A Fresh New Year!

January 2023 PUBLISHER S

Ana Meyer | ana.meyer@citylifestyle.com John Meyer | john.meyer@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

Our Health & Wellness Issue For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional, dental and financial health. This year we look forward to being the best version of ourselves that we can be, including being great parents, family and community members and friends. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation and work to establish more regular rest in your work week. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! Happy New Year!

Managing health issues through specialized physical therapy

At different stages of our lives, women and men can experience a host of physical issues. What many of us don’t know is how much pelvic health can influence overall health and wellness. “Whether they’re having pain in their pelvis, back, or hips, or are having urinary or bowel symptoms or sexual issues, we can make sure that the pelvic floor is supported and that they’re on a good exercise program that supports them during different stages of their lives,” says Stacey Futterman Tauriello, a physical therapist and founder of 5 POINT Physical Therapy and Wellness LLC in Millburn and New York City. She and her team of physical therapists, Stephanie White and Jennifer Lynch, as well as acupuncturist, Leah Kim, work together to help clients live better lives by improving the strength and balance of the pelvis. Educating people is also a big component of the practice. “Poor bladder habits usually start in childhood,” says Stacey. “We were often told to go before we leave the house ‘just in case.’ You should be able to hold urination for three hours, and one of the goals with pelvic health is nipping future problems in the bud.” Another issue for young women is painful periods and endometriosis; these can also relate to pelvic health.

12

O PE N H OU SE | FITNESS

“The support of a pelvic floor specialist during these times is so important because we can actually make sure that the pelvis is balanced and that the pelvic floor is kept at a nice neutral stance where it’s not overutilized.” Stress, says Stacey, can increase urgency and frequency, as can drinking things that can irritate our bladders like diet soda and beer. “The healthiest thing to drink is water and if you want to add a little fruit or a little cucumber, that’s great.” Her practice handles a lot of pregnancy and postpartum issues. “We believe that all pregnant women should have at least one visit with a pelvic health specialist to teach them body mechanics and posture, and make sure their pelvic floor is good for pushing,” she says. “We also make sure they understand what can happen postpartum.” For women in their 40s and 50s, hormones start changing. Being able to understand their bodies and being able to exercise correctly and efficiently is important. “Women should start talking about any related issues with their healthcare providers in order to be proactive in keeping their bodies in a nice equilibrium,” says Stacey. 1 2.

Physical therapists who specialize in pelvic health focus on things like urinary incontinence, frequency and urgency anything related to the bladder, plus anything related to the bowel, including bowel dysfunction, and pain during physical intimacy, prenatal and postpartum issues, and pre-and post-menopausal symptoms.

2 Don’t assume that any discomfort or issues you’re experiencing is part of the natural aging process or due to the aftereffects of childbirth. There are many things that can be done at all stages of your life to either get rid of or alleviate these symptoms.

3 3.

If you’re pregnant, it’s a good idea to see a pelvic specialist before giving birth to prepare your body for an optimal experience. You’ll also learn what issues may arise afterward and how pelvic exercises can help with those.

4 For healthy bladder habits, avoid certain foods that might irritate the bladder such as beer, diet soda and anything containing artificial sweeteners. Drink water whenever possible, and if you don’t like it plain, add fruits and other healthy, natural flavor infusions. See the article is this issue for some great recipes. 4. LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!

T R E N D SE T T E R | L IFE + CULTURE

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Healthy Hair Care is on Trend

Natural solutions for beautiful looks ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY With the popularity of organic and natural products, many consumers are looking for alternatives to hair products containing chemicals such as parabens and sulfates. Some people go the very natural route, using avocado, honey and chamomile on their hair, while others prefer to buy items that are less messy and formulated to provide hair with multiple benefits. At Trendz Color & Design Salon in Florham Park, you can find a whole line of natural products. “People want beautiful hair, but they also want to avoid putting chemicals in their hair while also protecting the planet,” says owner, Raul Grippaldi. “People are looking to live greener lifestyles.” Without sulfate, shampoos don’t have that foamy lather that some people prefer; however, shampoo doesn’t have to have a thick lather to clean well. Trendz products contain natural ingredients such as “Pinot Noir” grape seeds, which help protect hair cells against damage from environmental influences. “We use it for lasting and permanent protection of sensitive hair cells,” he says.

