WENTWORTH GALLERY Art with unique experiences accessible to all

ARTICLE BY ANA MEYER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED & BY ALEKSANDRA FLOREZ PHOTOGRAPHY

When you think about a local hot spot, maybe your favorite café comes to mind. For me, it’s Wentworth Gallery, where the works of world-renowned modern, abstract, and cubist artists embrace you. Each unique piece tells its own story in a welcoming environment where you can chat with Maryanne like you’re old friends. Maryanne, admittedly obsessed with art since childhood, has a Fine Arts degree and has been with Wentworth for 19 years. She’ll transport you to the world of these global artists with a simple conversation. “Art is something that transcends nationality, countries, religion...it speaks a universal language,” she says. I love Wentworth. A family-owned business, established in 1987 by Michael O'Mahony, and now run by his son Christian O'Mahony, carries a variety of international artists with locations in high-end malls and at Hard Rock Hotels. Michael, a smart, charismatic man, had a vision for what a gallery experience should be. He was a tall, tough guy with a strong Irish accent and felt that there was an intimidating feeling when you went into a Manhattan gallery. He would say, he was the type of guy that when he walked into a gallery, no one would talk to him. He believed, “Art should be accessible to everyone and a gallery should be welcoming to all.”

Wentworth carries prominent artists like Peter Max, Charles Fazzino, Paul Stanley of KISS, and Rick Allen of Def Leppard to name a few. They really get to know their clients. “Our collectors invite us into their homes,” says Maryanne. “This is art that you live with and pass down to your children. We get to know their families.” They offer free delivery, hangings, and a personalized home show. “We bring pieces to your house, hold them up, and see if they work. If you love them, great! If not, we can make recommendations now that we’ve seen your home.” Maryanne commented. At Wentworth’s Artist shows, you meet the artist and have your piece dedicated and personalized. They offer unique experiences with specific artists. For example, with Fazzino and Max, “We take our clients for a private tour of their studios in New York that includes dinner,” says Christian. “We aim to provide an unforgettable experience.”

Christian wants all Wentworth Galleries to have a special connection with their collectors and the artists that you can’t have anywhere else. He says that Rick Allen, who is a one arm drummer, gave a preconcert backstage tour of his custom designed drums, and Michael Godard, not only gave them a tour of his studio, but also brought them back to his house for a backyard BBQ in Las Vegas. “They’re not just my clients, they are my friends,” said Godard. “We’ve had these amazing experiences through which clients have met and become friends,” says

Maryanne, reflecting on one of her favorite aspects of these events. “Now, they plan things together for the next Wentworth trip!” Maryanne’s advice on how to live your best life: “Find your inspiration. Find beauty in everyday things!” And Christian’s advice: “Find what makes you happy. At the end that is the goal, is to find happiness. Choose to go into something that gives you a lot of happiness.” Wentworth Gallery, art with unique experiences accessible to all. www.wentworthgallery.com/

HOW ONE LOCAL MOM WENT FROM TELEVISION AWARDS TO REAL ESTATE GOLD

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | R EA L E STATE

After working as an executive in television for 20 years and being nominated for two Daytime Emmys, Kimberly Brechka wanted to make a career change. “When I graduated from college it was the heyday of daytime talk shows,” she says. “My first job was with the Ricki Lake show and then I went on to Montel Williams, and so on. I eventually decided to leave the business because I realized my nanny was raising my kids with my husband.” She always loved shopping, fashion and decorating, and after talking to a number of people about what her next career move should be, someone mentioned real estate, and that stuck. “I just hit the ground running,” says Kim. “I love the nitty gritty of it all. It's almost like producing a television show. No two real estate transactions are ever the same and I find it so rewarding to watch my clients see their dreams unfold right in front of their eyes.” She adds, “I’ve worked with celebrities and athletes and CEOs for a long time, and I learned at a very young age that we're all the same no matter how much money, fame, or power we have. So whether I'm working with a celebrity looking to relocate to New Jersey or a first time buyer, I'm the same “Kim” for everybody.” When Kim became a real estate agent, she committed to being the best one she could be. “I decided to learn everything there is about the 39 municipalities in Morris County,” she says. “I learned about the restaurants, the shopping, and what each town had to offer.” A lot of her clients want that hustle and bustle as well as really nice neighborhoods. “They want to walk the dog and see their neighbors,” says Kim. “They want to put the baby in the stroller and bump into Sue next door and swap recipes with her. Many people love that old school neighborhood feel.” Others prefer privacy and acreage in order to be far away from their neighbors. “You have people who don't want to see a soul, don't want to make any new friends, and basically want to be left alone and live in peace and quiet far away from the rest of society,” she says. “There’s plenty of towns in Morris County that offer that such as Harding and certain areas of Mendham and Chester.” Each town has different activities throughout the year, like parades, Christmas festivals, Menorah lightings, Halloween events, and other great family fun. “I'm always happy to put new clients in touch with past clients from certain towns so they can get a firsthand account of the community and the schools,” says Kim. “I also encourage clients to join town Facebook pages and online groups.” It’s important, she adds, for people to know the intricacies of where they’ll be living. “Is it going to take 10 minutes to drive to a supermarket or is there a daycare or a mall around here? How far are the schools? Everybody’s needs are different,” she says, and what’s important for one person may not matter to another.

