Building Relationships One Room at a Time GIFT YOURSELF A DREAM KITCHEN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED A kitchen is the heart of every home. It’s where families and friends gather for everyday meals, conversations, and celebrations. Making it a beautiful and functional space will bring even more joy this holiday season. Magnolia Home Remodeling Group in Union can create the kitchen of your dreams. Founded in 1996 by Vic Fiore and his brother-in-law Chris Fontana, this family-owned and operated business now has over 20 employees, including project managers, business managers, sales reps and office staff to handle every detail of both big and small jobs. However, Vic and Chris are still hands-on when it comes to working alongside their staff to ensure jobs are going smoothly and customers are satisfied. “We try to keep a very tight control on these projects and how

we manage them,” says Vic. “We have a solid network of installers that we've been using for many years who are tested and proven. We all care deeply about the finished product.” Vic loves that every job is unique since it’s dependent on homeowners’ tastes, lifestyles, home sizes and budgets. But, it’s important to keep in mind that investing in high-quality items means they will not only look great initially but remain attractive and useful for years to come. For kitchens, homeowners want a bright, fresh look and so white cabinets are still on trend, as are stainless steel appliances, which are easy to keep clean and go with any décor. Appliances can also be made to blend in with cabinets for a seamless flow.
Double ovens are popular and make it possible to bake cookies and roast a chicken all at the same time. Wine fridges and coffee bars are additional features that add a little fun and pizzazz to every kitchen. Choosing wide-plank luxury vinyl flooring which is durable plus water and scratch resistant can bring warmth to monochromatic cabinets. While quartz and granite countertops add character, look great and hold up to lots of use. Backsplashes are an important design feature that adds color and contrast as well, and while there are tons of options, picking something that will stay in style for many years is smart. Lots of countertop space is critical, especially if you have a larger family and/or like to entertain.

This is one reason why islands are so popular. They add that extra workspace that can also be used for dining, thus providing a dual purpose. Islands can also inject some great contrast with accent wood or color cabinets, and including a waterfall edge adds a little something special. While sinks can range from basic stainless steel to fancy cast-iron enamel, most people still want those that are sunken into the countertop. And don’t forget to add a pot filler over the stove and spare your arms from carrying those heavy water-filled pots. It’s these little things that can make the most difference when preparing meals. Speaking of pots, pot drawers are also useful. No more reaching in and searching around deep cabinets trying to find the right one. Another important feature in any kitchen is proper lighting - not only for ambiance, but so you can see when measuring ingredients and chopping food. Styles range from very simple pocket lights to luxurious glass globes. Whether homeowners want a minor refresh or to have a room totally gutted and remodeled, the Magnolia team is with them every step of the way. “We’re always grateful when people consider us, and we offer projects that can fit most budgets,” he says. “It doesn't have to be a super expensive high-end project.” Treating customers right is how they’ve successfully grown a business with a solid reputation. “We're ethical, and people are hiring us in good faith, so we want to deliver on what they're expecting from us. We also want to build relationships and have them consider us again in the future.”

The only way to do this is through constant oversight. “It's a lot of checking up and monitoring,” he says. “From the initial design and planning phase to completion, there's a series of milestones that have to be met in order to get to the desired finished product. You have to stay in communication with not only the homeowners but with the installers as well, throughout the whole process.” Vic explains that there are sometimes changes to plans or adjustments that need to be made, whether required or requested by a homeowner who decides to do something different or additional after the project starts. With almost 30 years of experience, Vic, Chris and their team can negotiate these
unexpected situations and find alternative solutions that will make everyone happy. While kitchens, bathrooms and basements are a major part of what they do, Magnolia also expertly handles exterior remodeling projects such as porches and steps, walkways, siding and windows, as well as outdoor living amenities such as patios and decks. And if there’s something they can’t do, they’ll let you know. “Whether we can do the job or not, we make sure we always call people back,” he says. “You will love the architecture, old and new, the food, shopping, and hospitality.”
For our “Food and Drinks” issue, I’m sharing the best-kept secrets of Spain! My family is from Spain. I spent many summers there and attended college in Barcelona for a year. Although the towns have grown, what stays the same is the amazing culinary experiences you will find from the local cafe to the most elegant restaurant in these amazing cities! First stop Bilbao, Spain. This gorgeous Basque coastal town is a must-visit. Originally known for its shipbuilding industry, “La Gran Ria”, the river that runs through the town has transformed into the waterside social hub filled with access to restaurants, shops and the Guggenheim designed by American Architect Frank Gehry. The museum’s design is meant to resemble colliding ships, an homage to Bilbao’s history. Visit “Café Iruña”, established in 1903, has the original tiles, millwork and warmth of the original built. The main meal in Spain is around 2:00 pm. Be sure to ask for “El menu del dia” (menu of the day) which provides three choices of a first entrée, plus a second entrée, dessert and includes, beer, wine, or bottled water, all for only around $20 dollars per person. cafeirunabilbao.net Next, “Bar Arantzale”, a clifftop bar located in a traditional fisherman’s town and dine with the locals. No tourists here. Open late, for evening get-togethers, sit outside on quaint wooden furniture and order traditional Basque shareable dishes like, “chorizo” baked in clay pots, savory small squid, muscles in a savory sauce with wine or beer. arrantzale.com Bilbao’s final recommendation, an upscale waterfront restaurant, “Café La Veranda”. Enjoy a posh