24

H AP PY H OU R | BEAU TY

The ingredient, Solamer GR8, provides innovative color protection by blocking UV-A and UV-B radiation. Another product contains keratin and provides hair repair using a mix of amino acids and proteins that mimic those of hair. Other natural ingredients include biotin, argan oil, and black oats. These oats are responsible for the build-up and regulation of hair cells. “It works against frizzing of the hair, prevents premature hair loss and makes brittle hair elastic,” says Raul. In the case of hair loss, either from illness, genetics or other factors, Trendz also offers high-quality extensions and wigs. “We provide natural hair extensions for women looking to add volume and length,” he says. “With older women, it’s usually because they’re losing hair, but with younger women, it’s usually because they want longer hair. We have younger girls coming in that have very thin, shorter hair, so we add extensions for a longer and fuller look.” Raul explains that it’s very important to have someone who is highly trained not only put in the extensions but also remove them. “You must be certified to use them or even to buy them because extensions can really ruin your hair if not done right,” he says. “A lot of extensions use glue, wax and heat to bond them into your natural hair. With Great Lengths, the product we

use, that bonding is done using keratin, a compound whose molecular structure closely resembles the structure and behavior of human hair: expanding when exposed to water and contracting upon drying. When you remove the extensions, your hair is in the same condition as when you put them in.” For customers who need more hair than extensions provide, the salon also offers a private and intimate wig boutique. Consultations are done by appointment so women can take their time to find the natural-looking wig that fits their style. Trendz can wash and professionally dry all of these wigs as well. Health & Wellness with Modern Acupuncture MAKE IT A POINT TO INCLUDE THE ANCIENT ART OF ACUPUNCTURE IN YOUR 2023 WELLNESS CARE!

ARTICLE BY ANA MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

When January hits, we usually hit the gym and start a new diet to kick off a healthy new year. As part of your 2023 health and wellness plan, the 3000+ year-old ancient art of acupuncture should be something you consider as part of your new wellness routine. I spoke with Joan Arata, owner, of Florham Park’s Modern Acupuncture to learn more. Acupuncture, the ancient Chinese treatment, involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific “acupoints”. These acupoints stimulate the nervous system, releasing endorphins, our body’s natural pain-killing chemicals, releasing our natural healing abilities and promoting both physical and emotional well-being. Acupuncture increases blood flow to the areas being treated. When the needle goes below the dermis, it sends blood to those points which carry nutrients and collagen, setting it up for healing by receiving all those nutrients. It also allows our neuropathways to connect.

28

“People come because of back pain and to treat and prevent migraines. My husband had bad headaches…three to four times a week and was living on medication, that gave him other side effects. After acupuncture treatments, he no longer has migraine headaches. We offer both preventive and treatment care. Acupuncture can help treat arthritis, infertility, diabetes and weight loss as part of their normal medical treatments.” said Joan. “Acupuncture is what we call cumulative medicine. It’s like going to the gym, you build on the changes with frequent treatments to meet and maintain your wellness goals, “ Stress is very prevalent today. Acupuncture can help with stress, anxiety, and depression. “Anyone that comes to Modern Acupuncture gets treated for stress in addition to the reason they came in. We add a few extra needles to help them relax. When you release that stress, you feel so much better, “said Joan. “One of our goals is to make acupuncture more accessible and friendly. That’s why we’re in a retail space, not a medical building. We make it affordable by offering memberships or packages. We’re one of 50 locations nationwide and your membership allows you to visit other locations when you’re traveling. We will be adding cupping in our Florham Park location to release congestion in the muscles. Michael Phelps made it popular. It raises the blood to the surface.”

