LIFESTYLE LETTER

Homage to gas station fashion. When I first moved here, 11 years ago, I was a horse girl. Still am. But one thing this area lacks, severely, is a good tack store for the English rider. And a good tack store means good English apparel, for riding and for working around a barn, etc. I mourned this upon arrival but perked up when someone said, "Oh have you been to..." and quickly fell back to disappointment when they ended their sentence with "...Cenex." Cenex...the gas station? CHS Mountain West Co-op, connected to Cenex on North Reserve, was right here in Missoula up until this year when every piece of tack and every last pair of tall boots were sold off. I'm so grateful that I got to march through the automatic doors of the gas station and experience such a fun and familiar environment that had so much to offer for the first decade of my living here. It's a sore spot now that it's gone and it only feels right to pay homage to it here with a letter, and maybe bring back the comical sense of how Montanan it is that someone used to be able to purchase $300 leather boots to be worn in competition...at a gas station. You could go up to the register with a nice box, maybe you were a mom buying your daughter their first competition set, and by the time your brain adjusts to the bright lights and teller and all the grab-n-go items, you're adding a pack of gum to your $400 bill. It's just too comical and such a juxtaposition. I grew to really love this part of my Montana story and I'll miss it. That said, I do like to break the barrier a bit when it comes to the style issue every September. We are not a materialistic city. We are hardy people who like to look nice, but we also play way harder than we try to dress. This issue is a healthy mix of what makes Missoula, well, Missoula in the way of fashion. I hope you feel inspired to see style in the special way style sings to you.

PROTECT WHAT MATTERS Four Things Every Parent Should Do After a Car Accident Involving a Child

When a child is involved in a car accident, it's natural for parents to focus on the immediate aftermath. But the steps you take in the hours and days that follow can make a big difference for your child's health and your family's peace of mind. Should my child be checked by a doctor even if they seem okay? Yes. Children don't always recognize or communicate pain the same way adults do. A medical evaluation can identify injuries that may not be immediately obvious. Do I need to replace my child's car seat? Yes. Check with the car seat manufacturer's recommendations, a car seat may need to be replaced even if it doesn't appear damaged. What should I document after the accident? Take photos of the vehicles, the accident scene, and any visible injuries. Keep copies of medical records, repair estimates, receipts, and notes about your child's recovery.

Should I settle with the insurance company right away? It's usually best not to rush. Some injuries may take time to develop, and claims involving children often require additional consideration. What's the most important thing parents should remember? Focus on your child's health first. The legal and insurance issues can be addressed, but making sure your child receives proper care should always be the priority. Final Thought Cars can be repaired and replaced, but your child's health is priceless. Taking a few extra steps after a crash can help protect both their recovery and their future. Runway 12

D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AU TO + MARIN E

Engine: 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, 274 hp, and 311 lb.-ft. of torque

SPECS

Hop in the new 2027 Kia Telluride, and you’ll feel well cared for. For starters, the safety features available in the Telluride are unmatched: from blind-spot detection and custom camera and mirror-integrated video displays, to safe exit assist technology (to let you know if the coast is clear when opening doors, a key feature as more and more Missoulians take to the roads on bicycles), among many other technologies to keep you and other drivers safe while out on the road. This is key, because the Telluride is also a joy to drive, smooth and graceful with plenty of pep; it’s easy to forget you’re behind the wheel of a two-ton beauty. The suite of safety features makes it a practical ride and gives the driver confidence and comfort. Additionally, the driver’s seat in some Tellurides comes equipped with Ergo motion technology, a massage function providing lumbar support and posture assistance. It's a spacious SUV with around 180 cubic feet of interior space and fold-down 2nd and 3rd row seats, making the Telluride the perfect vehicle for family outings, errands, or cruising around town between events. It’s got plenty of room on the inside, yet it doesn’t advertise it on the outside; the Telluride is a sleek machine that has the feel and look of a much smaller, manageable vehicle. Stop by Campbell Kia of Missoula and take the new Telluride for a spin. See the mountains from the rugged but refined point of view, and maybe find a whole new you.

• (Up to) 5,000 lb. of towing capacity • Climate-controlled 1st and 2nd row seats • Meridian™ Premium Audio 14-speaker system • Dual sunroofs • Full display digital rearview mirror • Available in Gas or Hybrid models

“A LOT OF PEOPLE COME TO US FOR JEANS, GOOD BASICS, EVERYONE ALWAYS COMPLIMENTS HOW SOFT THINGS ARE.”

