When I was a kid, I had a Weimaraner, who during our Thanksgiving celebration, helped himself to an entire chocolate cake, that was in a sealed box, on top of the kitchen counter. Although he just had a bit of an upset “tummy”, that’s a Thanksgiving that I will never forget! For our upcoming holidays, our very own Dr. Megan Armani, veterinarian from Symbios Animal Health, has great advice to share to keep our pets safe. Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather and celebrate. It’s crucial to remember that some of our favorite foods can be harmful to our pets. Let’s explore the do’s and don’ts of sharing Thanksgiving treats with our beloved dogs and cats with Dr. Armani.

THE NO-NO LIST: FOODS TO AVOID 1. Turkey Bones: While the aroma of roasted turkey fills the air, it’s essential to keep turkey

bones out of your pets’ reach. Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious harm to your pets’ digestive tract. 2. Rich and Fatty Foods: Foods like gravy, buttery dishes, and high-fat meats can lead to pancreatitis in pets. This painful condition can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and severe abdominal discomfort. 3. Onions and Garlic: Onions and garlic, often present in stuffing and other dishes, contain compounds that are toxic to pets and can lead to anemia and gastrointestinal upset. 4. Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins, commonly found in holiday dishes and desserts, can cause kidney failure in pets, even in small amounts. 5. Chocolate and Sweets: Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, and any foods sweetened with xylitol are toxic to pets and should be kept far from their reach.

Plain, Cooked Turkey: While you should avoid seasoned and fatty portions, a small amount of plain, cooked, boneless turkey meat can be a delightful treat for your pets. Just ensure it’s free of spices, seasonings, and bones. 2. Safe Veggies: Steamed, plain vegetables like plain green beans, carrots, or pumpkin can make a great addition to your pets’ meals. These can provide extra nutrients without the risk of seasoning overload. 3. Homemade Pet-Friendly Treats: If you’re feeling creative, consider baking homemade pet treats using pet-safe ingredients. There are plenty of recipes available online that cater to pets’ dietary needs. 4. Commercial Pet Food Toppers: Some pet stores offer special pet-safe Thanksgiving meal toppers that can be added to your pets’ regular food. These are formulated to be safe and delicious for your furry friends. 5. Interactive Toys: Keep your pets engaged and distracted during the festivities by providing interactive toys filled with their regular kibble or special pet treats. Pet Supervision: Assign someone to watch over your pets during the gathering to prevent them from sneaking into trouble or being fed inappropriate foods by well-meaning guests. 3. Mindful Disposal: Ensure that all garbage bags are securely tied and out of your pets’ reach. Discarded food scraps, especially those containing bones or harmful ingredients, can be hazardous if ingested. “This Thanksgiving let’s keep our pets safe and healthy. By avoiding harmful foods and providing pet-safe treats, we can celebrate this festive occasion while keeping our furry friends’ well-being a top priority. The Interfaith Food Pantry Network has led the way in addressing food insecurity since 1994. The organization, which distributed 1.7 million pounds of food last year and is on track to pass the 2 million pound mark this year, has established and honorably upkept the following missions: to provide access to food, nutrition education and related resources, to present opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors, and to educate the public about the issues of hunger in our area. With over half of the donations being collected via food drives held by establishments such as schools, places of worship, and corporations, IFPN predominantly benefits low income working families, low income seniors, families affected by an illness, and persons with disabilities.

The work that the IFPN does is life-changing and essential to many families in our community. As non-negotiable household expenses such as rent, utilities, and vehicle payments take precedence, the remaining income left for food is often not enough to afford ample and nutritious meals for each family member. The IFPN welcomes such families to “shop” for food in the newly renovated marketplace, with refrigeration and produce displays that resemble supermarkets. Additionally, once a month, the organization hosts a free Farmer’s market with about 10 to 12 fresh items provided. With a large emphasis on food quality and nourishment, the IFPN guarantees that the items supplemented are both plentiful and balanced. Each year, during the season of giving, the IFPN joins forces with the Literacy Volunteers of Morris County to hold a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. This race, held Thanksgiving

morning, offers three different routes: a 5K, a 1-mile walk, and an abbreviated kids trot. In addition, the IFPN coordinates the Thanksgiving Food Program, where turkeys, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce are provided to families in need. Last year, the IFPN was able to supply over 2,100 Thanksgiving meals. Projects such as these are so powerful as they ensure families are adequately fed and bring families together to celebrate the holiday, but are only made possible via monetary/food donations and volunteer efforts. Individuals and societies such as corporations, civic groups and youth groups who are in a position to support the IFPN are strongly encouraged to do so and serve as an integral part of the IFPN’s success. ingredients • 2 oz premium bourbon • 1 oz apple cider (freshly pressed, if available) • 1/2 oz cinnamon-infused simple syrup (see instructions below) • 1/2 oz lemon juice (freshly squeezed) • 1 thin apple slice (for garnish) • Fall spice rim (see instructions below) • Fresh rosemary sprig (for garnish)

directions 1. Cinnamon-Infused Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 2 cinnamon sticks. Simmer over low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Let it cool, then remove the cinnamon sticks. 2. Fall Spice Rim: On a small plate, mix together 2 tbsp sugar, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Rub the rim of your glass with a lemon wedge, then gently dip it into the spice mixture until the rim is coated. 3. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add bourbon, apple cider, cinnamon-infused simple syrup, and lemon juice. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. 4. Strain the cocktail into a chilled rocks glass filled with ice. 5. Place a thin apple slice in the glass, letting it float on the surface. 6. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig. Lightly smack the rosemary sprig between your hands before placing it on top of the drink to release its aromatic oils. 7. It’s Pumpkin Bread Season

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
