two dozen hotels in town supporting this popular industry. The likes of Clark Cable, William Randolph Hearst, and the legendary Babe Ruth himself would frequently visit Mount Clemens to bathe in the therapeutic water. Much like the rest of the towns in The Mitten, Mount Clemens found itself going through hard times after the post-World

War II economic boom waned. The mineral bathhouse industry declined until the 1970’s, eventually going under, and leaving Mount Clemens in search of a new identity. Fast forward, and thanks to the hard work for some visionaries and movers-and-shakers, the town has found itself in a true Renaissance. Headed by the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority, and overseen by Mayor Laura Kropp, city center is expanding at a rapid pace with new businesses seeking the downtown vibe. When the former City Commissioner overtook the role of Mayor in November 2019, around 60 percent of downtown had vacancy. Thirty-six months - and even through a major pandemic later - that number is now down to 35 percent.
Taking a walk downtown, you can simply see the transformation of the county seat. Trees along the sidewalk are glowing with new white lights all year round. Several buildings, some that have been dark for years, had developers breathe in new life. Structural improvements, fresh paint, gorgeous crystal chandeliers or vintage Edison bulbs shining through the windows is capturing everyone’s attention. These impressive new retail fronts make one think, hey westside, the eastside is coming for you! While Mount Clemens always had a robust nightlife, new businesses such as Black Cat Coffee and Clementines Pastries are bringing in a whole new crowd during the day, especially on the weekend to eat, shop, and explore. It’s becoming a hot spot for brunch. People are having

fun taking photos with the art murals or taking videos playing the musical instrument art in the Cherry Street mall to post on social media. Beyond adding new businesses and experiential art, the DDA created a robust year-round event calendar. This summer they brought back the River Sight & Sound Concert Series, as well as the Uptown Friday Night Concerts on the Fountain Stage. Residents packed wagons with expandable chairs and walked downtown to relish a warm summer night with music. Crowds enjoyed the new Oasis Social District where they could sip while exploring the area. This winter there are plenty of ways explore everything Mount Clemens has to offer

Stepping into Chaos Studio Salon in Mount Clemens, you know immediately that it is not just your run-ofthe-mill place to get your hair done. And that’s the goal of owner Jenn Magri who wants to ensure that the experience guests have is one of a kind. “Our sole mission is to provide self-care services to make every guest feel their absolute best. We are your home away from home,” said Magri. “We want Chaos to be everyone’s safe and happy place.” “We’re a sisterhood of empowered women who support each other every day. We don’t just do hair, we’re professional day-makers. We’re all about lifting each other up; when you come here, you’re part of the Chaos Girl Gang.” Chaos first opened in 2005 on New Street and then in 2012, Chaos moved to its current location at 116 Macomb Place. The new space – renovated by Magri and her father Mike Maxwell – boasts twice the square footage on three levels. Magri said they focused on keeping the unique historic architecture of the building including twelve-foot ceilings and original molding, in order to create a welcoming, warm space for clients. “We want to be a place where people don’t feel the need to get dressed up to be pampered. A judgment-free zone,” Magri said. The salon is 100 percent woman-owned and operated, and the long-time staff of stylists fall into one of three categories: senior, master or expert based on experience, reputation and demand. Self-care is an important feature of our salon services. A popular trend this year is balayage, which is a highlighting technique where the hair colorist hand-paints color directly onto the hair, creating a more natural, blended, sun-kissed color. For men – who make up about 30 percent of the salon’s guests – the trend is longer hairstyles that are kept neat and trimmed. But the heartfelt aspect of Chaos Salon that will never go out of style is Magri’s and the Girl Gang’s dedication to giving each guest the highest quality – most welcoming – experience possible. BLACK CAT PURR-FECTS MOUNT CLEMENS COFFEE HOUSE SCENE Far from a beverage size, “grande” at 55 Macomb Place in Mount Clemens would most likely be used to sum up scale or the feeling of taking it all in as you enter environs re-imaging the late 1920s and early ‘30s. The Art Deco of it all with a high, high tin ceiling that gleams like a giant silver serving tray, tear-dropped sparkling chandeliers and (Waldorf? Gatsby?) scarlett, geometric patterned wallpaper of the jazz era. Add in hardwood floors, marble tops, overstuffed kick-back areas to sit and sip, a giant wood table big enough for meetings or get-togethers. In fact, all said, the Black Cat’s interior design seems to evoke the 1931-built Macomb County Building over on nearby Gratiot Avenue, known nationally as a 12-story study in Art Deco. Then there’s the Black Cat himself. Right in the middle of the cafe, his image displayed prominently above the fireplace and the place’s pièce de résistance – a cat-on-the-city-prowl portrait of one of the most dapper felines ever to pose for a painting. There’s no accident about its stature, says owner John Hanna. The cat is concentric to what, he says, this spot, this town and this community is all about. “A black cat is one that finds its own way, has its own energy, is without pretension and stands on its own. That’s our town and its people. Black cats are not fancy but they are one hundred percent badass just like Mount Clemens,” he says. “We have made our own way here. I believe this is a great community, with a great help-each-other-spirit that cannot be beat.”

So, the Black Cat has its aesthetic vibe down and it’s making for a lot of happy regulars and pleasantly surprised newcomers. But regulars at a coffee place want coffee -- and everything that coffee can be turned into or mixed with drinkwise. No problem. Grande doesn’t just mean big, it can also mean great. The homegrown drinks here are nothing short of amazing. Top drawer nitro cold brews, each named after wild jungle cats; traditional expressos, all the standards like latte, flavored latte and chai latte giving way (maybe as the sun starts to go down?) to dirty chai, mocha, coconut mocha. You get it. And super signature drinks with once productive people turning into Lavender Latte junkies (double espresso, dairy milk, lavender syrup) or trying to cope with a Pumpkin Praline Latte addiction (double espresso, dairy milk, brown sugar, cinnamon syrup, pumpkin, and cinnamon). While still others are wondering how they are going to be kept down on the farm once they’ve tried a Spicy Cougar (double espresso, dairy milk, Ghirardelli dark chocolate, house-made cinnamon-cayenne syrup, cinnamon). Coffee drinks not your cup of tea? How about tea then? There are black teas, oolong teas, green teas, specialty teas, iced teas, and then some. In describing his drinks Hanna once again makes it sound as unique as a cat wearing city lifestyle treads or as caring as the community the Black Cat is situated in. “We take great attention to homegrown detail. For one example, we have sent our water out to develop a water filtration system based on the analysis. Our products are hand-crafted,” Hanna says. Perfect. In its heyday, Art Deco underscored an America that was as genuine and hard-working as it was smart and on the move. Perhaps, though, you are hungry for more than progress and ingenuity? Black Cat Coffee also has some really good eats, with tasty sandwich wraps, fresh pastries and a great Maurice salad! Finally, we can get grande stretched to mean bighearted. The very much feel-good and la mia casa è la tua casa (my house is your house) at the Black Cat comes from the excellent, knowledgeable, and helpful staff. Just good everyday people with lots of heart, adds Hanna. For visitors, it probably seems like it would be a blast to work here, and that’s good, right? Black Cat Coffee.