Kim’s been working in real estate for more than five years now and says she knows she made the right decision for her family. “I left television over seven years ago when my kids were still young. My daughter Jordyn is now 13 and my son Tyler is 17. I always try to keep my schedule open around 3:00 pm so I can be there for my kids when they first get home from school.” Along with hard work and the support of her husband, Kevin, she has been as successful in her new career as she was in her old. She’s received the Realtors Circle of Excellence Award for the past 5 years. “I've been very fortunate to be as successful as I've been in such a short period of time. I work hard for my clients and ultimately I love this gig.”

20

Kim also believes she made the right decision partnering with Weichert Realtors in Morris Plains. “They have been so supportive of everything I do,” she says. “I love their branding; I love their marketing. But, although I hang my license there, the entrepreneur in me wanted my own brand too, which is where ‘Your Dream Home NJ’ comes in. Barnegat Light House

“If you're lucky enough to live at the beach, you're lucky enough.” That’s Alisa Molbert Freidberg’s belief. As a Realtor® for six years and a resident of Long Beach Island for 10, she knows this well. Although Long Beach Island is part of the Jersey Shore, as you’re crossing over that bridge, you’ll feel like you’re entering another world and leaving all your troubles behind. The people, she says, are friendly and welcoming. “When you go on a walk or ride your bike, people say hello, everyone waves. They’re just happy to be here.” The beaches, of course, are beautiful anytime of the year, and you have the ability to walk or bike to many places. “I love being outdoors with my dog, walking or playing on the beach, and so many places are pet friendly here,” says Alisa. There is also a big sense of community, whether it’s among the year-round residents or renters. “We have quite a bit of renters on our block and everyone is just so nice,” she says. Having renters also adds some variety to the neighborhood; you never know who you will meet. On certain parts of the island, such as in Harvey Cedars, residents can easily walk to both the ocean and bay beaches. You can go from surfing to crabbing and back again. While the sound of waves can be mesmerizing and peaceful, and jumping through waves and riding boogie boards great fun, there are also bay beaches for the little ones and for those who enjoy calmer waters. The sunrises and sunsets over the water are just gorgeous and bring many people out to watch Mother Nature show off her magic. In addition to driving, walking and biking around the island, there's the LBI shuttle, which runs in the summer and goes from one end of the island to the other, stopping on the Boulevard along the way. “It's a nice service and relatively inexpensive,” says Alisa. “If you're in Holgate and you want to go to the lighthouse but don't want to drive, you just jump on and get a ride. And it's great for adults who want to go out and have some cocktails and not have to worry about driving.” The number of residents has definitely grown since the pandemic, she says, and even in the winter there is plenty to do. “I love the quiet and the solitude of winter, but many of the bars and restaurants stay open year round,” she says. “There are happy hours, bands, trivia nights and karaoke nights, so you can keep yourself as busy as you want.” CONTINUED >

LBI Sunset

“People also love that they can surf all year round,” says Alisa. “Even in the winter, especially when there's a storm coming, they put on their wetsuits and they're gone.” Of course, boaters also love the ability to have their boats close to their homes. “For families, there are two elementary schools on the island, while kids in high school are bussed to Southern Ocean about 10 miles away,” she says. Alisa, with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Zack Shore, REALTORS® focuses on sales on the island, but also covers Manahawkin and Beach Haven West. “Zack Shore, REALTORS® is the number one agency on LBI, with the largest market share in both closed units and dollars for decades.” There are three offices on the island – Ship Bottom, Beach Haven, and Barnegat Light - and all handle sales as well as rentals.