The acupuncturists, at Modern Acupuncture, are state licensed and nationally certified. Anyone 12 and older can be treated. Those 19 and under with a student ID, qualify for a junior membership. Joan stated, “Every needle is disposable, one-time use. For example, if the acupuncturist opens a package of ten, they use what they need for the treatment and the rest are thrown away. Each new package is opened in front of the customer. Your first session is about 45 minutes. Your regular treatments are about 30 minutes. The needles must be in for 20 minutes. “ Is it painful? Everybody is different. The needles are about the width of a human hair, don’t have sharp points, and are very thin and flexible. When I tried it, it felt like I tapped my skin with my fingernail for a second. “Modern Acupuncture offers a way for everyone to take advantage of Eastern treatments that have been around for 3000+ years. Only about 3% to 5% of Americans have tried acupuncture. For those, it’s a last resort that are considering surgery. Acupuncture has a place in our everyday self-care.”, said Joan. Modern Acupuncture is offering January specials in their Florham Park clinic for our readers. Call them at 973.457.4467 and try it! You may be pleasantly surprised you did! Follow a Plan for Success Get your finances in shape in the new year ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY

30

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

We work hard for our money, and when choosing a financial specialist, we want to make sure that person understands our lifestyles and goals. After all, we’re not just planning for now, but for long into the future as well. “We come up with a plan first, of course, then we create a financial relationship, because trust develops over time,” says Joseph Spina, president and financial advisor with Evergreen Financial Group, LLC. “It can be a daunting task because sometimes you turn into a counselor more than a financial advisor. When people have marital problems or one of their relatives die, I often get the first call.” In this uncertain economy, people are especially nervous about their financial health. “Most people have their money in a 401(k),” he says. “The rest of the money that they make they’re using to raise their families and oftentimes spending more than they make. So this retirement plan is their only way to save for retirement.” He adds, “Some advisors charge for financial plans, but my financial plans are free.” Almost 95% of his business is related to retirement savings, and the most frequently asked question is, “Do I have enough money for retirement?” He answers this question. “If they have a current 401(k), or if they have an old 401(k), we see how much they put into it. Then we look at how it’s invested inside of that 401(k). We calculate this until, let’s say, age 65. And if you have, for example, a million dollars at 65, well, that’s great, but what does that actually mean? “People don’t realize that this million may have to last them another 30 plus years. My father just turned 96. So how much can they take from that million without running out? Once we understand this, we can then go into investments and income and growth and talk about the economy and understand it all.”

At that point, he takes on the responsibility to invest the money judiciously, without panicking when the market gets volatile. “People might have looked at their retirement accounts lately and wanted to jump out the window, but from 2010 to 2021, you practically couldn’t lose money. This year’s tough. I take the emotions out of it - people often make the wrong emotional decisions and need to trust me to invest their money appropriately for their ages and years to retirement.” A financial advisor since 2010, Joseph founded Evergreen Financial Group, LLC a few years ago, and he has three additional financial advisors, Marc Papa, Kevin Rudd and Dee Walker, who are able to professionally guide and educate their clients. Completing the team are his two assistants, Jill Sodano and LeeAnn Sandberg. Previously in Morristown, the company relocated to Bedminster in November. In addition to retirement planning (which includes converting old 401(k)s into IRAs), his other main services include assisting people with college savings for children or grandchildren and investing any money that’s left over to some day fulfill a dream they’ve always had. Born and raised in New Jersey (he grew up in Lyndhurst and now lives in Wayne), Joseph actually bought a house in Point Pleasant last year. “My wife Susan and I just love the Jersey shore. My goal was to buy a shore house one day and luckily we were able to afford it. We go crabbing off the dock all the time.” He is a also a Dave Ramsey SmartVestor Team Member. “Dave Ramsey is the largest syndicated radio host in the country,” he says. “He’s not a financial advisor; he is a get-out-of-debt guy. He vets you and makes sure you’re legitimate. He has a referral service, and that’s how I built up my business. Literally, 99% of my clients are through this service.” For more information about Evergreen Financial Group, LLC and how Joseph and his team can assist you with your goals, go to www.evergreen-fa.com.

“There are 10,000 people a day turning 65 years old for another 17 years, and they’re called Baby Boomers. That’s who most of our clientele are, but we work with anybody who walks into our office.”