mid-day menu with a view of the beach. The menu of the day includes choices like “Gazpacho, Bacalao Ahumado, Langostinos Sobre Crema de Maiz, Medallon de Bonito”, and finish with “Bizchoco de Almendra”. Meals include wine, beer, and local spring water from “Gernika” for only $37 per person. Next stop, Benidorm, Spain. Here, order their traditional regional rice “Arroz del Senoyoret”, it’s like a paella, but with a tomato savory base and seafood, no chicken or chorizo here. Available at “La Terraza”, beach front restaurant where the “menu of the day” is $22 per person. Enjoy your meal while taking in the beach views and people walking by on the promenade. In the evening, the social life continues until late, with bar-café style locations crowded with locals and tourists enjoying the traditional last meal of the day, typically around 10 pm. At “La Tapita” you can order a “caña rubia”, a blonde beer or wine, and you get a “pincho” (single serve appetizer) free with each drink for only $2.60 each! Final stop, Barcelona Spain, filled with centuries of rich Catalan culture, home of artist like Picasso, Miro, the 1992 Olympics, and of course the works of Antonio Gaudi. You will love the architecture, old and new, the food, shopping, and hospitality. For an upscale dining experience, visit “Disfrutar” in Barcelona which boast of having two Michelin Stars, voted the best of Barcelona yearly and ranked in third place as the world’s top 50 restaurants in 2022. Be sure to get a reservation in advance! Its very hard to get into this restaurant because of its fame. A culinary experience you will treasure! disfrutarbarcelona.com/?lang=en

On the opposite side of your culinary adventure, be sure to visit “La Boqueria”, this famous market located off La Rambla, it’s a must visit for locals and tourists. In this indoor food market you will experience food stands, offering a variety of local vendors selling their top rated “Jamón Ibérico”, seafood bowls you can eat while you are walking around, sample and purchase classic treats like Spanish “turrón” (Spanish nougat bar) with unexpected flavors and options made with pistachios, or Bailey’s liquor and more. Discover, small bar stands with seating areas that wrap around their space, serving you “pinchos” (single serve appetizers) with a drink. It’s a must-go-to and experience! boqueria.barcelona A must have, “churros con chocolate”, a Spaniard classic you can have for breakfast, dessert and as snack any time. “La Selecta De Churros”, established in 1950 offers a wide variety, including traditional churros, salty options like “Churro de Jamón y Queso” and sweet churros stuffed with dark chocolate or mango cream. laselectachurros.com Anywhere you eat in Barcelona is a treat. My final favorite that offers multiple locations is “Casa Carmen”. Consider this in-between “La Boqueira” market and upscale “Difrutar”. Menus are available in English, offering a wide range of traditional Spaniard cuisine, with a mix of modern flair. My favorite, “Pimientos de Padrón”, (regional small green peppers, flash fried and sprinkled with sea salt). Shareables with drinks is the way to go. casacarmenrestaurant.com Experiencing Spain through your palate is an adventure you will always remember! Enjoy!