Opening the door to Mood Boutique, the first thing I hear is a customer raving about how much she loves the store. “Half of my wardrobe is from you,” she tells the owner, Sarah Allen. “Mood’s my go-to.” Today, the customer is wearing dark jeans paired with Scout earrings, both from Mood, and she’s also holding a couple tops from Z Supply. “I need some basic like tanky t-shirty stuff,” she says. “There’s two colors,” Sarah tells her. “I’m just going to buy these,” the customer replies. The trust is palpable. “A lot of people come to us for jeans, good basics, everyone always compliments how soft things are,” Sarah says. “We try to merchandise it well so people can put outfits together just by looking at the rack or the table.” CONTINUED >

"MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS COULD COME IN AND BOTH COULD LEAVE WITH SOMETHING, WHICH I THINK IS UNIQUE.”

The Higgins storefront is narrow but the store goes deep. Since opening in 2011, Mood Boutique has absorbed more space as neighboring businesses closed or moved. Nowadays, Sarah, a sixth generation Montanan, has room to stock jeans, sweaters, tops, dresses, purses, hats, underwear, loungewear, sunglasses, stationery, candles, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and custom Montana sweatshirts. “What was the most important for me was to be an affordable boutique down here,” Sarah says. “To find lines that are fashionable and comfortable and good quality, but at a price point that isn’t outrageous for downtown.” Sarah is dressed in white jeans and an open-weave white sweater. As I make my way through the store, I see two sweaters similar to the one she has on. “I would say I tend to wear more basic,” Sarah says. “I’m not really into loud prints or bright colors, so more neutrals.” The store reflects Sarah’s personal style, and I also see classic patterns like stripes and plaids, as well as the occasional camo and sequins.

22

“Just visually in the store you need those pops of color to go with all the basics I like,” Sarah says. She recalled ordering – then reordering – a pair of tapestry pants that sold out around the time of Shania Twain’s concert in Missoula last year. “I was like, these are so not me, and one of my employees was like, I don’t understand these pants, but they looked cute!” She adds, “I feel like I don’t do fast fashion, but you do want to have some of those pieces people see on social media or models.” Now that I’m oriented to the store layout and content, I ask Sarah, what if I need something for a work thing? “I know,” she says, looking me in the eye, and shows me toward a short sleeve sweater as a good transitional piece that goes day to night and is something I can layer. Sarah says her demographic is working women. “But mothers and daughters could come in and both could leave with something, which I think is unique.” Grandmothers are also fans of Mood Boutique. Two summers ago, Sarah played host to a regular customer celebrating her eightieth birthday. Her grandkids made her a scavenger hunt of her favorite places in Missoula, and called it the Annapalooza.

“It blew me away that they knew that was a place she wanted to go to,” Sarah recalls. Especially post-COVID-19, Sarah is grateful for her loyal customer base. “Just being able to still be down here, I appreciate so much,” she says. “Just keep the focus on the customer experience, having those good pieces that people know to come to me for.” As it turns out, I’m currently in the market for a good piece – for a friend who also happens to be a cool mom. I think back to the earrings Sarah’s very loyal customer had on earlier: “Literally every time I wear these, someone asks, where did you get those,” she had said. “I tell everybody that this is where I get them.” And I’m smirking at a hat that reads GO ASK YOUR DAD. But, true to form, Sarah has her eye on something a bit more classic: a lacey beige top. “It’s a neutral,” she laughs. “I think it has a lot of pretty details.”

“JUST KEEP THE FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE, HAVING THOSE GOOD PIECES THAT PEOPLE KNOW TO COME TO ME FOR.” 24

Fitness Is Our Fashion The Montana Senior Olympics is the stage for style for our seniors

Paige Berriochoa comes from a sports family, growing up playing volleyball and competing in track and field events. After a stint in Houston working in pro sports event planning, she moved West, landed a job at Missoula Parks and Recreation, and started a family. As event director for the 40th annual Montana Senior Olympics (MSO) being held in Missoula this September 17th to 19th, she loves the vibe of MSO, saying its “relaxed, welcoming, with lots of volunteers to help folks get where they need to go.” She also likes that, “people are at Montana Senior Olympics because they are interested in building friendships, meeting new people, and being active.”

Missoula’s enthusiastic embrace of MSO reflects our style and commitment to a lifetime wellness that keeps us moving, connected, and fit. The staff at Missoula Parks and Recreation, volunteers, sponsors, and partners will welcome over 300 senior athletes, ranging in age but including persons over 50. Participants have 15 events including badminton, track and field, and pickleball to choose from and with no residency requirements. Friends and family from other states can join in, too. Missoula Senior Olympics can be a transformative experience. Often senior women didn’t have the opportunities to compete in sports while they were growing up