“I don't do rentals particularly, but we have a large rental department and a large rental book of business with repeat customers,” she says. “My motto is ‘Expect Better’ and for me it's really about personalized service. If you're buying a house, I'm with you every step of the way from showing you homes, to helping you obtain a mortgage, a home inspection, and setting up utilities. Even after the sale is done, whatever I can do to assist I will.” She once had a client who just closed on a house and was getting carpeting installed the next day. When they couldn't be here, she was on site for the carpet install. Alisa has received the Honor Society designation from Berkshire Hathaway two years in a row. “In 2020, I was in the top 16% of the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, and in 2021, I was in the top 18%. You can see all my reviews on Zillow.” To find your dream year-round or vacation home on Long Beach Island, contact Alisa at 732-718-0039, AMolbert@ZackShore.com or at www.longbeachislandlistings.com.

One of our favorite meals is a savory seafood entree called “Linguine al Nero di Seppia con Frutti di Mare e Pomodorini.” Here is the recipe we make at home. How about making this delightful entree on Father’s Day this year? Our family loves it, and we hope you love it too!

INGREDIENTS (Serves 4) • 6 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1 Onion, Chopped • 6 Garlic Clove, Crushed • Kosher Salt, Freshly Ground Pepper • ½ Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes • 4 Cups Tomato Sauce • 1 Cup Clam Juice • 2 Cup Dry White Wine • 6 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Parsley • 8 Sea Scallops • 24 Manila or Little Neck Clams • 24 Mussels • 1 Cup Calamari, Cut Into Rings • 8 Large Shrimp • 20 Ounces of Black Ink Linguine or White Linguine

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium. 2. Cook onion and garlic, stirring until onions are translucent, 5-8 minutes. 3. Add clams, white wine, tomato sauce and clam juice and cook for 4-5 minutes. 4. Add mussels, scallops and shrimp and keep cooking for a few minutes until shellfish opens up. 5. Add the crushed red pepper flakes. 6. Cook the pasta in a large boiling pot with salt water until al dente. 7. Transfer pasta to a large serving bowl and put the seafood sauce on top. 8. Sprinkle the chopped parsley.

A MUSEUM WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY & PROVIDED

Come and experience the old and the new

Looking to see great works of art, find unique programs for your children, or rent a spectacular venue for an event? If so, you don’t have to travel far. The Morris Museum in Morristown, with its affiliation with the renowned Smithsonian Institute, has all this and more.

COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITS While the permanent collections offered are incredible and varied, there are always new and fascinating exhibits to be found at different times of the year. “We're really excited to be hosting Art in the Atrium’s 30th Anniversary Show, For The Culture, By The Culture, 30 Years of Black Art, Activism, and Achievement, which opened May 25 and will run through September 25,” says the new Executive Director, Andrew Sandall. Another exhibit on display throughout the summer is Contemporary Spin: The Guinness Collections Re/ Imagined. “This shows our signature Guinness Collection interpreted through the eyes of the next generation of museum professionals.”

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS The amazing Spark!Lab, which opened last year, has been a tremendous hit. “It's a fascinating, unique place,” says Director of Museum Learning and STEAM, Gabrielle Meyer. “There's nothing quite like it within a couple of states.” Spark!Lab, she explains, is a hands-on space that allows kids to create, think about the world differently and come

30

up with solutions. “There might be a prompt to create a vehicle with this material or create something that moves with these gears. As a former teacher, the piece I love the most is that a 5-year-old and a 13-year-old can have a fantastic experience using the same materials.” Another offering is the Art in Motion Tour. Children learn about various pieces, then go to the classroom and make their own kinetic art. Artful Afternoons, which will be held in July and August, is yet another fun addition. They’re each a week-long and have very specific programming based on a theme.

MEMBERSHIPS “There are numerous reasons to be a member, but the number one is free admission to the museum,” says Andrew. “Members also get exclusive programs and experiences and discounts for our regular programs. You're also helping support us financially and making sure those programs and exhibits are available for everyone in the community.”

PRIVATE EVENTS Hold your next party or corporate event (up to 120 guests) at this unique venue. “We still have some select Saturdays available this summer,” says Private Event Manager, Nina Hoffer. Having access to the galleries during your event adds an extra dimension to your party that is distinctive and unforgettable. To find out more, go to https://morrismuseum.org/.