CALABRIA RESTAURANT & PIZZA IS OFFERING MUCH MORE THAN QUALITY ITALIAN CUISINE. ARTICLE BY FRANK DILORGI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Forty years ago, Calabria Restaurant & Pizza opened in Livingston by owner Gabriella Ottaiano’s father Dino and uncle Tony. From their delectable upside-down crunchy thin pizza to eggplant parm, Calabria’s made a reputation for authentic Italian food, and fresh ingredients, and is the first name I think of for pizza worth traveling for. However, like many restaurants, the Covid-19 pandemic threatened Calabria's long-lasting tenure. In walked Barstool Sports founder and CEO Dave Portnoy; Portnoy, notorious for his “One Bite Pizza Reviews”, where he tastes and rates pizzas from all over the world, had awarded Calabria’s “Crunchy Thin Pizza” a staggering 8.9 out of 10 which ignited a frenzy for loyal Barstool fans to taste Calabria’s pizza. Gabriella recounts their website crashing, 645 orders the next day, and a yearlong police presence needed at Calabria’s. Calabria’s pizza was in such demand, that they began distributing through Gold Belly, a food delivery service where customers can order food from their favorite restaurants nationwide. The Barstool Pizza Review was life-changing for Calabria’s and established a relationship between them and several Barstool employees; some of which, “The Barstool Units” Coach Duggs and Frank The Tank came into Calabria’s to make pies with the help of Stu “The Source” Feiner with all proceeds going to The Barstool Fund: a non-profit supporting small businesses hurt by the pandemic. Even before the life-changing pizza review, Calabria’s had a history in charity. Despite being forced to close during the pandemic, the Calabria team quickly took action to support their community. Calabria offered and donated over 10,000 special family meals, to feed families of 6, during the pandemic. Gabriella took things a step further with the restaurant's “No Questions Asked Policy” when she posted on her local Facebook group, “If you are not working/not getting a paycheck/struggling to make CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Gabriella and The Calabria Family have truly shown their dedication to the community. When I say, “The Calabria’s Family”, everyone is treated like family; It’s the restaurant's priority to make everyone feel welcomed, and like “famiglia”. Not only will you find authentic Italian cuisine, made with fresh ingredients, but also classic cocktails, beer, and liquor at Calabria’s. So, make the short drive to Calabria’s and you will be welcomed with open arms, and you’ll soon find out why their pizza is rated in the top 1% statewide and 3% nationwide with Barstool. calabrianj.com

Ride the
Rail Offering much more than tasty wine, Villa Milagro is the perfect day-long getaway.
Looking to sip wine in the sprawling hills of California? Well, that’s only a train ride away thanks to Villa Milagro Vineyards. Nestled between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, on the historic Delaware River, are 104 acres of California-inspired vineyards providing a traditional wine tasting experience. Owners Audrey and Steve produce wine and foster experiences that refine the taste buds and enrich the palate. True to its name, Villa Milagro is the place or home of miracles. When you look across the panoramic landscape and sip wine with paired hors d'oeuvres, you will be transported to the hills of Napa Valley. Could the experience possibly get better? Yes—by taking the Winery Train!

The Winery Train by Delaware River Railroad Excursions is a unique, fun, and relaxing day trip. The 90-minute scenic steam engine ride starts from Lehigh Junction Station in old town Phillipsburg, smoothly moving through the beautiful autumn scenes of the Delaware River and passing bucolic farmland and quaint small hamlets. By a passionate and knowledgeable group of volunteers, you’ll be taught the history of the railroad and steam engine. Upon arriving at your destination, you’ll be picked up by a bus and driven up the hill to Villa Milagro. On this shorter ride, owner Steve will share the rich history of the surrounding area and farm. At the top of the hill, with the lovely vintner’s residence in front of you, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of four counties in two states, lush and beautiful vineyards, and abundant sunlight. Just imagine the turning leaves and the hills’ deep autumn hues—beautiful! You’ll get a crash course on how Villa Milagro makes its wine and what makes its vineyard the perfect spot to grow grapes. Then, you will sample wines paired with hot hors d’oeuvres before you make your choices of wines to buy. You’ll spend about an hour there, but this is just the right amount of time to enjoy everything the winery offers before boarding the return bus to your train. The all-inclusive wine train experience costs $40 per adult, and given the experience I had, it is well worth it. To make things even better, you can pack your own lunch to enjoy with your wine on the train ride back. How lovely! If you’re looking for a place to unwind, Villa Milagro is certainly the place for you. You can also drive to the vineyards directly, sit back and enjoy some live music, and treat yourself to a wine tasting of Villa Milagro’s signature wines available on weekends. My favorite, Luz del Sol, a dry Chardonnay blend with hints of tropical fruit. Come experience Villa Milagro. 877trainride.com/winery.htm villamilagrovineyards.com/home