that we take for granted today. MSO provides athletes like swimmers Flora L. Wong and Charlotte Sanddal, both of Helena, that chance. Both in their 90s, they took home 5 gold medals a piece in previous MSOs. Another woman, in her 80s, came to the last MSO and entered the corn hole competition. Paige recalls that she seemed apprehensive and a bit nervous. She had never competed before, but with her son at her side, she stepped up and her toss swished into the hole. By the end of the event, she was really enjoying herself and her confidence was shining through. Darrell McNenny is a self-proclaimed double snowman. In golf parlance, a snowman is a score of eight on any individual hole (which is not a good thing). At age 88, he may not be a great golfer, but he is a double snowman. A former vice president of the MSO board and a life-long athlete, he’s primarily a runner, favoring the 400-meter dash as “kind of my sweet spot,” he says.” This fall, he may also compete in the 200, 800 and 1500-meter races. These events take place on the same afternoon sometime as close as within a 2-hour period so it can be challenging. This year, all five of his kids plan to compete at the MSO so the McNennys will be well represented. Missoula Senior Olympics serves as a National Qualifying Event for the National Senior Games, which happens every two years (Tulsa, Oklahoma will host in 2027). Competitors are grouped by age (50 to 54, 56 to 60, and so on) and oftentimes by skill level with the top three finishers in each event qualifying to attend the National Senior Games. Darrell has been to the National Senior Games five times. He and his wife Edith have loved attending Nationals and wish that more Montanans would make the trip. They’ve made lifelong friends and with over 10,000 athletes in attendance it is an amazing experience. Darrell loves that the athletes “become a community and the games give you incentive to be doing what we should be doing. It isn’t just for a month before; it becomes a year-round effort and stays in your mind.” One of the most popular events at MSO is pickleball, and this year, in partnership with 406 Pickleball, a hometown organization, there will be plenty of opportunities for fun and competition. Lynn Johson is inspired by her 90-year-old mom who lives in CONTINUED >

Washington and plays pickleball nearly every day. For Lynn, it is the social part of the activity that really means a lot to her. She’s taken part in the MSO before, and it is “totally a blast.” Ed Brannin, who played ping pong while in the army and did two tours in Vietnam, took up pickleball about 13 years ago. At 78, he enjoys doubles and mixed doubles and has participated in MSO including when it was hosted in Polson. Participating in MSO helps seniors find their why. For some, it’s the competition and the quest for personal improvements. Invariably, it’s about the joy of feeling connected both to friends and through movement, to their own bodies. Active living and engagement improves our quality of life and keeps us going. As Ed Brannin cheerfully quipped, “50-year-olds are like kids to me. I’ll keep playing as long as my knees hold up.”

"It isn’t just for a month before; it becomes a year-round effort and stays in your mind.” - Darrell McNenny WHAT TO EXPECT:

Fans are encouraged to come and cheer on the athletes. Events take place at Fort Missoula Regional Park, Dornblaser Field, and various venues. Events are organized so athletes can compete in multiple categories and sports with medals being awarded on site after each event. There are both sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. To see the schedule of events and more, visit: www.montanaseniorolympics.com or contact Paige Berriochoa at berriochoap@ci.missoula.mt.us

Investing in Your Wardrobe Without Compromising Your Style ARTICLE BY LISA WOLF

1.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO SHOW YOUR UNIQUE STYLE WITH NICE CLOTHES WHILE ALSO STRETCHING YOUR DOLLAR

One’s wardrobe says a lot about a person and it is important to dress to the occasion whether it be work or play while still expressing yourself. Building a wardrobe can be a costly expense but it’s possible to show your unique style with nice clothes while also stretching your dollar.

2.

A FUN, SUSTAINABLE WAY TO BUILD A HIGH-QUALITY AND STYLISH WARDROBE Second-hand and vintage-style clothes are a fun, sustainable way to build a high-quality and stylish wardrobe without breaking the bank. Buying handmade and second-hand also reduces the demand for new clothing production, which helps reduce waste and the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

5.

SIMPLE, WILD, CLASSIC, COLORFUL; DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR STYLE The best way to keep your wardrobe fresh is to look for either trendy or classic new pieces and match them with your favorite vintage or second-hand pieces, like a new dress with your grandma’s old leather jacket or a recently purchased foundation piece with a skirt made from vintage fabrics. SOME PIECES ARE SIMPLY BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SECOND-HAND Some pieces are simply better when they are second-hand like worn denim and lived-in boots or leather that’s softened over time. Get creative and add touches to your old favorites with patches, embroidery, and even natural flower colors transferred to fabric. Grab your old t-shirts, family vintage fabrics, or lace, and pull it all together into something new and memorable.

IT WAS SO PERFECTLY HER AND ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS My sister, Haley, used an 1800s petticoat and blouse, salvaged Edwardian style Christening gowns and a tablecloth, and other fabrics to create the most amazing vintage-style wedding dress. It was so perfectly her and absolutely gorgeous.
